The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S (S>1/2) Ising model on a rope ladder is examined by combining two exact analytical methods. By the decoration-iteration mapping transformation, this mixed-spin system is firstly transformed to a simple spin-1/2 Ising model on the two-leg ladder, which is then exactly solved by the standard transfer-matrix method. The thermal variations of the zero-field specific heat are discussed in particular.
Coarsening and persistence of Ising spins on a ladder is examined under voter dynamics. The density of domain walls decreases algebraically with time as $t^-{1/2}$ for sequential as well as parallel dynamics. The persistence probability decreases as $t^{-θ_{s}}$ under sequential dynamics, and as $t^{-θ_{p}}$ under parallel dynamics where $θ_{p} = 2 θ_{s} \approx .88$. Numerical values of the exponents are explained. The results are compared with the voter model on one and two dimensional lattices, as well as Ising model on a ladder under zero-temperature Glauber dynamics.
We derive the exact ground-state energy of the one-dimensional Ising model in random fields taking values h, 0 and -h with general probabilities. The random-field Ising model on a ladder is also analyzed by showing its equivalence to the random-field Ising chain with field values h, -h and 0 for h<J. The zero-temperature transger matrix is used to obtain the results.
The quantum spin-1/2 two-leg ladder with an anisotropic XYZ Heisenberg intra-rung interaction and Ising inter-rung interactions is treated by means of a rigorous approach based on the unitary transformation. The particular case of the considered model with X-X intra-rung interaction resembles a quantum compass ladder with additional frustrating diagonal Ising interactions. Using an appropriately chosen unitary transformation, the model under investigation may be reduced to a transverse Ising chain with composite spins, and one may subsequently find the ground state quite rigorously. We obtain …
The entanglement between spin-1/2 interstitial Heisenberg dimers in the mixed spin-(1,1/2) Ising-XXZ double sawtooth ladder is investigated at low temperature. Here, we consider a cyclic four-spin exchange interaction in square plaquette of each block, and investigate the effects of this amazing interaction on the bipartite entanglement between spin-1/2 interstitial dimers. Interestingly, we observe a remarkable difference in concurrence behavior with respect to the cyclic four-spin exchange interaction and magnetic field. Also, the critical points at which the concurrence vanishes are changed…
Recently, a surprising low-temperature behavior has been revealed in a two-leg ladder Ising model with trimer rungs (Weiguo Yin, arXiv:2006.08921). Motivated by these findings, we study this model from another perspective and demonstrate that the reported observations are related to a critical phenomenon in the standard Ising chain. We also discuss a related curiosity, namely, the emergence of a power-law behavior characterized by quasicritical exponents.
The entropy and cooling rate of the both antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 double sawtooth IsingHeisenberg model and mixed-spin (1,1/2) double sawtooth Ising-Heisenberg model on the distorted ladders are rigorously investigated under an adiabatic demagnetization process using the quantum transfer-matrix technique. The models include the XXZ interaction between the interstitial Heisenberg dimers, the Ising coupling between nearest-neighbor spins of the legs and rungs, and additional cyclic four-spin exchange (ring exchange) in the square plaquette of each block. Close to field-induced quantum phase tr…
We consider the quantum quench dynamics of a Heisenberg-Ising spin ladder which is an archetypal model in which confinement of elementary excitations is triggered by internal interactions rather than an external field. We show that the confinement strongly affects the light cone structure of correlation functions providing signatures of the velocities of the mesons of the model. We also show that the meson masses can be measured from the real time analysis of the evolution of the order parameter.
Finite temperature properties of symmetric $\pm J$ multileg Ising ladders and tubes are investigated using the statistical transfer matrix method. The temperature dependences of the specific heat and entropy are calculated. In the case of tubes, it is found that the ground state entropy shows an even-odd oscillation with respect to the number of legs. The same type of oscillation is also found in the ground state energy. On the contrary, these oscillations do not take place in ladders. From the temperature-dependence of the specific heat, it is found that the lowest excitation energy is 4J for…
Magnetization plateaus and enhanced magnetocaloric effect of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg and Heisenberg double sawtooth ladder with four-spin interaction
The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg two-leg ladder accounting for alternating Ising and Heisenberg inter-leg couplings in addition to the Ising intra-leg coupling is rigorously mapped onto to a mixed spin-(3/2,1/2) Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the nodal Ising spins $S=3/2$ and the interstitial spin-1/2 Heisenberg dimers. The latter effective model with higher-order interactions between the nodal and interstitial spins is subsequently exactly solved within the transfer-matrix method. The model under investigation exhibits five different ground states: ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, superant…
We study a class of spin-$1/2$ quantum ladder models with generalised plaquette interactions in the presence of a transverse field. We show that in certain parameter regimes these models have strong zero modes responsible for the long relaxation times of edge spins. By exploiting an infinite set of symmetries in these systems, we show how their Hamiltonians can be represented, in each symmetry sector, by a transverse field Ising chain. Due to the presence of an extensive number of conserved quantities, even if the original system has no disorder, most of these symmetry sectors feature a quasi-…
Saturation field entropies of antiferromagnetic Ising models on quasi one-dimensional lattices (ladders) and the kagome lattice are calculated. The former is evaluated exactly by constructing the corresponding transfer matrices, while the latter calculation uses Binder's algorithm for efficiently and exactly computing the partition function of over 1300 spins to give, in Boltzmann's units, S = 0.393589(6). We comment on the relation of the kagome lattice to the experimental situation in the spin-ice compound dysprosium titanium oxide.
Ground-state behaviour of the frustrated quantum spin-1/2 two-leg ladder with the Heisenberg intra-rung and Ising inter-rung interactions is examined in detail. The investigated model is transformed to the quantum Ising chain with composite spins in an effective transverse and longitudinal field by employing either the bond-state representation or the unitary transformation. It is shown that the ground state of the Heisenberg-Ising ladder can be descended from three exactly solvable models: the quantum Ising chain in a transverse field, the 'classical' Ising chain in a longitudinal field or th…
Magnetoelectric effect of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising ladder in a presence of the external electric and magnetic fields is rigorously examined by taking into account Katsura-Nagaosa-Balatsky mechanism. It is shown that the applied electric field may control a quantum phase transition between the Néel (stripy) ordered phase and the disordered paramagnetic phase. The staggered magnetization vanishes according to a power law with the Ising-type critical exponent 1/8, the electric polarization exhibits a weak singularity and the dielectric susceptibility shows a logarithmic divergence at this pa…
Weakly coupled Ising chains provide a condensed-matter realization of confinement. In these systems, kinks and antikinks bind into mesons due to an attractive interaction potential that increases linearly with the distance between the particles. While single mesons have been directly observed in experiments, the role of the multiparticle continuum and bound states of mesons in the excitation spectrum is far less clear. Using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group methods, we study the dynamical structure factors of one- and two-spin operators in a transverse-field two-leg Ising la…
The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg model on a two-leg ladder with dimer-rung alternation are exactly examined under an adiabatic demagnetization process using the transfer-matrix formalism. We notify that the magnetization curve of the model exhibits plateaux as a function of the applied magnetic field and cyclic four-spin Ising interaction at certain rational fractions of the saturation value. We precisely investigate the ability of cooling/heating of the model nearby the critical points at which discontinuous ground-state phase transition oc…
The Heisenberg-Ising spin ladder is one of the few short-range models showing confinement of elementary excitations without the need of an external field, neither transverse nor longitudinal. This feature makes the model suitable for an experimental realization with ultracold atoms. In this paper, we combine analytic and numerical techniques to precisely characterize its spectrum in the regime of Hamiltonian parameters showing confinement. We find two kinds of particles, which we dub intrachain and interchain mesons, that correspond to bound states of kinks within the same chain or between dif…
We consider a symmetric spin-1/2 Ising-XXZ double sawtooth spin ladder obtained from distorting a spin chain, with the XXZ interaction between the interstitial Heisenberg dimers (which are connected to the spins based on the legs via an Ising-type interaction), the Ising coupling between nearest-neighbor spins of the legs and rungs spins, respectively, and additional cyclic four-spin exchange (ring exchange) in square plaquette of each block. The presented analysis supplemented by results of the exact solution of the model with infinite periodic boundary implies a rich ground state phase diagr…
The extended model of two-leg Ising spin ladder with trimer rungs and next nearest neighbor interaction (NNN) in an external magnetic field is studied using the transfer matrix and linear renormalization group methods. In the standard version (with the same only NN interactions in both legs) such a ladder exhibits very interesting behavior - a frustration driven extremely sharp phase crossover at finite temperature which resembles a phase transition, impossible in one dimension. It is shown that in all considered cases with different interactions in each leg (assymetric ladder), with NNN inter…
The role of nonstoquasticity in the field of quantum annealing and adiabatic quantum computing is an actively debated topic. We study a strongly-frustrated quasi-one-dimensional quantum Ising model on a two-leg ladder to elucidate how a first-order phase transition with a topological origin is affected by interactions of the $\pm XX$-type. Such interactions are sometimes known as stoquastic (negative sign) and nonstoquastic (positive sign) "catalysts". Carrying out a symmetry-preserving real-space renormalization group analysis and extensive density-matrix renormalization group computations, w…
The spin-1/2 transverse field two-leg Ising ladder with nearest-neighbor exchange and plaquette four-spin interaction $J_{4}$ is studied analytically and numerically with the density matrix renormalization group approach. The quantum phase diagram in the transverse field $B$ versus $J_{4}$ plane has been obtained. There are three different phases: a paramagnetic (PM) phase for high values of the transverse field and, for low values of $B$, a ferromagnetic (FM) ordered phase for small $J_{4}$ and a dimerized-rung (DR) phase for large negative values of $J_{4}$. All phases are separated by quant…
The mixed spin-(1,1/2) Ising-Heisenberg double sawtooth ladder containing mixture of both spin-1 and spin-1/2 nodal atoms, and the spin-1/2 interstitial dimers is approximately solved by the transfer-matrix method. Here, we study in detail the ground-state phase diagrams, also influences of the bilinear exchange coupling on the rungs and cyclic four-spin exchange interaction in square plaquette of each block on the magnetization and magnetic susceptibility of the suggested ladder at low temperature. Such a double sawtooth ladder may be found in a Shastry-Sutherland Lattice-type. In spite of od…
Using mainly numerical methods, we investigate the width of the spin gap of a spin-1/2 two-leg ladder described by $\cH= J_\rl \sum_{j=1}^{N/2} [ \vS_{j,a} \cdot \vS_{j+1,a} + \vS_{j,b} \cdot \vS_{j+1,b} ] + J_\rr \sum_{j=1}^{N/2} [λ(S^x_{j,a} S^x_{j,b} + S^y_{j,a} S^y_{j,b}) + S^z_{j,a} S^z_{j,b}] $, where $S^α_{j,a(b)}$ denotes the $α$-component of the spin-1/2 operator at the $j$-th site of the $a (b)$ chain. We mainly focus on the $J_\rr \gg J_\rl > 0$ and $|λ| \ll 1$ case. The width of the spin gap as a function of $λ$ anomalously increases near $λ= 0$; for instance, for $-0.1 < λ< 0.1$ w…
We discuss relation between three different methods to identify topologically distinct short-range valence-bond ground states in spin-$\frac12$ two-leg ladders: the string order parameters, the level-crossing method, and the ground-state expectation value of the twist operator. For this purpose we reexamine a phase transition in the frustrated spin ladder. We propose a proper bosonization of the string order parameters. Then, these three methods are shown to be equivalent reflecting the $Z_2\times Z_2$ symmetry breaking of the order and the disorder fields of the two-dimensional Ising model.
We study Ising chains with arbitrary multispin finite-range couplings, providing an explicit solution of the associated inverse Ising problem, i.e. the problem of inferring the values of the coupling constants from the correlation functions. As an application, we reconstruct the couplings of chain Ising Hamiltonians having exponential or power-law two-spin plus three- or four-spin couplings. The generalization of the method to ladders and to Ising systems where a mean-field interaction is added to general finite-range couplings is as well as discussed.
We consider disordered ladders of the transverse-field Ising model and study their critical properties and entanglement entropy for varying width, $w \le 20$, by numerical application of the strong disorder renormalization group method. We demonstrate that the critical properties of the ladders for any finite $w$ are controlled by the infinite disorder fixed point of the random chain and the correction to scaling exponents contain information about the two-dimensional model. We calculate sample dependent pseudo-critical points and study the shift of the mean values as well as scaling of the wi…
We consider two-dimensional Ising models with randomly distributed ferromagnetic bonds and study the local critical behavior at defect lines by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Both for ladder and chain type defects, non-universal critical behavior is observed: the critical exponent of the defect magnetization is found to be a continuous function of the strength of the defect coupling. Analyzing corresponding stability conditions, we obtain new evidence that the critical exponent $ν$ of the bulk correlation length of the random Ising model does not depend on dilution, i.e. $ν=1$.

The specific heat, structural characterization, and magnetic property studies of a new spin ladder with the geometry of butterfly-shaped configuration are reported. The model introduced here is an infinite spin ladder-type including spin-1/2 particle for which unit blocks consist of two butterflies connected together through their bodies (Body-Body bridges). Localized spins on the wings of butterflies have XXZ Heisenberg interaction with two extra spin-1/2 particles assumed in the center of each cage (unit block), while they have pure Ising-type interaction with those spins that are localized …
We investigate the spin-spin correlation functions of Ising magnets at complex values of the temperature, T. For one-dimensional chain and ladder systems, we show the existence of a kind of helimagnetic order in the vicinity of contours where the leading two eigenvalues of the transfer matrix become equal in magnitude. We analyse the development of long-range order as the two-dimensional limit is approached, and find that there is rich structure in much of the complex-T plane. In particular, and contrary to the work of Fisher on this problem, the development of long-range order is actually ass…
The frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg ladder with Heisenberg intra-rung and Ising inter-rung interactions is exactly solved in a longitudinal magnetic field by taking advantage of the local conservation of the total spin on each rung and the transfer-matrix method. We have rigorously calculated the ground-state phase diagram, magnetization process, magnetocaloric effect and basic thermodynamic quantities for the model, which can be alternatively viewed as an Ising-Heisenberg tetrahedral chain. It is demonstrated that a stepwise magnetization curve with an intermediate plateau at a half of t…
We explore the finite-temperature dynamics of the quasi-1D orbital compass and plaquette Ising models. We map these systems onto a model of free fermions coupled to strictly localized spin-1/2 degrees of freedom. At finite temperature, the localized degrees of freedom act as emergent disorder and localize the fermions. Although the model can be analyzed using free-fermion techniques, it has dynamical signatures in common with typical many-body localized systems: Starting from generic initial states, entanglement grows logarithmically; in addition, equilibrium dynamical correlation functions de…
We study the 2D Ising model on a square lattice with additional non-equal diagonal next-nearest neighbor interactions. The cases of classical and quantum (transverse) models are considered. Possible phases and their locations in the space of three Ising couplings are analyzed. In particular, incommensurate phases occurring only at non-equal diagonal couplings, are predicted. We also analyze a spin-pseudospin model comprised of the quantum Ising model coupled to XY spin chains in a particular region of interactions, corresponding to the Ising sector's super-antiferromagnetic (SAF) ground state.…
We study quantum quenches in the transverse-field Ising model defined on different lattice geometries such as chains, two- and three-leg ladders, and two-dimensional square lattices. Starting from fully polarized initial states, we consider the dynamics of the transverse and the longitudinal magnetization for quenches to weak, strong, and critical values of the transverse field. To this end, we rely on an efficient combination of numerical linked cluster expansions (NLCEs) and a forward propagation of pure states in real time. As a main result, we demonstrate that NLCEs comprising solely recta…
Zeros of the $n$th moment of the partition function $[Z^n]$ are investigated in a vanishing temperature limit $β\to \infty$, $n \to 0$ keeping $y=βn \sim O(1)$. In this limit, the moment parameterized by $y$ characterizes the distribution of the ground-state energy. We numerically investigate the zeros for $\pm J$ Ising spin glass models with several ladder and tree systems, which can be carried out with a feasible computational cost by a symbolic operation based on the Bethe--Peierls method. For several tree systems we find that the zeros tend to approach the real axis of $y$ in the thermodyn…
We apply a quantum teleportation protocol based on the Hayden-Preskill thought experiment to quantify how scrambling a given quantum evolution is. It has an advantage over the direct measurement of out-of-time ordered correlators when used to diagnose the information scrambling in the presence of decoherence effects stemming from a noisy quantum device. We demonstrate the protocol by applying it to two physical systems: Ising spin chain and SU(2) lattice Yang-Mills theory. To this end, we numerically simulate the time evolution of the two theories in the Hamiltonian formalism. The lattice Yang…
A spin-1/2 chain model that includes three spin interactions can effectively describe the dynamics of two species of bosons trapped in an optical lattice with a triangular-ladder configuration. A perturbative theoretical approach and numerical study of its ground state is performed that reveals a rich variety of phases and criticalities. We identify phases with periodicity one, two or three, as well as critical points that belong in the same universality class as the Ising or the three-state Potts model. We establish a range of parameters, corresponding to a large degeneracy present between ph…
