We study the dynamics of monodisperse hard ellipsoids via a new event-driven molecular dynamics algorithm as a function of volume fraction $ϕ$ and aspect ratio $X_0$. We evaluate the translational $D_{trans}$ and the rotational $D_{rot}$ diffusion coefficient and the associated isodiffusivity lines in the $ϕ-X_0$ plane. We observe a decoupling of the translational and rotational dynamics which generates an almost perpendicular crossing of the $D_{trans}$ and $D_{rot}$ isodiffusivity lines. While the self intermediate scattering function exhibits stretched relaxation, i.e. glassy dynamics, only for large $ϕ$ and $X_0 \approx 1$, the second order orientational correlator $C_2(t)$ shows stretching only for large and small $X_0$ values. We discuss these findings in the context of a possible pre-nematic order driven glass transition.
The density profiles and corresponding order parameters of the hard ellipsoids confined between two hard walls and also in contact with a single hard wall are studied using the density functional theory. The Hyper-Netted Chain (HNC) approximation is used to write excess grand potential of the system with respect to the bulk value. To simplify the calculations we use restricted orientation model (ROM) for the orientation of ellipsoids to find the density profiles and order parameters. Density functional theory shows that there is a uniaxial-biaxial phase transition near a single hard wall and a…
We perform event-driven molecular dynamics simulations of a system composed by uniaxial hard ellipsoids for different values of the aspect-ratio and packing fraction . We compare the molecular orientational-dependent structure factors previously calculated within the Percus-Yevick approximation with the numerical results. The agreement between theoretical and numerical results is rather satisfactory. We also show that, for specific orientational quantities, the molecular structure factors are sensitive to the particle shape and can be used to distinguish prolate from oblate ellipsoids. A first…
Connecting the collective behavior of disordered systems with local structure on the particle scale is an important challenge, for example in granular and glassy systems. Compounding complexity, in many scientific and industrial applications, particles are polydisperse, aspherical or even of varying shape. Here, we investigate a generalization of the classical kissing problem in order to understand the local building blocks of packings of aspherical grains. We numerically determine the densest local structures of uniaxial ellipsoids by minimizing the Set Voronoi cell volume around a given part…
The minimal ingredient to generate a biaxial liquid crystalline ordering is usually considered to be the strongly biaxial interactions breaking the cylindrical symmetry of the uniaxial molecules. Although there is no fundamental reason to forbid a biaxial ordering of pure uniaxial origin, it has been a long standing problem to find a robust demonstration of such phenomenon in systems of rod-like particles. We report here off-lattice Monte Carlo simulations of some new model systems of polar achiral rodlike ellipsoids which spontaneously exhibit novel biaxial smectic phases of pure uniaxial ori…
The stability of liquid crystal phases in presence of small amount of non-mesogenic impurities is of general interest for a large spectrum of technological applications and in the theories of binary mixtures. Starting from the known phase diagram of the hard ellipsoids systems, we propose a simple model and method to explore the stability of the nematic phase in presence of small impurities represented by hard spheres. The study is performed in the isobaric ensemble with Monte Carlo simulations.
An important aspect of molecular fluids is the relation between orientation and translation parts of the two-particle correlations. Especially the detailed knowledge of the influence of orientation correlations is needed to explain and calculate in detail the occurrence of a nematic phase. The simplest model system which shows both orientation and translation correlations is a system of hard ellipsoids. We investigate an isotropic fluid formed of hard ellipsoids with Percus-Yevick theory. Solving the Percus-Yevick equations self-consistently in the high density regime gives a clear criterion f…
Using results from colloid science we derive interaction potentials for computer simulations of mixtures of soft or hard ellipsoids of arbitrary shape and size. Our results are in many respects reminicent of potentials of the Gay-Berne type but have a well-defined microscopic interpretation and no adjustable parameters. Since our potentials require the calculation of similar variables, the modification of existing simulation codes for Gay-Berne potentials is straightforward. The computational performance should remain unaffected.
We have carried out computer simulations of overcompressed suspensions of hard monodisperse ellipsoids and observed their crystallization dynamics. The system was compressed very rapidly in order to reach the regime of slow, glass-like dynamics. We find that, although particle dynamics become sub-diffusive and the intermediate scattering function clearly develops a shoulder, crystallization proceeds via the usual scenario: nucleation and growth for small supersaturations, spinodal decomposition for large supersaturations. In particular, we compared the mobility of the particles in the regions …
Field-induced reorientation of colloidal particles is especially relevant to manipulate the optical properties of a nanomaterial for target applications. We have recently shown that surprisingly feeble external stimuli are able to transform uniaxial nematic liquid crystals (LCs) of cuboidal particles into biaxial nematic LCs. In the light of these results, here we apply an external field that forces the reorientation of colloidal cuboids in nematic LCs and sparks a uniaxial-to-biaxial texture switching. By Dynamic Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the unsteady-state reorientation dynamics…
Molecular fluids show rich and complicated dynamics close to the glass transition. Some of these observations are related to the fact that translational and orientational degrees of freedom couple in nontrivial ways. A model system which can serve as a paradigm to understand these couplings is a system of hard ellipsoids of revolution. To test this we compare at the ideal glass transition the static molecular correlators of a linear A-B Lennard-Jones molecule obtained from a molecular dynamics simulation with a selected fluid of hard ellipsoids for which the static correlators have been obtain…
The effect of out-of-plane orientational freedom on the orientational ordering properties of a monolayer of hard ellipsoids is studied using Parsons-Lee scaling approach and replica exchange Monte Carlo computer simulation. Prolate and oblate ellipsoids exhibit very different ordering properties, namely, the axes of revolution of prolate particles tend to lean out, while those of oblate ones prefer to lean into the confining plane. The driving mechanism of this is that the particles try to maximize the available free area on the confining surface, which can be achieved by minimizing the cross …
We investigate by means of continuum percolation theory and Monte Carlo simulations how spontaneous uniaxial symmetry breaking affects geometric percolation in dispersions of hard rod-like particles. If the particle aspect ratio exceeds about twenty, percolation in the nematic phase can be lost upon adding particles to the dispersion. This contrasts with percolation in the isotropic phase, where a minimum particle loading is always required to obtain system-spanning clusters. For sufficiently short rods, percolation in the uniaxial nematic mimics that of the isotropic phase, where the addition…
We introduce a novel algorithm to perform event-driven simulations of hard rigid bodies of arbitrary shape, that relies on the evaluation of the geometric distance. In the case of a monodisperse system of uniaxial hard ellipsoids,we perform molecular dynamics simulations varying the aspect-ratio X0 and the packing fraction phi. We evaluate the translational Dtrans and the rotational Drot diffusion coefficient and the associated isodiffusivity lines in the phi-X0 plane. We observe a decoupling of the translational and rotational dynamics which generates an almost perpendicular crossing of the D…
We studied the self-diffusion of colloidal ellipsoids in a monolayer near a flat wall by video microscopy. The image processing algorithm can track the positions and orientations of ellipsoids with sub-pixel resolution. The translational and rotational diffusions were measured in both the lab frame and the body frame along the long and short axes. The long-time and short-time diffusion coefficients of translational and rotational motions were measured as functions of the particle concentration. We observed sub-diffusive behavior in the intermediate time regime due to the caging of neighboring …
Monte Carlo simulations are performed for hard ellipsoids for a number of values of its semi-axes in the range $c/a \in \{0.1,10\}$. The isotropic phase results are compared to the Vega equation of state [Mol. Phys. {\bf 92} (1997) 651-665]. The position of the isotropic-nematic transition is also evaluated. The biaxial phase is seen to form only after the previous formation of a discotic phase.
We present a computer simulation study on the crystalline phases of hard ellipsoids of revolution. For aspect ratios greater than or equal to 3 the previously suggested stretched-fcc phase [D. Frenkel and B. M. Mulder, Mol. Phys. 55, 1171 (1985)] is replaced by a novel crystalline phase. Its unit cell contains two ellipsoids with unequal orientations. The lattice is simple monoclinic. The angle of inclination of the lattice, beta, is a very soft degree of freedom, while the two right angles are stiff. For one particular value of beta, the close-packed version of this crystal is a specimen of t…
We perform Monte Carlo simulations of a simplified two-dimensional model for colloidal hard spheres in an external uniaxial AC electric field. Experimentally, the external field induces dipole moments in the colloidal particles, which in turn form chains. We therefore approximate the system as composed of well formed chains of dipolar hard spheres of a uniform length. The dipolar interaction between colloidal spheres gives rise to an effective interaction between the chains, which we treat as disks in a plane, that includes a short range attraction and long range repulsion. Hence, the system f…
We investigate hard ellipsoids of revolution in a parameter regime where no long range nematic order is present but already finite size domains are formed which show orientational order. Domain formation leads to a substantial slowing down of a collective rotational mode which separates well from the usual microscopic frequency regime. A dynamic coupling of this particular mode into all other modes provides a general mechanism which explains an excess peak in spectra of molecular fluids. Using molecular dynamics simulation on up to 4096 particles and on solving the molecular mode coupling equa…
In this article we consider systems of parallel hard {\it superellipsoids}, which can be viewed as a possible interpolation between ellipsoids of revolution and cylinders. Superellipsoids are characterized by an aspect ratio and an exponent $α$ (shape parameter) which takes care of the geometry, with $α=1$ corresponding to ellipsoids of revolution, while $α=\infty$ is the limit of cylinders. It is well known that, while hard parallel cylinders exhibit nematic, smectic, and solid phases, hard parallel ellipsoids do not stabilize the smectic phase, the nematic phase transforming directly into a …
We present evidence from computer simulations for glassy dynamics in suspensions of monodisperse hard ellipsoids. In equilibrium, almost spherical ellipsoids show a first order transition from an isotropic phase to a rotator phase. When overcompressing the isotropic phase into the rotator regime, we observe super-Arrhenius slowing down of diffusion and relaxation, accompanied by two-step relaxation in positional and orientational correlators. The effects are strong enough for asymptotic laws of mode-coupling theory to apply. Glassy dynamics are unusual in monodisperse systems. Typically, polyd…
We present a computer simulation study of the crystalline phases of hard ellipsoids of revolution. A previous study [Phys. Rev. E, \textbf{75}, 020402 (2007)] showed that for aspect ratios $a/b\ge 3$ the previously suggested stretched-fcc phase [Mol. Phys., \textbf{55}, 1171 (1985)] is unstable with respect to a simple monoclinic phase with two ellipsoids of different orientations per unit cell (SM2). In order to study the stability of these crystalline phases at different aspect ratios and as a function of density we have calculated their free energies by thermodynamic integration. The integr…
To investigate the influence of orientational degrees of freedom onto the dynamics of molecular systems in its supercooled and glassy regime we have solved numerically the mode-coupling equations for hard ellipsoids of revolution. For a wide range of volume fractions $ϕ$ and aspect ratios $x_{0}$ we find an orientational peak in the center of mass spectra $χ_{000}^{''}(q,ω)$ and $ϕ_{000}^{''} (q,ω)$ about one decade below a high frequency peak. This orientational peak is the counterpart of a peak appearing in the quadrupolar spectra $χ_{22m}^{''}(q,ω)$ and $ϕ_{22m}^{''}(q,ω)$. The latter peak …
For hard ellipsoids of revolution we calculate the phase diagram for the idealized glass transition. Our equations cover the glass physics in the full phase space, for all packing fractions and all aspect ratios X$_0$. With increasing aspect ratio we find the idealized glass transition to become primarily be driven by orientational degrees of freedom. For needle or plate like systems the transition is strongly influenced by a precursor of a nematic instability. We obtain three types of glass transition lines. The first one ($ϕ_c^{(B)}$) corresponds to the conventional glass transition for sphe…
We present a numerical study on geometric percolation in liquid dispersions of hard slender colloidal particles subjected to an external orienting field. In the formulation and liquid-state processing of nanocomposite materials, the alignment of particles by external fields such as electric, magnetic or flow fields is practically inevitable, and often works against the emergence of large nanoparticle networks. Using continuum percolation theory in conjunction with Onsager theory, we investigate how the interplay between externally induced alignment and the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the …
The phase diagram of a polydisperse mixture of uniaxial rod-like and plate-like hard parallelepipeds is determined for aspect ratios $κ=5$ and 15. All particles have equal volume and polydispersity is introduced in a highly symmetric way. The corresponding binary mixture is known to have a biaxial phase for $κ=15$, but to be unstable against demixing into two uniaxial nematics for $κ=5$. We find that the phase diagram for $κ=15$ is qualitatively similar to that of the binary mixture, regardless the amount of polydispersity, while for $κ=5$ a sufficient amount of polydispersity stabilizes the b…
The ability of some liquids to vitrify during supercooling is usually seen as a consequence of the rates of crystal nucleation (and/or crystal growth) becoming small- thus a matter of kinetics. However there is evidence, dating back to the empirics of coal briquetting for maximum trucking efficiency, that ellipsoids pack efficiently when disordered. Noting that key studies of non-spherical object packing have never been followed from hard ellipsoids or spherocylinders (diatomics excepted) into the world of molecules with attractive forces, we have made a molecular dynamics MD study of crystal …
We use the Parsons Lee modification of Onsagers second virial theory within the restricted orientation approximation to analyse the phase behaviour of hard cylindrical rods confined in narrow pores Depending on the wall to wall separation we predict a number of distinctly different surface generated nematic phases including a biaxial planar nematic with variable number of layers a monolayer homeotropic and a hybrid T type structure For narrow pores we find evidence of two types of second order uniaxial biaxial transitions depending on the aspect ratio of the particles More specifically we obse…
We derive a microscopic equation of motion for the dynamical orientational correlators of molecular crystals. Our approach is based upon mode coupling theory. Compared to liquids we find four main differences: (i) the memory kernel contains Umklapp processes, (ii) besides the static two-molecule orientational correlators one also needs the static one-molecule orientational density as an input, where the latter is nontrivial, (iii) the static orientational current density correlator does contribute an anisotropic, inertia-independent part to the memory kernel, (iv) if the molecules are assumed …
We study translational and rotational diffusion of anisotropic gold nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed in the bulk of a nematic liquid crystal fluid host. Experimental data reveal strong anisotropy of translational diffusion with respect to the uniform far-field director, which is dependent on shape and surface functionalization of colloids as well as on their ground-state alignment. For example, elongated NPs aligned parallel to the far-field director translationally diffuse more rapidly along the director whereas diffusion of NPs oriented normal to the director is faster in the direction perpendi…
