We present a semi-analytic model for shaping the nebula around eta Carinae that accounts for the simultaneous production of bipolar lobes and an equatorial disk through a rotating surface explosion. Material is launched normal to the surface of an oblate rotating star with an initial kick velocity that scales approximately with the local escape speed. Thereafter, ejecta follow ballistic orbital trajectories, feeling only a central force corresponding to a radiatively reduced gravity. Our model is conceptually similar to the wind-compressed disk model of Bjorkman & Cassinelli, but we modify it to an explosion instead of a steady line-driven wind, we include a rotationally-distorted star, and we treat the dynamics somewhat differently. Continuum-driving avoids the disk inhibition that normally operates in line-driven winds. Our model provides a simple method by which rotating hot stars can simultaneously produce intrinsically bipolar and equatorial mass ejections, without an aspherical environment or magnetic fields. Although motivated by eta Carinae, the model may have generic application to other LBVs, B[e] stars, or SN1987A's nebula. When near-Eddington radiative driving is less influential, our model generalizes to produce bipolar morphologies without disks, as seen in many PNe.
We report the first detection of X-ray emission associated with the Homunculus Nebula which surrounds the supermassive star Eta Carinae. The emission is characterized by a temperature in excess of 100 MK, and is consistent with scattering of the time-delayed X-ray flux associated with the star. The nebular emission is bright in the northwestern lobe and near the central regions of the Homunculus, and fainter in the southeastern lobe. We also report the detection of an unusually broad Fe K fluorescent line, which may indicate fluorescent scattering off the wind of a companion star or some other…
I examine the angular momentum evolution during the 1837-1856 Great Eruption of the massive star Eta Carinae. I find that the new estimate of the mass blown during that eruption implies that the envelope of Eta Car substantially spun-down during the 20 years eruption. Single-star models, most of which require the envelope to rotate close to the break-up velocity, cannot account for the bipolar nebula (the Homunculus) formed from matter expelled in that eruption. The kinetic energy and momentum of the Homunculus further constrains single-star models. I discuss how Eta Car can fit into a unified…
In this paper, we present two-dimensional gas dynamic simulations of the formation and evolution of the eta-Car bipolar outflows. Adopting the interacting nonspherical winds model, we have carried out high-resolution numerical simulations, which include explicitly computed time-dependent radiative cooling, for different possible scenarios of the colliding winds. In our simulations, we consider different degrees of non-spherical symmetry for the pre-outburst wind and the great eruption of the 1840s presented by the eta-Car wind. From these models, we obtain important differences in the shape an…
This work presents the first integral field spectroscopy of the Homunculus nebula around Eta Carinae in the near-infrared spectral region (J band). We confirmed the presence of a hole on the polar region of each lobe, as indicated by previous near-IR long-slit spectra and mid-IR images. The holes can be described as a cylinder of height (i.e. the thickness of the lobe) and diameter of 6.5 and 6.0x10^{16} cm, respectively. We also mapped the blue-shifted component of He I 10830 seen towards the NW lobe. Contrary to previous works, we suggested that this blue-shifted component is not related to …
The luminous blue variable Eta Carinae is surrounded by a complex and highly structured nebula of ejected material. The best-studied and axisymmetric components of this outflow consist of bipolar lobes (the ``homunculus'') and an equatorial ``skirt.'' Recent proper motion measurements suggest that the skirt was ejected at the same time as the lobes, contrary to the assumptions of all current theoretical models for the formation of the nebula (which use the skirt to collimate stellar winds into lobes). We present a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stellar wind model that produces an outflowing disk an…
Near-infrared emission lines provide unique diagnostics of the geometry, structure, kinematics, and excitation of eta Carinae's circumstellar ejecta, and give clues to the nature of its wind. The infrared spectrum is a strong function of position in eta Car's nebula, with a mix of intrinsic and reflected emission. Molecular hydrogen traces cool gas and dust in the polar lobes, while [Fe II] blankets their inner surfaces. These lines reveal the back wall of the SE polar lobe for the first time, and give the clearest picture yet of the 3-D geometry. Additionally, collisionally-excited [Fe II] re…
The nebula around Eta Carinae consists of an inner bipolar structure, historically called the Homunculus, and the outer ejecta consisting mainly of a variety of knots of different sizes. They reach out to distances of up to 30" or0.3pc from Eta Car. With high-resolution long-slit observations we mapped the outer nebula in order to analyze the global expansion pattern and to model the three dimensional structure of the ejecta. We find very different expansion velocities for the knots of the outer ejecta. In some cases they reach up to values as high as 2000km/s. Typical expansion velocities lie …
High-resolution spectra of [Fe II] 16435 around eta Carinae provide powerful diagnostics of the geometry and kinematics of the ``Little Homunculus'' (LH) growing inside the larger Homunculus nebula. The LH expansion is not perfectly homologous: while low-latitudes are consistent with linear expansion since 1910, the polar caps imply ejection dates around 1920--1930. However, the expansion speed of the LH is slower than the post-eruption wind, so the star's powerful wind may accelerate it. With an initial ejection speed of 200 km/s in 1890, the LH would have been accelerated to its present spee…
The planetary nebula NGC 6881 displays in the optical a quadrupolar morphology consisting of two pairs of highly collimated bipolar lobes aligned along different directions. An additional bipolar ejection is revealed by the hydrogen molecular emission, but its wide hourglass morphology is very different from that of the ionized material. To investigate in detail the spatial distribution of molecular hydrogen and ionized material within NGC 6881, and to determine the prevalent excitation mechanism of the H2 emission, we have obtained new near-IR Br-gamma and H2 and optical H-alpha and [N II] im…
The nebula Mz 3 has arguably the most complex bipolar morphology, consisting of three nested pairs of bipolar lobes and an equatorial ellipse. Its three pairs of bipolar lobes share the same axis of symmetry, but have very different opening angles and morphologies: the innermost pair of bipolar lobes shows closed lobe morphology, while the other two have open lobes with cylindrical and conical shapes, respectively. We have carried out high-dispersion spectroscopic observations of Mz 3, and detected distinct kinematic properties among the different morphological components. The expansion charac…
High-resolution mid-infrared images have been obtained in N-band and Q-band for the proto-planetary nebula IRAS 16594-4656. A bright equatorial torus and a pair of bipolar lobes can clearly be seen in the infrared images. The torus appears thinner at the center than at the edges, suggesting that it is viewed nearly edge-on. The infrared lobes correspond to the brightest lobes of the reflection nebula seen in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical image, but with no sign of the point-symmetric structure seen in the visible image. The lobe structure shows a close correspondence with a molecula…
We present thermal infrared images of the bipolar nebula surrounding eta Carinae at six wavelengths from 4.8 to 24.5 microns. These were obtained with the MIRAC3 camera system at the Magellan Observatory. Our images reveal new intricate structure in the bright core of the nebula, allowing us to re-evaluate interpretations of morphology seen in images with lower resolution. Complex structures in the core might not arise from a pair of overlapping rings or a cool (110 K) and very massive dust torus, as has been suggested recently. Instead, it seems more likely that the arcs and compact knots com…
I compare the structures of the bipolar nebulae around the massive binary system Eta Carinae and around the low mass binary system HD 44179. While Eta Carinae is on its way to become a supernova, the Red Rectangle is on its way to form a planetary nebula. Despite the two orders of magnitude difference in mass, these two systems show several similarities, both in the properties of the stellar binary systems and the nebulae. From this comparison and further analysis of the accretion process during the 20 years Great Eruption of Eta Carinae, I strengthen the binary model for the formation of its …
With our new speckle imaging polarimeter we have obtained first polarimetric images with sub-arcsecond resolution of the Luminous Blue Variable eta Carinae in the Halpha line. The polarization patterns at the 3'' scale match well earlier conventional imaging photometry and can be interpreted as Mie scattering. In centered long-exposure images we detected in polarized light a bar in the NE part of the equatorial plane of eta Carinae. High-resolution 0.11'' polarimetric speckle reconstructions reveal a compact structure elongated in the same direction which is consistent, in degree and position …
HR Carinae is one of the few Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) in the Galaxy. It has a nebula that appears bipolar. We have obtained imaging and high-dispersion, long-slit echelle data of the HR Car nebula, and confirmed that it is a bipolar nebula. Its polar axis lies along the position angle of 125 +- 5 degree; each lobe has, at a distance of 5 kpc a diameter of about 0.65 pc and a line-of-sight expansion velocity of 75-150 km/sec. Beside the expanding bipolar lobes, a number of [NII]-bright knots are detected. These knots have lower expansion velocities than the lobes and are detected only wit…
High resolution near-infrared adaptive optics imaging and polarimetry have been obtained of the Homunculus Nebula and its central star Eta Carinae (HD 93308). Maps of the linear polarization at a resolution of <0.2'' have been made in the J, H and K bands and in a narrow 2.15micron continuum band (K_c). The overall appearance of the nebula in the near-IR is similar in all bands and to that at V, with specific features less sharp to longer wavelengths. The large-scale pattern of polarization vectors is centro-symmetric demonstrating that single scattering dominates everywhere except perhaps in …
We have carried out a spatial-kinematical study of three proto-planetary nebulae, IRAS 16594-4656, Hen 3-401, and Rob 22. High-resolution H2 images were obtained with NICMOS on the HST and high-resolution spectra were obtained with the Phoenix spectrograph on Gemini-South. IRAS 16594-4656 shows a "peanut-shaped" bipolar structure with H2 emission from the walls and from two pairs of more distant, point-symmetric faint blobs. The velocity structure shows the polar axis to be in the plane of the sky, contrary to the impression given by the more complex visual image and the visibility of the cent…
I conduct an analytical study of the interaction of jets, or a collimated fast wind (CFW), with a previously blown asymptotic giant branch (AGB) slow wind. Such jets (or CFWs) are supposedly formed when a compact companion, a main sequence star or a white dwarf, accretes mass from the AGB star, forms an accretion disk, and blows two jets. This type of flow, which is thought to shape bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe), requires 3-dimensional gas dynamical simulations, which are limited in the parameter space they can cover. By imposing several simplifying assumptions, I derive simple expressions w…
We have observed the bipolar jet from RW Aur A with STIS on board the HST. After continuum subtraction, morphological and kinematic properties of this outflow can be traced to within 0."1 from the source in forbidden emission lines. The jet appears well collimated, with typical FWHMs of 20 to 30 AU in the first 2" and surprisingly does not show a separate low-velocity component in contrast to earlier observations. The systemic radial outflow velocity of the blueshifted lobe is typically 50% larger than that of the redshifted one with a velocity difference of about 65 km/s. Although such asymme…
High-resolution near-infrared images and moderate resolution spectra were obtained of the bipolar nebulae M~2--9 and AFGL 2688. The ability to spatially and spectrally resolve the various components of the nebulae has proved to be important in determining their physical structure and characteristics. In M~2--9, the lobes are found to have a double-shell structure. Analysis of \h2\ line ratios indicates that the \h2\ emission is radiatively excited. A well-resolved photodissociation region is observed in the lobes. The spectrum of the central source is dominated by H recombination lines and a s…
High resolution long-slit spectra obtained with the Phoenix spectrograph on Gemini South provide our most accurate probe of the three dimensional structure of the Homunculus around eta Car. The new near-infrared spectra dramatically confirm the double-shell structure inferred previously from thermal dust emission, resolving the nebula into a very thin outer shell seen in H2 21218, and a warmer, thicker inner layer seen in [Fe II] 16435. The thin H2 skin hints that the most important mass loss during the 19th century eruption had a very short duration of less than 5 yr. H2 emission traces the m…
CO emission has been imaged at 2" resolution in the central 10 kpc of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 3367. This galaxy has bipolar synchrotron lobes out to a radii of 6 kpc, straddling the compact nucleus. The peak molecular emission is in a source of radius 2" (425 pc) centered on the galaxy nucleus. The molecular mass is about 3 times 10**8 Msun in this peak an about 5.9 times 10**8 Msun within a radius of 4".5 (950 pc). The very large gas masses in the central source imply extinctions sufficiently high to completely obscure optical emission lines (e.g.BLR) associated with the nuclear radio so…
We present high angular resolution ($\sim0\rlap.{''}1$-$0\rlap.{''}4$) VLA observations at 2 and 6 cm made in 1983, 1986, and 1995 toward the ultracompact bipolar H II region NGC 7538 IRS1. We find, at both wavelengths, clear evidence of a decrease in the emission from the lobes. This decrease, of orden 20-30%, has not been observed previously in any ultracompact H II region. Most likely, it is due to recombination of the ionized gas in the lobes as a result of a decrease in the available ionizing photon flux. It is unclear if this decrease in the ionizing photon flux is due to an intrinsic ch…
Using STIS on board the HST we have obtained a spectroscopic map of the bipolar jet from RW Aur. We find signatures of rotation within the first 300 AU of the jet (1.''5 from RW Aur). Both lobes rotate in the same direction (i.e. with different helicities). Toroidal velocities are in the range 5 - 30 km/s at 20 (30) AU from the symmetry axis in the blueshifted (redshifted) lobe, in line with other STIS observations and with theoretical simulations. The sense of rotation is anti-clockwise looking from the tip of the blue lobe down to the star. Rotation is more evident in the [OI] and [NII] line…
We analyse the point-symmetric planetary nebula NGC 6309 in terms of its three-dimensional structure and of internal variations of the physical conditions to deduce the physical processes involved in its formation. We used VLA-D 3.6-cm continuum, ground-based, and HST-archive imaging as well as long slit high- and low-dispersion spectroscopy. The low-dispersion spectra indicate a high excitation nebula, with low to medium variations of its internal physical conditions. In the optical images, the point-symmetric knots show a lack of [NII] emission as compared with similar features previously kn…
We present observations of continuum (lambda = 0.7, 1.3, 3.6 and 18 cm) and OH maser (lambda = 18 cm) emission toward the young planetary nebula IRAS 17347-3139, which is one of the three planetary nebulae that are known to harbor water maser emission. From the continuum observations we show that the ionized shell of IRAS 17347-3139 consists of two main structures: one extended (size ~1". 5) with bipolar morphology along PA=-30 degrees, elongated in the same direction as the lobes observed in the near-infrared images, and a central compact structure (size ~0". 25) elongated in the direction pe…
We present high-resolution images of the strongly bipolar planetary nebula NGC 6537, obtained with Hubble Space Telescope and with the infrared adaptive optics system on the Very Large Telescope. The central star is detected for the first time. Using the multi-band photometry and constraints from the dynamical age of the nebula, we derive a temperature in the range 1.5-2.5 10^5 K, a luminosity~10^3 L_sun and a core mass M_c~0.7-0.9 M_sun. The progenitor mass is probably in the range M_i = 3-7 M_sun. The extinction map shows a largely symmetric, and compact dust structure, which is most likely …
We present high-dispersion long-slit IR spectra of the double-shell bipolar planetary nebula M 2-9 in the emission lines [Fe II] 16435 and H2 v=1--0 S(1) 21218. H2 spectra reveal for the first time the kinematic structure of the outer shell in M 2-9. Kinematics of the inner shell, traced by [Fe II], resemble those of optical lines like [N II]. [Fe II] and H2 shells have expansion speeds roughly proportional to distance from the star (``Hubble'' flows) and share the same dynamical age of 1200--2000 yr, depending on the distance to M 2-9. Thus, the inner ionized lobes and outer molecular lobes, …
This work presents three dimensional, magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of the formation and early evolution of a subgroup of planetary nebulae that exhibit a variety of point-symmetric structures. For bipolar nebulae, the formation of point-symmetric nebular shapes along the inner borders of their opposing lobes and/or collimated outflows or jets internal or external to their cavities, is reproduced by considering a steady misalignment of the magnetic collimation axis with respect to the symmetry axis of the bipolar wind outflow, defined perpendicular to the equatorial density enhancement. E…
The H2 and optical (Ha, [NII]) morphology of NGC 6881 are very different. Here we present a preliminary report of the analysis of new optical (Ha and [NII]) and near-IR (Brg and H2) images and intermediate resolution JHK spectra of this nebula. Our observations confirm the association of the H2 bipolar lobes to NGC 6881 and reveal that H2 is predominantly shock excited in this nebula. We conclude that NGC 6881 has multiple bipolar lobes that formed at different phases of the nebular evolution and that the collimation conditions or even the collimating agent changed from one ejection to the oth…
High-resolution near-infrared HST NICMOS (F160W, F222M) images and polarization (2 um) observations were made of four bipolar proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs): IRAS 17150-3224, IRAS 17441-2411, IRAS 17245-3951, and IRAS 16594-4656. The first three of these are viewed nearly edge-on, and for the first time the central stars in them are seen. Color maps reveal a reddened torus between the bipolar lobes in the edge-on cases, with bluer lobes. The polarization values are high, with maximum values ranging from 40 to 80%. The polarization patterns are basically centrosymmetric, with some deviations in…
We present the results of HST/STIS and WFPC2 observations of LkHa 233 and its environment. LkHa233 is a Herbig Ae/Be star with a collimated bipolar jet. We investigate optical forbidden lines along the LkHa 233 jet to determine physical parameters of this jet (electron density n_e, hydrogen ionisation fraction x_e, electron temperature T_e, and mass density n_H). The knowledge of these parameters allows us a direct comparison of a jet from a Herbig star with those from T Tauri stars. The WFPC2 images in broad-band filters clearly show a dark lane caused either by a circumstellar disk or a dust…
The bipolar reflection nebula OH 231.8+4.2 (OH 0739-14), centred on the Mira variable star QX Pup, has been mapped at Ks in linear polarization using the ESO SOFI near-infrared multi-mode instrument. The large scale linear polarization features agree with previous studies, validating the polarimetric mode of the instrument. However the high spatial resolution of the polarization map reveals considerable structure, some of which finds correspondence in the surface brightness images. The core is crossed by low polarization filaments; the northern lobe reveals an axial finger and a rim of very hi…
We present broadband imaging polarimetry of DR21 at 2.2$μ$m. Background stars shining through the lobes of the bipolar outflow show polarization aligned with the long axis of the outflow, indicating a magnetic field geometry oriented along the flow axis. There is no indication of a spiral or turbulent magnetic field geometry in the lobes. The polarization of stars in the central cluster has a different position angle than the lobes and is in good agreement with millimeter polarimetry. The nebulosity in the Eastern lobe has moderate to high polarization consistent with scattering of continuum l…
The extremely luminous and unstable star Eta Carinae is surrounded by ejecta formed during the star's giant eruption around 1843. The optical nebula consists of an inner region, the bipolar Homunculus and the outer ejecta. The X-ray emission as detected in ROSAT and CHANDRA shows a hook shaped emission structure mainly at the position of the outer ejecta substantially larger than the Homunculus. We present results of a comparative study of the optical morphology, the kinematics and the X-ray emission of the outer ejecta around Eta Carinae. In general we find that the X-ray emission traces the …
A hydrodynamic model involving cooling gas in the stagnation region of a collimated outflow is proposed for the formation of the giant parsec-scale bipolar envelope that surrounds the planetary nebula KjPn 8. Analytical calculations and numerical simulations are presented to evaluate the model. The envelope is considered to consist mainly of environmental gas swept-up by shocks driven by an episodic, collimated, bipolar outflow. In this model, which we call the ``free stagnation knot'' mechanism, the swept-up ambient gas located in the stagnation region of the bow-shock cools to produce a high…
We discuss the interaction of the slow wind blown by an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star with a collimated fast wind (CFW) blown by its main sequence or white dwarf companion, at orbital separations in the range of several AU to about 200 AU. The CFW results from accretion of the AGB wind into an accretion disk around the companion. The fast wind is collimated by the accretion disk. We argue that such systems are the progenitors of bipolar planetary nebulae and bipolar symbiotic nebulae with a very narrow equatorial waist between the two polar lobes. We conduct a population synthesis study o…
The 2.12 micron v=1-0 S(1) line of molecular hydrogen has been imaged in the Hourglass region of M8. The line is emitted from a roughly bipolar region, centred around the O7 star Herschel 36. The peak H2 1-0 S(1) line intensity is 8.2 x 10E-15 erg s-1 cm-2 arcsec-2. The line centre emission velocity varies from -25 kms in the SE lobe to +45 kms in the NW lobe. The distribution is similar to that of the CO J=3-2 line. The H2 line appears to be shock-excited when a bipolar outflow from Herschel 36 interacts with the ambient molecular cloud. The total luminosity of all H2 lines is estimated to be…
The structure and kinematics of the bipolar nebula Mz 3 have been investigated by means of HST, CTIO and ESO images and spectra. At least four distinct outflows have been identified which, from the inside to the outside, are the following: a pair of bright bipolar lobes, two opposite highly collimated column-shaped outflows, a conical system of radial structure, and a very dim, previously unnoticed, low-latitude and flattened (ring-like) radial outflow. A simple Hubble-law describes the velocity field of the ballisticaly expanding lobes, columns and rays, suggesting that their shaping has bein…
We present narrow-band optical images, VLA-A 3.6 cm continuum and H92alpha emission line data and high resolution long-slit [N II] spectra of Hu 2-1. The formation of Hu 2-1 appears dominated by anisotropic mass ejection during the late AGB stage of its progenitor and by variable, ``precessing'' collimated bipolar outflows during the proto-PN and/or early PN phases. The data strongly support the existence of a binary central star at center of Hu 2-1: (1) the brightness distribution of the bipolar lobes and inner shell is point-symmetric, and the bipolar lobes show departures from axial symmetr…
We aim at getting high spatial resolution information on the dusty core of bipolar planetary nebulae to directly constrain the shaping process. Methods: We present observations of the dusty core of the extreme bipolar planetary nebula Menzel 3 (Mz 3, Hen 2-154, the Ant) taken with the mid-infrared interferometer MIDI/VLTI and the adaptive optics NACO/VLT. The core of Mz 3 is clearly resolved with MIDI in the interferometric mode, whereas it is unresolved from the Ks to the N bands with single dish 8.2 m observations on a scale ranging from 60 to 250 mas. A striking dependence of the dust core …
We present high-resolution observations of several molecular lines in OH231.8+4.2 taken with the IRAM interferometer. All molecules are distributed in a narrow region along the symmetry axis, and flow outwards following a velocity gradient similar to that found in CO. The HCO+ emission is found to be very clumpy and strongly enhanced in the shock-accelerated lobes, indicating that the formation of this molecule is probably dominated by shock induced reactions. SO is present in the axial outflow as well as in an expanding equatorial disk. The SiO maser emission seems to arise from the innermost…
From medium-resolution radio images, DR 16 was suspected to be a large cometary nebula. To test this suggestion we obtained a higher resolution (15\arcsec) VLA continuum map. We also analyzed data from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey in continuum, H I line, and IR. These data were supplemented by published near-infrared (J, H, K) stellar photometric results and MSX 8.28 micrometer data. We suggest that DR 16 is the diffuse H II region of an ongoing star formation site at a distance of about 3 kpc. The complicated radio picture arises from the superposition of diffuse H II with the remains o…
The Homunculus reflection nebula around eta Carinae provides a rare opportunity to observe the spectrum of a star from multiple latitudes. We present STIS spectra of several positions in the Homunculus, showing directly that eta Car has an aspherical stellar wind. P Cygni absorption in Balmer lines depends on latitude, with high velocities and strong absorption near the poles. Stronger absorption at high latitudes is surprising, and it suggests higher mass flux toward the poles, perhaps resulting from radiative driving with equatorial gravity darkening on a rotating star. Reflected profiles of…
The outer ejecta is part of the nebula around Eta Carinae. They are filamentary, shaped irregularly and larger than the Homunculus, the central bipolar nebula. While the Homuculus is mainly a reflection nebula, the outer ejecta is an emission structure. However, we showed with kinematic analysis that the outer ejecta (as the Homunculus) expands bi-directional despite of its complex morphology. Radial velocities in the outer ejecta reach up to 2000km/s and give rise to X-ray emission. An analysis showing the distribution of the soft X-ray emission and its comparison to the optical emitting gas …
We present near infrared broad band and polarimetric images of the compact star forming cluster AFGL437 obtained with the NICMOS instrument aboard HST. Our high resolution images reveal a well collimated bipolar reflection nebulosity in the cluster and allow us to identify WK34 as the illuminating source. The scattered light in the bipolar nebulosity centered on this source is very highly polarized (up to 79%). Such high levels of polarization implies a distribution of dust grains lacking large grains, contrary to the usual dust models of dark clouds. We discuss the geometry of the dust distri…
We have used infrared polarimetric imaging with NICMOS to determine precisely the position of the star that illuminates (and presumably generated) the bipolar, pre-planetary reflection nebula RAFGL 2688 (the Egg Nebula). The polarimetric data pinpoint the illuminating star, which is not detected directly at wavelengths less than or equal to 2 microns, at a position well within the dark lane that bisects the nebula, 0.55" (about 550 AU) southwest of the infrared peak which was previously detected at the southern tip of the northern polar lobe. The inferred position of the central star correspon…
[Context] Water fountain stars are very young post-AGB stars with high velocity water maser jets. They are the best objects to study the onset of bipolar jets from evolved stars due to their young dynamical ages. [Methods] We use the Arizona Radio Observatory 10m telescope to observe the CO J=2-1 line and compare the line parameters with that of masers. [Results] We report the detection of 12CO and 13COJ=2-1 lines from IRAS 16342-3814. The inferred 12CO mass loss rate is an order of magnitude lower than the infrared and OH mass loss rates, indicating a very cold and thick O-rich circumstellar …
Eta Carinae is a very luminous and unstable evolved star. Outflowing material ejected during the star's giant eruption in 1843 surrounds it as a nebula which consists of an inner bipolar region(the Homunculus) and the Outer Ejecta. The outer ejecta is very filamentary and shaped irregularly. Kinematic analysis, however, shows a regular bi-directional expansion despite of the complex morphology. Radial velocities in the outer ejecta reach up to 2000 kms/s and give rise to X-ray emission first detected by ROSAT. We will present a detailed study of the outer ejecta based on HST images, high-resol…
We present narrow-band images and long-slit echelle spectra of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC 6778. The data show this PN as bipolar, with a very prominent low-excitation equatorial toroid, high-excitation lobes and two pairs of collimated outflows. Morphologically, the pairs of outflows are different from each other; one is linear and oriented along the bipolar axis, the other presents an S-shape with changing orientations. Besides the different morphology, both pairs of collimated outflows present radial velocities increasing with distance from the central star and share a common origin in br…
We present multi-epoch, diffraction-limited images of the nebula around the carbon star CIT 6 at 2.2 microns and 3.1 microns from aperture masking on the Keck-I telescope. The near-IR nebula is resolved into two main components, an elongated, bright feature showing time-variable asymmetry and a fainter component about 60 milliarcseconds away with a cooler color temperature. These images were precisely registered (~35 milliarcseconds) with respect to recent visible images from the Hubble Space Telescope (Trammell et al. 2000), which showed a bipolar structure in scattered light. The dominant ne…
Images of Hubble 12 were obtained with the HST/NICMOS instrument in the F110W, F164N, and F166N filters of NIC1, and the F160W, F187N, F190N, F212N, F215N filters of NIC2. The images show the structure of the inner ``torus'' and lobes much clearer than previous ground-based images. In particular, the [Fe II] lobes are clearly resolved and shown to be distinct from the molecular hydrogen emission structures. Apparent changes in the inner ionized and neutral bipolar shell implies periodic mass loss or changes in stellar wind shape or direction. The molecular hydrogen in the ``eye'' is radiativel…
The luminous unstable star (star system) eta Carinae is surrounded by an optically bright bipolar nebula, the Homunculus and a fainter but much larger nebula, the so-called outer ejecta. As images from the EINSTEIN and ROSAT satellites have shown, the outer ejecta is also visible in soft X-rays, while the central source is present in the harder X-ray bands. With our CHANDRA observations we show that the morphology and properties of the X-ray nebula are the result of shocks from fast clumps in the outer ejecta moving into a pre-existing denser circumstellar medium. An additional contribution to…
In this paper we study the near-infrared emission spectrum of IRAS 16594-4656, a bipolar post-AGB star with spectral type B7 and no observed ionization. Using optical and near-infrared photometry we determined the total extinction towards this object to be A_V=7.5 +/- 0.4 mag and derived a distance of 2.2 +/- 0.4 kpc, assuming a luminosity of 10^4 L_sol. The near-infrared spectrum shows strong H_2 emission lines and some typical metastable shock excited lines such as [Fe II] 1.257 & 1.644 micron. We determined the rotational and vibrational excitation temperatures, as well as the ortho-to-para…
We report high angular-resolution (~1") CO J=3--2 interferometric mapping, using the Submillimeter Array (SMA), of IRAS22036+5306 (I22036), a bipolar pre-planetary nebula (PPN) with knotty jets discovered in our HST SNAPshot survey of young PPNs. In addition, we have obtained supporting lower-resolution (~10") CO and 13CO J=1-0 observations with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) interferometer, as well as optical long-slit echelle spectra at the Palomar Observatory. The CO J=3-2 observations show the presence of a very fast (~220 km/s), highly collimated, massive (0.03 Msun) bipolar ou…
We present high-resolution J-, H-, and K-band observations and the first H-K color image of the carbon star IRC +10216. The images were reconstructed from 6m telescope speckle interferograms using the bispectrum speckle interferometry method. The H and K images with resolutions between 70mas and 92mas consist of several compact components within a 0.2" radius and a fainter asymmetric nebula. The brightest four components are denoted with A to D in the order of decreasing brightness in the 1996 image. A comparison of our images from 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998 gives - almost like a movie of five…
We present numerical simulations of the interaction between a collimated, bipolar ``pulse'' ejected from a star and a continuous wind ejected from a stellar companion. We explore the characteristics of the predicted H$α$ intensity maps by varying selected input parameters. We find that the asymmetry (in size and strength) between the two lobes of the proto-planetary nebula OH 231.8+4.2 is reproduced in this scenario if the wind ejected by the companion star has a strong latitude dependence.
We obtained H-band polarimetric data of IRAS 19312+1950 using the near-infrared camera (CIAO) on the 8 m Subaru telescope. In order to investigate the physical properties of the central star and the nebula, we performed dust radiative transfer modeling and compared the model results with the observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs), the radial profiles of the total intensity image, and the fraction of linear polarization map. The total intensity image shows a nearly spherical core with ~3" radius, an S-shaped arm extending ~10" in the northwest to southeast direction, and an extended lobe…
We review some of the reasons for believing that the generic core-collapse supernova is neutrino-driven, not MHD-jet driven. We include a discussion of the possible role of rotation in supernova blast energetics and morphology, and speculate on the origin of Cas A's and SN1987A's ejecta fields. Two "explosive" phenomena may be associated with most core collapses, the neutrino-driven supernova itself and an underenergetic jet-like ejection that follows. The latter may be a magnetic wind that easily penetrates the debris created by the much more energetic supernova. We predict that many core-col…
I argue that the slowly expanding biconical structure of the Red Rectangle--a nebula around the post asymptotic giant branch binary stellar system HD 44179--can be formed by intermittent jets blown by the accreting companion. The bright biconical structure of the Red Rectangle nebula can be understood to be composed of a multiple double-ring system. In the proposed shaping process, one among several processes through which a companion can shape the circumbinary gas, the companion accretes mass from the slow wind blown by the evolved mass losing star. An accretion disk is formed, and if mass ac…
