We present a general theoretical method to generate maximally entangled mixed states of a pair of photons initially prepared in the singlet polarization state. This method requires only local operations upon a single photon of the pair and exploits spatial degrees of freedom to induce decoherence. We report also experimental confirmation of these theoretical results.

In this paper, we study the superposition invariance of unitary operators and maximally entangled state respectively. Furthermore, we discuss the set of orthogonal maximally entangled states. We find that orthogonal basis of maximally entangled states can be divided into k subspaces. It is shown that some entanglement properties of superposed state in every subspace are invariant.

In this note, we prove that absolutely maximally entangled state for nine qubits does not exist. We construct a large family of Planar Maximally Entangled (PME) states which are a wider class of multi-partite entangled states than Absolutely Maximally Entangled (AME) states. These are states in which any half of the qudits are in a maximally mixed state, provided that they form a connected subset.
