Quite exotic relativistic objects known as wormholes are hypothetical candidates for central machine of active galactic nuclei as well as black holes. We find the magnitude of the perihelion precession and the deflection of light in gravitational field of a wormhole and compare them with those for a black hole. The impact parameter is taken to be much larger than the wormhole throat size. We show that the relative difference between results for a black hole and a wormhole may be significant and amount to tens of percent.
Taking up a method devised by Taylor and Wheeler and collecting pieces of their work we offer a self-contained derivation of the formulae giving both the precession of the orbit of a planet around the Sun and the deflection angle of a light pulse passing near the Sun in the framework of General Relativity. The demonstration uses only elementary algebra without resorting to tensor formalism. No prior knowledge in relativity is needed to follow the presentation.
In this paper, the perihelion precession and deflection of light have been investigated in the 4-dimensional general spherically symmetric spacetime, and the main equation is obtained. As the application of this main equation, the Reissner-Nordstorm-AdS solution and Clifton-Barrow solution in $f(R)$ gravity have been taken for the examples. We find that both the electric charge and $f(R)$ gravity can affect the perihelion precession and deflection of light, while the cosmological constant can only effect the perihelion precession. Moreover, we clarify a subtlety in the deflection of light in t…
In this letter, we have investigated the deflection angle of light by wormholes using a new geometrical method known as Gibbons-Werner method (GW). In particular we have calculated the deflection angle of light in the weak limit approximation in two wormhole spacetime geometries: Ellis wormhole and Janis-Newman-Winnicour (JNW) wormhole. We have employed the famous Gauss-Bonnet theorem (GBT) to the Ellis wormhole optical geometry and JNW wormhole optical geometry, respectively. By using GBT, we computed the deflection angles in leading orders by these wormholes and our results were compared wit…
In this paper, the gravitational deflection of relativistic massive particles up to the second post-Minkowskian order by static and spherically symmetric wormholes is investigated in the weak-field limit. These wormholes include the Janis-Newman-Winicour wormhole, a class of zero Ricci scalar scalar-tensor wormholes, and a class of charged Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton wormholes. With the Jacobi metric approach, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem is employed to study the gravitational deflection. In this scheme, the deflection angle as a topological effect is considered. Moreover, we analyze the influence of…
In this paper, we calculate the weak deflection angle by Casimir wormhole and its shadow. To do so, we derive the Gaussian optical curvature and use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Then we find the deflection angle by Casimir wormhole in weak field limits. Moreover, we obtain the weak deflection angle in the presence of plasma medium and see the effect of the plasma medium on the weak deflection angle. Moreover, we study a shadow of Casimir wormhole and we plot and discuss them. We show the shadow of Casimir wormhole's behavior when changing the value of $a$.
In this paper, we first use the optical metrics of black-bounce traversable wormholes to calculate the Gaussian curvature. Then we use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to obtain the weak deflection angle of light from the black-bounce traversable wormholes. Then we investigate the effect of dark matter medium on weak deflection angle using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. We show how weak deflection angle of wormhole is affected by the bounce parameter $a$. Using the Gauss-bonnet theorem for calculating weak deflection angle shows us that light bending can be thought as a global and topological effect.
The purpose of this Comment is to point out that there are conceptual and mathematical flaws in the analysis in "Light deflection by Damour-Solodukhin wormholes and Gauss-Bonnet theorem, Phys. Rev. D 98, 044033 (2018) by Ali Övgün".
Observations of gravitational lenses in strong gravitational fields give us a clue to understanding dark compact objects. In this paper, we extend a method to obtain a deflection angle in a strong deflection limit provided by Bozza [Phys. Rev. D 66, 103001 (2002)] to apply to ultrastatic spacetimes. We also discuss on the order of an error term in the deflection angle. Using the improved method, we consider gravitational lensing by an Ellis wormhole, which is an ultrastatic wormhole of the Morris-Thorne class.
We consider gravitational lensing under a weak-field approximation and in a strong deflection limit by a Bronnikov-Kim wormhole with the same metric as the one of a wormhole which has been suggested in Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell theory. The metric approaches into the metric of an extreme charged Reissner-Nordström black hole in a black hole limit and it becomes the metric of an spatial Schwarzschild wormhole in an ultrastatic limit. In both of the black hole limit and the ultrastatic limit, the coefficient of a divergent term and the constant term of the deflection angle of a light in the strong d…
We reply to the Comment of Bhattacharya and Karimov on our paper Light deflection by Damour-Solodukhin wormholes and Gauss-Bonnet theorem [arXiv:1811.00768 [gr-qc]]. We address a number of incorrect claims made about our calculations and methodology. We show below that the claims of BK are incorrect, and that there are no problems with the results of Övgün's paper or its implications.
In this paper, using the recent method proposed by Ono, Ishihara and Asada (OIA) who extend the idea of Gibbons and Werner to the stationary and axisymmetric case, we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the optical metric of the non-rotating and rotating Damour-Solodukhin wormholes spacetimes to study the weak gravitational lensing by these objects. Furthermore, we study the strong gravitational lensing by the non-rotating Damour-Solodukhin wormholes using the Bozza's method to see the differences between the weak lensing and the strong lensing. We demonstrate the relation between the strong def…
Static, spherically symmetric black holes and compact objects without an event horizon have unstable (stable) circular orbits of a light called photon (antiphoton) sphere. A Damour-Solodukhin wormhole has been suggested as a simple black hole mimicker and the difference of its metric tensors from a black hole is described by a dimensionless parameter $λ$. The wormhole with two flat regions has two photon spheres and an antiphoton sphere for $λ<\sqrt{2}/2$ and a photon sphere for $λ\geq \sqrt{2}/2$. When the parameter $λ$ is $\sqrt{2}/2$, the photon sphere is marginally unstable because of dege…
In this paper, we study the deflection of light by a class of charged wormholes within the context of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. The primordial wormholes are predicted to exist in the early universe, where inflation driven by the dilaton field. We perform our analysis through optical geometry using the Gibbons-Werner method (GW), by adopting the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the standard geodesics approach. We report an interesting result for the deflection angle in leading-order terms--namely, the deflection angle increases due to the electric charge $Q$ and the magnetic charge $P$, wher…
We reexamine the light deflection by an Ellis wormhole. The bending angle as a function of the ratio between the impact parameter and the throat radius of the wormhole is obtained in terms of a complete elliptic integral of the first kind. This result immediately yields asymptotic expressions in the weak field approximation. It is shown that an expression for the deflection angle derived (and used) in recent papers is valid at the leading order but it breaks down at the next order because of the nontrivial spacetime topology.
The deflection angle of a light ray can be arbitrarily large near a light sphere. The time-symmetrical shape of light curves of a pair of light rays reflected by a light sphere of a lens object does not depend on the details of the lens object. We consider retrolensing light curves of sunlight with deflection angles $π$ and $3π$ by an Ellis wormhole, which is the simplest Morris-Thorne wormhole. If an Ellis wormhole with a throat parameter $a=10^{11}$ km is $100$ pc away from an observer and if the Ellis wormhole, the observer, and the sun are aligned perfectly in this order, the apparent magn…
This paper is devoted to compute the weak deflection angle for Kalb-Ramond traversable wormhole solution in plasma and dark matter mediums by using the method of Gibbons and Werner. To acquire our results, we evaluate Gaussian optical curvature by utilizing the Gauss-Bonnet theorem in the weak field limits. We also investigate the graphical influence of deflection angle $\tildeα$ with respect to the impact parameter $σ$ and minimal radius $r_0$ in plasma medium. Moreover, we derive the deflection angle by using different method known as Keeton and Petters method. We also examine that if we rem…
We consider the problem of gravitational deflection of a propagating relativistic massive particles by rotating black holes (Kerr black holes) and rotating wormholes (Teo wormholes) in the weak limit approximation. In particular we have introduced an alternative way to calculate the deflection angle for massive particles based on the refractive index of the optical media and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem applied to the isotropic optical metrics. The refractive index governing the propagation of massive particles is calculated by considering those particles as a de Broglie wave packets. Finally appl…
We study the gravitational deflection of relativistic massive particles by Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) spacetimes (also known as a rotating source with a surface-like naked singularity), and a rotating Kerr-like wormholes. Based on the recent article [K. Jusufi, Phys. Rev. D 98, 064017 (2018)], we extend some of these results by exploring the effects of naked singularity and Kerr-like objects on the deflection of particles. We start by introducing coordinate transformation leading to an isotropic line element which gives the refraction index of light for the corresponding optical medias. On th…
In this paper the deflection angle of light by a rotating Teo wormhole spacetime is calculated in the weak limit approximation. We mainly focus on the weak deflection angle by revealing the gravitational lensing as a partially global topological effect. We apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem (GBT) to the optical geometry osculating the Teo-Randers wormhole optical geometry to calculate the deflection angle. Furthermore we find the same result using the standard geodesic method. We have found that the deflection angle can be written as a sum of two terms, namely the first term is proportional to the…

In this review, various researches on finding the bending angle of light deflected by a massive gravitating object which regard the Gauss-Bonnet theorem as the premise have been revised. Primarily, the Gibbons and Werner method is studied apropos of the gravitational lensing phenomenon in the weak field limits. Some exclusive instances are deliberated while calculating the deflection angle, beginning with the finite-distance corrections on non-asymptotically flat spacetimes. Effects of plasma medium is then inspected to observe its contribution to the deflection angle. Finally, the Jacobi metr…
Weak gravitational lensing by black holes and wormholes in the context of massive gravity (Bebronne and Tinyakov 2009) theory is studied. The particular solution examined is characterized by two integration constants, the mass $M$ and an extra parameter $S$ namely `scalar charge'. These black hole reduce to the standard Schwarzschild black hole solutions when the scalar charge is zero and the mass is positive. In addition, a parameter $λ$ in the metric characterizes so-called 'hair'. The geodesic equations are used to examine the behavior of the deflection angle in four relevant cases of the p…
In this letter, we use a recent wormhole solution known as a ringhole [Gonzalez-Diaz, Phys.\ Rev.\ D {\bf 54}, 6122, 1996] to determine the surface topology and the deflection angle of light in the weak limit approximation using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem (GBT). We apply the GBT and show that the surface topology at the wormhole throat is indeed a torus by computing the Euler characteristic number. As a special case of the ringhole solution, one can find the Ellis wormhole which has the surface topology of a 2-sphere at the wormhole throat. The most interesting results of this paper concerns the…
By using a method improved with a generalized optical metric, the deflection of light for an observer and source at finite distance from a lens object in a stationary, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat spacetime has been recently discussed [Ono, Ishihara, Asada, Phys. Rev. D 96, 104037 (2017)]. By using this method, in the weak field approximation, we study the deflection angle of light for an observer and source at finite distance from a rotating Teo wormhole, especially by taking account of the contribution from the geodesic curvature of the light ray in a space associated with the genera…
A Simpson-Visser spacetime has two nonnegative parameters $a$ and $m$ and its metric is correspond with (i) a Schwarzschild metric for $a=0$ and $m\neq0$, (ii) a regular black hole metric for $a<2m$, (iii) a one-way traversable wormhole metric for $a=2m$, (vi) a two-way traversable wormhole metric for $a>2m$, and (v) an Ellis-Bronnikov wormhole metric for $a\neq0$ and $m=0$. The spacetime is one of the most useful spacetimes for the purpose of comprehensively understanding gravitational lensing of light rays reflected by a photon sphere of black holes and wormholes. We have investigated gravit…
We study the equations of motion of the massive and massless particles in the Schwarzschild geometry of general relativity by using the Laplace-Adomian Decomposition Method, which proved to be extremely successful in obtaining series solutions to a wide range of strongly nonlinear differential and integral equations. After introducing a general formalism for the derivation of the equations of motion in arbitrary spherically symmetric static geometries, and of the general mathematical formalism of the Laplace-Adomian Decomposition Method, we obtain the series solution of the geodesics equation …
In this work, we calculate the deflection angle of light in a spacetime that interpolates between regular black holes and traversable wormholes, depending on the free parameter of the metric. Afterwards, this angular deflection is substituted into the lens equations which allows to obtain physically measurable results, such as the position of the relativistic images and the magnifications.
In this paper, we analyze the deflection angle of light by Brane-Dicke wormhole in the weak field limit approximation to find the effect of the Brane-Dicke coupling parameter on the weak gravitation lensing. For this purpose, we consider new geometric techniques, i.e., Gauss-Bonnet theorem and optical geometry in order to calculate the deflection angle. Furthermore, we verify our results by considering the most familiar geodesic technique. Moreover, we establish the quantum corrected metric of Brane-Dicke wormhole by replacing the classical geodesic with Bohmian trajectories, whose matter sour…
Two different ways of generalizing Einstein's general theory of relativity with a cosmological constant to Brans-Dicke type scalar-tensor theories are investigated in the linearized field approximation. In the first case a cosmological constant term is coupled to a scalar field linearly whereas in the second case an arbitrary potential plays the role of a variable cosmological term. We see that the former configuration leads to a massless scalar field whereas the latter leads to a massive scalar field. General solutions of these linearized field equations for both cases are obtained correspond…
A recent study by Rahaman et al. has shown that the galactic halo possesses the necessary properties for supporting traversable wormholes, based on two observational results, the density profile due to Navarro et al. and the observed flat rotation curves of galaxies. Using a method for calculating the deflection angle pioneered by V. Bozza, it is shown that the deflection angle diverges at the throat of the wormhole. The resulting photon sphere has a radius of 0.40 ly. Given the dark-matter background, detection may be possible from past data using ordinary light.
In this paper, we study the deflection of light by a class of phantom black hole and wormhole solutions in the weak limit approximation. More specifically, in the first part of this work, we study the deflection of light by Garfinkle-Horowitz-Ströminger black hole and Einstein-Maxwell anti-dilaton black hole using the optical geometry and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Our calculations show that gravitational lensing is affected by the phantom scalar field (phantom dilaton). In the second part of this work, we explore the deflection of light by a class of asymptotically flat phantom wormholes. In p…
Natural wormholes and its astrophysical signatures have been sugested in various oportunities. By applying the strong field limit of gravitational lensing theory, we calculate the deflection angle and magnification curves produced by Morris-Thorne wormholes in asimptotically flat space-times. The results show that wormholes act like convergent lenses. Therefore, we show that it is hard to distinguish them from black holes using the deflection's angle of the gravitational lens effect, in contrast with the results reported by Cramer et.al. and Safanova et.al. However, we also show that it is pos…
Gravitational lensing by the light sphere of compact objects like black holes and wormholes will give us information on the compact objects. In this paper, we provide an improved strong deflection limit analysis in a general asymptotically flat, static, spherically symmetric spacetime. The strong deflection limit analysis also works in ultrastatic spacetimes. As an example of an ultrastatic spacetime, we reexamine the deflection angle in the strong deflection limit in an Ellis wormhole spacetime. Using the strong deflection limit, we obtain the deflection angle analytically for the Reissner-No…
In this paper, we study the deflection angle for wormhole-like static aether solution by using Gibbons and Werner technique in non-plasma, plasma, and dark matter mediums. For this purpose, we use optical spacetime geometry to calculate the Gaussian optical curvature, then implement the Gauss-Bonnet theorem in weak field limits. Moreover, we compute the deflection angle by using a technique known as Keeton and Petters technique. Furthermore, we analyze the graphical behavior of the bending angle $ψ$ with respect to the impact parameter $b$, mass $m$ as an integration constant, and parameter $q…
We discuss the peculiarities of gravitational lensing by spherically symmetric wormholes if they are not symmetric with respect to their throats. It is noticed, in particular, that wormholes always contain the so-called photon spheres, near which the photon deflection angles can be arbitrarily large, but, in general, the throat is such a sphere only for symmetric wormholes. In some cases, photons from outside can cross the throat and return back from a neighborhood of a photon sphere if the latter is located beyond the throat. Two families of generally asymmetric wormhole configurations are co…
We study gravitational lensing by a class of zero Ricci scalar wormholes which arise as solutions in a scalar-tensor theory of gravity. An attempt is made to find a possible link between lensing features, stable/unstable photon orbits and the energy conditions on the matter required to support these spacetimes. Our analysis shows (for this class of wormholes) that light rays always exhibit a positive deflection if the energy conditions are satisfied (nonexotic matter content). In contrast, if the energy conditions are violated (exotic matter), the net deflection of a light ray may be positive,…
In this study, we found a new traversable wormhole solution in the framework of a bumblebee gravity model. With these types of models, the Lorentz symmetry violation arises from the dynamics of a bumblebee vector field that is non-minimally coupled with gravity. To this end, we checked the wormhole's flare-out and energy (null, weak, and strong) conditions. We then studied the deflection angle of light in the weak limit approximation using the Gibbons-Werner method. In particular, we show that the bumblebee gravity effect leads to a non-trivial global topology of the wormhole spacetime. By usi…
We have investigated the gravitational lensing by two wormholes, viz., Janis-Newman-Winnicour (JNW) wormhole and Ellis wormhole. The deflection angle in the strong field limit is calculated and various lens parameters of two wormholes are compared. It is shown that the JNW wormhole exhibits the relativistic images, while the Ellis wormhole does not have any relativistic images due to the absence of its photon sphere.
In this paper, we use the Gauss Bonnet theorem to obtain the deflection angle by the photons coupled to Weyl tensor in a Schwarzschild black hole and Schwarzschild-like black hole in bumblebee gravity in the weak limit approximation. To do so, we first calculate the corresponding optical metrics, and then we find the Gaussian curvature to use in Gauss-Bonnet theorem, which is first done by Gibbons and Werner. Hence, in the leading order terms we show the deflection angle, that is affected by the coupling between the photon and Weyl tensor, and there is a deviation from the deflecting angle as …
Wormholes are one of the most interesting topological features in spacetime, offering a rat run between two vastly separated regions of the universe. In this paper, we study the deflection angle of light by wormholes, which are supported by electric charge, magnetic charge, and scalar fields in the weak field limit approximation. To this end, we apply new geometric methods -- the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the optical geometry -- to compute the deflection angles. We also verify our findings by using the well-known geodesics method. There exists a similarity between the charge and the quantum cor…
Gravitational lensing is a good probe into the topological structure of dark gravitating celestial objects. In this paper, we investigate the light curve of a light ray that passes through the throat of an Ellis wormhole, the simplest example of traversable wormholes. The method developed here is also applicable to other traversable wormholes. To study whether the light curve of a light ray that passes through a wormhole throat is distinguishable from that which does not, we also calculate light curves without the passage of a throat for an Ellis wormhole, a Schwarzschild black hole, and an ul…
It has been recently shown that Hoyle-Narlikar's C-field theory admits wormhole geometry. We derive the deflection angle of light rays caused by C-field wormhole in the strong field limit approach of gravitational lensing theory. The linearized stability of C-field wormhole under spherically symmetric perturbations about static equilibrium is also explored.
We obtain static multi-polytropic wormhole solutions in the framework of GR gravity. The resulting metric is asymptotically Minkowskian, and locally that of a wormhole. We also examine gravitational lensing by the wormhole, and calculate the deflection angle for weak and strong field limits. We investigate microlensing in the weak field limit and obtain corresponding light curves for both galactic and extragalactic situations. We discuss the multi-polytropic equation of state for the energy-momentum tensor which supports this geometry and finally, we check for the satisfaction of the weak ener…
We investigate gravitational lensing by a primary photon sphere which is a sphere filled with unstable circular light orbits, and by a secondary photon sphere on a wormhole throat in a black-bounce spacetime which is suggested in [F. S. N. Lobo, M. E. Rodrigues, M. V. d. S. Silva, A. Simpson, and M. Visser, Phys. Rev. D 103, 084052 (2021)] in strong deflection limits. There is an antiphoton sphere between the primary photon sphere and the secondary photon sphere. If a light source and an observer are on the same side of the wormhole throat, in addition to an infinite number of images slightly …
We investigate gravitational lensing and particle motions around non-asymptotically flat black hole spacetime in non-linear, ghost-free massive gravity theory, called de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity. Deflection angle formulae are derived in terms of perihelion parameter. The deflection angle can be positive, zero or even negative with various perihelion distance. The negative angle reveals repulsive behaviour of gravity from a linear term $γ$ in the dRGT black hole solution. We also find an analytically approximated formula of deflection angle in two regimes: large and small $γ…
We consider the Brill metric which is an electrovacuum solution to Einstein's field equation. It depends on three parameters, a mass parameter $m$, a NUT parameter $l$ and a charge parameter $e$. If the charge parameter is small, the metric describes a black hole; if it is sufficiently big, it describes a wormhole. We determine the relevant lensing features both in the black-hole and in the wormhole case. In particular, we give formulas for the photon spheres, for the angular radius of the shadow and for the deflection angle. We illustrate the lensing features with the help of an effective pot…
We obtain a static spherically symmetric wormhole solution due to the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of a Kalb-Ramond field. The Kalb-Ramond VEV is a background tensor field which produces a local Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB) of spacetime. Considering a non-minimal coupling between the Kalb-Ramond (VEV) and the Ricci tensor, we found an exact traversable wormhole solution sustained by matter sources with a negative isotropic pressure. The matter source satisfies the energy conditions at the throat for particular choices of the LSB parameter. Moreover, we employ the Gauss-Bonnet method to an…
In this paper, we investigate the gravitational bending angle due to the Casimir wormholes, which consider the Casimir energy as the source. Furthermore, some of these Casimir wormholes regard Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) corrections of Casimir energy. We use the Ishihara method for the Jacobi metric, which allows us to study the bending angle of light and massive test particles for finite distances. Beyond the uncorrected Casimir source, we consider many GUP corrections, namely: the Kempf, Mangano and Mann (KMM) model, the Detournay, Gabriel and Spindel (DGS) model, and the so-call…
The perihelion precession, the deflection of light, and the radar echo delay are classical tests of General Relativity here used to probe brane world topologically charged black holes in a f(R) bulk and to constrain the parameter that arises from the Shiromizu-Maeda-Sasaki procedure applied to a f(R) bulk as well. The existing Solar system observational data constrain the possible values of the tidal charge parameter and the effective cosmological constant including f(R) brane world effects. We show that the observational/experimental data for both perihelion precession and radar echo delay ma…
