The present paper points out to a novel scenario for formation of chaotic attractors in a class of models of excitable cell membranes near an Andronov-Hopf bifurcation (AHB). The mechanism underlying chaotic dynamics admits a simple and visual description in terms of the families of one-dimensional first-return maps, which are constructed using the combination of asymptotic and numerical techniques. The bifurcation structure of the continuous system (specifically, the proximity to a degenerate AHB) endows the Poincare map with distinct qualitative features such as unimodality and the presence of the boundary layer, where the map is strongly expanding. This structure of the map in turn explains the bifurcation scenarios in the continuous system including chaotic mixed-mode oscillations near the border between the regions of sub- and supercritical AHB. The proposed mechanism yields the statistical properties of the mixed-mode oscillations in this regime. The statistics predicted by the analysis of the Poincare map and those observed in the numerical experiments of the continuous system show a very good agreement.
We study the two-dimensional border-collision normal form (a four-parameter family of continuous, piecewise-linear maps on $\mathbb{R}^2$) in the robust chaos parameter region of [S. Banerjee, J.A. Yorke, C. Grebogi, Robust Chaos, Phys. Rev. Lett. 80(14):3049--3052, 1998]. We use renormalisation to partition this region by the number of connected components of a chaotic Milnor attractor. This reveals previously undescribed bifurcation structure in a succinct way.
Excited-state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs) are critical phenomena that generate singularities in the spectrum of quantum systems. {For systems with a classical counterpart,} these phenomena have their origin in the classical limit when the separatrix of an unstable periodic orbit divides phase space into different regions. Using a semiclassical theory of wave propagation based on the manifolds of unstable periodic orbits, we describe the quantum states associated with an ESQPT {for the quantum standard map: a paradigmatic example of a kicked quantum system}. {Moreover, we show that finit…
We consider a simple model of communities interacting via bilinear terms. After analyzing the thermal equilibrium case, which can be described by an Hamiltonian, we introduce the dynamics that, for Ising-like variables, reduces to a Glauber-like dynamics. We analyze and compare four different versions of the dynamics: flow (differential equations), map (discrete-time dynamics), local-time update flow, and local-time update map. The presence of only bilinear interactions prevent the flow cases to develop any dynamical instability, the system converging always to the thermal equilibrium. The sit…

Impacting mechanical systems with suitable parameter settings exhibit a large amplitude chaotic oscillation close to the grazing with the impacting surface. The cause behind this uncertainty is the square root singularity and the occurrence of dangerous border collision bifurcation. In the case of one degree of freedom mechanical systems, it has already been shown that this phenomenon occurs under certain conditions. This paper proposes the same uncertainty of a two-degree freedom mechanical impacting system under specific requirements. This paper shows that the phenomena earlier reported in t…
