Using various relativistic mean-field models, including the nonlinear ones with meson field self-interactions, those with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings, and the point-coupling models without meson fields, we have studied the isospin-dependent bulk and single-particle properties of asymmetric nuclear matter. In particular, we have determined the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy from these different relativistic mean-field models and compare the results with the constraints recently extracted from analyses of experimental data on isospin diffusion and isotopic scaling in intermediate-energy heavy ion collisions as well as from measured isotopic dependence of the giant monopole resonances in even-A Sn isotopes. Among the 23 parameter sets in the relativistic mean-filed model that are commonly used for nuclear structure studies, only a few are found to give symmetry energies that are consistent with the empirical constraints. We have also studied the nuclear symmetry potential and the isospin-splitting of the nucleon effective mass in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. We find that both the momentum dependence of the nuclear symmetry potential at fixed baryon density and the isospin-splitting of the nucleon effective mass in neutron-rich nuclear matter depend not only on the nuclear interactions but also on the definition of the nucleon optical potential.
We study the implications of isospin symmetry in nuclear systems on two-body distributions and derive relations between different densities or momentum distributions of a given nucleus or of different nuclei in the same isospin multiplet. A connection between neutrinoless double beta decay transition of mirror nuclei and two-body densities is also obtained. The relations are numerically verified by means of quantum Monte Carlo calculations. We discuss the relevance of these results to the analysis of nuclear short-range correlations and also show that isospin symmetry allows us to extract info…
Nuclear thermodynamics studies evidenced the existence of a first order phase transition, namely of the liquid-gas type, without paying attention to the isospin degree of freedom. On the other hand, only few results with the introduction of the isospin variable have been so far obtained. Moreover above all a key question remains. It concerns the origin of the dynamics of the phase transition: spinodal instabilities or not with possible consequences and new signatures related to the introduction of the isospin variable.
The effects of nuclear isospin asymmetry on $α$ decay lifetimes of heavy nuclei are investigated within various phenomenological models of nuclear potential for the $α$ particle. We consider the widely used simple square well potential and Woods-Saxon potential, and modify them by including an isospin asymmetry term. We then suggest a model for the potential of the $α$ particle motivated by a microscopic phenomenological approach of the Skyrme force model, which naturally introduce the isospin dependent form of the nuclear potential for the $α$ particle. The empirical $α$ decay lifetime formul…
The density and temperature dependence of the nuclear symmetry free energy is investigated using microscopic two- and three-body nuclear potentials constructed from chiral effective field theory. The nuclear force models and many-body methods are benchmarked to properties of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter in the vicinity of the saturation density as well as the virial expansion of the neutron matter equation of state at low fugacities. The free energy per particle of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter is calculated assuming a quadratic dependence of the interaction contributions on the isospi…
Spin and isospin are essential degrees of freedom in nuclear systems, and the relevant studies on their properties play important roles not only in nuclear physics but also in nuclear astrophysics, particle physics, and so on. In this presentation for the IUPAP Young Scientist Prize 2016, I would like to introduce the microscopic studies on nuclear spin-isospin properties in the framework of covariant density functional theory (DFT), by taking a few works that I have been joining in as examples. It is seen that the covariant scheme plays an important role in describing the spin properties in a…
In this paper, the in-medium $NN\rightarrow NΔ$ cross section is calculated in the framework of the one-boson exchange model by including the isovector mesons, i.e. $δ$ and $ρ$ mesons. Due to the isospin exchange in the $NN\rightarrow NΔ$ process, the vector self-energies of the outgoing particles are modified relative to the incoming particles in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter, and it leads to the effective energies of the incoming $NN$ pair being different from the outgoing $NΔ$ pair. This effect is investigated in the calculation of the in-medium $NN\rightarrow NΔ$ cross section. With th…
We analyze and propose a solution to the apparent inconsistency between our current knowledge of the Equation of State of asymmetric nuclear matter, the energy of the Isobaric Analog State (IAS) in a heavy nucleus such as 208Pb, and the isospin symmetry breaking forces in the nuclear medium. This is achieved by performing state-of-the-art Hartree-Fock plus Random Phase Approximation calculations of the IAS that include all isospin symmetry breaking contributions. To this aim, we propose a new effective interaction that is successful in reproducing the IAS excitation energy without compromising…
We compute the density dependence of the quark condensate and how it changes under the influence of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter. This is achieved by the calculation of the relevant Feynman diagrams using in-medium chiral perturbation theory. We find that the absolute value of the quark condensate decreases in nuclear matter by around 35% at normal nuclear density, in agreement with previous model-independent calculations. We also present an quantitative estimation of the difference of up- and down quark in-medium condensates.
Medium modification of the magnetic moments of octet baryons in the isospin asymmetric nuclear medium at finite temperature has been calculated using medium modified quark and baryon masses derived in chiral SU(3) quark mean field model. The magnetic moments of baryons are found to vary significantly as a function of density of nuclear medium as well as with the increase in isospin asymmetry of the medium. The rise of temperature is found to decrease the effect of isospin asymmetry on masses and magnetic moments of baryons. The results of present investigation may be helpful to understand the …
The coexistence of neutron-neutron (n-n), proton-proton (p-p), and neutron-proton (n-p) pairings is investigated by adopting an effective density-dependent contact pairing potential. These three types of pairings can coexist only if the n-p pairing is stronger than the n-n and p-p pairings for isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. In addition, the existence of n-n and p-p pairs might enhance n-p pairings in asymmetric nuclear matter when the n-p pairing strength is significantly stronger than the n-n and p-p ones. Conversely, the n-p pairing is reduced by the n-n and p-p pairs when the n-p pairin…
