We study the problem of maximum likelihood estimation for general patterns of bivariate missing data for normal and multinomial random variables, under the assumption that the data is missing at random (MAR). For normal data, the score equations have nine complex solutions, at least one of which is real and statistically significant. Our computations suggest that the number of real solutions is related to whether or not the MAR assumption is satisfied. In the multinomial case, all solutions to the score equations are real and the number of real solutions grows exponentially in the number of states of the underlying random variables, though there is always precisely one statistically significant local maxima.
We consider maximum likelihood estimation with data from a bivariate Gaussian process with a separable exponential covariance model under fixed domain asymptotic. We first characterize the equivalence of Gaussian measures under this model. Then consistency and asymptotic distribution for the microergodic parameters are established. A simulation study is presented in order to compare the finite sample behavior of the maximum likelihood estimator with the given asymptotic distribution.
In this paper, we propose a new class of bivariate distributions, called the bivariate discrete inverse Weibull (BDsIW) distribution, whose marginals are discrete inverse Weibull (DsIW) distributions. Some statistical and mathematical properties are presented. The maximum likelihood method is used for estimating the model parameters. Simulations are presented to verify the performance of the direct maximum likelihood estimation. Finally, two real data sets are analyzed for illustrative purposes.
This paper proposes a bivariate marginal likelihood specification of spatial econometrics models that simplifies the derivation of the log-likelihood and leads to a closed form expression for the estimation of the parameters. With respect to the more traditional specifications of spatial autoregressive models, our method avoids the arbitrariness of the specification of a weight matrix, presents analytical and computational advantages and provides interesting interpretative insights. We establish small sample and asymptotic properties of the estimators and we derive the associated Fisher inform…
In this paper, we use the method of modified signed log-likelihood ratio test for the problem of testing the equality of correlation coefficients in two independent bivariate normal distributions. We compare this method with two other %competing approaches, Fisher's Z-transform and generalized test variable, using a Monte Carlo simulation. It indicates that the proposed method is better than the other approaches, in terms of the actual sizes and powers especially when the sample sizes are unequal. We illustrate performance of the proposed approach, using a real data set.
This paper studies circular correlations for the bivariate von Mises sine and cosine distributions. These are two simple and appealing models for bivariate angular data with five parameters each that have interpretations comparable to those in the ordinary bivariate normal model. However, the variability and association of the angle pairs cannot be easily deduced from the model parameters unlike the bivariate normal. Thus to compute such summary measures, tools from circular statistics are needed. We derive analytic expressions and study the properties of the Jammalamadaka-Sarma and Fisher-Lee…
The analysis of the joint cumulative distribution function (CDF) with bivariate event time data is a challenging problem both theoretically and numerically. This paper develops a tensor spline-based sieve maximum likelihood estimation method to estimate the joint CDF with bivariate current status data. The I-splines are used to approximate the joint CDF in order to simplify the numerical computation of a constrained maximum likelihood estimation problem. The generalized gradient projection algorithm is used to compute the constrained optimization problem. Based on the properties of B-spline ba…
In this work, we derive some novel properties of the bimodal normal distribution. Some of its mathematical properties are examined. We provide a formal proof for the bimodality and assess identifiability. We then discuss the maximum likelihood estimates as well as the existence of these estimates, and also some asymptotic properties of the estimator of the parameter that controls the bimodality. A bivariate version of the BN distribution is derived and some characteristics such as covariance and correlation are analyzed. We study stationarity and ergodicity and a triangular array central limit…
In this paper, we introduce a bivariate exponentaited generalized Weibull-Gompertz distribution. The model introduced here is of Marshall-Olkin type. Several properties are studied such as bivariate probability density function and it is marginal, moments, maximum likelihood estimation, joint reversed (hazard) function and joint mean waiting time and it is marginal. A real data set is analyzed and it is observed that the present distribution can provide a better fit than some other very well-known distributions.
In this paper, we introduce a new bivariate distribution we called it bivariate expo- nentiated modified Weibull extension distribution (BEMWE). The model introduced here is of Marshall-Olkin type. The marginals of the new bivariate distribution have exponentiated modified Weibull extension distribution which proposed by Sarhan et al.(2013). The joint probability density function and the joint cumulative distribu- tion function are in closed forms. Several properties of this distribution have been discussed. The maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters are derived. One real data set are …
Nonparametric Density Estimation for Data Scattered on Irregular Spatial Domains: A Likelihood-Based Approach Using Bivariate Penalized Spline Smoothing
Birnbaum-Saunders models have been widely used to model positively skewed data. In this paper, we introduce a bivariate Birnbaum-Saunders distribution which has the means as parameters. We present some properties of the univariate and bivariate Birnbaum-Saunders models. We discuss the maximum likelihood and modified moment estimation of the model parameters and associated inference. A simulation study is conducted to evaluate the performance of the maximum likelihood and modified moment estimators. The probability coverages of confidence intervals are also discussed. Finally, a real-world data…
Missing observations are common in cluster randomised trials. Approaches taken to handling such missing data include: complete case analysis, single-level multiple imputation that ignores the clustering, multiple imputation with a fixed effect for each cluster and multilevel multiple imputation. We conducted a simulation study to assess the performance of these approaches, in terms of confidence interval coverage and empirical bias in the estimated treatment effects. Missing-at-random clustered data scenarios were simulated following a full-factorial design. An Analysis of Variance was carried…
We consider an empirical likelihood inference for parameters defined by general estimating equations when some components of the random observations are subject to missingness. As the nature of the estimating equations is wide-ranging, we propose a nonparametric imputation of the missing values from a kernel estimator of the conditional distribution of the missing variable given the always observable variable. The empirical likelihood is used to construct a profile likelihood for the parameter of interest. We demonstrate that the proposed nonparametric imputation can remove the selection bias …
For the univariate current status and, more generally, the interval censoring model, distribution theory has been developed for the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and smoothed maximum likelihood estimator (SMLE) of the unknown distribution function, see, e.g., [12], [7], [4], [5], [6], [10], [11] and [8]. For the bivariate current status and interval censoring models distribution theory of this type is still absent and even the rate at which we can expect reasonable estimators to converge is unknown. We define a purely discrete plug-in estimator of the distribution function which locally c…
This paper deals with the estimation of reliability $R=P(Y<X)$ when $X$ is a random strength of a component subjected to a random stress $Y$ and $(X,Y)$ follows a bivariate Rayleigh distribution. The maximum likelihood estimator of $R$ and its asymptotic distribution are obtained. An asymptotic confidence interval of $R$ is constructed using the asymptotic distribution. Also, two confidence intervals are proposed based on Bootstrap method and a computational approach. Testing of the reliability based on asymptotic distribution of $R$ is discussed. Simulation study to investigate performance of…
Extreme-value copulas arise as the limiting dependence structure of component-wise maxima. Defined in terms of a functional parameter, they are one of the most widespread copula families due to their flexibility and ability to capture asymmetry. Despite this, meeting the complex analytical properties of this parameter in an unconstrained setting remains a challenge, restricting most uses to models with very few parameters or nonparametric models. Focusing on the bivariate case, we propose a novel semiparametric approach. Our procedure relies on a series of transformations, including Williamson…
Bivariate ordered logistic models (BOLMs) are appealing to jointly model the marginal distribution of two ordered responses and their association, given a set of covariates. When the number of categories of the responses increases, the number of global odds ratios (or their re-parametrizations) to be estimated also increases and estimating the association structure becomes crucial for this type of data. In fact, such data could be too "rich" to be fully modelled with an ordinary BOLM while, sometimes, the well-known Dale's model could be too parsimonious to provide a good fit. In addition, whe…
In this paper, we introduce a new class of bivariate distributions called the bivariate exponentiated extended Weibull distributions. The model introduced here is of Marshall-Olkin type. This new class of bivariate distributions contains several bivariate lifetime models. Some mathematical properties of the new class of distributions are studied. We provide the joint and conditional density functions, the joint cumulative distribution function and the joint survival function. Special bivariate distributions are investigated in some detail. The maximum likelihood estimators are obtained using t…
We introduce the bivariate unit-log-symmetric model based on the bivariate log-symmetric distribution (BLS) defined in [Vila et al., 2022, Bivariate Log-symmetric Models: Theoretical Properties and Parameter Estimation. Avaliable at arXiv:2211.13839] as a flexible family of bivariate distributions over the unit square. We then study its mathematical properties such as stochastic representations, quantiles, conditional distributions, independence of the marginal distributions and moments. Maximum likelihood estimation method is discussed and examined through Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, the…
In this article we introduce a three-parameter extension of the bivariate exponential-geometric (BEG) law (Kozubowski and Panorska, 2005). We refer to this new distribution as bivariate gamma-geometric (BGG) law. A bivariate random vector $(X,N)$ follows BGG law if $N$ has geometric distribution and $X$ may be represented (in law) as a sum of $N$ independent and identically distributed gamma variables, where these variables are independent of $N$. Statistical properties such as moment generation and characteristic functions, moments and variance-covariance matrix are provided. The marginal and…
Estimating the matrix of connections probabilities is one of the key questions when studying sparse networks. In this work, we consider networks generated under the sparse graphon model and the in-homogeneous random graph model with missing observations. Using the Stochastic Block Model as a parametric proxy, we bound the risk of the maximum likelihood estimator of network connections probabilities , and show that it is minimax optimal. When risk is measured in Frobenius norm, no estimator running in polynomial time has been shown to attain the minimax optimal rate of convergence for this prob…
In this paper, we consider the situation under a life test, in which the failure time of the test units are not related deterministically to an observable stochastic time varying covariate. In such a case, the joint distribution of failure time and a marker value would be useful for modeling the step stress life test. The problem of accelerating such an experiment is considered as the main aim of this paper. We present a step stress accelerated model based on a bivariate Wiener process with one component as the latent (unobservable) degradation process, which determines the failure times and t…
The bivariate Gaussian distribution has been a key model for many developments in statistics. However, many real-world phenomena generate data that follow asymmetric distributions, and consequently bivariate normal model is inappropriate in such situations. Bidimensional log-symmetric models have attractive properties and can be considered as good alternatives in these cases. In this paper, we discuss bivariate log-symmetric distributions and their characterizations. We establish several distributional properties and obtain the maximum likelihood estimators of the model parameters. A Monte Car…
In this article, a general family of bivariate distributions is used to model competing risks data with dependent factors. The general structure of competing risks data considered here includes ties. A comprehensive inferential framework for the proposed model is presented: maximum likelihood estimation, confidence interval construction, and model selection within the bivariate family of distributions for a given dependent competing risks data. The inferential methods are very convenient to implement. Through detailed simulations, the inferential methods are observed to provide quite reasonabl…
Recently, Serfling and Xiao (2007) extended the L-moment theory (Hosking, 1990) to the multivariate setting. In the present paper, we focus on the two-dimension random vectors to establish a link between the bivariate L-moments (BLM) and the underlying bivariate copula functions. This connection provides a new estimate of dependence parameters of bivariate statistical data. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimator are established. Extensive simulation study is carried out to compare estimators based on the BLM, the maximum likelihood, the minimum distance and rank approxi…
Seemingly unrelated regressions are statistical regression models based on the Gaussian distribution. They are popular in econometrics but also arise in graphical modeling of multivariate dependencies. In maximum likelihood estimation, the parameters of the model are estimated by maximizing the likelihood function, which maps the parameters to the likelihood of observing the given data. By transforming this optimization problem into a polynomial optimization problem, it was recently shown that the likelihood function of a simple bivariate seemingly unrelated regressions model may have several …
In this paper we develop a bivariate discrete generalized exponential distribution, whose marginals are discrete generalized exponential distribution as proposed by Nekoukhou, Alamatsaz and Bidram ("Discrete generalized exponential distribution of a second type", Statistics, 47, 876 - 887, 2013). It is observed that the proposed bivariate distribution is a very flexible distribution and the bivariate geometric distribution can be obtained as a special case of this distribution. The proposed distribution can be seen as a natural discrete analogue of the bivariate generalized exponential distrib…
This research is motivated by discovering and underpinning genetic causes for the progression of a bilateral eye disease, Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), of which the primary outcomes, progression times to late-AMD, are bivariate and interval-censored due to intermittent assessment times. We propose a novel class of copula-based semiparametric transformation models for bivariate data under general interval censoring, which includes the case 1 interval censoring (current status data) and case 2 interval censoring. Specifically, the joint likelihood is modeled through a two-parameter Arc…
Motivated by applications to goodness of fit testing, the empirical likelihood approach is generalized to allow for the number of constraints to grow with the sample size and for the constraints to use estimated criteria functions. The latter is needed to deal with nuisance parameters. The proposed empirical likelihood based goodness of fit tests are asymptotically distribution free. For univariate observations, tests for a specified distribution, for a distribution of parametric form, and for a symmetric distribution are presented. For bivariate observations, tests for independence are develo…
A variety of estimators for the parameters of the Generalized Pareto distribution, the approximating distribution for excesses over a high threshold, have been proposed, always assuming the underlying data to be independent. We recently proved that the likelihood moment estimators are consistent estimators for the parameters of the Generalized Pareto distribution for the case where the underlying data arises from a (stationary) linear process with heavy-tailed innovations. In this paper we derive the bivariate asymptotic normality under some additional assumptions and give an explicit example …
In this paper, we propose an empirical likelihood-based weighted estimator of regression parameter in quantile regression model with nonignorable missing covariates. The proposed estimator is computationally simple and achieves semiparametric efficiency if the probability of missingness on the fully observed variables is correctly specified. The efficiency gain of the proposed estimator over the complete-case-analysis estimator is quantified theoretically and illustrated via simulation and a real data application.
This paper presents applications of the peaks-over threshold methodology for both the univariate and the recently introduced bivariate case, combined with a novel bootstrap approach. We compare the proposed bootstrap methods to the more traditional profile likelihood. We have investigated 63 years of the European Climate Assessment daily precipitation data for five Hungarian grid points, first separately for the summer and winter months, then aiming at the detection of possible changes by investigating 20 years moving windows. We show that significant changes can be observed both in the univar…
This paper deals with a parametrized family of partially observed bivariate Markov chains. We establish that, under very mild assumptions, the limit of the normalized log-likelihood function is maximized when the parameters belong to the equivalence class of the true parameter, which is a key feature for obtaining the consistency of the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) in well-specified models. This result is obtained in the general framework of partially dominated models. We examine two specific cases of interest, namely, hidden Markov models (HMMs) and observation-driven time series mode…
We consider the problem of full information maximum likelihood (FIML) estimation in a factor analysis model when a majority of the data values are missing. The expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is often used to find the FIML estimates, in which the missing values on observed variables are included in complete data. However, the EM algorithm has an extremely high computational cost when the number of observations is large and/or plenty of missing values are involved. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm that is based on the EM algorithm but that efficiently computes the FIML estimate…
We propose an inferential approach for maximum likelihood estimation of the hidden Markov models for continuous responses. We extend to the case of longitudinal observations the finite mixture model of multivariate Gaussian distributions with Missing At Random (MAR) outcomes, also accounting for possible dropout. The resulting hidden Markov model accounts for different types of missing pattern: (i) partially missing outcomes at a given time occasion; (ii) completely missing outcomes at a given time occasion (intermittent pattern); (iii) dropout before the end of the period of observation (mono…
In medical studies, it is common the presence of a fraction of patients who do not experience the event of interest. These patients are people who are not at risk of the event or are patients who were cured during the research. The proportion of immune or cured patients is known in the literature as cure rate. In general, the traditional existing lifetime statistical models are not appropriate to model data sets with cure rate, including bivariate lifetimes. In this paper, it is proposed a bivariate model based on a defective Gompertz distribution and also using a Clayton copula function to ca…
Maximum composite likelihood estimation is a useful alternative to maximum likelihood estimation when data arise from data generating processes (DGPs) that do not admit tractable joint specification. We demonstrate that generic composite likelihoods consisting of marginal and conditional specifications permit the simple construction of composite likelihood ratio-like statistics from which finite-sample valid confidence sets and hypothesis tests can be constructed. These statistics are universal in the sense that they can be constructed from any estimator for the parameter of the underlying DGP…
When are inferences (whether Direct-Likelihood, Bayesian, or Frequentist) obtained from partial data valid? This paper answers this question by offering a new asymptotic theory about inference with missing data that is more general than existing theories. It proves that as the sample size increases and the extent of missingness decreases, the average-loglikelihood function generated by partial data and that ignores the missingness mechanism will converge in probability to that which would have been generated by complete data; and if the data are Missing at Random, this convergence depends only…
We propose a novel flexible bivariate conditional Poisson (BCP) INteger-valued Generalized AutoRegressive Conditional Heteroscedastic (INGARCH) model for correlated count time series data. Our proposed BCP-INGARCH model is mathematically tractable and has as the main advantage over existing bivariate INGARCH models its ability to capture a broad range (both negative and positive) of contemporaneous cross-correlation which is a non-trivial advancement. Properties of stationarity and ergodicity for the BCP-INGARCH process are developed. Estimation of the parameters is performed through condition…
In reliability and life data analysis, the Weibull distribution is widely used to accommodate more data characteristics by changing the values of the parameters. We frequently observe many zeros or close to zero data points in reliability and life testing experiments. We call this phenomenon a nearly instantaneous failure. Many researchers modified the commonly used univariate parametric models such as exponential, gamma, Weibull, and log-normal distributions to appropriately fit such data having instantaneous failure observations. Researchers also find bivariate correlated life testing data h…
This paper develops a general theory on rates of convergence of penalized spline estimators for function estimation when the likelihood functional is concave in candidate functions, where the likelihood is interpreted in a broad sense that includes conditional likelihood, quasi-likelihood, and pseudo-likelihood. The theory allows all feasible combinations of the spline degree, the penalty order, and the smoothness of the unknown functions. According to this theory, the asymptotic behaviors of the penalized spline estimators depends on interplay between the spline knot number and the penalty pa…
In this paper we develop a very general class of bivariate discrete distributions. The basic idea is very simple. The marginals are obtained by taking the random geometric sum of a baseline distribution function. The proposed class of distributions is a very flexible class of distributions in the sense the marginals can take variety of shapes. It can be multimodal as well as heavy tailed also. It can be both over dispersed as well as under dispersed. Moreover, the correlation can be of a wide range. We discuss different properties of the proposes class of bivariate distributions. The proposed …
