Bardina and Jolis [Stochastic process. Appl. 69 (1997) 83--109] prove an extension of Itô's formula for $F(X_t,t)$, where $F(x,t)$ has a locally square-integrable derivative in $x$ that satisfies a mild continuity condition in $t$ and $X$ is a one-dimensional diffusion process such that the law of $X_t$ has a density satisfying certain properties. This formula was expressed using quadratic covariation. Following the ideas of Eisenbaum [Potential Anal. 13 (2000) 303--328] concerning Brownian motion, we show that one can re-express this formula using integration over space and time with respect to local times in place of quadratic covariation. We also show that when the function $F$ has a locally integrable derivative in $t$, we can avoid the mild continuity condition in $t$ for the derivative of $F$ in $x$.
We study semi-linear elliptic PDEs with polynomial non-linearity and provide a probabilistic representation of their solution using branching diffusion processes. When the non-linearity involves the unknown function but not its derivatives, we extend previous results in the literature by showing that our probabilistic representation provides a solution to the PDE without assuming its existence. In the general case, we derive a new representation of the solution by using marked branching diffusion processes and automatic differentiation formulas to account for the non-linear gradient term. In b…
For given strongly local Dirichlet forms with possibly degenerate symmetric (sub)-elliptic matrix, we show the existence of weak solutions to the stochastic differential equations (associated with the Dirichlet forms) starting from all points in $\R^d$. More precisely, using heat kernel estimates, stochastic calculus, and Dirichlet form theory, we obtain the pointwise existence of weak solutions to the stochastic differential equations which have possibly unbounded and discontinuous drift. We also present some conditions that the weak solutions become pathwise unique strong solutions and provi…
In this article, we obtain a functional CLT for a class of degenerate diffusion processes with periodic coefficients, thus generalizing the already classical results in the context of uniformly elliptic diffusions. As an application, we also discuss periodic homogenization of a class of linear degenerate elliptic and parabolic PDEs.
We present two variational formulae for the capacity in the context of non-selfadjoint elliptic operators. The minimizers of these variational problems are expressed as solutions of boundary-value elliptic equations. We use these principles to provide a sharp estimate for the transition times between two different wells for non-reversible diffusion processes. This estimate permits to describe the metastable behavior of the system.
Convolutional layers within graph neural networks operate by aggregating information about local neighbourhood structures; one common way to encode such substructures is through random walks. The distribution of these random walks evolves according to a diffusion equation defined using the graph Laplacian. We extend this approach by leveraging classic mathematical results about hypo-elliptic diffusions. This results in a novel tensor-valued graph operator, which we call the hypo-elliptic graph Laplacian. We provide theoretical guarantees and efficient low-rank approximation algorithms. In part…
For n-dimensional ergodic diffusion processes with values in $G=\mathbb{R}_{+}^n$ we prove time-independent upper bounds for the transitional density and so also for the unique ergodic density. We do not require geodesic completeness of the elliptic symbol towards the boundary of $G$.
In this work, we analyse the metastability of non-reversible diffusion processes $$dX_t=\boldsymbol{b}(X_t)dt+\sqrt h\,dB_t$$ on a bounded domain $Ω$ when $\mathbf{b}$ admits the decomposition $\mathbf{b}=-(\nabla f+\mathbf{\ell})$ and $\nabla f \cdot \mathbf{\ell}=0$. In this setting, we first show that, when $h\to 0$, the principal eigenvalue of the generator of $(X_t)_{t\ge 0}$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary $\partialΩ$ of $Ω$ is exponentially close to the inverse of the mean exit time from $Ω$, uniformly in the initial conditions $X_0=x$ within the compacts of $Ω$. The …
