The goal of this paper is to describe the various kinetic equations which arise from scaling limits of interacting particle systems. We provide a formalism which allows us to determine the kinetic equation for a given interaction potential and scaling limit. Our focus in this paper is on particle systems with long-range interactions. The derivation here is formal, but it provides an interpretation of particle systems as the motion of a particle in a random force field with a friction term which is due to the interaction with the surrounding particles. Some of the technical details of this meth…

It is long known that the Fokker-Planck equation with prescribed constant coefficients of diffusion and linear friction describes the ensemble average of the stochastic evolutions in velocity space of a Brownian test particle immersed in a heat bath of fixed temperature. Apparently, it is not so well known that the same partial differential equation, but now with constant coefficients which are functionals of the solution itself rather than being prescribed, describes the kinetic evolution (in the infinite particle limit) of an isolated N-particle system with certain stochastic interactions. H…
We present and analyze two simple $N$-particle particle systems for the spread of an infection, respectively with binary and with multi-body interactions. We establish a convergence result, as $N \to \infty$, to a set of kinetic equations, providing a mathematical justification of related numerical schemes. We analyze rigorously the time asymptotics of these equations, and compare the models numerically.

The kinetic energy of a multi-particle system is described by the one-particle kinetic energy density matrix $τ(x, y)$. Alongside the one-particle density matrix $γ(x, y)$, it is one of the key objects in the quantum-mechanical approximation schemes. We prove the asymptotic formula $λ_k \sim (Bk)^{-2}$, $B \ge 0$, as $k\to\infty$, for the eigenvalues $λ_k$ of the self-adjoint operator $\boldsymbol{\sf T}\ge 0$ with kernel $τ(x, y)$.
In this paper we consider the stochastic dynamics of a finite system of particles in a finite volume (Kac-like particle system) which annihilate with probability $α\in (0,1)$ or collide elastically with probability $1-α$. We first establish the well-posedness of the particle system which exhibits no conserved quantities. We rigorously prove that, in some thermodynamic limit, a suitable hierarchy of kinetic equations is recovered for which tensorized solution to the homogenous Boltzmann with annihilation is a solution. For bounded collision kernels, this shows in particular that propagation of …
This paper is devoted to the description of the evolution of states of quantum many-particle systems within the framework of a one-particle density operator, which enables to construct the kinetic equations in scaling limits in the presence of correlations of particle states at initial time, for instance, correlations characterizing the condensed states.
We consider the microscopic solutions of the Boltzmann-Enskog equation discovered by Bogolyubov. The fact that the time-irreversible kinetic equation has time-reversible microscopic solutions is rather surprising. We analyze this paradox and show that the reversibility or irreversibility property of the Boltzmann-Enskog equation depends on the considered class of solutions. If the considered solutions have the form of sums of delta-functions, then the equation is reversible. If the considered solutions belong to the class of continuously differentiable functions, then the equation is irreversi…
We study a model of mass-bearing coagulating planar Brownian particles. Coagulation is prone to occur when two particles become within a distance of order $ε$. We assume that the initial number of particles is of the order of $| \log ε|. Under suitable assumptions on the initial distribution of particles and the microscopic coagulation propensities, we show that the macroscopic particle densities satisfy a Smoluchowski-type equation.

We prove that to each initial datum in a set of positive measure in phase space, there exist uncountably-many associated weak solutions of Newton's equations of motion which govern the dynamics of two non-spherical sets with real-analytic boundaries subject to the conservation of linear momentum, angular momentum and kinetic energy. We prove this result by first exhibiting non-uniqueness of classical solution to a constrained Monge-Ampère equation posed on Euclidean space, and then applying the deep existence theory of Ballard for hard particle dynamics. In the final section of the article, we…
We compute the kinetic energy of the Langevin particle using different approaches. We build stochastic differential equations that describe this physical quantity based on both the Itô and Stratonovich stochastic integrals. It is shown that the Itô equation possesses a unique solution whereas the Stratonovich one possesses infinitely many, all but one absent of physical meaning. We discuss how this fact matches with the existent discussion on the Itô vs Stratonovich dilemma and the apparent preference towards the Stratonovich interpretation in the physical literature.
In the paper we discuss possible approaches to the problem of the rigorous derivation of quantum kinetic equations from underlying many-particle dynamics. For the description of a many-particle evolution we construct solutions of the Cauchy problems of the BBGKY hierarchy and the dual BBGKY hierarchy in suitable Banach spaces. In the framework of the conventional approach to the description of kinetic evolution the mean-field asymptotics of the quantum BBGKY hierarchy solution is constructed. We develop also alternative approaches. One method is based on the construction of the solution asympt…
We develop a rigorous formalism for the description of the evolution of states of quantum many-particle systems in terms of a one-particle density operator. For initial states which are specified in terms of a one-particle density operator the equivalence of the description of the evolution of quantum many-particle states by the Cauchy problem of the quantum BBGKY hierarchy and by the Cauchy problem of the generalized quantum kinetic equation together with a sequence of explicitly defined functionals of a solution of stated kinetic equation is established in the space of trace class operators.…
We propose a new model for the description of a gravitating multi particle system, viewed as a kinetic gas. The properties of the, colliding or non-colliding, particles are encoded into a so called one-particle distribution function, which is a density on the space of allowed particle positions and velocities, i.e. on the tangent bundle of the spacetime manifold. We argue that an appropriate theory of gravity, describing the gravitational field generated by a kinetic gas, must also be modeled on the tangent bundle. The most natural mathematical framework for this task is Finsler spacetime geom…
We analyze the continuous time evolution of a $d$-dimensional system of $N$ self propelled particles with a kinematic constraint on the velocities inspired by the original Vicsek's one \cite{VCB-JCS}. Interactions among particles are specified by a pairwise potential in such a way that the velocity of any given particle is updated to the weighted average velocity of all those particles interacting with it. The weights are given in terms of the interaction rate function. When the size of the system is fixed, we show the existence of an invariant manifold in the phase space and prove its exponen…
We derive simple analytical expressions for the particle density $ρ(r)$ and the kinetic energy density $τ(r)$ for a system of noninteracting fermions in a $d-$dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator potential. We test the Thomas-Fermi (TF, or local-density) approximation for the functional relation $τ[ρ]$ using the exact $ρ(r)$ and show that it locally reproduces the exact kinetic energy density $τ(r)$, {\it including the shell oscillations,} surprisingly well everywhere except near the classical turning point. For the special case of two dimensions (2D), we obtain the unexpected analytical …
We propose a general framework of quantum kinetic Monte Carlo algorithm, based on a stochastic representation of a series expansion of the quantum evolution. Two approaches have been developed in the context of quantum many-body spin dynamics, using different decomposition of the Hamiltonian. The effectiveness of the methods is tested for many-body spin systems up to 40 spins.
We develop a rigorous formalism for the description of the evolution of observables of quantum systems of particles in the mean-field scaling limit. The corresponding asymptotics of a solution of the initial-value problem of the dual quantum BBGKY hierarchy is constructed. Moreover, links of the evolution of marginal observables and the evolution of quantum states described in terms of a one-particle marginal density operator are established. Such approach gives the alternative description of the kinetic evolution of quantum many-particle systems to generally accepted approach on basis of kine…
A new formulation of relativistic classical mechanics allows a revisiting of old unsolved problems in relativistic kinetic theory and in relativistic statistical mechanics. In particular a definition of the relativistic micro-canonical partition function is given strictly in terms of the Poincaré generators of an interacting N-particle system both in the inertial and non-inertial rest frames. The non-relativistic limit allows a definition of both the inertial and non-inertial micro-canonical ensemble strictly in terms of the Galilei generators. Also the one-particle relativistic distribution f…
