In this paper, spinor and vector decomposition of SU(2) gauge potential are presented and their equivalence is constructed using a simply proposal. We also obtain the action of Faddeev nonlinear O(3) sigma model from the SU(2) massive gauge field theory which is proposed according to the gauge invariant principle. At last, the knot structure in SU(2) Chern-Simons filed theory is discussed in terms of the $ϕ$--mapping topological current theory. The topological charge of the knot is characterized by the Hopf indices and the Brouwer degrees of $ϕ$-mapping.
Nilpotency of the pure spinor BRST operator in a curved background implies superspace equations of motion for the background. By computing one-loop corrections to nilpotency for the heterotic sigma model, the Yang-Mills Chern-Simons corrections to the background are derived.
The non-relativistic `Dirac' equation of Lévy-Leblond is used to describe a spin {\small 1/2} particle interacting with a Chern-Simons gauge field. Static, purely magnetic, self-dual spinor vortices are constructed. The solution can be `exported' to a uniform magnetic background field.
The interaction of a spin 1/2 particle (described by the non-relativistic "Dirac" equation of Lévy-Leblond) with Chern-Simons gauge fields is studied. It is shown, that similarly to the four dimensional spinor models, there is a consistent possibility of coupling them also by axial or chiral type currents. Static self dual vortex solutions together with a vortex-lattice are found with the new couplings.
We make a detailed investigation on the quantum corrections to Chern-Simons spinor electrodynamics. Starting from Chern-Simons spinor quantum electrodynamics with the Maxwell term $-1/(4γ){\int}d^3x F_{μν}F^{μν}$ and by calculating the vacuum polarization tensor, electron self-energy and on-shell vertex, we explicitly show that the Ward identity is satisfied and hence verify that the physical quantities are independent of the procedure of taking $γ{\to}{\infty}$ at one-loop and tree levels. In particular, we find the three-dimensional analogue of the Schwinger anomalous magnetic moment term of…
It is shown that the non-relativistic `Dirac' equation of Lévy-Leblond, we used recently to describe a spin $1/2$ field interacting non-relativistically with a Chern-Simons gauge field, can be obtained by lightlike reduction from $3+1$ dimensions. This allows us to prove that the system is Schrödinger symmetric. A spinor representation of the Schrödinger group is presented. Static, self-dual solutions, describing spinor vortices are given and shown to be the non-relativistic limits of the fermionic vortices found by Cho et al. The construction is extended to external harmonic and uniform magne…
Differential regularization is used to investigate the one-loop quantum corrections to Chern-Simons-Maxwell spinor and scalar electrodynamics. We illustrate the techniques to write the loop amplitudes in coordinate space. The short-distance expansion method is developed to perform the Fourier transformation of the amplitudes into momentum space and the possible renormalization ambiguity in Chern-Simons type gauge theories in terms of differential regularization is discussed. We also stress that the surface terms appearing in the differential regularization should be kept along for finite theor…
We study the duality of the supersymmetric self-dual and Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories coupled to a fermionic matter superfield, using a master action. This approach evades the difficulties inherent to the quartic couplings that appear when matter is represented by a scalar superfield. The price is that the spinorial matter superfield represents a unusual supersymmetric multiplet, whose main physical properties we also discuss.
The physical states of D=5 holomorphic Chern-Simons theory correspond to on-shell D=10 open superstring states in the cohomology of $q_+$, where $q_+$ is one of the 16 spacetime supersymmetry generators. Scattering amplitudes of these states can be computed either using the usual Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz (RNS) superstring prescription with N=1 worldsheet supersymmetry, or using a topological $\hat c$=5 string theory with twisted N=2 worldsheet supersymmetry. It will be argued that the relation between D=5 holomophic Chern-Simons and the RNS superstring is identical to the relation between the the …
We present analytical solutions for homogenous and isotropic spaces of the supersymmetric Chern-Simons model with matter in the adjoint representation. The configurations that we found correspond to a gravitating spinor content and torsion is also present. The spinor behaves like dark energy in the sense that drives an exponential expansion. The solution found can be seen as an anisotropic fluid.
The one-loop quantum corrections of Chern-Simons spinor electrodynamics in the light-cone gauge has been investigated. We have calculated the vacuum polarization tensor, fermionic self-energy and on-shell vertex correction with a hybrid regularization consisting of a higher covariant derivative regularization and dimensional continuation. The Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription is used to handle the spurious light-cone singularity in the gauge field propagator. We then perform the finite renormalization to define the quantum theory. The generation of the parity-even Maxwell term and the arising…
We find the inconsistency of dimensional reduction and naive dimensional regularization in their applications to Chern-Simons type gauge theories. Further we adopt a consistent dimensional regularization to investigate the quantum correction to non-Abelian Chern-Simons term coupled with fermionic matter. Contrary to previous results, we find that not only the Chern-Simons coefficient receives quantum correction from spinor fields, but the spinor field also gets a finite quantum correction.
The theory of a spinor field interacting with a pure Chern-Simons gauge field in 2+1 dimensions is quantized. Dynamical and nondynamical variables are separated in a gauge-independent way. After the nondynamical variables are dropped, this theory reduces to a pure spinor field theory with nonlocal interaction. Several two-body scattering processes are studied and the cross sections are obtained in explicitly Lorentz invariant forms.
We discuss the canonical quantization of Chern-Simons theory in $2+1$ dimensions, minimally coupled to a Dirac spinor field, first in the temporal gauge and then in the Coulomb gauge. In our temporal gauge formulation, Gauss's law and the gauge condition, $A_0 = 0$, are implemented by embedding the formulation in an appropriate physical subspace. We construct a Fock space of charged particle states that satisfy Gauss's law, and show that they obey fermion, not fractional statistics. The gauge-invariant spinor field that creates these charged states from the vacuum obeys the anticommutation rul…
The three dimensional abelian fermionic determinant of a two component massive spinor in flat euclidean space-time is resetted to a pure Chern-Simons action through a nonlinear redefinition of the gauge field.
We study three-dimensional non-linear models of vector and vector-spinor Goldstone fields associated with the spontaneous breaking of certain higher-spin counterparts of supersymmetry whose Lagrangians are of a Volkov-Akulov type. Goldstone fields in these models transform non-linearly under the spontaneously broken rigid symmetries. We find that the leading term in the action of the vector Goldstone model is the Abelian Chern-Simons action whose gauge symmetry is broken by a quartic term. As a result, the model has a propagating degree of freedom which, in a decoupling limit, is a quartic Gal…
The four dimensional Lorentz-breaking finite and determined Chern-Simons like action is generated as a one loop perturbative correction via an appropriate Lorentz-breaking coupling of the gauge field with the spinor field. Unlike the known schemes of calculations, within this scheme this term is found to be regularization independent.
We demonstrate generation of the two-dimensional Chern-Simons-like Lorentz-breaking action via an appropriate Lorentz-breaking coupling of scalar and spinor fields at zero as well as at the finite temperature and via the noncommutative fields method and study the dispersion relations corresponding to this action.
We quantize Quantum Electrodynamics in $2+1$ dimensions coupled to a Chern-Simons (CS) term and a charged spinor field, in covariant gauges and in the Coulomb gauge. The resulting Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) theory describes charged fermions interacting with each other and with topologically massive propagating photons. We impose Gauss's law and the gauge conditions and investigate their effect on the dynamics and on the statistics of $n$-particle states. We construct charged spinor states that obey Gauss's law and the gauge conditions, and transform the theory to representations in which these…
Starting from the generating functional of the theory of relativistic spinors in 2+1 dimensions interacting through the pure Chern-Simons gauge field, the S-matrix is constructed and seen to be formally the same as that of spinor quantum electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions with Feynman diagrams having external photon lines excluded, and with the propagator of the topological Chern-Simons photon substituted for the Maxwell photon propagator. It is shown that the absence of real topological photons in the complete set of vector states of the total Hilbert space leads in a given order of perturbati…
By performing the canonical quantization of the Abelian Chern-Simons model on the light-front (as suggested by Dirac), we clarify some controversies appearing in recent papers that discuss the relation between the existence of excitations carrying fractional spin and statistics (anyons) and this model. Properties of the Chern-Simons model on the light-front are investigated in detail, following the Dirac method for constrained dynamical systems, both for a coupled complex scalar field as well as for a spinor field.
A four-dimensional Lorentz-breaking non-Abelian Chern-Simons like action is generated as a one-loop perturbative correction via an appropriate Lorentz-breaking coupling of the non-Abelian gauge field to the spinor field. This term is shown to be regularization dependent but nevertheless it can be found unambiguously in different regularization schemes at zero and finite temperature.
For (2+1)-dimensional spacetimes with the spatial topology of a torus, the transformation between the Chern-Simons and ADM versions of quantum gravity is constructed explicitly, and the wave functions are compared. It is shown that Chern-Simons wave functions correspond to modular forms of weight 1/2, that is, spinors on the ADM moduli space, and that their evolution (in York's ``extrinsic time'' variable) is described by a Dirac equation. (This version replaces paper 9109006, which was garbled by my mailer.)
We reformulate the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson model using an N=8 superspace, thus making the full supersymmetry manifest. The formulation is based on appropriate "pure spinor wave functions" for the Chern-Simons and matter multiplets. The Lagrangian has an extremely simple structure, essentially containing a Chern-Simons-like term for the gauge field wave function and a minimally coupled matter wave function. No higher order interactions than cubic are present. The consistency of the setup relies on an interplay between the algebraic structures of the 3-algebra and of the pure spinors.
The non-relativistic Maxwell-Chern-Simons model recently introduced by Manton is shown to admit self-dual vortex solutions with non-zero electric field. The interrelated ``geometric'' and ``hidden'' symmetries are explained. The theory is also extended to (non-relativistic) spinors. A relativistic, self-dual model, whose non-relativistic limit is the Manton model is also presented. The relation to previous work is discussed.
We construct and study classical solutions in Chern-Simons supergravity based on the superalgebra sl(N|N-1). The algebra for the N=3 case is written down explicitly using the fact that it arises as the global part of the super conformal W_3 superalgebra. For this case we construct new classical solutions and study their supersymmetry. Using the algebra we write down the Killing spinor equations and explicitly construct the Killing spinor for conical defects and black holes in this theory. We show that for the general sl(N|N-1) theory the condition for the periodicity of the Killing spinor can …
We consider quantum electrodynamics with additional coupling of spinor fields to the space-time independent axial vector violating both Lorentz and CPT symmetries. The Fock-Schwinger proper time method is used to calculate the one-loop effective action up to the second order in the axial vector and to all orders in the space-time independent electromagnetic field strength. We find that the Chern-Simons term is not radiatively induced and that the effective action is CPT invariant in the given approximation.
We consider noncommutative gauge theory with Dirac or Majorana fermions in odd dimensional spacetime and compute the induced noncommutative Chern-Simons action generated at 1-loop. We observe that the Chern-Simons term induced by a Dirac fermion has a smooth limit when $þ---> 0$, but there is a finite jump for the Chern-Simons term induced by a Majorana spinor. The induced Chern-Simons action from a Majorana spinor is nonvanishing even in the $þ---> 0$ limit, a discontinuity that shares a similar characteristic as the UV/IR singularity discovered originally by Minwalla, Raamsdonk and Seiberg. …
We show that there are two supersymmetric completions of the three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory of level k with gauge group U(N)xU(N) coupled to four sets of massless scalars and spinors in the bi-fundamental representation, if we require Sp(2) global symmetry with the matter fields in the fundamental representation of SU(4). One is the N=6 superconformal theory recently studied in arXiv:0806.1218 [hep-th] and another is a new theory with N=1 superconformal symmetry. We conjecture that the N=1 theory is dual to M theory on AdS_4 x Squashed S^7/Z_k.
We investigate various aspects of higher-spin anti-de Sitter supergravity in three dimensions as described by Chern-Simons theory based on the finite-dimensional superalgebra sl(N |N - 1), with the particular case of N = 3 as our prime example. This class of theories serves as a natural supersymmetrization of the higher-spin gravity theory based on sl(N) Chern-Simons theories. We demonstrate explicitly that the asymptotic symmetry algebra contains the N = 2 superconformal algebra in each sector. The appropriate Killing spinor equations are derived and used to classify existing and new classica…
A Lagrangian description of a maximally supersymmetric conformal field theory in three dimensions was constructed recently by Bagger and Lambert (BL). The BL theory has SO(4) gauge symmetry and contains scalar and spinor fields that transform as 4-vectors. We verify that this theory has OSp(8|4) superconformal symmetry and that it is parity conserving despite the fact that it contains a Chern--Simons term. We describe several unsuccessful attempts to construct theories of this type for other gauge groups and representations. This experience leads us to conjecture the uniqueness of the BL theor…
The dimensional reduction of the three-dimensional fermion-Chern-Simons model (related to Hopf maps) of Adam et el. is shown to be equivalent to (i) either the static, fixed--chirality sector of our non-relativistic spinor-Chern-Simons model in 2+1 dimensions, (ii) or a particular Heisenberg ferromagnet in the plane.
We discuss the canonical quantization of Chern-Simons theory in $2+1$ dimensions, minimally coupled to a Dirac spinor field. Gauss's law and the gauge condition, $A_0 = 0$, are implemented by embedding the formulation in an appropriate physical subspace. We find two kinds of charged particle states in this model. One kind has a rotational anomaly in the form of arbitrary phases that develop in $2π$ rotations; the other kind rotates ``normally''---i.e., charged states only change sign in $2π$ rotations. The rotational anomaly has nothing to do with the implementation of Gauss's law. It is possi…
Noncommutative Chern-Simons gauge theory coupled to nonrelativistic scalars or spinors is shown to admit the ``exotic'' two-parameter-centrally extended Galilean symmetry, realized in a unique way consistent with the Seiberg-Witten map. Nontopological spinor vortices and topological external-field vortices are constructed by reducing the problem to previously solved self-dual equations.
The dynamical content of local AdS supergravity in five dimensions is discussed. The bosonic sector of the theory contains the vielbein ($e^{a}$), the spin connection ($ω^{ab}$) and internal SU(N) and U(1) gauge fields. The fermionic fields are complex Dirac spinors ($ψ^{i}$) in a vector representation of SU(N). All fields together form a connection 1-form in the superalgebra SU(2,2|N). For N=4, the symplectic matrix has maximal rank in a locally AdS background in which the dynamical degrees of freedom can be identified. The resulting efective theory have different numbers of bosonic and fermi…
Using the pure spinor formalism, a quantizable sigma model has been constructed for the superstring in an AdS_5 x S^5 background with manifest PSU(2,2|4) invariance. The PSU(2,2|4) metric g_{AB} has both vector components g_{ab} and spinor components g_{alpha beta}, and in the limit where the spinor components g_{alpha beta} are taken to infinity, the AdS_5 x S^5 sigma model reduces to the worldsheet action in a flat background. In this paper, we instead consider the limit where the vector components g_{ab} are taken to infinity. In this limit, the AdS_5 x S^5 sigma model simplifies to a topol…
The vortex solutions of various classical planar field theories with (Abelian) Chern-Simons term are reviewed. Relativistic vortices, put forward by Paul and Khare, arise when the Abelian Higgs model is augmented with the Chern-Simons term. Adding a suitable sixth-order potential and turning off the Maxwell term provides us with pure Chern-Simons theory with both topological and non-topological self-dual vortices, as found by Hong-Kim-Pac, and by Jackiw-Lee-Weinberg. The non-relativistic limit of the latter leads to non-topological Jackiw-Pi vortices with a pure fourth-order potential. Explici…
Chern-Simons formulation of 2+1 dimensional Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant is investigated when the spacetime has the topology $ R\times T^{2}$. The physical phase space is shown to be a direct product of two sub-phase spaces each of which is a non-Hausdorff manifold plus a set with nonzero codimensions. Spacetime geometrical interpretation of each point in the phase space is also given and we explain the 1 to 2 correspondence with the ADM formalism from the geometrical viewpoint. In quantizing this theory, we construct a "modified phase space" which is a cotangnt bundl…
We study supersymmetric vortex solutions in three-dimensional abelian gauged supergravity. First, we construct the general U(1)-gauged D=3, N=2 supergravity whose scalar sector is an arbitrary Kahler manifold with U(1) isometry. This construction clarifies the connection between local supersymmetry and the specific forms of some scalar potentials previously found in the literature -- in particular, it provides the locally supersymmetric embedding of the abelian Chern-Simons Higgs model. We show that the Killing spinor equations admit rotationally symmetric vortex solutions with asymptotically …
The standard formulation of a massive Abelian vector field in $2+1$ dimensions involves a Maxwell kinetic term plus a Chern-Simons mass term; in its place we consider a Chern-Simons kinetic term plus a Stuekelberg mass term. In this latter model, we still have a massive vector field, but now the interaction with a charged spinor field is renormalizable (as opposed to super renormalizable). By choosing an appropriate gauge fixing term, the Stuekelberg auxiliary scalar field decouples from the vector field. The one-loop spinor self energy is computed using operator regularization, a technique wh…
We discuss topologically massive QED --- the Abelian gauge theory in which (2+1)-dimensional QED with a Chern-Simons term is minimally coupled to a spinor field. We quantize the theory in covariant gauges, and construct a class of unitary transformations that enable us to embed the theory in a Fock space of states that implement Gauss's law. We show that when electron (and positron) creation and annihilation operators represent gauge-invariant charged particles that are surrounded by the electric and magnetic fields required by Gauss's law, the unitarity of the theory is manifest, and charged …
A new discretisation of a doubled, i.e. BF, version of the pure abelian Chern-Simons theory is presented. It reproduces the continuum expressions for the topological quantities of interest in the theory, namely the partition function and correlation function of Wilson loops. Similarities with free spinor field theory are discussed which are of interest in connection with lattice fermion doubling.
According to the AdS/CFT correspondence, the d=4, N=4 SU(N) SYM is dual to the Type IIB string theory compactified on AdS_5xS^5. A mechanism was proposed previously that the chiral anomaly of the gauge theory is accounted for to the leading order in N by the Chern-Simons action in the AdS_5 SUGRA. In this paper, we consider the SUGRA\string action at one loop and determine the quantum corrections to the Chern-Simons action. While gluon loops do not modify the coefficient of the Chern-Simons action, spinor loops shift the coefficient by an integer. We find that for finite N, the quantum correcti…
Chern-Simons AdS supergravity theories are gauge theories for the super-AdS group. These theories possess a fermionic symmetry which differs from standard supersymmetry. In this paper, we study five-dimensional Chern-Simons AdS supergravity in a Randall-Sundrum scenario with two Minkowski 3-branes. After making modifications to the D = 5 Chern-Simons AdS supergravity action and fermionic symmetry transformations, we obtain a Z_2-invariant total action S = \tilde{S}_bulk + S_brane and fermionic transformations \tildeδ_ε. While \tildeδ_ε\tilde{S}_bulk = 0, the fermionic symmetry is broken by S_b…
Most general third-order $3d$ linear gauge vector field theory is considered. The field equations involve, besides the mass, two dimensionless constant parameters. The theory admits two-parameter series of conserved tensors with the canonical energy-momentum being a particular representative of the series. For a certain range of the model parameters, the series of conserved tensors include bounded quantities. This makes the dynamics classically stable, though the canonical energy is unbounded in all the instances. The free third-order equations are shown to admit constrained multi-Hamiltonian …
We develop computational tools for calculating supersymmetric higher-order derivative corrections to eleven-dimensional supergravity using the action principle approach. We show that, provided the superspace Bianchi identities admit a perturbative solution in the derivative expansion, there are at least two independent superinvariants at the eight-derivative order of eleven-dimensional supergravity. Assuming the twelve-superforms associated to certain anomalous Chern-Simons terms are Weil-trivial, there will be a third independent superinvariant at this order. Under certain conditions, at leas…
The cvariant path integral quantization of the theory of the scalar and spinor particles interacting through the abelian and non-Abelian Chern-Simons gauge fields is carried out and is shown to be mathematically ill defined due to the absence of the transverse components of these gauge fields. This is remedied by the introduction of the Maxwell or the Maxwell-type (in the non-Abelian case)term which makes the theory superrenormalizable and guarantees its gauge-invariant regularization and renormalization. The generating functionals are constructed and shown to be formally the same as those of …
We study the gauge covariance of the fermion propagator in Maxwell-Chern-Simons planar quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) considering four-component spinors with parity-even and parity-odd mass terms both for fermions and photons. Starting with its tree level expression in the Landau gauge, we derive a non perturbative expression for this propagator in an arbitrary covariant gauge by means of its Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation (LKFT). We compare our findings in the weak coupling regime with the direct one-loop calculation of the two-point Green function and observe perfect agreement …
We study interactions between like charges in the noncommutative Maxwell-Chern-Simons electrodynamics {\it{minimally}} coupled to spinors or scalars. We demonstrate that the non-relativistic potential profiles, for only spatial noncommutativity, are nearly identical to the ones generated by a {\it{non-minimal}} Pauli magnetic coupling, originally introduced by Stern \cite{js}. Although the Pauli term has crucial roles in the context of physically relevant objects such as anyons and like-charge bound states (or "Cooper pairs"), its inception \cite{js} (see also \cite{others}) was ad-hoc and phe…
Gauge invariant topological interactions, such as the D=5 Chern-Simons terms, are required in models in extra dimensions that split anomaly free representations. The Chern-Simons term is necessary to maintain the overall anomaly cancellations of the theory, but it can have significant, observable, physical effects. The CS-term locks the KK-mode parity to the parity of space-time, leaving a single parity symmetry. It leads to new processes amongst KK-modes, eg, the decay of a KK-mode to a 2-body final state of KK-modes. A formalism for the effective interaction amongst KK-modes is constructed, …
We find the general fully non-linear solution of topologically massive supergravity admitting a Killing spinor. It is of plane-wave type, with a null Killing vector field. Conversely, we show that all solutions with a null Killing vector are supersymmetric for one or the other choice of sign for the Chern-Simons coupling constant μ. If μdoes not take the critical value μ=\pm 1, these solutions are asymptotically regular on a Poincaré patch, but do not admit a smooth global compactification with boundary S^1\times\R. In the critical case, the solutions have a logarithmic singularity on the boun…
We study the analytical structure of the fermion propagator in planar quantum electrodynamics coupled to a Chern-Simons term within a four-component spinor formalism. The dynamical generation of parity-preserving and parity-violating fermion mass terms is considered, through the solution of the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion propagator at leading order of the 1/N approximation in Landau gauge. The theory undergoes a first order phase transition toward chiral symmetry restoration when the Chern-Simons coefficient $θ$ reaches a critical value which depends upon the number…
Using Bloch-Nordsieck approximation fermion propagator in 3-dimensional gauge theory with topological mass is studied. Infrared divergence of Chern-Simon term is soft, which modifies anomalous dimension. In unquenched QCD with 2-component spinor anomalous dimension has fractional value, where order parmeter is divergent.
The possibility of a small modification of spinor Quantum Electro-Dynamics is reconsidered, in which Lorentz and CPT non-covariant kinetic terms for photons and fermions are present. The corresponding free field theory is carefully discussed. The finite one-loop parity-odd induced effective action is unambiguously calculated using the physical cutoff method, which manifestly encodes the maximal residual symmetry group allowed by the presence of the Lorentz and CPT breaking axial-vector. This very same induced effective action, which is different from those ones so far quoted in the Literature,…
