A dynamical system on the total space of the fibre bundle of second order accelerations, $T^2M$, is defined as a third order vector field $S$ on $T^2M$, called semispray, which is mapped by the second order tangent structure into one of the Liouville vector field. For a regular Lagrangian of second order we prove that this semispray is uniquely determined by two associated Cartan-Poincaré one-forms. To study the geometry of this semispray we construct a nonlinear connection, which is a Lagrangian subbundle for the presymplectic structure. Using this semispray and the associated nonlinear connection we define covariant derivatives of first and second order. With respect to this, the second order dynamical derivative of the Lagrangian metric tensor vanishes.
Following earlier work of Loftin-McIntosh, we study minimal Lagrangian immersions of the universal cover of a closed surface (of genus at least 2) into CH2, with prescribed data of a conformal structure plus a holomorphic cubic differential. We show existence and non-uniqueness of such minimal Lagrangian immersions. We also establish the surface area with respect to the induced metric as a Weil-Petersson potential function for the space of holomorphic cubic differentials on the Riemann surface.
This paper is devoted to apply the equivariant moving frame method to study the local equivalence problem of third order ordinarily differential equation under the pseudo-group of fiber preserving transformations.
In this paper, we review or introduce several differential structures on manifolds in the general setting of real and complex differential geometry, and apply this study to Teichmüller theory. We focus on bi-Lagrangian i.e. para-Kähler structures, which consist of a symplectic form and a pair of transverse Lagrangian foliations. We prove in particular that the complexification of a real-analytic Kähler manifold has a natural complex bi-Lagrangian structure. We then specialize to moduli spaces of geometric structures on closed surfaces, and show that old and new geometric features of these spac…
We study differential invariants of the third order linear differential operators and use them to find conditions for equivalence of differential operators acting in line bundles on two dimensional manifolds with respect to groups of authomorphisms.
This article is dedicated to solve the equivalence problem for two third order differential operators on the line under general fiber--preserving transformation using the Cartan method of equivalence. We will do three versions of the equivalence problems: first via the direct equivalence problem, second equivalence problem is to determine conditions on two differential operators such that there exists a fiber-preserving transformations mapping one to the other according to gauge equivalence.
We give a description of the field of rational natural differential invariants for a class of nonlinear differential operators of the third order on a two dimensional manifold and show their application to the equivalence problem of such operators.
Building on the Utiyama principle we formulate an approach to Lagrangian field theory in which exterior covariant differentials of vector-valued forms replace partial derivatives, in the sense that they take up the role played by the latter in the usual jet bundle formulation. Actually a natural Lagrangian can be written as a density on a suitable "covariant prolongation bundle"; the related momenta turn out to be natural vector-valued forms, and the field equations can be expressed in terms of covariant exterior differentials of the momenta. Currents and energy-tensors naturally also fit into…
The differential system for minimal Lagrangian surfaces in a $2_{\mathbb{C}}$-dimensional, non-flat, complex space form is an elliptic system defined on the bundle of oriented Lagrangian planes. This is a 6-symmetric space associated with the Lie group SL(3,$\mathbb{C}$), and the minimal Lagrangian surfaces arise as the primitive maps. Utilizing this property, we derive the differential algebraic inductive formulas for a pair of loop algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(3,\mathbb{C})[[λ]]$-valued canonical formal Killing fields. As a result, we give a complete classification of the (infinite sequence of) Ja…
In this paper, we discuss the Lagrangian angles of a family of Lagrangian fibrations moved under mean curvature flow. In the case $n=1$, the angle function is shown to satisfy a degenerated partial differential equation. We prove that any smooth solution to the equation also corresponds to smooth foliation of curves under mean curvature flow.
We construct, for a homogeneous Lagrangian of arbitrary order in two independent variables, a differential 2-form with the property that it is closed precisely when the Lagrangian is null. This is similar to the property of the `fundamental Lepage equivalent' associated with first-order Lagrangians defined on jets of sections of a fibred manifold.
Conformal geodesics are solutions to a system of third order of equations, which makes a Lagrangian formulation problematic. We show how enlarging the class of allowed variations leads to a variational formulation for this system with a third--order conformally invariant Lagrangian. We also discuss the conformally invariant system of fourth order ODEs arising from this Lagrangian, and show that some of its integral curves are spirals.
One applies the symmetry group theory for study the partial differential equations of Tzitzeica surfaces theory. One finds infinitesimal symmetries, Lagrangians and a new solution of Titzeica equation.
We uncover the lowest order differential invariants of Lagrangian submanifolds under affine symplectic maps, and find out what happens when they are constant.
We discuss contact invariant structures on the space of solutions of a third-order ordinary differential equation. Associated to any third-order differential equation modulo contact transformations, Chern introduced a degenerate conformal Lorentzian metric on the space of 2-jets of functions of one variable. When the Wuenschmann invariant vanishes, the degenerate metric descends to a proper conformal Lorentzian metric on the space of solutions. In the general case, when the Wuenschmann invariant is not zero, we define the notion of a causal geometry, and show that the space of solutions suppor…
The conservation laws of the third order quasilinear scalar evolution equations are considered via differential system and characteristic cohomology. We find a subspace of 2 forms in the infinite prolonged space in which every conservation law has a unique representative. The structure of this subspace naturally gives rise to the convenient notion of the weight of a conservation law, and we also compute a universal integrability condition to admit any higher order (weight) conservation law. As an example, the differential system descrbing the flow of the curve in the plane by the derivative of…
Yang-Mills theory is growing at the interface between high energy physics and mathematics. It is well known that Yang-Mills theory and Gauge theory in general had a profound impact on the development of modern differential and algebraic geometry. One could quote Donaldson invariants in four dimensional differential topology, Hitchin Kobayashi conjecture relating the existence of Hermitian-Einstein metric on holomorphic bundles over Kähler manifolds and Mumford stability in complex geometry or also Gromov Witten invariants in symplectic geometry...etc. While the influence of Gauge theory in geo…
We use an elliptic differential equation of Tzitzeica type to construct a minimal Lagrangian surface in CH2 from the data of a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface and a small holomorphic cubic differential. The minimal Lagrangian surface is invariant under an SU(2,1) action of the fundamental group. We further parameterise a neighborhood of the R-Fuchsian representations in the representation space by pairs consisting of a point in Teichmuller space and a small cubic differential. By constructing a fundamental domain, we show these representations are complex-hyperbolic quasi-Fuchsian, thus rec…
A general, consistent and complete framework for geometrical formulation of mechanical systems is proposed, based on certain structures on affine bundles (affgebroids) that generalize Lie algebras and Lie algebroids. This scheme covers and unifies various geometrical approaches to mechanics in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian pictures, including time-dependent lagrangians and hamiltonians. In our approach, lagrangians and hamiltonians are, in general, sections of certain $\R$-principal bundles, and the solutions of analogs of Euler-Lagrange equations are curves in certain affine bundles. The cor…
Following an earlier paper on the differential-geometric structure of the moduli space of special Lagrangian submanifolds in a Calabi-Yau manifold, we follow an analogous approach for compact complex Lagrangian submanifolds of a (Kählerian) complex symplectic manifold. The natural geometric structure on the moduli space is a special Kähler metric, but we offer a different point of view on the local differential geometry of these, based on the structure of a submanifold of $V\times V$ (where $V$ is a symplectic vector space) which is Lagrangian with respect to two constant symplectic forms. As …
This is the third paper in a series of papers studying intersection Floer theory of Lagrangians in the complement of a smooth divisor. We complete the construction of Floer homology for such Lagrangians.
The linearization problem by use of the Cartan equivalence method for scalar third-order ODEs via point transformations was solved partially in [1,2]. In order to solve this problem completely, the Cartan equivalence method is applied to provide an invariant characterization of the linearizable third-order ordinary differential equation u'''=f(x,u,u',u'') which admits a four-dimensional point symmetry Lie algebra. The invariant characterization is given in terms of the function f in a compact form. A simple procedure to construct the equivalent canonical form by use of an obtained invariant is…
We discuss the local differential geometry of convex affine spheres in $\re^3$ and of minimal Lagrangian surfaces in Hermitian symmetric spaces. In each case, there is a natural metric and cubic differential holomorphic with respect to the induced conformal structure: these data come from the Blaschke metric and Pick form for the affine spheres and from the induced metric and second fundamental form for the minimal Lagrangian surfaces. The local geometry, at least for main cases of interest, induces a natural frame whose structure equations arise from the affine Toda system for $\mathfrak a^{(…
The Lagrangian formalism on a arbitrary non-fibrating manifold is considered. The kinematical description of this generic situation is based on the concept of (higher-order) Grassmann manifolds which is the factorization of the regular velocity manifold to the action of the differential group. Here we introduce in this context the basic concepts of the Lagrangian formalism as Lagrange, Euler-Lagrange and Helmholtz-Sonin forms. These objects come in pairs, namely we have homogeneous objects (defined on the regular velocity manifold) and non-homogeneous objects (defined on the Grassmann manifold…
We use methods from exterior differential systems (EDS) to develop a geometric theory of scalar, first-order Lagrangian functionals and their associated Euler-Lagrange PDEs, subject to contact transformations. The first chapter contains an introduction of the classical Poincare-Cartan form in the context of EDS, followed by proofs of classical results, including a solution to the relevant inverse problem, Noether's theorem on symmetries and conservation laws, and several aspects of minimal hypersurfaces. In the second chapter, the equivalence problem for Poincare-Cartan forms is solved, giving…
Using supervector fields and graded forms along a morphism, we study the geometry of ordinary differential superequations, extend the formalism of higher order Lagrangian mechanics to the graded context and prove a generalization of Noether's theorem.
The Lagrangian representation of multi-Hamiltonian PDEs has been introduced by Y. Nutku and one of us (MVP). In this paper we focus on systems which are (at least) bi-Hamiltonian by a pair $A_1$, $A_2$, where $A_1$ is a hydrodynamic-type Hamiltonian operator. We prove that finding the Lagrangian representation is equivalent to finding a generalized vector field $τ$ such that $A_2=L_τA_1$. We use this result in order to find the Lagrangian representation when $A_2$ is a homogeneous third-order Hamiltonian operator, although the method that we use can be applied to any other homogeneous Hamilton…
