Evidence for evolution from pure states to mixed states in pion creation process pi(-) p -> pi(-)pi(+) n on polarized target and its physical interpretation
In 1982 Hawking suggested that quantum fluctuations of space-time metric will induce a non-unitary evolution from pure initial states to mixed final states in particle interactions at any energy. This hypothesis can be tested using existing CERN data on pi(-) p -> pi(-)pi(+) n on polarized target at 17.2 GeV/c. The purity of the final state is controlled by the purity of recoil nucleon polarization. We develop a spin formalism to calculate expressions for recoil nucleon polarization for two specific pure initial states. Imposing conditions of purity on the recoil nuclon polarization we obtain conditions on the amplitudes which are violated by model independent amplitude analysis of CERN data at large t. We conclude that pure states can evolve into mixed states in pi(-) p -> pi(-)pi(+) n. In quantum theory such non-unitary evolution occurs in open quantum systems interacting with an environment. We present evidence to validate the view of the pion creation process as an open quantum system interacting with a quantum environment. The observed process is time-irreversible and violates CPT symmetry.
Predictions for single spin asymmetries in lepton + p(transv. polarized) -> pion + X and gamma^* + p(transv. polarized) -> pion + X
We present a phenomenological analysis of the $q_{\mathrm{T}}$-weighted transverse spin dependent azimuthal asymmetry recently measured by the COMPASS Collaboration in polarized pion-proton Drell-Yan process. In the kinematical regimes explored by experiments, we consider the leading-twist contributions from the Boer-Mulders distribution functions $h_{1}^{\perp}(x,k_{\mathrm{T}}^{2})$ of both the pion and the proton, the transversity distribution $h_{1}(x,k_{\mathrm{T}}^{2})$ and the pretzelosity distribution $h_{1\mathrm{T}}^{\perp}(x,k_{\mathrm{T}}^{2})$ of the proton, with the unpolarized t…
Recently, the RHICf Collaboration measured the transverse single-spin asymmetries of the very forward neutral pion in polarized $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV, produced at large pseudorapidity ($η\gtrsim 6$). The data show large asymmetries both in longitudinal momentum fraction $x_F$ and transverse momentum $p_T$ at $p_T<1\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$. Employing baryonic triple Regge exchanges, we describe the complete RHICf data for the first time and show that the neutral pion production at low $p_T$ can be interpreted as a diffractive one.
The single pion production (SPP) in the charged-current neutrino (antineutrino) scattering off the polarized nucleon is discussed. The spin asymmetry is predicted within two approaches. The spin polarizations of the target nucleon that are longitudinal and perpendicular to the neutrino momentum are considered. It is shown, in several examples, that information about the SPP dynamics coming from the spin asymmetry is complementary to information obtained from measurements of spin averaged cross section. Indeed, the spin asymmetry is sensitive to the nonresonance background description of the SP…
Previous Lattice QCD calculations of nucleon transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs) focused on the case of transversely polarized nucleons, and thus did not encompass two leading-twist TMDs associated with longitudinal polarization, namely, the helicity TMD and the worm-gear TMD corresponding to transversely polarized quarks in a longitudinally polarized nucleon. Based on a definition of TMDs via hadronic matrix elements of quark bilocal operators containing staple-shaped gauge connections, TMD observables characterizing the aforementioned two TMDs are evaluated, utilizing a…
Understanding the proton spin composition from the quarks and gluons spin polarization and their motion is important to test various kinds of sum rules and nonperturbative properties of hadrons. At the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), we collide longitudinally polarized proton beams and measure the double helicity asymmetry $A_{LL}$, which is an important physical quantity for extracting the polarized parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. Direct photon, jet and charged pion production are good channels to probe the gluon spin polarization inside the proton, with the abilit…
We study the quark Wigner distributions of the pion meson which are the phase-space distributions containing the most general one-parton information.Using the pion wavefunctions deduced from a light-cone quark model, we calculate the Wigner distributions of the unpolarized, longitudinally polarized and transversely polarized quarks inside the pion meson via the Fock-state overlap representation, respectively.We present the numerical results of the transverse Wigner distributions in which the longitudinal momentum fraction is integrated out. The mixed Wigner distributions as functions of $b_y$ …
The Drell-Yan process provides important information on the internal structure of hadrons including transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). In this work we present calculations for all leading twist structure functions describing the pion induced Drell-Yan process. The non-perturbative input for the TMDs is taken from the light-front constituent quark model, the spectator model, and available parametrizations of TMDs extracted from the experimental data. TMD evolution is implemented at Next-to-Leading Logarithmic precision for the first time for all asymmetries. Our…
Measurement of the Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetry for Mid-rapidity Production of Neutral Pions in Polarized p+p Collisions at 200 GeV Center-of-Mass Energy
The double-charm tetraquark meson $T_{cc}^+(3875)$ can be produced in high-energy proton-proton collisions by the creation of the charm mesons $D^{*+} D^0$ at short distances followed by their binding into $T_{cc}^+$. The $T_{cc}^+$ can also be produced by the creation of $D^{*+} D^{*+}$ at short distances followed by their rescattering into $T_{cc}^+ π^+$. A charm-meson triangle singularity produces a narrow peak in the $T_{cc}^+ π^+$ invariant mass distribution 6.1 MeV above the threshold with a width of about 1 MeV. Well beyond the peak, the differential cross section decreases with the inv…
