A simple, reliable method for preparation of bulk Cr tips for Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) is proposed and its potentialities in performing high-quality and high-resolution STM and Spin Polarized-STM (SP-STM) are investigated. Cr tips show atomic resolution on ordered surfaces. Contrary to what happens with conventional W tips, rest atoms of the Si(111)-7x7 reconstruction can be routinely observed, probably due to a different electronic structure of the tip apex. SP-STM measurements of the Cr(001) surface showing magnetic contrast are reported. Our results reveal that the peculiar properties of these tips can be suited in a number of STM experimental situations.
We fabricated cantilevers for magnetic force microscopy with carbon nanotube tips coated with magnetic material. Images of a custom hard drive demonstrated 20 nm lateral resolution, with prospects for further improvements.
Hard point-contact spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy/spectroscopy are powerful techniques for investigating materials with strong expandability. To support these studies, tips with various physical and chemical properties are required. To ensure the reproducibility of experimental results, the fabrication of tips should be standardized, and a controllable and convenient system should be set up. Here a systematic methodology to fabricate various tips is proposed, involving electrochemical etching reactions. The reaction parameters fall into four categories: solution, power supply, imme…
A recent article by Falter et al. (Phys. Rev. B 87, 115412 (2013)) presents experimental results using field ion microscopy characterized tips in noncontact atomic force microscopy in order to characterize electrostatic and van der Waals long range forces. In the article, the tip radius was substantially underestimated at ~4.7 nm rather than ~8.1 nm due to subtleties in the application of the ring counting method. We point out where common errors in ring counting arise in order to benefit future experimental work in which the determination of tip radius by FIM is important.
The spin order of the nickel oxide (001) surface is resolved, employing non-contact atomic force microscopy at 4.4 K using bulk Fe- and SmCo-tips mounted on a qPlus sensor that oscillates at sub-50 pm amplitudes. The spin-dependent signal is hardly detectable with Fe-tips. In contrast, SmCo-tips yield a height contrast of 1.35 pm for Ni ions with opposite spins. SmCo tips even show a small height contrast on the O atoms of 0.5 pm within the 2x1 spin unit cell, pointing to the observation of superexchange. We attribute this to the increased magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy of SmCo, which st…
We present a near-field optical technique for second harmonic imaging using bare tapered optical fiber tip illuminated with femtosecond laser pulses. Enhancement of electric field at the tip of the fiber results in enhanced second harmonic generation (SHG) from the sample region near the tip. This SH emission is collected by the same tapered fiber. Spatial distribution of SHG from thin ferroelectric Pb(Zr_xTi_1-x)O_3 films and model metal-ferroelectric devices has been studied. Spatial resolution on the order of 80 nm has been achieved. This is the first time diffraction limit is surpassed in …
We fabricate and characterize carbon-fiber tips for their use in combined scanning tunneling and force microscopy based on piezoelectric quartz tuning fork force sensors. An electrochemical fabrication procedure to etch the tips is used to yield reproducible sub-100-nm apex. We also study electron transport through single-molecule junctions formed by a single octanethiol molecule bonded by the thiol anchoring group to a gold electrode and linked to a carbon tip by the methyl group. We observe the presence of conductance plateaus during the stretching of the molecular bridge, which is the signa…
We report a detailed three-step roadmap for the fabrication and characterization of bulk Cr tips for spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy. Our strategy uniquely circumvents the need for ultra-high vacuum preparation of clean surfaces or films. First, we demonstrate the role of $ex$-$situ$ electrochemical etch parameters on Cr tip apex geometry, using scanning electron micrographs of over 70 etched tips. Second, we describe the suitability of the $in$-$situ$ cleaved surface of the layered antiferromagnet La$_{1.4}$Sr$_{1.6}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ to evaluate the spin characteristics of the Cr tip,…
An in situ tip preparation procedure compatible with ultra-low temperature and high magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopes is presented. This procedure does not require additional preparation techniques such as thermal annealing or ion milling. It relies on the local electric-field-induced deposition of material from the tip onto the studied surface. Subsequently, repeated indentations are performed onto the sputtered cluster to mechanically anneal the tip apex and thus to ensure the stability of the tip. The efficiency of this method is confirmed by comparing the topography and spectro…
We present a method to realize active optical tips for use in near-field optics that can operate at room temperature. A metal-coated optical tip is covered with a thin polymer layer stained with CdSe nanocrystals or nanorods at low density. The time analysis of the emission rate and emission spectra of the active tips reveal that a very small number of particles - possibly down to only one - can be made active at the tip apex. This opens the way to near-field optics with a single inorganic nanoparticle as a light source.
We predict the occurrence of metastable skyrmionic spin structures such as antiskyrmions and higher-order skyrmions in ultra-thin transition-metal films at surfaces using Monte Carlo simulations based on a spin Hamiltonian parametrized from density functional theory calculations. We show that such spin structures will appear with a similar contrast in spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) images. Both skyrmions and antiskyrmions display a circular shape for out-of-plane magnetized tips and a two-lobe butterfly contrast for in-plane tips. An unambiguous distinction can be achiev…
The (001) surface of NiO, an antiferromagnet at room temperature, was investigated under ultra-high vacuum conditions with frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM). The antiferromagnetic coupling between ions leads to a spin superstructure on (001) surfaces. Exchange interaction between the probe of a force microscope and the NiO (001) surface should allow to image spin superstructures in real space. The surface was imaged with three different probing tips: nonmagnetic W tips, ferromagnetic Co tips and antiferromagnetic NiO tips - and atomic resolution was achieved with all three …
Noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) have become important tools for nanotechnology; however, their contrast mechanisms on the atomic scale are not entirely understood. Here we used chlorine vacancies in NaCl bilayers on Cu(111) as a model system to investigate atomic contrast as a function of applied voltage, tip height, and tip functionalization. We demonstrate that the AFM contrast on the atomic scale decisively depends on both the tip termination and the sample voltage. On the contrary, the local contact potential difference (LCPD) acquired w…
Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) operating in the frequency modulation mode with a metal tip functionalized with a CO molecule images the internal structure of molecules with an unprecedented resolution. The interpretation of these images is often difficult, making the support of theoretical simulations important. Current simulation methods, particularly the most accurate ones, require expertise and resources to perform ab initio calculations for the necessary inputs (i.e charge density and electrostatic potential of the molecule). Here, we propose an efficient and simple alternative to simulate …
We present a very efficient and accurate method to simulate scanning tunneling microscopy images and spectra from first-principles density functional calculations. The wave-functions of the tip and sample are calculated separately on the same footing, and propagated far from the surface using the vacuum Green's function. This allows to express the Bardeen matrix elements in terms of convolutions, and to obtain the tunneling current at all tip positions and bias voltages in a single calculation. The efficiency of the method opens the door to real time determination of both tip and surface compo…
Crystallographic image processing (CIP) techniques may be utilized in scanning probe microscopy (SPM) to glean information that has been obscured by signals from multiple probe tips. This may be of particular importance for scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and requires images from a sample that is periodic in two dimensions. The image-forming current for multiple tips in STM is derived in a more straightforward manner than prior approaches. The Fourier spectrum of the current for p4mm Bloch surface wave functions and a pair of delta function tips reveals the tip-separation dependence of var…
Single Co atoms, which exhibit a Kondo effect on Cu(111), are contacted with Cu and Fe tips in a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. With Fe tips, the Kondo effect persists with the Abrikosov-Suhl resonance significantly broadened. In contrast, for Cu-covered W tips, the resonance width remains almost constant throughout the tunneling and contact ranges. The distinct changes of the line width are interpreted in terms of modifications of the Co d state occupation owing to hybridization with the tip apex atoms.
Unwanted motion of the probe with respect to the sample is a ubiquitous problem in scanning probe microscopy, causing both linear and nonlinear artifacts in experimental images. We have designed a procedure to correct these artifacts by using orthogonal scan pairs to align each measurement line-by-line along the slow scan direction. We demonstrate the accuracy of our algorithm on both synthetic and experimental data and provide an implementation of our method.
The scanning mid-IR-laser microscopy was previously demonstrated as an effective tool for characterization of different semiconductor crystals. Now the technique has been successfully applied for the investigation of CZ Si$_x$Ge$_{1-x}$---a promising material for photovoltaics---and multicrystalline silicon for solar cells.
Cesium adsorption structures on Ag(111) were characterized in a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy experiment. At low coverages, atomic resolution of individual Cs atoms is occasionally suppressed in regions of an otherwise hexagonally ordered adsorbate film on terraces. Close to step edges Cs atoms appear as elongated protrusions along the step edge direction. At higher coverages, Cs superstructures with atomically resolved hexagonal lattices are observed. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations model the observed adsorbate structures on a qualitative level.
We present numerical simulations of scattering-type Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy (s-SNOM) of 1D plasmonic graphene junctions. A comprehensive analysis of simulated s-SNOM spectra is performed for three types of junctions. We find conditions when the conventional interpretation of the plasmon reflection coefficients from s-SNOM measurements does not apply. Our results are applicable to other conducting 2D materials and provide a comprehensive understanding of the s-SNOM techniques for probing local transport properties of 2D materials.
The graphene moire structures on metals, as they demonstrate both long (moire) and short (atomic) scale ordered structures, are the ideal systems for the application of scanning probe methods. Here we present the complex studies of the graphene/Ir(111) system by means of 3D scanning tunnelling and atomic force microscopy/spectroscopy as well as Kelvin-probe force microscopy. All results clearly demonstrate a variation of the moire and atomic scale contrasts as a function of the bias voltage as well as the distance between the scanning probe and the sample, allowing to discriminate between topo…
Recently, the family of high-resolution scanning probe imaging techniques using decorated tips has been complimented by a method based on inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS). The new technique resolves the inner structure of organic molecules by mapping the vibrational energy of a single carbonmonoxide (CO) molecule positioned at the apex of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) tip. Here, we explain high-resolution IETS imaging by extending the model developed earlier for STM and atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging with decorated tips. In particular, we show that the tip decor…
Using combined low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), we demonstrate hydrogen passivation of individual, selected dangling bonds (DBs) on a hydrogen-passivated Si(100)-2$\times$1 surface (H-Si) by atom manipulation. This method allows erasing of DBs and thus provides an error-correction scheme for hydrogen lithography. Si-terminated tips (Si tips) for hydrogen desorption and H-terminated tips (H tips) for hydrogen passivation are both created by deliberate contact to the H-Si surface and are assigned by their characteristic contrast in AFM. DB pa…
Atomically resolved images of monolayer organic crystals have only been obtained with scanning probe methods so far. On the one hand, they are usually prepared on surfaces of bulk materials, which are not accessible by (scanning) transmission electron microscopy. On the other hand, the critical electron dose of a monolayer organic crystal is orders of magnitudes lower than the one for bulk crystals, making (scanning) transmission electron microscopy characterization very challenging. In this work we present an atomically resolved study on the dynamics of a monolayer CuPcCl\textsubscript{16} cr…
Piezoresponse Force Microscopy is a powerful but delicate nanoscale technique that measures the mechanical response resulting from the application of a highly localized electric field. Though mechanical response is normally due to piezoelectricity, other physical phenomena, especially electrostatic interaction, can contribute to the signal read. We address this problematic through the use of longer ultra-stiff probes providing state of the art sensitivity, with the lowest electrostatic interaction and avoiding working in high frequency regime. In order to find this solution we develop a theore…
We describe the near-field microwave microscopy of microwave devices on a length scale much smaller than the wavelength used for imaging. Our microscope can be operated in two possible configurations, allowing a quantitative study of either material properties or local electric fields.
Influence of tip materials on the friction force microscopy of epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001): comparison of diamond and silicon tips in experiments and atomistic simulations
We have investigated the growth of antiferromagnetic Mn3N2(001) on MgO (001) by molecular beam epitaxy and scanning tunneling microscopy . The images show smooth terraces and atomic steps. On some of the terraces a unique and new reconstruction is seen, resolved as square Mn tetramers in a c(4x2) structural arrangement. Two domains of the tetramer reconstruction, rotated by 90$^\circ$ to each other, occur. A model is presented for this square Mn tetramer reconstruction, in which the Mn atoms of the tetramer layer belong to the Mn layer at the surface in the MnN-MnN-Mn stacking sequence.
The thermal properties of amorphous and crystalline phases in chalcogenide phase change materials (PCM) play a key role in device performance for non-volatile random-access memory. Here, we report the nanothermal morphology of amorphous and crystalline phases in laser pulsed GeTe and Ge2Sb2Te5 thin films by scanning thermal microscopy (SThM). By performing SThM measurements and applying quantitative physical models to two film thicknesses, the PCM thermal conductivities and thermal boundary conductances between the PCM and SThM probe are independently estimated for the amorphous and crystallin…
In this study, we have used a Zr-Nb alloy containing well-defined nano-precipitates as a model material in which to study imaging contrast inversions (atomic number or diffraction contrast) observed with the forescattered electron imaging system, ARGUSTM, in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) when imaging a thin foil in a transmission geometry. The study is based on Monte Carlo simulations and analysis of micrographs experimentally acquired under different imaging conditions. Based on the results, imaging conditions that enhance atomic number or diffraction contrast have been proposed. Data …
We use a near-field scanning microwave microscope to simultaneously image the dielectric constant, loss tangent, and topography in a PbTiO_3 crystal. By this method, we study the effects of the local dielectric constant and loss tangent in the geometry of periodic domains on the measured resonant frequency, and quality factor. We also carry out theoretical calculations and the results agree well with the experimental data and reveal the anisotropic nature of dielectric constant.
Scanning tunneling microscopy images of hydrogen-terminated Si(110) surfaces are studied using first-principles calculations. Our results show that the calculated filled-state images and local density of states are consistent with recent experimental results, and the empty-state images appear significantly different from the filled-state ones. To elucidate the origin of this difference, we examined in detail the local density of states, which affects the images, and found that the bonding and antibonding states of surface silicon atoms largely affect the difference between the filled- and empt…
We present a theory and a simulation of thermal diffuse scattering due to the excitation of magnons in scanning transmission electron microscopy. The calculations indicate that magnons can present atomic contrast when detected by electron energy-loss spectroscopy using atomic-size electron beams. The results presented here indicate that the intensity of the magnon diffuse scattering in bcc iron at 300~K is 4 orders of magnitude weaker than the intensity of thermal diffuse scattering arising from atomic vibrations. In an energy range where the phonon and magnon dispersions do not overlap, a mon…
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and diffraction (XPS, XPD) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) have been used for study of NbOx-structures on the Nb(110) surface. It is shown that niobium atoms are ordered to form a two-dimensional superstructure with equidistant spacing between the chains of niobium atoms. Chemical shifts of Nb3d- and O1s-levels demonstrate that the oxide layer corresponds to niobium monoxide NbO and the most part of oxygen in chemisorbed state is localized on the surface. A model of quasi-ordered structure of NbO on the Nb(110) surface is proposed.
Spatially resolved photocurrent measurements on carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNFETs) operated in various transport regimes are reported. It is demonstrated that the photocurrents measured at different biasing conditions provide access to the electronic band structure profile of the nanotube channel. A comparison of the profiles with the device switched into n- or p-type states clearly evidences the impact of chemical doping from the ambient. Moreover, we show that scanning photocurrent microscopy constitutes an effective and facile technique for the quantitative determination of t…
As a consequence of elasticity, mechanical deformations of crystals occur on a length scale comparable to their thickness. This is exemplified by applying a homogeneous electric field to a multi-domain ferroelectric crystal: as one domain is expanding the adjacent ones are contracting, leading to clamping at the domain boundaries. The piezomechanically driven surface corrugation of micron-sized domain patterns in thick crystals using large-area top electrodes is thus drastically suppressed, barely accessible by means of piezoresponse force microscopy.
Atoms transferred to W(111) and W(110) tip apices from the Au(111) surface during tunneling and approach to mechanical contact experiments in STM are characterized in FIM at room temperature and at 158 K. The different activation energies for diffusion on the (111) and (110) tip planes and the experiment temperature are shown to be important factors controlling the extent of changes to the atomic structure of the tip. W(111) tips are much better suited to scanning probe studies which require the characterization of an atomically defined tip and subsequent verification of its integrity in FIM. …
Sample thickness is an important parameter in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging, for interpreting image contrast and understanding the relationship between properties and microstructure. In this study, we introduce a method for determining thickness in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) mode based on scanning moiré fringe (SMF). Sample thickness can be determined in situ in the medium magnification using focal-series SMF imaging, with beam damage and contamination avoided to a large extent. This method provides a fast and convenient way for determining thickness in T…
Electronic conduction pathways in dielectric thin films are explored using automated experiments in scanning probe microscopy (SPM). Here, we use large field of view scanning to identify the position of localized conductive spots and develop a SPM workflow to probe their dynamic behavior at higher spatial resolution as a function of time, voltage, and scanning process in an automated fashion. Using this approach, we observe the variable behaviors of the conductive spots in a 20 nm thick ferroelectric Hf0.54Zr0.48O2 film, where conductive spots disappear and reappear during continuous scanning.…
Electronic transport in semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes is studied by combined scanning gate microscopy and scanning impedance microscopy (SIM). Depending on the probe potential, SIM can be performed in both invasive and non-invasive mode. High-resolution imaging of the defects is achieved when the probe acts as a local gate and simultaneously an electrostatic probe of local potential. A class of weak defects becomes observable even if they are located in the vicinity of strong defects. The imaging mechanism of tip-gating scanning impedance microscopy is discussed.
We have performed scanning capacitance microscopy using a relaxation oscillator. Precision calibrations indicate a sensitivity on the order of 0.05 pF. Surface topography of metallic structures, such as machined grooves and coins, can be readily obtained either in the constant-height (non-contact) or tapping (contact) mode. Spatial resolution of sub-50 $μ$m has been achieved.
Two-probe electronic transport measurements on a Molybdenum Disulphide (MoS_2) surface were performed at low temperature (30K) under ultra-high vacuum conditions. Two scanning tunneling microscope tips were precisely positioned in tunneling contact to measure the surface current-voltage characteristics. The separation between the tips is controllably varied and measured using a high resolution scanning electron microscope. The MoS_2 surface shows a surface electronic gap (E_S) of 1.4eV measured at a probe separation of 50nm. Furthermore, the two- probe resistance measured outside the electroni…
We show scanning probe microscopy measurements of metallic nanocontacts between controlled electromigration cycles. The nanowires used for the thinning process are fabricated by shadow evaporation. The highest resolution obtained using scanning force microscopy is about 3 nm. During the first few electromigration cycles the overall slit structure of the nanocontact is formed. The slit first passes along grain boundaries and then at a later stage vertically splits grains in the course of consuming them. We find that first the whole wire is heated and later during the thinning process as the sli…
The work describes the capabilities of Laser Scanning Microscopy (LSM) as a spatially resolved method of testing high_Tc materials and devices. The earlier results obtained by the authors are briefly reviewed. Some novel applications of the LSM are illustrated, including imaging the HTS responses in rf mode, probing the superconducting properties of HTS single crystals, development of twobeam laser scanning microscopy. The existence of the phase slip lines mechanism of resistivity in HTS materials is proven by LSM imaging.
Image simulation for scanning transmission electron microscopy at atomic resolution for samples with realistic dimensions can require very large computation times using existing simulation algorithms. We present a new algorithm named PRISM that combines features of the two most commonly used algorithms, the Bloch wave and multislice methods. PRISM uses a Fourier interpolation factor $f$ that has typical values of 4-20 for atomic resolution simulations. We show that in many cases PRISM can provide a speedup that scales with $f^4$ compared to multislice simulations, with a negligible loss of acc…
We investigate bright fluorescence of nitrogen (NV)- and silicon-vacancy color centers in pyramidal, single crystal diamond tips which are commercially available as atomic force microscope probes. We coherently manipulate NV electronic spin ensembles with $T_2 = 7.7(3)\,μ$s. Color center lifetimes in different tip heights indicate effective refractive index effects and quenching. Using numerical simulations, we verify enhanced photon rates from emitters close to the pyramid apex; a situation promising for scanning probe sensing.
The Near-Field Scanning Microwave Microscope (NSMM) can quantitatively image materials properties at length scales far shorter than the free space wavelength (λ). Here we report a study of the effect of tip-geometry on the NSMM signals. This particular NSMM utilizes scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) for distance-following control. We systematically examined many commercially available STM tips, and find them to have a conical structure on the macroscopic scale, with an embedded sphere (of radius rsphere) at the apex of the tip. The rsphere values used in the study ranged from 0.1 μm to 12.6 …
We report on transient adhesion and conductance phenomena associated with tip wetting in mechanical contacts produced by the indentation of a clean W(111) tip into a Au(111) surface. A combination of atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy was used to carry out indentation and to image residual impressions in ultra-high vacuum. The ~7 nm radii tips used in these experiments were prepared and characterized by field ion microscopy in the same instrument. The very first indentations of the tungsten tips show larger conductance and pull-off adhesive forces than subsequent indenta…
The scanning mid-IR-laser microscopy was previously demonstrated as an effective tool for characterization of different semiconductor crystals. Now the technique has been successfully applied for the investigation of CZ SixGe1-x -- a promising material for photovoltaics - and multicrystalline silicon for solar cells. In addition, this technique was shown to be appropriate for imaging of polishing-induced defects as well as such huge defects as "pin holes". Besides, previously unexplained "anomalous" (cubic power) dependence of signal of the scanning mid-IR-laser microscope in the optical-beam-…
Here a new microscopic method is proposed to image and characterize very thin samples like few-layer materials, organic molecules, and nanostructures with nanometer or sub-nanometer resolution using electron beams of energies lower than 20 eV. The microscopic technique achieves high resolution through the proximity (or near-field) effect, as in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), while it also allows detection of transmitted electrons for imaging and spectroscopy, as in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). This proximity transmission electron microscopy (PSTEM) does not require a…
Epitaxial graphene grown on transition metal surfaces typically exhibits a moiré pattern due to the lattice mismatch between graphene and the underlying metal surface. We use both scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments to probe the electronic and topographic contrast of the graphene moiré on the Ir(111) surface. While STM topography is influenced by the local density of states close to the Fermi energy and the local tunneling barrier height, AFM is capable of yielding the 'true' surface topography once the background force arising from the van der Waa…
A carbon nanotube (CNT) tip was fabricated at the apex of an etched tungsten wire by chemical vapor deposition and used for scanning tunneling microscopy. The honeycomb lattice of graphite in the STM images was resolved with a CNT tip at T=79 K. The superior spatial resolution originating from the p orbitals of a CNT is responsible for the image of the honeycomb lattice of graphite in the STM images. The CNT tips are useful to image samples whose lattice constants are small and to get orbital information in samples with orbital ordering due to their superior spatial resolution with the sharp p…
It is generally thought that capillary interactions in nanoscale contacts give rise to unwanted behaviour due to high adhesion. We show that this is not the case for sufficiently small contacts in ambient conditions. High resolution ambient atomic force microscopy AFM requires tip-sharpness, proximity and small forces, but the cantilever dynamics might not allow these three conditions to be met simultaneously. Hitherto, accepted dogma is that small drive amplitudes lead to either tip trapping or L mode (attractive) imaging, where proximity is inhibited. Here we show that the hydration layer mi…
Nanoscale 3D surface modifications, by scanning tunneling microscopy under ambient conditions, of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films have been performed. It was demonstrated that there are well defined combinations of bias voltages and scan speeds which allow for controlled surface structuring. Lateral structures with sizes down to 1.5 nm are possible to obtain. Moreover, it is possible to reproducibly control the depth of etching with half a unit cell precision, enabling design of 3D surface structures and control of the surface termination of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 through etching.
We have developed a method for depositing graphene monolayers and bilayers with minimum lateral dimensions of 2-10 nm by the mechanical exfoliation of graphite onto the Si(100)-2x1:H surface. Room temperature, ultra-high vacuum (UHV) tunnelling spectroscopy measurements of nanometer-sized single-layer graphene reveal a size dependent energy gap ranging from 0.1-1 eV. Furthermore, the number of graphene layers can be directly determined from scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) topographic contours. This atomistic study provides an experimental basis for probing the electronic structure of nano…

Complex oxide interfaces have been one of the central focuses in condensed matter physics and material science. Over the past decade, aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy has proven to be invaluable to visualize and understand the emerging quantum phenomena at an interface. In this paper, we briefly review some recent progress in the utilization of electron microscopy to probe interfaces. Specifically, we discuss several important challenges for electron microscopy to advance our understanding on interface phenomena, from the perspective of variable t…
Using low energy electron diffraction (LEED), scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques, we have studied the first steps of silicon adsorption onto Cu (001) single crystal substrate. For low coverage (~ 0.5 ML) and after annealing at 100°C, STM images and LEED patterns reveal the formation of an ordered quasi commensurate superstructure. From a quantitative analysis of XAS data, we extract the Si-Cu distance and detail the local atomic arrangement of the structure.
