We reconsider the Feynman-Kislinger-Ravndal model applied to neutrino-excitation of baryon resonances. The effects of lepton mass are included, using the formalism of Kuzmin, Lyubushkin and Naumov. In addition we take account of the pion-pole contribution to the hadronic axial vector current. Application of this new formalism to the reaction nu(mu) + p --> mu + Delta at E(nu) approx 1 GeV gives a suppressed cross section at small angles, in agreement with the screening correction in Adler's forward scattering theorem. Application to the process nu(tau) + p --> tau + Delta at E(nu) approx 7 GeV leads to the prediction of right-handed tau polarization for forward-going leptons, in line with a calculation based on an isobar model. Our formalism represents an improved version of the Rein-Sehgal model, incorporating lepton mass effects in a manner consistent with PCAC.
Different approaches to take into account nonzero lepton mass in the Rein-Sehgal model are compared. Modification of the axial current due to pion pole term are included and it is shown that they lead to large reduction of antineutrino cross section and a change of the shape of $dσ/dQ^2$.
The presence of the top-pions $π_{t}^{0,\pm}$ in the low-energy spectrum is an inevitable feature of the topcolor scenario. Taking into account the constraints of the present experimental limit of the lepton flavor violating($LFV$) process $μ\to eγ$ on the free parameters of topcolor-assisted techicolor(TC2) models, we study the contributions of the neutral top-pion $π^{0}_{t}$ to the $LFV$ processes $μ^{+}μ^{-}\toτμ$ (or $τe$), $ γγ\toτμ$ (or $τe$), $e^{+} e^{-}\toτμ$, and $e γ\to e π_{t}^{0}\to e τμ(e)$ via the flavor changing ($FC$) couplings $π_{t}^{0}l_{i}l_{j}$ and discuss the possibilit…
We consider neutrino mixing and oscillations in quantum field theory and compute the neutrino lepton charge in decay processes where neutrinos are generated. We also discuss the proper definition of flavor charge and states and clarify the issues of the possibility of different mass parameters in field mixing.
In the framework of the minimal ${SU}(3)_C\otimes {SU}(3)_L \otimes {U}(1)_N$ model, the lepton-flavour-violating decay $π^+ \ra μ^- ν_μe^+ e^+ $ is calculated without directly invoking lepton mixing. The branching ratio for this rare pion decay mode is found to be much smaller than the current experimental upper limit. Dropping out anomalous interactions, this result coincides with the previous calculation .
Large mixing parameters of neutrino mass eigenstates in the neutrino flavor eigenstates are determined, and interpreted as closely related to the neutrino and charged lepton mass-ratio patterns. The three known seemingly different charged lepton and quasi-degenerate neutrino deviation-from-extreme hierarchies are shown to be three particular manifestations of one unifying quadratic hierarchy-rule in lepton flavor physics.
In this paper, we consider a pair of entangled charged lepton-neutrino embedded in a constant magnetic field, which can be produced in the purely leptonic decay of charged pseudoscalar mesons. Particles with nonzero magnetic dipole moment will precess in the present of external magnetic field and induce a nontrivial noncyclic geometric phase. The dependence of this geometric phase on neutrino mass can be used to determine the Dirac/Majorana nature of massive neutrinos.
We discuss the neutrino oscillations, using texture zero mass matrices for the leptons, including radiative correction. The neutrino mixing angle theta_13 is calculated and agrees with the result of the new Daya Bay experiment.
The definition of `lepton flavour eigenstates' introduced in a recent paper hep-ph/0302045 is in disagreement with the Standard Model prediction for the structure of the leptonic charged current and implies the absence of neutrino oscillations following pion decay, in contradiction to experimental data
The permutation symmetry $S_3$ is appplied to obtain two equal Majorana neutrino masses, while maintaining three different charged-lepton masses and suppressing neutrinoless double beta decay. The resulting radiative splitting of the two neutrinos is shown to be suitable for solar neutrino vacuum oscillations.
We argue that using an equilibrated gas of neutrinos it is possible to probe the phase diagram of QCD for finite isospin and small baryon chemical potentials. We discuss this region of the phase diagram in detail and demonstrate that for large enough neutrino densities a Bose-Einstein condensate of positively charged pions arises. Moreover, we show that for nonzero neutrino density the degeneracy in the lifetimes and masses of the charged pions is lifted.
Coherent pion production in low energy neutrino reactions is discussed in the framework of the partially conserved axial vector current theory (PCAC). The role of lepton mass effects in suppressing production of positively charged pions is discussed. Instead of using models of pion nucleus scattering, the available data on pion carbon scattering are implemented for an analysis of the PCAC prediction. Our results agree well with the published upper limits for positively charged production but are much below the recent MiniBooNE result for neutral pion production.
I briefly review the arguments which in the 1970's convinced many theoretical physicists to anticipate lepton number violation, and to guess a range of neutrino masses.
We calculate single pion production by neutrinos in the resonance region. We consider both charged and neutral current reactions on free protons and neutrons. We present differential and total cross sections which can be compared with experiments. Then we use these results to calculate the spectra of the emerging pions including the Pauli suppression factor and rescattering corrections for reactions in heavy nuclei. Our results will be useful for studying single pion production and for investigating neutrino oscillations in future experiments.
We present a microscopic model for neutrino induced one-pion production off the nucleon and its implementation for the purpose of calculating coherent pion production in nuclei. We further criticize the use of the Rein--Sehgal model for coherent pion production by low energy neutrinos. In particular, we show how the approximations in that model give rise to a much flatter differential cross section in the $η=E_π(1-\cosθ_π)$ variable. We discuss the limitations intrinsic to any approach based on the partial conservation of the axial current hypothesis and the inability of such models to properl…
We examine how a parametrization of neutrino mixing matrix reflecting quark-lepton complementarity can be probed by considering phase-averaged oscillation probabilities, flavor composition of neutrino fluxes coming from atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos and lepton flavor violating radiative decays. We discuss about some distinct features of the parametrization by comparing with the triminimal parametrization of perturbations to tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing matrix.
Coherent pion production by neutrinos has been interpreted in the framework of the Partially Conserved Axial Current hypothesis (PCAC) and explicit model calculations are available. In this article we compute angular correlations for the produced pions which may help to separate the signal from the background. We present many figures useful for the experiments and compare them with another model.
If neutrinos are massive, `lepton flavour eigenstates' are absent from the amplitudes of all Standard Model processes. Measurements of $Γ(π\to e ν)/Γ(π\to μν)$ and of the MNS matrix are shown to exclude the existence of such states. Incoherent production of neutrinos of different flavour modifies the usual oscillation phase derived assuming production of a lepton flavour eigenstate. The new prediction can be tested in long line-base experiments by comparison of `$ν_μ$ disappearance' of neutrinos from pion and kaon decay.
We propose a new mechanism to explain neutrino masses with lepton number conservation, in which the Dirac neutrino masses are generated at the two-loop level involving a dark matter candidate. In this model, branching ratios of lepton flavor violating decays of the Higgs boson can be much larger than those of lepton flavor violating decays of charged leptons. If lepton flavor violating decays of the Higgs boson are observed at future collider experiments without detecting lepton flavor violating decays of charged leptons, most of the models previously proposed for tiny neutrino masses are excl…
We discuss the special class of models where nearly maximal neutrino mixing is produced through the see-saw mechanism, starting from only nearly diagonal matrices for charged leptons, Dirac neutrinos and Majorana right-handed neutrinos.
In the light of the recent measurement of the leptonic mixing angle $θ_{13}$, implications of the latest mixing data have been investigated for non-minimal textures of lepton mass matrices pertaining to Dirac neutrinos. All these texture specific lepton mass matrices have been examined for their compatibility with the latest data in the cases of normal hierarchy, inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenario of neutrino masses. The implications of all the three lepton mixing angles have been investigated on the lightest neutrino mass as well as the Jarlskog's CP violating parameter in the leptoni…
We revisit the possibility of relating lepton mixing angles with lepton mass hierarchies in a model-independent way. Guided by the existence of such relations in the quark sector, we first consider all the mixing angles, both in charged lepton and neutrino sectors to be related to the respective mass ratios. This allows us to calculate the leptonic mixing angles observed in neutrino oscillations as functions of the lightest neutrino mass. We show that for both normal and inverted hierarchical neutrino masses, this scenario does not give rise to correct leptonic mixing angles. We then show that…
In these lecture notes we present mechanisms for the generation of Majorana neutrino masses and lepton mixing. We consider simple extensions of the Standard Model. Apart from a section about radiative mass generation, we put special emphasis on the seesaw mechanism and mu-tau interchange symmetry.
We study the threshold production of two pions induced by neutrinos in nucleon targets. The contribution of nucleon pole, pion and contact terms is calculated using a chiral Lagrangian. The contribution of the Roper resonance, neglected in earlier studies, has also been taken into account.
We show how a spontaneously broken gauge theory of fermions endowed with a composite scalar multiplet becomes naturally anomaly-free, and yet describes the correct couplings of the pion to two gauge fields and to leptons: the first coupling is the same as computed from the chiral anomaly, and the second identical with that obtained from the `Partially Conserved Axial Current' hypothesis. For the sake of simplicity, we only study here the abelian case.
We discuss the most general necessary and sufficient condition for three massless light neutrinos in variants of the type I seesaw mechanism in which we introduce an arbitrary number of fermionic gauge singlets. We find that having massless light neutrinos is equivalent to enforcing the conservation of lepton number. As a consequence, any symmetry that leads to massless light neutrinos will contain as an unbroken subgroup a conserved lepton number. This will be important for searches for heavy sterile neutrinos since in general the light neutrino masses will be proportional to small lepton num…
Taking into account the latest neutrino oscillation data, we study texture zeros of the lepton mass matrices. Assuming the Dirac neutrino mass matrix M_D, the charged-lepton mass matrix M_l and the mass matrix of heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos M_R to have three texture zeros, we show that the observed neutrino mixing angles can naturally be obtained. The phenomenological implications for the neutrino mass spectrum, the CP-violating phases, the tritium beta decay and the neutrinoless double-beta decay are explored.
Charge-odd correlation of the charged pair components produced at electron-proton scattering can measure three current correlation averaged by proton state. In general these type correlation can be described by 14 structure functions. We restrict here by consideration of inclusive distributions of a pair components, which is the light-cone projection of the relevant hadronic tensor. Besides we consider the point-like approximation for proton and pion. Numerical estimations show that charge-odd effects can be measured in exclusive ep -> 2 pi X experiments.
In this talk I review the main features of the coherent/diffractive pion production by neutrinos on nuclei. The method is based on PCAC and relates the reaction $\textbf{boson} + \textbf{nucleus} \to \textbf{pion} + \textbf{nucleus}$ to elastic pion-nucleus scattering. Estimates for the expected rates and distributions in neutrino reactions are presented with the help of hadronic data. The absolute rates are significantly smaller than the older estimates which brings theory in agreement with the neutral current measurements and the bounds in charged current reactions.
Predictions for the single transverse spin asymmetry A_N in semi-inclusive DIS processes are given; non negligible values of A_N may arise from spin effects in the fragmentation of a polarized quark into a final hadron with a transverse momentum k_T with respect to the jet axis, the so-called Collins effect. The elementary single spin asymmetry of the fragmenting quark has been fixed in a previous paper, by fitting data on p(transv. polarized) + P -> pion + X, and the predictions given here are uniquely based on the assumption that the Collins effect is the only cause of the observed single sp…
If there exist only three light neutrinos below the weak scale, the neutrino masses can arise by breaking the lepton number L. One example is the Zee mechanism for the neutrino masses. We study phenomenological implications of neutrino masses arising from the L violation through introduction of SU(2) X U(1) singlet scalars with Q_{em}=1 and 2.
Assuming hierarchical neutrino masses we calculate the heavy neutrino mass scale in the seesaw mechanism from experimental data on oscillations of solar and atmospheric neutrinos and quark-lepton symmetry. The resulting scale is around or above the unification scale, unless the two lightest neutrinos have masses of opposite sign, in which case the resulting scale can be intermediate.
We examine lepton flavor violating (LFV) interactions for heavy right-handed neutrinos that exist in most of the standard model extensions that address dark matter (DM) and neutrino mass at the loop level. In order to probe the collider effect of these LFV interactions, we impose the assumption that the model parameters give the right values of the DM relic density and fulfill the constraints from the LFV processes $\ell_α\rightarrow\ell_βγ$ and $\ell_α\rightarrow3\ell_β$. We also investigate the possibility of probing these interactions, and hence the right-handed neutrino, at leptonic collid…
We study a neutrino model introducing an additional nontrivial gauged lepton symmetry where the neutrino masses are induced at two-loop level while the first and second charged-leptons of the standard model are done at one-loop level. As a result of model structure, we can predict one massless active neutrino, and there is a dark matter candidate. Then we discuss neutrino mass matrix, muon anomalous magnetic moment, lepton flavor violations, oblique parameters, and relic density of dark matter taking into account the experimental constraints.
We study the one-pion events produced via neutral current (NC) and charged current (CC) interactions by the atmospheric neutrinos. We analyze the ratios of these events in the framework of oscillations between three neutrino flavors. The ratios of the CC events induced by $ν_e$ to that of the NC events and a similar ratio defined with $ν_μ$ help us in distinguishing the different regions of the neutrino parameter space.
The current status of our knowledge of the 3-neutrino mixing parameters and of the CP violation in the lepton sector is summarised. The discrete symmetry approach to understanding the observed pattern of neutrino mixing and the related predictions for neutrino mixing angles and leptonic Dirac CP violation are reviewed.
We show that in the framework of the 3-3-1 model with right-handed neutrinos, small neutrino masses and large lepton flavor violating processes such as μ\to 3e and μ\to eγcan be obtained by just introducing an additional Higgs sextet. In the limit of vanishing of the Yukawa interaction among Higgs and lepton triplets (h^ν= 0), the decay μ\to 3e strongly depends on the neutrino mass patterns, but the μ\to eγalmost does not. The neutrino masses are not constrained by such processes in the cases of h^ν\neq 0.
Oscillations of the Dirac neutrinos of three generations in vacuum are considered with allowance made for the effect of the CP-violating leptonic phase (analogue of the quark CP phase) in the lepton mixing matrix. The general formulas for the probabilities of neutrino transition from one sort to another in oscillations are obtained as functions of three mixing angles and the CP phase. It is found that the leptonic CP phase can, in principle, be reconstructed by measuring the oscillation-averaged probabilities of neutrino transition from one sort to another. The manifestation of the CP phase as…
We examine the constraints on the MNS lepton mixing matrix from the present and future experimental data of the neutrino oscillation and lepton number violation processes. We introduce a graphical representation of the CP violation phases which appear in the lepton number violation processes such as neutrinoless double beta decay, the $μ^--e^+$ conversion, and the K decay, $K^-\toπ^+μ^-μ^-.$ Using this graphical representation, we derive the constraints on the CP violation phases in the lepton sector.
We propose a dynamical mass-generation scenario which naturally realizes the mass hierarchy among the neutrinos, charged leptons and quarks, where the mass is dominated by the self-mass induced through the anomalous (i.e. non-minimal) gauge interactions.
Comparison of properties of quark and leptons as well as understanding their similarities and differences is one of the milestones on the way to underlying physics. Several observations, if not accidental, can strongly affect the implications: (i) nearly tri-bimaximal character of lepton mixing, (ii) special neutrino symmetries, (iii) the QLC-relations. We consider possible connections between quarks and leptons which include the quark-lepton symmetry and unification, approximate universality, and quark-lepton complementarity. Presence of new neutrino states and their mixing with the left or/a…
My talk is concentrating on the quantum effects on neutrino mass and lepton flavor mixing matrices in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with the effective dimension-five operator which gives the Majorana masses of neutrinos.
Electron proton (ep) colliders could provide particle collisions at TeV energies with large data rates while maintaining the clean and pile~up-free environment of lepton colliders, which makes them very attractive for heavy neutrino searches. Heavy (mainly sterile) neutrinos with masses around the electroweak scale are proposed in low scale seesaw models for neutrino mass generation. In this paper, we analyse two of the most promising signatures of heavy neutrinos at ep colliders, the lepton-flavour violating (LFV) lepton-trijet signature and the displaced vertex signature. In the considered b…
Systematic analyses of the textures arising in lepton mass matrices have been carried out using unitary transformations and condition of naturalness for the Dirac and Majorana neutrino possibilities. It is observed that the recent three neutrino oscillation data together with the effective mass in neutrinoless double beta decay provide vital clues in predicting the general structures of these lepton mass matrices.
It can be expected from the result for the atmospheric neutrino by the SUPERKAMIOKANDE and the CHOOZ result that the the lepton-flavor violating (LFV) interaction between the second and third generations exits at the high energy scale. This leads to a non-vanishing LFV left-handed slepton mass between the second and third generations, induced by the radiative correction, in the minimal supergravity scenario. In this article, assuming that the supersymmetric standard model with the right-handed neutrinos explains the atmospheric neutrino result, we show that the reach of the LFV slepton product…
In the light of the recent measurement of the leptonic mixing angle $θ_{13}$, implications of the latest mixing data have been investigated for non-minimal textures of lepton mass matrices assuming the neutrinos to be Majorana like. Large number of possible texture specific lepton mass matrices have been examined for their compatibility with the lepton mixing data in the case of normal hierarchy, inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenario of neutrino masses. Specifically, apart from other phenomenological quantities the implications of the lepton mixing angle $θ_{13}$ have been investigated on…
We examine relation between neutrino oscillation parameters and prediction of lepton flavor violation, in light of deviations from tri-bimaximal mixing. Our study shows that upcoming experimental searches for lepton flavor violation process can provide useful implications for neutrino mass spectrum and mixing angles. With simple structure of heavy right-handed neutrino and supersymmetry breaking sectors, the discovery of tau \to mu gamma decay determines neutrino mass hierarchy if large (order 0.1) reactor angle is established.
This work represents an extension of the single pion production model proposed by D. Rein. The model consists of resonant pion production and nonresonant background contributions coming from three Born diagrams in the helicity basis. The new work includes lepton mass effects, and nonresonant interaction is described by five diagrams based on a nonlinear σ model. This work provides a full kinematic description of single pion production in the neutrino-nucleon interactions, including resonant and nonresonant interactions in the helicity basis, in order to study the interference effect.
We show that the predictions for lepton flavor violating decays, in the case of quasi-degenerate neutrinos, change drastically when we include in the computation the high-energy phases present in the matrix of neutrino Yukawa couplings.
We consider the spin polarization of leptons produced in neutrino and antineutrino nucleon deep inelastic scattering, via charged currents, and we study the positivity constraints on the spin components in a model independent way. These results are very important, in particular in the case of $τ^{\pm}$ leptons, because the polarization information is crucial in all future neutrino oscillation experiments.
The measurement of the charged-current 8B solar neutrino reaction on deuterium at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory confirms the neutrino oscillation hypothesis for the solar neutrino problem, and the result favours the solution with large neutrino mixing angles. We demonstrate that the current neutrino oscillation data (including atmospheric and reactor neutrinos) are sufficient to construct the lepton flavour mixing matrix with a reasonable accuracy. We also infer the maximum size of CP violation effects consistent with the current neutrino oscillation experiments.
The tau lepton plays important role in the correlation between the low-energy neutrino oscillation data and the lepton flavor structure in heavy neutrino decay. We investigate the lepton flavor signatures with tau lepton at hadron collider through lepton number violating (LNV) processes. In the Type I Seesaw with U$(1)_{\rm B-L}$ extension, we study the pair production of heavy neutrinos via a $Z'$ resonance. We present a detailed assessment of the search sensitivity to the channels with tau lepton in the subsequent decay of heavy neutrinos. For the benchmark model with $Z'$ only coupled to th…
Brannen has recently pointed out that the observed charged lepton masses satisfy the relation m_e +m_μ+m_τ= {2/3} (\sqrt{m_e}+\sqrt{m_μ}+\sqrt{m_τ})^2, while the observed neutrino masses satisfy the relation m_{ν1} +m_{ν2} +m_{ν3} = {2/3} (-\sqrt{m_{ν1}}+\sqrt{m_{ν2}}+\sqrt{m_{ν3}})^2. It is discussed what neutrino Yukawa interaction form is favorable if we take the fact pointed out by Brannen seriously.
We consider the bremsstrahlung and model-dependent contributions to the radiative decay $τ^- \to π^-π^0ν_τγ$ in the context of a meson dominance model. We focus on several observables related to this decay, including the branching ratio and the photon and di-pion spectra. Particular attention is paid to the sensitivity of different observables upon the effects of model-dependent contributions and of the magnetic dipole moment of the $ρ^-(770)$ vector meson. Important numerical differences are found with respect to results obtained in the framework of chiral perturbation theory.
Characteristic patterns of cosmic neutrino spectrum reported by the IceCube collaboration and long-standing inconsistency between theory and experiment in muon anomalous magnetic moment are simultaneously explained by an extra leptonic force mediated by a gauge field with a mass of the MeV scale. With different assumptions for redshift distribution of cosmic neutrino sources, diffuse neutrino flux is calculated with the scattering between cosmic neutrino and cosmic neutrino background through the new leptonic force. Our analysis sheds light on a relation among lepton physics at the three diffe…
If muon neutrinos produced in cosmological sources oscillate, neutrino telescopes can have a chance to detect tau-neutrinos. In contrast to muon neutrinos the Earth is completely transparent for tau neutrinos thanks to the short life time of tau-leptons produced in charged current interactions. Tau-lepton decaysin flight producing another tau neutrino (regeneration chain). Thus, tau neutrinos cross the Earth without being absorbed, though loosing energy both in regeneration processes and in neutral current interactions. Neutrinos of all flavors can be detected in deep underwater/ice detectors …
The notion of U(1) lepton number (which may only be softly broken) is applied to models of dark matter which interacts with leptons. Previous scotogenic models of Majorana or Dirac neutrino mass are shown to be derivable in this framework without additional symmetries. Only complete renormalizable theories are considered. An explicit class of models with $Z_n$ ($n \geq 5$) lepton and dark symmetry for Dirac neutrinos is derived, as well as an example of $Z_3$ dark symmetry.
