We study mass fluxes in aggregation models where mass transfer to large scales by aggregation occurs alongside desorption or fragmentation. Two models are considered. (1) A system of diffusing, aggregating particles with influx and outflux of particles (in-out model) (2) A system of diffusing aggregating particles with fragmentation (chipping model). Both these models can exist in phases where probability distributions are power laws. In these power law phases, we argue that the two point correlation function should have a certain homogeneity exponent. These arguments are based on the exact constant flux scaling valid for simple aggregation with input. Predictions are compared with Monte Carlo simulations.
We present a review of nonequilibrium phase transitions in mass-transport models with kinetic processes like fragmentation, diffusion, aggregation, etc. These models have been used extensively to study a wide range of physical problems. We provide a detailed discussion of the analytical and numerical techniques used to study mass-transport phenomena.
We study real space condensation in aggregation-fragmentation models where the total mass is not conserved, as in phenomena like cloud formation and intracellular trafficking. We study the scaling properties of the system with influx and outflux of mass at the boundaries using numerical simulations, supplemented by analytical results in the absence of fragmentation. The system is found to undergo a phase transition to an unusual condensate phase, characterized by strong intermittency and giant fluctuations of the total mass. A related phase transition also occurs for biased movement of large m…
We use extreme value statistics to study the dynamics of coarsening in aggregation-fragmentation models which form condensates in the steady state. The dynamics is dominated by the formation of local condensates on a coarsening length scale which grows in time in both the zero range process and conserved mass aggregation model. The local condensate mass distribution exhibits scaling, which implies anomalously large fluctuations, with mean and standard deviation both proportional to the coarsening length. Remarkably, the state of the system during coarsening is governed not by the steady state,…
A simple model of ballistic aggregation and fragmentation is proposed. The model is characterized by two energy thresholds, Eagg and Efrag, which demarcate different types of impacts: If the kinetic energy of the relative motion of a colliding pair is smaller than Eagg or larger than Efrag, particles respectively merge or break; otherwise they rebound. We assume that particles are formed from monomers which cannot split any further and that in a collision-induced fragmentation the larger particle splits into two fragments. We start from the Boltzmann equation for the mass-velocity distribution…
We investigate statistical properties of trails formed by a random process incorporating aggregation, fragmentation, and diffusion. In this stochastic process, which takes place in one spatial dimension, two neighboring trails may combine to form a larger one and also, one trail may split into two. In addition, trails move diffusively. The model is defined by two parameters which quantify the fragmentation rate and the fragment size. In the long-time limit, the system reaches a steady state, and our focus is the limiting distribution of trail weights. We find that the density of trail weight h…
There is a formal correspondence between the isotropic 3-wave kinetic equation and the rate equations for a non-linear fragmentation--aggregation process. We exploit this correspondence to study analytically the time evolution of the wave frequency power spectrum. Specifically, we analyzed a 3-wave turbulence in which the wave interaction kernel is a constant. We consider both forced and decaying turbulence. In the forced case, the scaling function diverges as $x^{-3/2}$ as expected from Kolmogorov-Zakharov theory. In the decaying case, the scaling function exhibits non-trivial, and hitherto u…
We study the nonequilibrium phase transition in a model of aggregation of masses allowing for diffusion, aggregation on contact and fragmentation. The model undergoes a dynamical phase transition in all dimensions. The steady state mass distribution decays exponentially for large mass in one phase. On the contrary, in the other phase it has a power law tail and in addition an infinite aggregate. The model is solved exactly within a mean field approximation which keeps track of the distribution of masses. In one dimension, by mapping to an equivalent lattice gas model, exact steady states are o…
We study a conserved mass aggregation model with mass-dependent fragmentation in one dimension. In the model, the whole mass $m$ of a site isotropically diffuse with unit rate. With rate $ω$, a mass $m^λ$ is fragmented from the site and moves to a randomly selected nearest neighbor site. Since the fragmented mass is smaller than the whole mass $m$ of a site for $λ< 1$, the on-site attractive interaction exists for the case. For $λ= 0$, the model is known to undergo the condensation phase transitions from a fluid phase into a condensed phase as the density of total masses ($ρ$) increases beyond…

We study here one-dimensional model of aggregation and fragmentation of clusters of particles obeying the stochastic discrete-time kinetics of the generalized Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (gTASEP) on open chains. Isolated particles and the first particle of a cluster of particles hop one site forward with probability $p$; when the first particle of a cluster hops, the remaining particles of the same cluster may hop with a modified probability $p_m$, modelling a special kinematic interaction between neighboring particles, or remain in place with probability $1-p_m$. The model con…
We study nonequilibrium phase transitions in a mass-aggregation model which allows for diffusion, aggregation on contact, dissociation, adsorption and desorption of unit masses. We analyse two limits explicitly. In the first case mass is locally conserved whereas in the second case local conservation is violated. In both cases the system undergoes a dynamical phase transition in all dimensions. In the first case, the steady state mass distribution decays exponentially for large mass in one phase, and develops an infinite aggregate in addition to a power-law mass decay in the other phase. In th…
We revisit two basic Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Methods to model aggregation kinetics and extend them for aggregation processes with collisional fragmentation (shattering). We test the performance and accuracy of the extended methods and compare their performance with efficient deterministic finite-difference method applied to the same model. We validate the stochastic methods on the test problems and apply them to verify the existence of oscillating regimes in the aggregation-fragmentation kinetics recently detected in deterministic simulations. We confirm the emergence of steady oscillati…
In this article, I have outlined how an accomplished researcher like Robert Ziff has influenced a new generation of researchers across the globe like gravity as an action-at-a-distance. In the 80s Ziff made significant contributions to the kinetics of fragmentation followed by the kinetics of aggregation. Here, I will discuss fractal and multifractal that emerges in fragmentation and aggregation processes where the dynamics is governed by non-trivial conservation laws. I have then discussed my recent works and results on percolation where I made extensive use of Newman-Ziff fast Monte Carlo al…
We investigate aggregation and fragmentation dynamics of tracers and inertial aggregates in random flows leading to steady state size distributions. Our objective is to elucidate the impact of changes in aggregation rates, due to differences in advection dynamics, especially with respect to the influence of inertial effects. This aggregation process is, at the same time, balanced by fragmentation triggered by local hydrodynamic stress. Our study employs an individual-particle-based model, tracking position, velocity and size of each aggregate. We compare the steady-state size distribution form…

Saturn's rings consist of a huge number of water ice particles, with a tiny addition of rocky material. They form a flat disk, as the result of an interplay of angular momentum conservation and the steady loss of energy in dissipative inter-particle collisions. For particles in the size range from a few centimeters to a few meters, a power-law distribution of radii, $\sim r^{-q}$ with $q \approx 3$, has been inferred; for larger sizes, the distribution has a steep cutoff. It has been suggested that this size distribution may arise from a balance between aggregation and fragmentation of ring pa…
Some models of clustering processes are formulated and analytically solved employing generating functions methods. Those models include events which result from combined action of the coagulation and fragmentation processes. Fragmentation processes of two kinds, so-called similar and arbitrary, ones, are brought forward, and the explicit forms of their solutions are produced. This implies some possibility of existence of different aggregation mechanisms for clusters creation differing in their inner structure. All the models are based on "the three-level bunch" scheme of interaction between th…
We analyze systems of clusters and interacting upon colliding---a collision between two clusters may lead to merging or fragmentation---and we also investigate the influence of additional spontaneous fragmentation events. We consider both closed systems in which the total mass remains constant and open systems driven by a source of small-mass clusters. In closed systems, the size distribution of aggregates approaches a steady state. For these systems the relaxation time and the steady state distribution are determined mostly by spontaneous fragmentation while collisional fragmentation plays a …
We study in detail the application of renormalisation theory to models of cluster aggregation and fragmentation of relevance to nucleation and growth processes. We investigate the Becker-Dorging equations, originally formulated to describe and analyse non-equilibrium phase transitions, and more recently generalised to describe a wide range of physicochemical problems. In the present paper we analyse how the systematic coarse-graining renormalisation of the \BD system of equations affects the aggregation and fragmentation rate coefficients. We consider the case of power-law size-dependent clust…
To study the effect of quenched disorder in a class of reaction-diffusion systems, we introduce a conserved mass model of diffusion and aggregation in which the mass moves as a whole to a nearest neighbour on most sites while it fragments off as a single monomer (i.e. chips off) from certain fixed sites. Once the mass leaves any site, it coalesces with the mass present on its neighbour. We study in detail the effect of a \emph{single} chipping site on the steady state in arbitrary dimensions, with and without bias. In the thermodynamic limit, the system can exist in one of the following phases…
The inclusion of a fragmentation mechanism in population balance equations introduces complex interactions that make the analytical or even computational treatment much more difficult than for the pure aggregation case. This is specially true when variable sized fragments are allowed, because of the exponential growth in fragments size combinations with the number of monomers in the exchanges. In this contribution we present a new model that incorporates an instability threshold in the clusters, which induces arbitrary losses or gains of particles by fracture with a substantial simplification …
We study analytically giant fluctuations and temporal intermittency in a stochastic one-dimensional model with diffusion and aggregation of masses in the bulk, along with influx of single particles and outflux of aggregates at the boundaries. We calculate various static and dynamical properties of the total mass in the system for both biased and unbiased movement of particles and different boundary conditions. These calculations show that (i) in the unbiased case, the total mass has a non-Gaussian distribution and shows giant fluctuations which scale as system size (ii) in all the cases, the s…
We calculate the bulk-diffusion coefficient and the conductivity in a broad class of conserved-mass aggregation processes on a ring of discrete sites. These processes involve chipping and fragmentation of masses, which diffuse around and aggregate upon contact with their neighboring masses. We find that, even in the absence of microscopic time reversibility, the systems satisfy an Einstein relation, which connects the ratio of the conductivity and the bulk-diffusion coefficient to mass fluctuation. Interestingly, when aggregation dominates over chipping, the conductivity or, equivalently, the …
We consider a system of aggregated clusters of particles, subjected to coagulation and fragmentation processes with mass dependent rates. Each monomer particle can aggregate with larger clusters, and each cluster can fragment into individual monomers with a rate directly proportional to the aggregation rate. The dynamics of the cluster densities is governed by a set of Smoluchowski equations, and we consider the addition of a source of monomers at constant rate. The whole dynamics can be reduced to solving a unique non-linear differential equation which displays self-oscillations in a specific…
We show that the isotropic 3-wave kinetic equation is equivalent to the mean field rate equations for an aggregation-fragmentation problem with an unusual fragmentation mechanism. This analogy is used to write the theory of 3-wave turbulence almost entirely in terms of a single scaling parameter. A new numerical method for solving the kinetic equation over a large range of frequencies is developed by extending Lee's method for solving aggregation equations. The new algorithm is validated against some analytic calculations of the Kolmogorov-Zakharov constant for some families of model interacti…
We define and study one-dimensional model of irreversible aggregation of particles obeying a discrete-time kinetics which is a special limit of the generalized Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (gTASEP) on open chains. The model allows for clusters of particles to translate as a whole entity one site to the right with the same probability as single particles do. A particle and a cluster, as well as two clusters, irreversibly aggregate whenever they become nearest neighbors. Nonequilibrium stationary phases appear under the balance of injection and ejection of particles. By extensive …
We calculate exactly the two point mass-mass correlations in arbitrary spatial dimensions in the aggregation model of Takayasu. In this model, masses diffuse on a lattice, coalesce upon contact and adsorb unit mass from outside at a constant rate. Our exact calculation of the variance of mass at a given site proves explicitly, without making any assumption of scaling, that the upper critical dimension of the model is 2. We also extend our method to calculate the spatio-temporal correlations in a generalized class of models with aggregation, fragmentation and injection which include, in particu…
We study a system of self-propelled particles (SPPs) in which individual particles are allowed to switch between a fast aligning and a slow nonaligning state depending upon the degree of the alignment in the neighborhood. The switching is modeled using a threshold for the local order parameter. This additional attribute gives rise to a mixed phase, in contrast to the ordered phases found in clean SPP systems. As the threshold is increased from zero, we find the sudden appearance of clusters of nonaligners. Clusters of nonaligners coexist with moving clusters of aligners with continual coalesce…
In systems where deposition rates are high compared to diffusion, desorption and other mechanisms that generate correlations, a crossover from random to correlated growth of surface roughness is expected at a characteristic time t_0. This crossover is analyzed in lattice models via scaling arguments, with support from simulation results presented here and in other authors works. We argue that the amplitudes of the saturation roughness and of the saturation time scale as {t_0}^{1/2} and t_0, respectively. For models with lateral aggregation, which typically are in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) …
