We present Hubble ACS images of thirteen dust reddened Type-1 quasars selected from the FIRST/2MASS Red Quasar Survey. These quasars have high intrinsic luminosities after correction for dust obscuration (-23.5 > M_B > -26.2 from K-magnitude). The images show strong evidence of recent or ongoing interaction in eleven of the thirteen cases, even before the quasar nucleus is subtracted. None of the host galaxies are well fit by a simple elliptical profile. The fraction of quasars showing interaction is significantly higher than the 30% seen in samples of host galaxies of normal, unobscured quasars. There is a weak correlation between the amount of dust reddening and the magnitude of interaction in the host galaxy, measured using the Gini coefficient and the Concentration index. Although few host galaxy studies of normal quasars are matched to ours in intrinsic quasar luminosity, no evidence has been found for a strong dependence of merger activity on host luminosity in samples of the host galaxies of normal quasars. We thus believe that the high merger fraction in our sample is related to their obscured nature, with a significant amount of reddening occurring in the host galaxy. The red quasar phenomenon seems to have an evolutionary explanation, with the young quasar spending the early part of its lifetime enshrouded in an interacting galaxy. This might be further indication of a link between AGN and starburst galaxies.
We present results from NICMOS Hubble Space Telescope observations of the reddened bulge globular clusters NGC 6528, Terzan 5, Liller 1, UKS 1 and Terzan 4, obtained through the filters F110W and F160W (nearly equivalent to J and H). For the first time the turnoff region of Liller 1 and the main sequence of Terzan 5 and Terzan 4 are reached, as well as the horizontal branch of UKS 1. The magnitude difference between the turnoff and the red horizontal branch $Δm_{110}=m_{110}^{HB}- m_{110}^{TO}$ is used as an age indicator. From comparisons with new isochrones in the NICMOS photometric system, …
We present HST/WFPC2 images of a prominent externally-ionized molecular globule in the Carina Nebula (NGC3372), supplemented with ground-based IR images and visual-wavelength spectra. This molecular globule has a shape resembling a human hand, with an extended finger that points toward its likely source of ionizing radiation. The dominant ionizing source of the globule is either the WNL star WR25 (HD93162), the O4 If-type star Tr16-244, or perhaps both. We estimate a mass-loss rate of ~2e-5 Msun/yr from the main evaporating surface of the globule, suggesting a remaining lifetime of 10^5.3 to 1…
3C 318 is a z=1.574 radio-loud quasar. The small physical size of its radio jets indicate that these jets were triggered relatively recently. In addition to the ultraviolet continuum emission being reddened by dust, detections with IRAS and SCUBA show it to have an exceptionally high far-infrared luminosity. We present CO(2-1) observations of 3C 318 made with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer. We detect CO(2-1) emission with a FWHM=200 km/s at a signal-to-noise ratio of 5.4. There is evidence for positional (~ 20 kpc) and velocity (~ -400 km/s) offsets between the molecular gas and the q…
Heckman et al. (2005) used the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) UV imaging survey to show that there exists a rare population of nearby compact UV-luminous galaxies (UVLGs) that closely resembles high redshift Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). We present HST images in the UV, optical, and Ha, and resimulate them at the depth and resolution of the GOODS/UDF fields to show that the morphologies of UVLGs are also similar to those of LBGs. Our sample of 8 LBG analogs thus provides detailed insight into the connection between star formation and LBG morphology. Faint tidal features or companions can be …
We present the results of a programme of thermal-IR imaging of nineteen z~1 radio galaxies from the 3CR and 3CRR samples. We detect emission at L' (3.8um) from four objects; in each case the emission is unresolved at 1" resolution. Fifteen radio galaxies remain undetected to sensitive limits of L'~15.5. Using these data in tandem with archived HST data and near-IR spectroscopy we show that 3 of the detected `radio galaxies' (3C22, 3C41, and 3C65) harbour quasars reddened by Av<5. Correcting for this reddening 3C22 and 3C41 are very similar to coeval 3C quasars, whilst 3C65 seems unusually unde…
We use Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS) longslit low-resolution spectroscopy from 1150A to 10,300A to study the physical conditions in the narrow-line region (NLR) of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Markarian 3. We find from the HeII 1640/4686 line ratio and the Balmer decrement that the extinction within Markarian 3 along the line-of-sight to the NLR is best characterized by a Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) type extinction curve. We observe an extinction gradient increasing from west to east along the STIS slit in both line and continuum emission. We infer from this g…
We present near-IR spectroscopy and HST imaging of EROJ164023, an Extremely Red Object (ERO) with R-K=5.9 at z=1.05. EROJ164023 is a disk galaxy, with an optical/IR spectral energy distribution which is strongly reddened by dust (L_FIR/L_B<~200; A_V~5). The narrow emission lines (~300km/s) and the high [NII]/Halpha line ratio indicate that this is a ``composite'' starburst-Seyfert galaxy. Assuming that star formation dominates, we constrain the SFR to be 10-700Mo/yr from a variety of indicators. We compare EROJ164023 with the only other spectroscopically identified dusty EROs: HR10 (z=1.44) an…
Using the HST WFPC2 we perform deep I-band imaging of 9 radio-selected (limit 14 microJanskys at 8.5 GHz) faint galaxies from Roche, Lowenthal and Koo (2002). Two are also observed in V. Six of the galaxies have known redshifs of 0.4<z<1.0. Radial intensity profiles indicate that 7 are disk galaxies and 2 are bulge-dominated. Four of the six with redshifts have a high optical surface brightness compared to typical disk galaxies. Two of the 9 galaxies are in close interacting pairs, another two are very asymmetric and three have large, luminous rings resembling the collisional starburst rings i…
We present results of near infrared imaging of the disk-galaxy-merger NGC 6240 using adaptive optics on the Keck II Telescope and reprocessed archival data from NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope. Both the North and South nuclei of NGC 6240 are clearly elongated, with considerable sub-structure within each nucleus. In K' band there are at least two point-sources within the North nucleus; we tentatively identify the south-western point-source within the North nucleus as the position of one of the two AGNs. Within the South nucleus, the northern sub-nucleus is more highly reddened. Based upon …
We present a comprehensive study of the z=0.43 host galaxy of GRB 990712, involving ground-based photometry, spectroscopy, and HST imaging. The broad-band UBVRIJHKs photometry is used to determine the global spectral energy distribution (SED) of the host galaxy. Comparison with that of known galaxy types shows that the host is similar to a moderately reddened starburst galaxy with a young stellar population. The estimated internal extinction in the host is Av=0.15+/-0.1 and the star-formation rate (SFR) from the UV continuum is 1.3+/-0.3 M_sun/yr, (not corrected for the effects of extinction).…
We present high quality long-slit spectra for three nearby powerful radio galaxies 3C293, 3C305, PKS1345+12. These were taken with the aim of characterising the young stellar populations (YSP), and thereby investigating the evolution of the host galaxies, as well as the events that triggered the activity. Isochrone spectral synthesis modelling of the wide wavelength coverage spectra of nuclear and off-nuclear continuum-emitting regions have been used to estimate the ages, masses and luminosities of the YSP component, taking full account of reddening effects and potential contamination by activ…
We analyzed HST images of 31 nearby (z <~ 0.1) 3CR radio-galaxies. We compared their UV and optical images to detect evidence of recent star formation. Six objects were excluded because they are highly nucleated or had very low UV count rates. After subtracting the emission from their nuclei and/or jets, 12 of the remaining 25 objects, presenting an UV/optical colors NUV - r < 5.4, are potential star-forming candidates. Considering the contamination from other AGN-related processes (UV emission lines, nebular continuum, and scattered nuclear light), there are 6 remaining star-forming "blue" ga…
Dusty starbursts were more numerous around z~1 than today and appear to be responsible for the majority of cosmic star formation over the Hubble time. We suggest that they represent a common phase within galaxies in general which is triggered by the growth of cosmic structure. We discuss the origin of the luminosity of luminous infrared galaxies at z~1. Are these galaxies dominated by star formation or nuclear activity ? What is triggering their strong activity ? Is it triggered by external interactions or did it happen naturally within isolated galaxies ? We present HST-ACS high resolution op…
We imaged a set of 15 intermediate redshift (z~0.8) luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) with the Keck Laser Guide Star (LGS) AO facility. These galaxies were selected from the GOODS-S field, allowing us to combine the high spatial resolution HST optical (B, V, i, and z-bands) images with our near-infrared (K'-band) images to study the LIRG morphologies and spatially resolved spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Two thirds of the LIRGs are disk galaxies, with only one third showing some evidence for interactions, minor, or major mergers. In contrast with local LIRG disks (which are primarily ba…
We present new HST NICMOS observations of NGC 4945, a starburst galaxy hosting a highly obscured active nucleus that is one of the brightest extragalactic sources at 100 keV. The HST data are complemented with ground based [FeII] line and mid--IR observations. A 100pc-scale starburst ring is detected in Pa alpha, while H_2 traces the walls of a super bubble opened by supernova-driven winds. The conically shaped cavity is particularly prominent in Pa alpha equivalent width and in the Pa alpha/H_2 ratio. Continuum images are heavily affected by dust extinction and the nucleus of the galaxy is lo…
We present MERLIN and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the central region of the nearby radio galaxy 3C305 and use them to study the gas and dust in this object. The MERLIN observations are of neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption against the strong non-thermal 20cm continuum seen towards the central 4kpc of 3C305. Our 0.2-arcsec (160 pc) resolution observations show that the HI absorption is highly localised against the south-western radio-emission with column densities 1.9x10^21/cm2. The absorption is broad and red-shifted by 130 km/s relative to the systemic velocity. The HST images …
Millimeter CO(1-0) interferometry and high resolution, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) 1.1, 1.6, and 2.2 micron imaging of the radio compact galaxy PKS 1345+12 are presented. With an infrared luminosity of 2x10^{12} L_sun, PKS 1345+12 is a prime candidate for studying the link between the ultraluminous infrared galaxy phenomenon and radio galaxies. These new observations probe the molecular gas distribution and obscured nuclear regions of PKS 1345+12 and provide morphological support for the idea that the radio activity in powerful radio galaxies is triggered by the merger of gas rich galaxies. T…
We present a study of the optical spectrum of the fascinating B[e] star Hen 2-90 based on new high-resolution observations taken with FEROS at the ESO 1.52m telescope in La Silla (Chile). The recent HST image of Hen 2-90 (Sahai et al. 2002) reveals a bipolar, highly ionized region, a neutral disk-like structure seen almost perfectly edge-on, and an intermediate region of moderate ionization. The slits of our observations cover the same innermost region of Hen 2-90 as the HST image, which allows us to combine the observations. Our spectra contain a huge amount of permitted and forbidden emissio…
To study the relevance of mergers for the fueling of QSOs, we are currently conducting an HST imaging campaign of a sample of QSO host galaxies classified as ellipticals in the literature. Here, we present results from a study of the first five QSO host galaxies imaged with HST/ACS. For the majority of objects, strong signs of interactions such as tidal tails, shells, and other fine structure are revealed. We estimate the nature and age of the merger by comparing the images with numerical simulations. The merger ages range between a few hundred Myr up to a Gyr. These timescales are comparable …
We present the results of a multiwavelength study of the z = 0.31 radio source PKS2250-41. Integral field unit and long-slit spectroscopy obtained using VIMOS and FORS1 on the VLT, and archival HST optical imaging observations are used to study the morphology, kinematics and ionisation state of the extended emission line region (EELR) surrounding this source, and also a companion galaxy at a similar redshift. Near-infrared imaging observations obtained using the NTT are used to analyse the underlying galaxy morphologies. The EELR displays a complex variety of different gas kinematics and ioniz…
We present HST WFPC2 observations, supplemented by ground-based H-alpha data, of the star-cluster populations in two pairs of interacting galaxies, selected for being in very different kinds of encounters seen at different stages. Dynamical information and n-body simulations provide the details of encounter geometry, mass ratio, and timing. In NGC 5752/4, we see a weak encounter well past closest approach, after about 2.5x10^8 years. The large spiral NGC 5754 has a normal population of disk clusters, while the companion NGC 5752 exhibits a rich population of luminous clusters with a flatter lu…
The Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe (DEEP) is a series of spectroscopic surveys of faint galaxies, targeted at the properties and clustering of galaxies at redshifts z ~ 1. We present the redshift catalog of the DEEP 1 GSS pilot phase of this project, a Keck/LRIS survey in the HST/WFPC2 Groth Survey Strip. The redshift catalog and data, including reduced spectra, are publicly available through a Web-accessible database. The catalog contains 658 secure galaxy redshifts with a median z=0.65, and shows large-scale structure walls to z = 1. We find a bimodal distribution in the galaxy color-…
We have discovered a concentration of extremely red objects (EROs; R-K>6) in the field of the z=2.69 quasar QSO 1213-0017 (UM 485), which is significantly overabundant compared to the field ERO surface density. The optical/near-IR colors of the EROs and numerous other red galaxies in this field are consistent with elliptical galaxies at z=1-2. HST optical images for a subset of galaxies show regular morphologies, most of them being disky or diffuse and without any obvious evidence for interactions. Ground-based IR images show similar morphologies, indicating any dust reddening in these objects…
We present a study of galaxies in the STAGES survey of the Abell 901/902 supercluster at z~0.165, based on HST ACS F606W, COMBO-17, Spitzer 24um, XMM-Newton X-ray, and gravitational lensing maps. We characterize galaxies with strong, externally-triggered morphological distortions and normal, relatively undisturbed galaxies, using visual classification and quantitative CAS parameters. We compare normal and distorted galaxies in terms of their frequency, distribution within the cluster, star formation properties, and relationship to dark matter (DM) or surface mass density, and intra-cluster med…
We assess the global properties of associated C IV 1548,1550 absorption lines measured in the spectra of radio-loud quasars drawn from a near-complete, low-frequency selected sample. The observations span restframe C IV in two redshift ranges -- 0.7<z<1.0 and 1.5<z<3.0 -- which were targetted in the UV with HST/STIS and in the optical with ground-based telescopes, respectively. First, we corroborate trends for C IV associated absorption to be found preferentially in steep-spectrum and lobe-dominated quasars, implying the absorbing material tends to lie away from the radio-jet axis. Furthermore…
We present new near-IR and optical spectroscopic observations which confirm the redshift of the z=1.44 extremely red object ERO J164502+4626.4 (object 10 of Hu & Ridgway 1994) and a HST image which reveals a reflected-S-shaped morphology at (rest-frame) near-UV wavelengths. The contrast between the rest-frame far-red (8200-9800A) and near-UV (2900-3900A) morphologies suggests that the central regions of the galaxy are heavily obscured by dust and that the galaxy is most likely an interacting or disturbed system. We also present new photometry of this object at 450, 850 and 1350 microns obtaine…
We investigate the properties of massive galaxies at z=1-3.5 using HST observations, ground-based near-IR imaging, and Spitzer Space Telescope observations at 3-24 micron. We identify 153 distant red galaxies (DRGs) with J-K > 2.3 mag (Vega) in the southern GOODS field. This sample is approximately complete in stellar mass for passively evolving galaxies above 10^11 solar masses and z < 3. The galaxies identified by this selection are roughly split between objects whose optical and near-IR rest-frame light is dominated by evolved stars combined with ongoing star formation, and galaxies whose l…
We present RIJHK imaging of seven radio galaxies from the 7C Redshift Survey (7CRS) which lack strong emission lines and we use these data to investigate their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with models which constrain their redshifts. Six of these seven galaxies have extremely red colours (R-K>5.5) and we find that almost all of them lie in the redshift range 1<z<2. We also present near-infrared spectroscopy of these galaxies which demonstrate that their SEDs are not dominated by emission lines, although tentative lines, consistent with H-alpha at z=1.45 and z=1.61, are found in two obj…
Stephan's Quintet (SQ) is a compact group of galaxies that has been well studied since its discovery in 1877 but is mysterious using cold dark matter hierarchical clustering cosmology (CDMHCC). Anomalous red shifts z = (0.0027,0.019, 0.022, 0.022, 0.022) among galaxies in SQ either; reduce it to a Trio with two highly improbable intruders from CDMHCC, or support the Arp (1973) hypothesis that its red shifts may be intrinsic. An alternative is provided by the Gibson 1996-2000 hydro-gravitational-theory (HGT) where superclusters, clusters and galaxies all originate by universe expansion and grav…
We present Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI 21-cm line data for the smallest known eXtremely Metal Deficient (XMD) blue compact galaxy (BCG) HS0822+3542. From HST imaging it has been suggested that HS0822+3542 actually consists of two still smaller (~ 100pc sized) ultra-compact dwarfs that are in the process of merging. The brighter of these two putative ultra compact dwarfs has an ocular appearance, similar to that seen in galaxies that have suffered a penetrating encounter with a smaller companion. From our HI imaging we find that the gas distribution and kinematics in this object a…
We present a study of galaxies in the Abell 901/902 Supercluster at z~0.165, based on HST ACS F606W, COMBO-17, Spitzer 24um, XMM-Newton X-ray, and gravitational lensing maps, as part of the STAGES survey. We characterize galaxies with strong externally-triggered morphological distortions and normal relatively undisturbed galaxies, using visual classification and quantitative CAS parameters. We compare normal and distorted galaxies in terms of their frequency, distribution within the cluster, star formation properties, and relationship to dark matter (DM) or surface mass density, and intra-clus…
We present optical, near-infrared, and X-ray observations of the optical afterglow (OA) of the X-ray rich, long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 011211. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data obtained 14, 26, 32, and 59 days after the burst, show the host galaxy to have a morphology that is fairly typical of blue galaxies at high redshift. We measure its magnitude to be R = 24.95 +/- 0.11. We detect a break in the OA R-band light curve which is naturally accounted for by a collimated outflow geometry. By fitting a broken power-law to the data we find a best fit with a break 1.56 +/- 0.02 days after the…
We present results from a pilot HST ACS deep imaging study in broad-band V of five low-redshift QSO host galaxies classified in the literature as ellipticals. The aim of our study is to determine whether these early-type hosts formed at high redshift and have since evolved passively, or whether they have undergone relatively recent mergers that may be related to the triggering of the nuclear activity. We perform two-dimensional modeling of the light distributions to analyze the host galaxies' morphology. We find that, while each host galaxy is reasonably well fitted by a de Vaucouleurs profile…
We present high spatial resolution 21cm HI observations of EA01A and EA01B, a pair of interacting post-starburst, or E+A, galaxies at z = 0.0746. Based on optical HST/WFPC2 images, both galaxies are known to display disturbed morphologies. They also appear to be linked by a bridge of stars. Previous HI observations Chang et al. (2001) had already uncovered sizable quantities of neutral gas in or near these galaxies but they lacked the spatial resolution to locate the gas with any precision within this galactic binary system. We have analysed deep, high resolution archival VLA observations of t…
We present deep HST ACS/WFC photometry of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1569, one of the closest and strongest nearby starburst galaxies. These data allow us, for the first time, to unequivocally detect the tip of the red giant branch and thereby determine the distance to NGC 1569. We find that this galaxy is 3.36 +/- 0.20 Mpc away, considerably farther away than the typically assumed distance of 2.2 +/- 0.6 Mpc. Previously thought to be an isolated galaxy due to its shorter distance, our new distance firmly establishes NGC 1569 as a member of the IC 342 group of galaxies. The higher density …
We present deep HST/ACS images and Keck spectroscopy of MC2 1635+119, a QSO hosted by a galaxy previously classified as an undisturbed elliptical. Our new images reveal dramatic shell structure indicative of a merger event in the relatively recent past. The brightest shells in the central regions of the host are distributed alternately in radius, with at least two distinct shells on one side of the nucleus and three on the other, out to a distance of ~13 kpc. The light within the five shells comprises ~6% of the total galaxy light. Lower surface brightness ripples or tails and other debris ext…
We use HST/ACS images and a photometric catalog of the COSMOS field to analyze morphologies of the host galaxies of approximately 400 AGN candidates at redshifts 0.3 < z < 1.0. We compare the AGN hosts with a sample of non-active galaxies drawn from the COSMOS field to match the magnitude and redshift distribution of the AGN hosts. We perform 2-D surface brightness modeling with GALFIT to yield host galaxy and nuclear point source magnitudes. X-ray selected AGN host galaxy morphologies span a substantial range that peaks between those of early-type, bulge-dominated and late-type, disk-dominate…
