We apply several methods related to the WKB approximation to study cosmological perturbations during inflation, obtaining the full power spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations to first and to second order in the slow-roll parameters. We compare our results with those derived by means of other methods, in particular the Green's function method, and find agreement for the slow-roll structure. Scalar wave propagation on the Schwarzschild background is also considered.
The old cosmological-constant (CC) problem indicates an inconsistency of the usual formulation of semiclassical gravity. The usual formulation of semiclassical gravity also seems to be inconsistent with the conventional interpretation of quantum mechanics based on the discontinuous wave-function collapse. By reformulating semiclassical gravity in terms of Bohmian deterministic particle trajectories, the resulting semiclassical theory avoids both the old CC problem and the discontinuous collapse problem of the usual semiclassical theory. The relevance to the new CC problem and to particle creat…
We present an improved formulation of 4-dimensional Lorentzian spinfoam quantum gravity with cosmological constant. The construction of spinfoam amplitudes uses the state-integral model of PSL(2,$\mathbb{C}$) Chern-Simons theory and the implementation of simplicity constraint. The formulation has 2 key features: (1) spinfoam amplitudes are all finite, and (2) With suitable boundary data, the semiclassical asymptotics of the vertex amplitude has two oscillatory terms, with phase plus or minus the 4-dimensional Lorentzian Regge action with cosmological constant for the constant curvature 4-simpl…
A semiclassical cosmological model is considered which consists of a closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker in the presence of a cosmological constant, which mimics the effect of an inflaton field, and a massless, non-conformally coupled quantum scalar field. We show that the back-reaction of the quantum field, which consists basically of a non local term due to gravitational particle creation and a noise term induced by the quantum fluctuations of the field, are able to drive the cosmological scale factor over the barrier of the classical potential so that if the universe starts near zero scale fa…
Environment interaction may induce stochastic semiclassical dynamics in open quantum systems. In the gravitational context, stress-energy fluctuations of quantum matter fields give rise to a stochastic behaviour in the spacetime geometry. Einstein-Langevin equation is a suitable tool to take these effects into account when addressing the back-reaction problem in semiclassical gravity. We analyze within this framework the generation of gravitational fluctuations during inflation, which are of great interest for large-scale structure formation in cosmology.
Moving from the consideration that matter fields must be treated in terms of their fundamental quantum counterparts, we show straightforward arguments, within the framework of ordinary quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, in order to convince readers that cosmological perturbations must be addressed in term of the semiclassical limit of the expectation value of quantum fields. We first take into account cosmological perturbations originated by a quantum scalar field, and then extend our treatment in order to account for the expectation values of bilinears of Dirac fermion fields. The la…
Semiclassical Einstein-Langevin equations for arbitrary small metric perturbations conformally coupled to a massless quantum scalar field in a spatially flat cosmological background are derived. Use is made of the fact that for this problem the in-in or closed time path effective action is simply related to the Feynman and Vernon influence functional which describes the effect of the ``environment'', the quantum field which is coarse grained here, on the ``system'', the gravitational field which is the field of interest. This leads to identify the dissipation and noise kernels in the in-in eff…
The semiclassical Einstein-Langevin equations which describe the dynamics of stochastic perturbations of the metric induced by quantum stress-energy fluctuations of matter fields in a given state are considered on the background of the ground state of semiclassical gravity, namely, Minkowski spacetime and a scalar field in its vacuum state. The relevant equations are explicitly derived for massless and massive fields arbitrarily coupled to the curvature. In doing so, some semiclassical results, such as the expectation value of the stress-energy tensor to linear order in the metric perturbation…
A correspondence between fluctuations of conformally invariant quantum fields and that of classical fields finally reducing to perfect fluid matter content is shown to exist. Previously a similar correspondence between the stress tensors was known and well established in the 70's. Using recent results obtained in semiclassical stochastic gravity regarding exact definition and significance given to quantum fluctuations of the stress tensor, we obtain this correspondence, which is fundamental to statistical analysis of systems in curved spacetime. This is of immense importance, in that the fluct…
Transition to the semiclassical behaviour and the decoherence process for inhomogeneous perturbations generated from the vacuum state during an inflationary stage in the early Universe are considered both in the Heisenberg and the Schrödinger representations to show explicitly that both approaches lead to the same prediction: the equivalence of these quantum perturbations to classical perturbations having stochastic Gaussian amplitudes and belonging to the quasi-isotropic mode. This equivalence and the decoherence are achieved once the exponentially small (in terms of the squeezing parameter $…
We consider the classical stochastic fluctuations of spacetime geometry induced by quantum fluctuations of massless non-conformal matter fields in the Early Universe. To this end, we supplement the stress-energy tensor of these fields with a stochastic part, which is computed along the lines of the Feynman-Vernon and Schwinger-Keldysh techniques; the Einstein equation is therefore upgraded to a so called Einstein-Langevin equation. We consider in some detail the conformal fluctuations of flat spacetime and the fluctuations of the scale factor in a simple cosmological modelintroduced by Hartle,…
Bianchi -I, -III, and FRW type models minimally coupled to a massive spatially homogeneous scalar field (i.e. a particle) are studied in the framework of semiclassical quantum gravity. In a first step we discuss the solutions of the corresponding equation for a Schrödinger particle propagating on a classical background. The back reaction of the Schrödinger particle on the classical metric is calculated by means of the Wigner function and by means of the expectation value of the energy-momentum-tensor of the field as a source. Both methods in general lead to different results.
A spatially flat Robertson-Walker spacetime driven by a cosmological constant is non-conformally coupled to a massless scalar field. The equations of semiclassical gravity are explicitly solved for this case, and a self-consistent de Sitter solution associated with the Bunch-Davies vacuum state is found (the effect of the quantum field is to shift slightly the effective cosmological constant). Furthermore, it is shown that the corrected de Sitter spacetime is stable under spatially-isotropic perturbations of the metric and the quantum state. These results are independent of the free renormaliz…
We study the solutions of the semiclassical Einstein equation in flat cosmological spacetimes driven by a massive conformally coupled scalar field. In particular, we show that it is possible to give initial conditions at finite time to get a state for the quantum field which gives finite expectation values for the stress-energy tensor. Furthermore, it is possible to control this expectation value by means of a global estimate on regular cosmological spacetimes. The obtained estimates permit to write a theorem about the existence and uniqueness of the local solutions encompassing both the space…
Hawking radiation as a quantum phenomenon is generally attributed to the existence of the event horizon of a black hole. However, we demonstrate in this paper that there is indeed ingoing Hawking-like radiation associated with apparent horizons of the first cosmological black hole solution in the framework of Scalar-Tensor-Vector Gravity (STVG) theory living in the Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background. Such radiation can be attributed also to the cosmological apparent horizon of the FLRW universe and even to the cosmological event horizon of de Sitter spacetime. We see how S…
In loop quantum cosmology, polymer quantization is applied to gravity and Schrodinger quantization to matter. This approach misses interesting cosmological dynamics coming from the polymer quantization of matter. We demonstrate this in semiclassical cosmology with a scalar field and pressureless dust: gravity is kept classical, dust is used to fix the time gauge, and polymer quantization effects are isolated in the scalar field. The resulting dynamics shows a period of inflation, both with and without a scalar potential, and the emergence of a classical universe at late times. Since gravity is…
Within a cosmological framework, we provide a Hamiltonian analysis of the Mixmaster Universe dynamics on the base of a standard Arnowitt-Deser-Misner approach, showing how the chaotic behavior characterizing the evolution of the system near the cosmological singularity can be obtained as the semiclassical limit of the canonical quantization of the model in the same dynamical representation. The relation between this intrinsic chaotic behavior and the indeterministic quantum dynamics is inferred through the coincidence between the microcanonical probability distribution and the semiclassical qu…
A correspondence between fluctuations of non-minimally coupled scalar fields and that of an effective fluid with heat flux and anisotropic stresses, is shown. Though the correspondence between respective stress tensors of scalar fields and fluids is known and widely used in literature, the fluctuations in the two cases still await a formal correspondence and are open to investigation in all details. Using results obtained in the newly established theory of semiclassical stochastic gravity which focuses on the fluctuations of the quantum stress tensor, we show new relations in this regard. This…
A semiclassical mechanism which suppresses the weak anisotropies of an inhomogeneous cosmological model is developed. In particular, a wave function of this Universe having a meaningful probabilistic interpretation is obtained that is in agreement with the Copenhagen School. It describes the evolution of the anisotropies with respect to the isotropic scale factor which is regarded as a semiclassical variable playing an observer-like role. Near the cosmological singularity the solution spreads over all values of the anisotropies while, when the Universe expands sufficiently, the closed Friedman…
We analyze the semiclassical stability of the Schwarzschild AdS black hole in the Euclidean partition function approach. We perform this computation in the large $D$ limit and focus on scalar perturbations. We obtain the equations for non-spherically symmetric scalar perturbations in a simple form. For a class of perturbations stability is demonstrated by the S-deformation method. For some other classes we rule out unstable modes of $\mathcal{O}(D^2)$. We also analyze the spherically symmetric perturbations and demonstrate the appearance of an unstable mode for small black holes in the large $…
The possible cosmological effects of primordial fluctuation corrections to the evolution equation of matter obtained from the Wheeler--De Witt equation are explored. In particular, both the metric and a scalar matter field are expanded around their homogeneous values and the corrections induced on the scalar field fluctuation spectrum are perturbatively estimated. Finally, results of a preliminary numerical simulation to investigate the effects on large--scale structure formation are presented.
We develop a comprehensive framework in which the existence of solutions to the semiclassical Einstein equation (SCE) in cosmological spacetimes is shown. Different from previous work on this subject, we do not restrict to the conformally coupled scalar field and we admit the full renormalization freedom. Based on a regularization procedure, which utilizes homogeneous distributions and is equivalent to Hadamard point-splitting, we obtain a reformulation of the evolution of the quantum state as an infinite-dimensional dynamical system with mathematical features that are distinct from the standa…
In the mathematically rigorous analysis of semiclassical Einstein's equations, the renormalisation of the stress-energy tensor plays a crucial role. We address such a topic in the case of a scalar field with both arbitrary mass and coupling with gravity in the hypothesis that the underlying algebraic quantum state is of Hadamard type. Particularly, if we focus on highly symmetric solutions of the semiclassical Einstein's equations, the envisaged method displays a de Sitter type behaviour even without an a priori introduced cosmological constant. As a further novel result we shall show that the…
In the two previous papers of this series we defined a new combinatorical approach to quantum gravity, Algebraic Quantum Gravity (AQG). We showed that AQG reproduces the correct infinitesimal dynamics in the semiclassical limit, provided one incorrectly substitutes the non -- Abelean group SU(2) by the Abelean group $U(1)^3$ in the calculations. The mere reason why that substitution was performed at all is that in the non -- Abelean case the volume operator, pivotal for the definition of the dynamics, is not diagonisable by analytical methods. This, in contrast to the Abelean case, so far proh…
Semiclassical perturbations to the Reissner-Nordstrom metric caused by the presence of a quantized massive scalar field with arbitrary curvature coupling are found to first order in ε= \hbar/M^2. The DeWitt-Schwinger approximation is used to determine the vacuum stress-energy tensor of the massive scalar field. When the semiclassical perturbation are taken into account, we find extreme black holes will have a charge-to-mass ratio that exceeds unity, as measured at infinity. The effects of the perturbations on the black hole temperature (surface gravity) are studied in detail, with particular e…
We discuss the stability of semiclassical gravity solutions with respect to small quantum corrections by considering the quantum fluctuations of the metric perturbations around the semiclassical solution. We call the attention to the role played by the symmetrized two-point quantum correlation function for the metric perturbations, which can be naturally decomposed into two separate contributions: intrinsic and induced fluctuations. We show that traditional criteria on the stability of semiclassical gravity are incomplete because these criteria based on the linearized semiclassical Einstein eq…
We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions of the semiclassical Einstein equation in flat cosmological spacetimes driven by a quantum massive scalar field with arbitrary coupling to the scalar curvature. In the semiclassical approximation, the backreaction of matter to curvature is taken into account by equating the Einstein tensor to the expectation values of the stress-energy tensor in a suitable state. We impose initial conditions for the scale factor at finite time and we show that a regular state for the quantum matter compatible with these initial conditions can be chosen. Contributi…
This article presents numerical work on a special case of the cosmological semiclassical Einstein equation (SCE). The SCE describes the interaction of relativistic quantum matter by the expected value of the renormalized stress-energy tensor of a quantum field with classical gravity. Here we consider a free massless scalar field with general (not necessarily conformal) coupling to curvature. In a cosmological scenario with flat spatial sections for special choices of the initial conditions, we observe a separation of the dynamics of the quantum degrees of freedom from the dynamics of the scale…
Brane-world models provide a phenomenology that allows us to explore the cosmological consequences of some M theory ideas, and at the same time to use precision cosmology as a test of these ideas. In order to achieve this, we need to understand how brane-world gravity affects cosmological dynamics and perturbations. This introductory review describes the key features of cosmological perturbations in a brane-world universe.
In this review, we investigate the question of backreaction in different approaches to cosmological perturbation theory, and with a special focus on quantum theoretical aspects. By backreaction, we refer here to the effects of matter field or cosmological inhomogeneities on the homogeneous dynamical background degrees of freedom of cosmology. We begin with an overview of classical cosmological backreaction which is ideally suited for physical situations in the late time Universe. We then proceed backwards in time, considering semiclassical approaches such as semiclassical or stochastic (semicl…
The subject of this thesis is the coupling of quantum fields to a classical gravitational background in a semiclassical fashion. It contains a thorough introduction into quantum field theory on curved spacetime with a focus on the stress-energy tensor and the semiclassical Einstein equation. Basic notions of differential geometry, topology, functional and microlocal analysis, causality and general relativity will be summarised, and the algebraic approach to QFT on curved spacetime will be reviewed. Apart from these foundations, the original research of the author and his collaborators will be …
In this paper we shall discuss the backreaction of a massive quantum scalar field on the curvature, the latter treated as a classical field. Furthermore, we shall deal with this problem in the realm of cosmological spacetimes by analyzing the Einstein equations in a semiclassical fashion. More precisely, we shall show that, at least on small intervals of time, solutions for this interacting system exist. This result will be achieved providing an iteration scheme and showing that the series, obtained starting from the massless solution, converges in the appropriate Banach space. The quantum sta…
We study the expectation value of a nonplanar Wilson graph operator in SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory on $S^3$. In particular we analyze its asymptotic behaviour in the double-scaling limit in which both the representation labels and the Chern-Simons coupling are taken to be large, but with fixed ratio. When the Wilson graph operator has a specific form, motivated by loop quantum gravity, the critical point equations obtained in this double-scaling limit describe a very specific class of flat connection on the graph complement manifold. We find that flat connections in this class are in correspon…
The existence of cosmological perturbations of wavelength larger than the Hubble radius is a generic prediction of the inflationary paradigm. We provide the derivation beyond perturbation theory of a conserved quantity which generalizes the linear comoving curvature perturbation. As a by-product, we show that super-Hubble-radius (super-Hubble) perturbations have no physical influence on local observables e.g., the local expansion rate) if cosmological perturbations are of the adiabatic type.
We consider a simple cosmological model in order to show the importance of unstable particle creation for the validity of the semiclassical approximation. Using the mathematical structure of rigged Hilbert spaces we show that particle creation is the seed of decoherence which enables the quantum to classical transition.
A simple model of spacetime foam, made by $N$ wormholes in a semiclassical approximation, is taken under examination. The Casimir-like energy of the quantum fluctuation of such a model and its probability of being realized are computed. Implications on the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the cosmological constant are considered.
We study the influence of reheating on super-horizon density perturbations and gravitational waves. We correct wrong claims [L. P. Grishchuk Phys. Rev. D 50, 7154 (1994) and gr-qc/9801011] about the joining of perturbations at cosmological transitions and about the quantization of cosmological perturbations.
We address the question of cosmological perturbations in the context of brane cosmology, where our Universe is a three-brane where matter is confined, whereas gravity lives in a higher dimensional spacetime. The equations governing the bulk perturbations are computed in the case of a general warped universe. The results are then specialized to the case of a five-dimensional spacetime, scenario which has recently attracted a lot of attention. In this context, we decompose the perturbations into `scalar', `vector' and `tensor' modes, which are familiar in the standard theory of cosmological pert…
Perturbation theory within Newtonian approximation is presented for cosmological models with varying physical constants. Analytical solutions for perturbations dynamics are obtained for each Gurzadyan-Xue model with pressureless matter and radiation. We found that perturbations grow during entire expansion within GX models, including curvature- and vacuum-dominated stage when they cease to grow in the standard cosmological model.
The linearization of semiclassical theories of gravity is investigated in a toy model, consisting of a quantum scalar field in interaction with a second classical scalar field which plays the role of a classical background. This toy model mimics also the evolution induced by semiclassical Einstein equations, such as the one which describes the early universe in the cosmological case. The equations governing the dynamics of linear perturbations around simple exact solutions of this toy model are analyzed by constructing the corresponding retarded fundamental solutions, and by discussing the cor…
We propose a criterion for the validity of semiclassical gravity (SCG) which is based on the stability of the solutions of SCG with respect to quantum metric fluctuations. We pay special attention to the two-point quantum correlation functions for the metric perturbations, which contain both intrinsic and induced fluctuations. These fluctuations can be described by the Einstein-Langevin equation obtained in the framework of stochastic gravity. Specifically, the Einstein-Langevin equation yields stochastic correlation functions for the metric perturbations which agree, to leading order in the l…
Semiclassical techniques have proven to be a very powerful method to extract physical effects from different quantum theories. Therefore, it is expected that in the near future they will play a very prominent role in the context of quantum gravity. In this work we develop systematic tools to derive semiclassical approximations for any quantum theory with one degree of freedom. In our approach, the wave function is decomposed in terms of an infinite set of moments, which encode the complete quantum information of the system. Semiclassical regimes can then be properly described by truncation of …
First-order semiclassical perturbations to the Schwarzschild black hole geometry are studied within the black hole interior. The source of the perturbations is taken to be the vacuum stress-energy of quantized scalar, spinor, and vector fields, evaluated using analytic approximations developed by Page and others (for massless fields) and the DeWitt-Schwinger approximation (for massive fields). Viewing the interior as an anisotropic collapsing cosmology, we find that minimally or conformally coupled scalar fields, and spinor fields, decrease the anisotropy as the singularity is approached, whil…
Using the existence of a covariant conserved quantity on large perturbation scales in a spatially flat perfect fluid or scalar field universe, we present a general formula for gauge-invariantly defined comoving energy density perturbations which encodes the entire linear perturbation dynamics in a closed time integral. On this basis we discuss perturbation modes in different cosmological epochs.
We study the pure and thermal states of quantized scalar and tensor perturbations in various epochs of Universe evolution. We calculate the density matrix of non-relativistic particles in an environment of these perturbations. We show that particle's motion can be described by a stochastic equation with a noise coming from the cosmological environment. We investigate the squeezing of Gaussian wave packets in different epochs and its impact upon the noise of quantized cosmological perturbations.
All regular and singular cosmological perturbations in a radiation dominated Einstein-de Sitter Universe with collisionless particles can be found by a generalized power series ansatz. Talk given at "Birth of the Universe and Fundamental Physics", May 1994 (Rome).
A theory of quantum-mechanical generation of cosmological perturbations is considered. The conclusion of this study is that if the large-angular-scale anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background radiation is caused by the long-wavelength cosmological perturbations of quantum mechanical origin, they are, most likely, gravitational waves, rather than density perturbations or rotational perturbations. Some disagreements with previous publications are clarified. This contribution to the Proceedings is based on Reference~[34].
In this paper we present a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological model conformally coupled to a massive scalar field where the WKB approximation fails to reproduce the exact solution to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for large Universes. The breakdown of the WKB approximation follows the same pattern than in semiclassical physics of chaotic systems, and it is associated to the development of small scale structure in the wave function. This result puts in doubt the ``WKB interpretation'' of Quantum Cosmology.
We present a method for constructing gauge-invariant cosmological perturbations which are gauge-invariant up to second order. As an example we give the gauge-invariant definition of the second-order curvature perturbation on uniform density hypersurfaces. Using only the energy conservation equation we show that this curvature perturbation is conserved at second order on large scales for adiabatic perturbations.
The evolution of the cosmological perturbation during the oscillatory stage of the scalar field is investigated. For the power law potential of the inflaton field, the evolution equation of the Mukhanov's gauge invariant variable is reduced to the Mathieu equation and the density perturbation grows by the parametric resonance.
We reply to L.P. Grishchuk's comment (gr-qc/9801011) on our paper ``The Influence of Cosmological Transitions on the Evolution of Density Perturbations'' (Phys. Rev. D 57, 3302, 1998). We show that his points of criticism are not correct.
Cosmological perturbations of FRW solutions in ghost free massive bigravity, including also a second matter sector, are studied in detail. At early time, we find that sub horizon exponential instabilities are unavoidable and they lead to a premature departure from the perturbative regime of cosmological perturbations.
