We consider the dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model on general lattices and prove a Lieb-Robinson bound for observables whose supports are separated by an initially almost particle-free region. We further obtain a maximal velocity bound for particle transport through an initially empty region which also applies to long-range hopping. We study thermalization of a two-component Bose-Hubbard model by exact diagonalization. Initially the two components do not interact and are each at equilibrium but with different temperatures. As the on-site inter-component interaction is turned on, perfect thermalization occurs. Remarkably, not merely those simple "realistic" physical observables thermalize but even the density matrix of the \textit{whole} system---the time-averaged density matrix of the system can be well approximated by that of a canonical ensemble. A conjecture about this fact is put forward.

We compare and contrast the entangling properties of a three-well Bose-Hubbard model and an optical beamsplitter. The coupling between the different modes is linear in both cases, and we may identify two output modes. Obvious differences are that our Bose-Hubbard model, with only the middle well initially occupied, does not have a vacuum input port, there is no equivalent of a collisional, $χ^{(3)}$ nonlinearity with the beamsplitter, and the results of the Bose-Hubbard model show a time-dependence. We theoretically investigate the scattering of few photon light on Bose-Hubbard lattices using diagrammatic scattering theory. We explicitly derive general analytical expressions for the lowest order photonic correlation functions, which we apply numerically to several different lattices. We focus specifically on non-linear effects visible in the intensity-intensity correlation function and explain bunching and anti-bunching effects in dimers, chains, rings and planes. Ultracold atoms in optical lattices provide a unique opportunity to study Bose- Hubbard physics. In this work we show that by considering a spatially varying onsite interaction it is possible to manipulate the motion of excitations above the Mott phase in a Bose-Hubbard system. Specifically, we show that it is possible to "engineer" regimes where excitations will negatively refract, facilitating the construction of a flat lens.
For strongly interacting bosons in optical lattices the standard description using Bose-Hubbard model becomes questionable. The role of excited bands becomes important. In such a situation we compare results of simulations using multiband Bose-Hubbard model with a recent proposition based on a time dependent variational approach. It is shown that the latter, in its original formulation, uses too small variational space leading often to spurious effects. Possible expansion of variational approach is discussed.
We study theoretically the dynamics of two weakly-coupled Bose-Josephson junctions, prepared with the same particle number $N$ and Josephson excitation number $ν$ but with different reduced one-particle purity $γ$. A novel entropy oscillation mode is predicted, in which one-particle coherence is transferred between the Bose-Hubbard dimers with no particle or energy transfer. We explain this purity oscillation using a semiclassical picture.
We analyze Josephson's oscillation of Bose particles in the open (dissipative) Bose-Hubbard dimer. First, we excite the dimer from the vacuum state into a state suitable for observing the oscillation by using a special protocol for external driving. Next, we switch off the driving and observe the oscillation. It is shown that the main mechanism for the decay of Josephson's oscillation is the dephasing due to fluctuating number of particles in open systems. An analytical estimate for the decay time is obtained.
We investigate nonequilibrium energy transfer in a single-site Bose-Hubbard model coupled to two thermal baths. By including a quantum kinetic equation combined with full counting statistics, we investigate the steady state energy flux and noise power. We develop a novel approach to understand the phases of one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard models. We integrate the simplicity of the mean-field theory and the numerical power of the density matrix renormalization group method to build an effective numerical technique with moderate computational resources to determine superfluid order parameters and correlation functions of large one-dimensional systems. We demonstrate the applicability of this method to directly identify superfluid, Mott insulator, and density wave phases in Bose-Hubbard models.

Cold atom optical lattices typically simulate zero-range Hubbard models. We discuss the theoretical possibility of using excited states of optical lattices to generate extended range Hubbard models. We find that bosons confined to higher bands of optical lattices allow for a rich phase diagram, including the supersolid phase. Using Gutzwiller, mean field theory we establish the parameter regime necessary to maintain metastable states generated by an extended Bose-Hubbard model.

We study the attractive Bose-Hubbard model with a tunable, on-site three-body constraint. It is shown that the critical behavior of the system undergoing a phase transition from pair-superfluid to superfluid at unit filling depends on the value of the three-body repulsion. In particular, we calculate critical exponents and the central charge governing the quantum phase transition.

In this work, we decompose the time-evolution of the Bose-Hubbard model into a sequence of logic gates that can be implemented on a continuous-variable photonic quantum computer. We propose a scheme for the detection of quantum phase transitions in the 1D Bose-Hubbard (BH) and 1D Extended Bose-Hubbard (EBH) models, using the non-demolition measurement technique of quantum polarization spectroscopy. We use collective measurements of the effective total angular momentum of a particular spatial mode to characterise the Mott insulator to superfluid phase transition in the BH model, and the transition to a density wave state in the EBH model. We extend the application of collective measurements to the ground states at various deformations of a super-lattice potential.
We show that a two-atoms Bose-Hubbard model exhibits three different phases in the behavior of thermal entanglement in its parameter space. These phases are demonstrated to be traceable back to the existence of quantum phase transitions in the same system. Using a similarity Hamiltonian renormalization procedure, we determine an effective spin-1/2 representation of the Bose-Hubbard model at half-integer filling and at a finite on-site interaction energy U. By means of bosonization, we are able to recast the effective Hamiltonian as that of a spin-1/2 XXZ magnetic chain with pertinently renormalized coupling and anisotropy parameters. We propose and analyse analogs of optical cavities for atoms using two-well Bose-Hubbard models with pumping and losses. With one well pumped, we find that both the mean-field dynamics and the quantum statistics show a quantitative dependence on the choice of damped well. Both the systems we analyse remain far from equilibrium, preserving good coherence between the wells in the steady-state. In this paper, we studied a generalized Bose-Hubbard model on a checkerboard lattice with topologically nontrivial flat-band. We used mean-field method to decouple the model Hamiltonian and obtained phase diagram by Landau theory of second-order phase transition. We further calculate the energy gap and the dispersion of quasi-particle or quasi-hole in Mott insulator state and found that in strong interaction limit the quasi-particles or the quasi-holes also have flat bands.
We study the quench from the Mott to the superfluid phase in the Bose-Hubbard model and investigate the spatial-temporal growth of phase coherence, i.e., phase locking between initially uncorrelated sites. To this end, we establish a hierarchy of correlations via a controlled expansion into inverse powers of the coordination number $1/Z$. The pairing term gives rise to an unusual gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Ising phase that has number fluctuation but no off-diagonal long range order. We study the thermal quantum correlations and entanglement in spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model with two and three particles. While we use negativity to calculate entanglement, more general non-classical correlations are quantified using a new measure based on a necessary and sufficient condition for zero-discord state. We propose and analyse a pumped Bose-Hubbard dimer as a source of continuous-variable Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering with non-Gaussian statistics. We use the truncated Wigner representation to calculate third and fourth order cumulants, finding clear signals of non-Gaussianity. We also calculate the products of inferred quadrature variances which indicate that states demonstrating the EPR paradox are present. The hallmark of superfluidity is the appearance of metastable flow-states that carry a persistent circulating current. Considering Bose-Hubbard superfluid rings, we clarify the role of "quantum chaos" in this context. We show that the standard Landau and Bogoliubov superfluidity criteria fail for such low-dimensional circuits. We also discuss the feasibility for a coherent operation of a SQUID-like setup. We investigate the open dynamics of an atomic impurity embedded in a one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard lattice. We consider a family of chaotic Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonians (BHH) parameterized by the coupling strength $k$ between neighboring sites. As $k$ increases the eigenstates undergo changes, reflected in the structure of the Local Density of States. We analyze these changes, both numerically and analytically, using perturbative and semiclassical methods. Although our focus is on the quantum trimer, the presented methodology is applicable for the analysis of longer lattices as well.
We show that polaritons in an array of interacting micro-cavities with strong atom-photon coupling can form a two-component Bose-Hubbard model. Both polariton species are thereby protected against spontaneous emission as their atomic part is stored in two ground states of the atoms. The parameters of the effective model can be tuned via the driving strength of external lasers. To this aim, we use a mean field Gutzwiller ansatz and a probabilistic mean field perturbation theory. We investigate an $N$-particle Bose-Hubbard dimer with an additional effective decay term in one of the sites. A mean-field approximation for this non-Hermitian many-particle system is derived, based on a coherent state approximation. The resulting nonlinear, non-Hermitian two-level dynamics, in particular the fixed point structures showing characteristic modifications of the self-trapping transition, are analyzed. Based on the exact results obtained by Bethe ansatz, we demonstrate the existence of stable bound pair (BP) wave packet in Bose Hubbard model with arbitrary on-site interaction U. In large-U regime, it is found that an incoming single-particle (SP) can coherently pass through a BP wave packet and leave a coherent shift in the position of it.
