We present results of Raman scattering experiments on tetragonal ${\rm (Y_{1-y}Ca_{y})Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x}}$ for doping levels $p(x,y)$ between 0 and 0.07 holes/CuO$_2$. Below the onset of superconductivity at $p_{\rm sc1} \approx 0.06$, we find evidence of a diagonal superstructure. At $p_{\rm sc1}$, lattice and electron dynamics change discontinuously with the charge and spin properties being renormalized at all energy scales. The results indicate that charge ordering is intimately related to the transition at $p_{\rm sc1}$ and that the maximal transition temperature to superconductivity at optimal doping $T_{c}^{\rm max}$ depends on the type of ordering at $p>p_{\rm sc1}$.
Transport measurements in ramp-type junctions of $YBa_2Cu_3O_y-SrRuO_3-YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ with $T_c$ values of either 80-90 K or 60-70 K are reported. In both type of junctions but without a barrier ("shorts"), the supercurrent densities at 4.2 K reached 7.5 and 3.5 MA/cm$^2$, respectively, indicating the high quality of the fabrication process. Plots of the critical current versus thickness of the ferromagnetic barrier at 4.2 K show exponential decays with decay lengths of 1.1 nm for the 90 K phase and 1.4 nm for the 60 K phase, which are much shorter than the relevant coherence lengths $ξ_F\sim 5…
We report the infrared (IR) response of Cu-O chains in the high-$T_{c}$ superconductor YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ over the doping range spanning $% y=6.28-6.75$. We find evidence for a power law scaling at mid-IR frequencies consistent with predictions for Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, thus supporting the notion of one-dimensional transport in the chains. We analyze the role of coupling to the CuO$_{2}$ planes in establishing metallicity and superconductivity in disordered chain fragments.
In a recent Comment [arXiv:0711.4654], Y. Ando raises two valid issues in relation to our low-temperature heat transport study of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ across the insulator-to-superconductor boundary: 1) the possible role of twin boundaries in scattering phonons; 2) the best fitting procedure for extracting a fermionic (linear) term from the data. In this Reply, we show that both concerns can be laid to rest by 1) using new data from a tetragonal (twin-free) sample, and 2) using an analysis that does not involve any fitting.
We report the observation of two dielectric transitions at 110K and 60K in the microwave response of non-superconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.0} crystals. The transitions are characterized by a change in polarizability and presence of loss peaks, associated with overdamped dielectric modes. An explanation is presented in terms of changes in polarizability of the apical O atoms in the Ba-O layer, affected by lattice softening at 110K, due to change in buckling of the Cu-O layer. The onset of another mode at 60K strongly suggests an additional local lattice change at this temperature. Thus microwav…
We investigate the pressure and temperature dependence of the lattice dynamics of the underdoped, stoichiometric, high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu4O8 by means of Raman spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. This system undergoes a reversible pressure-induced structural phase transition around 10 GPa to a collapsed orthorhombic structure, that is well reproduced by the calculation. The coupling of the B1g-like buckling phonon mode to the electronic continuum is used to probe superconductivity. In the low pressure phase, self-energy effects through the superconducting transition renormal…
Superconductivity often emerges in the proximity of, or in competition with, symmetry breaking ground states such as antiferromagnetism or charge density waves (CDW)1-5. A number of materials in the cuprate family, which includes the high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductors, show spin and charge density wave order5-7. Thus a fundamental question is to what extent these ordered states exist for compositions close to optimal for superconductivity. Here we use high-energy x-ray diffraction to show that a CDW develops at zero field in the normal state of superconducting YBa2Cu3O6.67 (…
We report measurements of the temperature dependent components of the magnetic penetration depth λ(T) in single crystal samples of YBa_2Cu_4O_8 using a radio frequency tunnel diode oscillator technique. We observe a downturn in λ(T) at low temperatures for currents flowing along the b and c axes but not along the a axis. The downturn in λ_b is suppressed by a small dc field of ~0.25 T. This and the zero field anisotropy of λ(T) likely result from proximity induced superconducting on the CuO chains, however we also discuss the possibility that a significant part of the anisotropy might originat…
The charge density wave in the high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) is now known to have two different ordering tendencies differentiated by their $c$-axis correlations. These correspond to ferro- (F-CDW) and antiferro- (AF-CDW) couplings between CDW in neighbouring CuO$_2$ bilayers. This discovery has prompted a number of fundamental questions. For example, how does superconductivity adjust to two competing orders and are either of these orders responsible for the electronic reconstruction? Here we use high-energy x-ray diffraction to study YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$ as …
We measure the nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) signal on the Zn site in nearly optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.92}$, when Cu is substituted by 3\% of isotopically pure $^{67}$Zn. We observe that Zn creates large insulating islands, confirming two earlier conjectures: that doping provokes an orbital transition in the CuO$_2$ plane, which is locally reversed by Zn substitution, and that the islands are antiferromagnetic. Also, we find that the Zn impurity locally induces a breaking of the D$_4$ symmetry. Cluster and DFT calculations show that the D$_4$ symmetry breaking is due to the same …
Electronic charges introduced in copper-oxide planes generate high-transition temperature superconductivity but, under special circumstances, they can also order into filaments called stripes. Whether an underlying tendency of charges to order is present in all cuprates and whether this has any relationship with superconductivity are, however, two highly controversial issues. In order to uncover underlying electronic orders, magnetic fields strong enough to destabilise superconductivity can be used. Such experiments, including quantum oscillations in YBa2Cu3Oy (a notoriously clean cuprate wher…
Polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering has been used to determine the effect of superconductivity on the magnetic excitation spectra of YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6.5} (T_c = 52K) and YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6.7} (T_c = 67K). Pronounced enhancements of the spectral weight centered around 25 meV and 33 meV, respectively, are observed below T_c in both crystals, compensated predominantly by a loss of spectral weight at higher energies. The data provide important clues to the origin of the 40 meV magnetic resonance peak in YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7.
We study the electronic structure near impurities in the one-dimensional chains of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. Assuming chain superconductivity below $T_c$ due to a proximity coupling, we show that only a magnetic impurity induces resonance states in the local density of states. Its spatial structure reflects the particle-hole nature of chain superconductivity and thus distinguishes it from other broken symmetry phases. For a sufficiently large scattering strength, or due to interference effects arising from a second impurity, the chains undergo a quantum phase transition to a polarized state.
We present a study of reentrant behavior in a composite formed by a Hight-T$ _{c} $ superconductor, YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$ _{7-δ}$ and Ammonium Terbium Oxalate, Tb(H$_2$O)(C$ _2$O$_4$)$_2$ $\cdot $NH$_4$. The composite has a transition temperature about 92 K, and it presents a reentrant behaviour resulting of the coexistence between superconductivity and magnetism. According to this study the values and shape of the critical magnetic fields were dramatically reduced in a similar form as in other known reentrant superconductors.
The effects of chain disorder on superconductivity in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} are discussed within the context of a proximity model. Chain disorder causes both pair-breaking and localization. The hybridization of chain and plane wavefunctions reduces the importance of localization, so that the transport anisotropy remains large in the presence of a finite fraction $δ$ of oxygen vacancies. Penetration depth and specific heat measurements probe the pair-breaking effects of chain disorder, and are discussed in detail at the level of the self-consistent T-matrix approximation. Quantitative agreement with…
The oxygen-order dependent emergence of superconductivity in YBa2Cu3O6+x is studied, for the first time in a comparative way, on pair samples having the same oxygen content and thermal history, but different Cu(1)Ox chain arrangements deriving from their intercalated and deintercalated nature. Structural and electronic non-equivalence of pairs samples is detected in the critical region and found to be related, on microscopic scale, to a different average chain length, which, on being experimentally determined by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), sheds new light on the concept of critical cha…
We report direct observation of long-term durability of superconductivity of several YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$-Ag$_2$O composites that were first prepared and studied almost 14 years ago [J. J. Lin {\it et al}., Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. {\bf 29}, 497 (1990)]. Remeasurements performed recently on both resistances and magnetizations indicate a sharp critical transition temperature at 91 K. We also find that such long-term environmental stability of high-temperature superconductivity can only be achieved in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ with Ag$_2$O addition, but not with pure Ag addition.
Optical excitation in the cuprates has been shown to induce transient superconducting correlations above the thermodynamic transition temperature, $T_C$, as evidenced by the terahertz frequency optical properties in the non-equilibrium state. In YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ this phenomenon has so far been associated with the nonlinear excitation of certain lattice modes and the creation of new crystal structures. In other compounds, like La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$, similar effects were reported also for excitation at near infrared frequencies, and were interpreted as a signature of the melting of compe…

To clarify the order parameter symmetry of cuprates, the magnetic penetration depth $λ$ was measured along the crystallographic directions $a$, $b$, and $c$ in single crystals of YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ via muon spin rotation. This method is direct, bulk sensitive, and unambiguous. The temperature dependences of $λ_a^{-2}$ and $λ_b^{-2}$ exhibit an inflection point at low temperatures as is typical for two-gap superconductivity (TGS) with $s+d-$wave character in the planes. Perpendicular to the planes a pure s-wave gap is observed thereby highlighting the important role of c-axis effects. We conclu…
Hole-doped cuprate superconductors show a ubiquitous tendency towards charge order. Although onset of superconductivity is known to suppress charge order, there has not so far been a decisive demonstration of the reverse process, namely, the effect of charge order on superconductivity. To gain such information, we report here the dependence of the critical temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$ on in-plane uniaxial stress up to 2 GPa. At a compression of about 1 GPa along the $a$ axis, 3D-correlated charge density wave (3D CDW) order appears. We find that $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ decr…
A central issue in the quest to understand the superconductivity in cuprates is the nature and origin of the pseudogap state, which harbours anomalous electronic states such as Fermi arc, charge density wave (CDW), and $d$-wave superconductivity. A fundamentally important, but long-standing controversial problem has been whether the pseudogap state is a distinct thermodynamic phase characterized by broken symmetries below the onset temperature $T^*$. Electronic nematicity, a fourfold ($C_4$) rotational symmetry breaking, has emerged as a key feature inside the pseudogap regime, but the presenc…
The oxygen deficiency $δ$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) plays a crucial role for affecting high-temperature superconductivity. We applied (coincident) Doppler broadening spectroscopy of the electron-positron annihilation line to study in situ the temperature dependence of the oxygen concentration and its depth profile in single crystalline YBCO film grown on SrTiO$_3$ (STO) substrates. The oxygen diffusion during tempering was found to lead to a distinct depth dependence of $δ$, which is not accessible using X-ray diffraction. A steady-state reached within a few minutes is defined by both, …
Coexistence of ferromagnetic and superconducting orders and their interplay in ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructures is a topic of intense research. While it is well known that proximity of a ferromagnet suppresses superconducting order in the superconductor, there exist few studies indicating the proximity of a superconductor suppressing ferromagnetic order in a ferromagnet. Here we demonstrate a rare observation of the suppression of ferromagnetic order in a LaCaMnO3 layer separated from a YBa2Cu3O7-δ layer by a thin insulator (SrTiO3). Polarized neutron reflectivity measurements on La…

We present a low-energy muon-spin-rotation study of the magnetic and superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7/PrBa2Cu3O7 trilayer and bilayer heterostructures. By determining the magnetic-field profiles throughout these structures we show that a finite superfluid density can be induced in otherwise semiconducting PrBa2Cu3O7 layers when juxtaposed to YBa2Cu3O7 "electrodes" while the intrinsic antiferromagnetic order is unaffected.
The YBa2Cu3O8-x and NaxWO3 superconductors are treated not as an ionic compounds but rather as an arrays of atoms featuring both covalent and metallic bonding. We accept as particle radii the positions of the principal maxima in the radial distribution functions of the charge density, which are very close to the known covalent and metallic radii of atoms while differing strongly from the traditional ionic radii. The graphic pattern of atomic packing in the lattices reveals a number of features inherent in nonstoichiometric compounds. The network of atoms Y and Ba in medium Cu-O and of atoms Na…
The copper oxides present the highest superconducting temperature and properties at odds with other compounds, suggestive of a fundamentally different superconductivity. In particular, the Abrikosov vortices fail to exhibit localized states expected and observed in all clean superconductors. We have explored the possibility that the elusive vortex-core signatures are actually present but weak. Combining local tunneling measurements with large-scale theoretical modeling, we positively identify the vortex states in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$. We explain their spectrum and the observed variations the…
The normal and superconducting state of YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+δ} and Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} are investigated by using the mono- and bilayer Hubbard model within the fluctuation exchange approximation and a proper description of the Fermi surface topology. The inter- and intra-layer interactions, the renormalization of the bilayer splitting and the formation of shadow bands are investigated in detail. Although the shadow states are not visible in the monolayer, we find that the additional correlations in bilayers boost the shadow state intensity and will lead to their observability. In the sup…
Combined synchrotron angle-dispersive powder diffraction and micro-Raman spectroscopy are used to investigate the pressure-induced lattice instabilities that are accompanied by T$_{\rm c}$ anomalies in YBa$_{\rm 2}$Cu$_{\rm 4}$O$_{\rm 8}$, in comparison with the optimally doped YBa$_{\rm 2}$Cu$_{\rm 3}$O$_{\rm 7-δ}$ and the non-superconducting PrBa$_{\rm 2}$Cu$_{\rm 3}$O$_{\rm 6.92}$. In the first two superconducting systems there is a clear anomaly in the evolution of the lattice parameters and an increase of lattice disorder with pressure, that starts at $\approx3.7 GPa$ as well as irreversi…
A reentrant superconducting effect was observed in YBCO particles as a consequence of their size and microstructure. It rises from the coexistence between bulk superconductivity and surface ferromagnetism, where the enhanced magneto-electric coupling induced by broken spatial-inversion symmetry in layers near structural defects plays a very important role on surface ferromagnetism. The study assumes grain boundaries inside the particles act as additional surface regions that enhance the ferromagnetic properties. Magnetic and superconducting properties as a function of particle size were studie…
We report on the effects of hydrostatic pressure (HP) on the charge density wave observed in underdoped cuprates. We studied YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ ($T_c$=61 K) using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS), and reveal an extreme sensitivity of the phonon anomalies related to the charge density wave (CDW) order to HP. The amplitudes of the normal state broadening and superconductivity induced phonon softening at Q$_{CDW}$ rapidly decrease as HP is applied, resulting in the complete suppression of signatures of the CDW below $\sim$1 GPa. Additional IXS measurements on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements conducted on epitaxially grown bilayers of half-metallic ferromagnetic La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) on superconducting (SC) (100)YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) reveal long-range penetration of superconducting order into the LCMO. This anomalous proximity effect manifests itself in the tunneling spectra measured on the LCMO layer as gaps and zero bias conductance peaks. Remarkably, these proximity-induced spectral features were observed for bilayers with LCMO thickness of up to 30 nm, an order of magnitude larger than the expected ferromagnetic coherence length in …
The effect of Co-Ga paired substitution on the superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7-d (Y-123) has been investigated by X-ray diffraction, ac susceptibility,dc resistivity and oxygen content measurements. We report in this paper the results of our studies on the paired substitution of a magnetic and non-magnetic ion at Cu site in Y-123, while keeping the total dopant concentration fixed. The simultaneous substitution of Co and Ga at Cu site shows variation in the transition temperature (Tc), oxygen content and hole concentration as a function of change in the balance of magnetic (Co) and non…
Using 63Cu NMR, we establish that the enhancement of spin order by a magnetic field H in YBa2Cu3O6.45 arises from a competition with superconductivity because the effect occurs for H perpendicular, but not parallel, to the CuO2 planes, and it persists up to field values comparable to Hc2. We also find that the spin-freezing has a glassy nature and that the frozen state onsets at a temperature which is independent of the magnitude of H. These results, together with the presence of a competing charge-ordering instability at nearby doping levels, are strikingly parallel to those previously obtain…
Commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering has been observed in the superconducting high-$Tc$ cuprate ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.5}}$ (${\rm T_{c}}$=55 K) by polarized and unpolarized elastic neutron scattering. The magnetic peak intensity exhibits a marked enhancement at $T_{c}$. Zero-field $μ$SR experiments demonstrate that the staggered magnetization is not truly static but fluctuates on a nanosecond time scale. These results point towards an unusual spin density wave state coexisting with superconductivity.
The crystal structure and electrical resistivity of YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ (Y124) were studied under high pressure up to 18 GPa using diamond-anvil cells, respectively, in order to clarify its conduction mechanism. Y124 causes the first-order phase-transition into the orthorhombic Immm at pressure around 11 GPa. The high-pressure phase (HPP) also shows the superconductivity, while the manner of temperature dependence of electrical resistance and the pressure dependence of transition temperature, Tc, drastically change above 11 GPa. The CuO$_2$ plane persists in HPP but the CuO double chains collap…
We present a detailed study of the temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) dependence of the electronic density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level, as deduced from specific heat and Knight shift measurements in underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy. We find that the DOS becomes field-independent above a characteristic field H_{DOS} and that the H_{DOS}(T) line displays an unusual inflection near the onset of the long range 3D charge-density wave order. The unusual S-shape of H_{DOS}(T) is suggestive of two mutually-exclusive orders that eventually establish a form of cooperation in order to coexist at low T. On…
We report that in YBa2Cu3Oy and La2-xSrxCuO4 there is a spatially inhomogeneous response to magnetic field for temperatures T extending well above the bulk superconducting transition temperature Tc. An inhomogeneous magnetic response is observed above Tc even in ortho-II YBa2Cu3O6.50, which has highly ordered doping. The degree of the field inhomogeneity above Tc tracks the hole doping dependences of both Tc and the density of the superconducting carriers below Tc, and therefore is apparently coupled to superconductivity.
Superconductivity of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals was investigated in small magnetic fields. In magnetic measurements the superconducting transition for $\textbf{H} \| c$ appears 0.4 K higher than for $\textbf{H} \bot c$. In this temperature range superconductivity is two-dimensional and the total thickness of superconducting layers is about 0.83 of the sample thickness, which is a consequence of the occurrence of the quasi-insulating plane in the unit cell of the crystal structure. Resistivity in the \textit{ab}-plane and along the \textit{c}-axis was measured simultaneously. In the…
The electron-phonon interaction is a major factor influencing the competition between collective instabilities in correlated-electron materials, but its role in driving high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates remains poorly understood. We have used high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering to monitor low-energy phonons in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ (superconducting $\bf T_c = 61$ K), which is close to a charge density wave (CDW) instability. Phonons in a narrow range of momentum space around the CDW ordering vector exhibit extremely large superconductivity-induced lineshape renormaliza…
Polarized beam neutron scattering measurements on a highly perfect crystal of ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}}$ show a distinct magnetic transition with an onset at about 235K, the temperature expected for the pseudogap transition. The moment is found to be about 0.1 $μ_B$ for each sublattice and have a correlation length of at least 75 Å. We found the critical exponent for the magnetic neutron intensity to be 2$β$ =0.37$\pm$ 0.12. This is the proper range for the class of transition that has no specific heat divergence possibly explaining why none is found at the pseudogap transition.
Of the many different kinds of glassy states found in nature, spin glasses and structural glasses (e.g. normal window glass) have probably received the most attention. One of the central questions concerning the glassy state is whether the "glass" is a distinct thermodynamic phase from the "liquid" phase. It is believed that this may actually be the case for spin glasses, whereas the glass transition in structural glasses appears to be mostly kinetic in nature. Supercooled structural liquids, however, exhibit a wide range of behaviors, which can be classified using the "strong-fragile" scheme …
Recently, a strongly enhanced xy anisotropy of magnetic excitations was observed in YBa_2Cu_3O_y (YBCO_y) with y=6.45 and Tc=35 K [Science 319, 597 (2008)]. Unlike the observation in YBCO_6.6 and YBCO_6.85, the anisotropy grows to be pronounced at lower temperature and at lower energy, and is not suppressed by the onset of superconductivity. We propose that the effect of singlet pairing is substantially reduced in YBCO_6.45. This reduction concomitantly enhances an order competing with singlet pairing, a strong tendency of the so-called d-wave Pomeranchuk instability, leading to the magnetic e…
The Seebeck coefficient $S$ of the cuprate YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ was measured in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity, at hole dopings $p = 0.11$ and $p = 0.12$, for heat currents along the $a$ and $b$ directions of the orthorhombic crystal structure. For both directions, $S/T$ decreases and becomes negative at low temperature, a signature that the Fermi surface undergoes a reconstruction due to broken translational symmetry. Above a clear threshold field, a strong new feature appears in $S_{\rm b}$, for conduction along the $b$ axis only. We attribute this feature to …
The effect of the magnetic field on a capacitor with a superconducting electrode is studied within the Ginzburg-Landau approach. It is shown that the capacitance has a discontinuity at the onset of the surface superconductivity $B_{\rm c3}$ which is expressed as a discontinuity in the penetration depth of the electric field into metals. Estimates show that this discontinuity is observable with recent bridges for both conventional and high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors of the type-II.
The temperature dependent redistribution of the spectral weight of the $CuO_2$ plane derived conduction band of the $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.9}$ high temperature superconductor (T_c = 92.7 K) was studied with wide-band (from 0.01 to 5.6 eV) spectroscopic ellipsometry. A superconductivity - induced transfer of the spectral weight involving a high energy scale in excess of 1 eV was observed. Correspondingly, the charge carrier spectral weight was shown to decrease in the superconducting state. The ellipsometric data also provide detailed information about the evolution of the optical self-energy in the no…
Recent developments in high-temperature superconductivity highlight a generic tendency of the cuprates to develop competing electronic (charge) supermodulations. While coupled to the lattice and showing different characteristics in different materials, these supermodulations themselves are generally conceived to be quasi-two-dimensional, residing mainly in individual CuO2 planes, and poorly correlated along the c-axis. Here we observed with resonant elastic x-ray scattering a distinct type of electronic supermodulation in YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) thin films grown epitaxially on La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO)…
The competition between superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) order in underdoped cuprates has now been widely reported, but the role of disorder in this competition has yet to be fully resolved. A central question is whether disorder sets the length scale of the CDW order, for instance by pinning charge density fluctuations or disrupting an otherwise long range order. Using resonant soft x-ray scattering, we investigate the sensitivity of CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ (YBCO) to varying levels of oxygen disorder. We find that quench cooling YBCO$_{6.67}$ (YBCO$_{6.75}$) crystal…
Systematic microwave surface impedance measurements of YBCO single crystals grown in $BaZrO_3$ crucibles reveal new properties that are not directly seen in similar measurements of other YBCO samples. Two key observations obtained from complex conductivity are: a new normal conductivity peak at around 80K and additional pairing below 65K. High pressure oxygenation of one of the crystals still yields the same results ruling out any effect of macroscopic segregation of O-deficient regions. A single complex order parameter cannot describe these data, and the results suggest at least two supercond…
High-temperature superconducting cuprates respond to doping with a dome-like dependence of their critical temperature ($T_{\mathrm{c}}$). But the family specific maximum $T_\mathrm{c}$ can be surpassed by application of pressure, a compelling observation known for decades. We investigate the phenomenon with high-pressure anvil cell nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and measure the charge content at planar Cu and O, and with it the doping of the ubiquitous CuO$_2$ plane with atomic scale resolution. We find that pressure increases the overall doping, as widely assumed, but when it enhances $T_\m…
YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ is a good candidate to systematically study high-temperature superconductivity by nanoengineering using advanced epitaxy. An essential prerequisite for these studies are coherently strained YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ thin films, which we present here using NdGaO$_3$ (110) as a substrate. The films are coherent up to at least 100 nm thickness and have a critical temperature of 89$\pm$1 K. The $a$ and $b$ lattice parameters of the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ are matched to the in-plane lattice parameters of NdGaO$_3$ (110), resulting in a large reduction of the orthorhombicity of t…
To explore the doping dependence of the recently discovered charge density wave (CDW) order in YBa2Cu3Oy, we present a bulk-sensitive high-energy x-ray study for several oxygen concentrations, including strongly underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.44. Combined with previous data around the so-called 1/8 doping, we show that bulk CDW order exists at least for hole concentrations (p) in the CuO2 planes of 0.078 <~ p <~ 0.132. This implies that CDW order exists in close vicinity to the quantum critical point for spin density wave (SDW) order. In contrast to the pseudogap temperature T*, the onset temperature of…
Inelastic x-ray scattering is used to investigate charge density wave (CDW) formation and the low-energy lattice dynamics of the underdoped high temperature superconductor ortho-II YBa2Cu3O6.54. We find that, for a temperature ~1/3 of the CDW onset temperature (~155 K), the CDW order is static within the resolution of the experiment, that is the inverse lifetime is less than 0.3 meV. In the same temperature region, low-energy phonons near the ordering wavevector of the CDW show large increases in their linewidths. This contrasts with the usual behavior in CDW systems where the phonon anomalies…
We report on measurements of the doping dependence of the upper critical field $H_{c,2}$ in 50 nm thick YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ films. The films are untwinned and are characterized by a small in-plane compressive strain. We find that the $H_{c,2}$ shows a strong decrease in the underdoped region of the phase diagram, in agreement with what has been measured in relaxed single crystals. The origin of the decrease of $H_{c,2}$ in the underdoped regime is discussed within a scenario where charge density wave order competes with superconductivity. This demonstrates the potential of using thin films …
Cuprate superconductors have a universal tendency to form charge density-wave (CDW) order which competes with superconductivity and is strongest at a doping $p \simeq 0.12$. Here we show that in the archetypal cuprate YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ (YBCO) pressure suppresses charge order, but does not affect the pseudogap phase. This is based on transport measurements under pressure, which reveal that the onset of the pseudogap at $T^*$ is independent of pressure, while the negative Hall effect, a clear signature of CDW order in YBCO, is suppressed by pressure. We also find that pressure and magneti…
A precursor of superconductivity has been searched in the in-plane optical spectra of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$, in which the previous $c$-axis optical spectra showed the presence of superconducting carriers at a temperature far above $T_c$ [Uykur $et al$., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 127003 (2014)][Dubroka $et al$., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 047006 (2011)]. By carefully subtracting the normal component from the imaginary part of conductivity $σ_2$($ω$), we found a clear in-plane response of superconducting condensate at the temperature consistent with the $c$-axis optical data. This confirms that t…
We report electronic Raman scattering measurements on optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7 where Zn or Ni impurities have been substituted by Cu. Using Raman selection rules, we have probed the superconducting gap in the nodal and antinodal regions. We show that under impurity substitutions, the energy of the antinodal peak detected in the superconducting state is not related to the critical temperature Tc and that signatures of superconductivity disappear in the nodal regions. Our experimental findings advocate in favor of gapless arcs around the nodes. The breakdown of the relationship between the anti…
