We present simple arguments that detectors moving with constant acceleration (even acceleration for a finite time) should detect particles. The effect is seen to be universal. Moreover, detectors undergoing linear acceleration and uniform, circular motion both detect particles for the same physical reason. We show that if one uses a circularly orbiting electron in a constant external magnetic field as the Unruh--DeWitt detector, then the Unruh effect physically coincides with the experimentally verified Sokolov--Ternov effect.
On $\text{AdS}_2 \times \mathbb{S}^2$, we construct the two-point correlation functions for the ground and thermal states of a real Klein-Gordon field admitting generalized $(γ,v)$-boundary conditions. We follow the prescription recently outlined in [1] for two different choices of secondary solutions. For each of them, we obtain a family of admissible boundary conditions parametrized by $γ\in\left[0,\fracπ{2}\right]$. We study how they affect the response of a static Unruh-DeWitt detector. The latter not only perceives variations of $γ$, but also distinguishes between the two families of seco…
We report the existence of an Unruh like effect, for physical observers (cosmological and comoving observers) in the radiation dominated early universe, which is possible due to the discovery of a new vacuum state (referred here as the $T-$vacuum). Both the comoving and the cosmological observers, who are crucial in our understanding of cosmology, observe this $T-$vacuum as a particle excited state and are able to detect radiation due to particle creation. We draw a robust analogy with the Unruh effect, whereby -- (i) the physical observers here are closely analogous to the accelerated (Rindle…
We show that the Sokolov--Ternov effect -- the depolarization of particles in storage rings coming from synchrotron radiation due to spin flip transitions -- is physically equivalent to the Unruh effect for circular acceleration if one uses a spin 1/2 particle as the Unruh--DeWitt detector. It is shown that for the electron, with gyromagnetic number $g \approx 2$, the exponential contribution to the polarization, which usually characterizes the Unruh effect, is "hidden" in the standard Sokolov-Ternov effect making it hard to observe. Thus, our conclusions are different in detail from previous …
We present a general method to determine the entropy current of relativistic matter at local thermodynamic equilibrium in quantum statistical mechanics. Provided that the local equilibrium operator is bounded from below and its lowest lying eigenvector is non-degenerate, it is proved that, in general, the logarithm of the partition function is extensive, meaning that it can be expressed as the integral over a 3D space-like hypersurface of a vector current, and that an entropy current exists. We work out a specific calculation for a non-trivial case of global thermodynamic equilibrium, namely a…
It is argued that the Unruh effect may be interpreted as a duality of a theory on different backgrounds. This issue is revisited in String Theory in the path integral formalism. By using T-duality and the Unruh effect, the T-dual transformation for acceleration is investigated and a maximum effective physical acceleration for observers in String Theory is found.
Based on a discussion of the concepts of temperature, passivity and efficiency in the framework of quantum field theory, the physical interpretation of the Unruh effect is reviewed PACS: 03.70.+k, 04.70.Dy
We discuss how to formulate a condition for choosing the vacuum state of a quantum scalar field on a timelike hyperplane in the general boundary formulation (GBF) using the coupling to an Unruh-DeWitt detector. We explicitly study the response of an Unruh-DeWitt detector for evanescent modes which occur naturally in quantum field theory in the presence of the equivalent of a dielectric boundary. We find that the physically correct vacuum state has to depend on the physical situation outside of the boundaries of the spacetime region considered. Thus it cannot be determined by general principles…
We study quantum gravity signatures emerging from phenomenologically motivated multiscale models, spectral actions, and Causal Set Theory within the detector approach to the Unruh effect. We show that while the Unruh temperature is unaffected, Lorentz-invariant corrections to the two-point function leave a characteristic fingerprint in the induced emission rate of the accelerated detector. Generically, quantum gravity models exhibiting dynamical dimensional reduction exhibit a suppression of the Unruh rate at high energy while the rate is enhanced in Kaluza-Klein theories with compact extra di…
We study the detailed balance temperatures recorded along all classes of stationary, uniformly accelerated worldlines in four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, namely along (i) linear uniform acceleration, (ii) cusped, (iii) circular, (iv) catenary, and (v) helix worldlines, among which the Unruh temperature is the particular case for linear uniform acceleration. As a measuring device, we employ an Unruh-DeWitt detector, modeled as a qubit that interacts for a long time with a massless Klein-Gordon field in the vacuum state. The temperatures in each case (i) - (v) are functions of up to three i…
We investigate, from the point of view of a coaccelerated frame, the spontaneous excitation of a uniformly accelerated two-level atom interacting with a scalar field in a thermal state at a finite temperature $T$ and show that the same spontaneous excitation rate for the uniformly accelerated atom in the Minkowski vacuum obtained in the inertial frame can only be recovered in the coaccelerated frame assuming a thermal bath at the Fulling-Davies-Unruh temperature $T_{FDU}=a/2π$ for what appears to be the Minkowski vacuum to the inertial observer. Our discussion provides another example of a phy…
Given a local quantum field theory net A on the de Sitter spacetime dS^d, where geodesic observers are thermalized at Gibbons-Hawking temperature, we look for observers that feel to be in a ground state, i.e. particle evolutions with positive generator, providing a sort of converse to the Hawking-Unruh effect. Such positive energy evolutions always exist as noncommutative flows, but have only a partial geometric meaning, yet they map localized observables into localized observables. We characterize the local conformal nets on dS^d. Only in this case our positive energy evolutions have a comple…
Quantum steering is a perplexing feature at the heart of quantum mechanics that provides profound implications in understanding the nature of physical reality. On the other hand, the effect of relativistic features on quantum systems is vital in understanding the underlying foundations of physics. In this work, we study the effects of Unruh acceleration on the quantum steering of a two-qubit system. In particular, we consider the so-called quantum steering ellipsoid and the maximally-steered coherence in a non-inertial frame and find closed-form analytic expressions for the role of the Unruh a…
In the lack of a full-fledged theory of quantum gravity, I consider free, scalar, quantum fields on curved spacetimes to gain insight into the interaction between quantum and gravitational phenomena. I employ the Unruh-DeWitt detector approach to probe thermal, quantum effects on static, non-globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In this context, all physical observables depend on the choice of a boundary condition that cannot be singled-out, in general, without resorting to an experiment. Notwithstanding, the framework applied admits a large family of (Robin) boundary conditions and grants us physic…
In this work we consider the ontological status of the Unruh effect. Is it just a formal mathematical result? Or the temperature detected by an accelerating observer can lead to real physical effects such as phase transition. In order to clarify this issue we use the Thermalization Theorem to explore the possibility of having a restoration of the symmetry in a system with spontaneous symmetry breaking of an internal continuous symmetry as seen by an accelerating observer. We conclude that the Unruh effect is an ontic effect, rather than an epistemic one, giving rise, in the particular example …
The physical observables of quantum theory can be described by perturbation theory, which is often given by diverging power series. This divergence is connected to the existence of non-perturbative phenomena, where resurgence allows us to study this connection. Applying this idea to the WKB expansion, the exact WKB analysis gives a clear connection to non-perturbative phenomena. In this paper, we apply the exact WKB analysis to the Unruh effect and Hawking radiation. The mechanism we found in this paper is similar to the Schwinger effect of a constant electric field, where the background is st…
We investigate the Unruh effect for a massless scalar field in the two dimensional Minkowski space in the presence of a uniformly accelerated perfect mirror, with the trajectory of the mirror chosen in such a way that the mirror completely masks the Rindler horizon from the space-time region of interest. We find that the characteristic thermodynamical properties of the effect remain unchanged, i.e. the response of a uniformly co-accelerated Unruh detector and the distribution of the Rindler particles retain their thermal form. However, since in this setup there are no unobserved degrees of fre…
Particle detectors are an ubiquitous tool for probing quantum fields in the context of relativistic quantum information (RQI). We formulate the Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) particle detector model in terms of the path integral formalism. The formulation is able to recover the results of the model in general globally hyperbolic spacetimes and for arbitrary detector trajectories. Integrating out the detector's degrees of freedom yields a line defect that allows one to express the transition probability in terms of Feynman diagrams. Inspired by the light-matter interaction, we propose a gauge invariant det…
We make use of the tools of quantum information theory to shed light on the Unruh effect. A modal qubit appears as if subjected to quantum noise that degrades quantum information, as observed in the accelerated reference frame. The Unruh effect experienced by a mode of a free Dirac field, as seen by a relativistically accelerated observer, is treated as a noise channel, which we term the Unruh channel. We characterize this channel by providing its operator-sum representation, and study various facets of quantum correlations, such as, Bell inequality violations, entanglement, teleportation and …
We study the dynamics of an Unruh-DeWitt detector interacting with a massless scalar field in an arbitrary static spherically symmetric spacetimes whose metric is characterised by a single metric function $f(r)$. In order to obtain clean physical insights, we employ the derivative coupling variant of the Unruh-DeWitt model in (1+1) dimensions where powerful conformal techniques enable closed-form expressions for the vacuum two-point functions. Due to the generality of the formalism, we will be able to study a very general class of static spherically symmetric (SSS) background. We pick three ex…
We present novel methods to numerically address the problem of characterizing the response of particle detectors in curved spacetimes. These methods allow for the integration of the Wightman function, at least in principle, in rather general backgrounds. In particular we will use this tool to further understand the nature of conformal massless scalar Hawking radiation from a Schwarzschild black hole in anti-de Sitter space. We do that by studying an Unruh-DeWitt detector at rest above the horizon and in circular geodesic orbit. The method allows us to see that the response rate shows peaks at …
We study the Unruh effect for an observer with a finite lifetime, using the thermal time hypothesis. The thermal time hypothesis maintains that: (i) time is the physical quantity determined by the flow defined by a state over an observable algebra, and (ii) when this flow is proportional to a geometric flow in spacetime, temperature is the ratio between flow parameter and proper time. An eternal accelerated Unruh observer has access to the local algebra associated to a Rindler wedge. The flow defined by the Minkowski vacuum of a field theory over this algebra is proportional to a flow in space…
In this work we ask how an Unruh-DeWitt (UD) detector with harmonic oscillator internal degrees of freedom $Q$ measuring an evolving quantum matter field $Φ(\bm{x}, t)$ in an expanding universe with scale factor $a(t)$ responds. We investigate the detector's response which contains non-Markovian information about the quantum field squeezed by the dynamical spacetime. The challenge is in the memory effects accumulated over the evolutionary history. We first consider a detector $W$, the `\textsl{Witness}', which co-existed and evolved with the quantum field from the beginning. We derive a nonMar…
We study the beta functions of the quartic and Yukawa couplings of General Relativity and Unimodular Gravity coupled to the $λϕ^4$ and Yukawa theories with masses. We show that the General Relativity corrections to those beta functions as obtained from the 1PI functional by using the standard MS multiplicative renormalization scheme of Dimensional Regularization are gauge dependent and, further, that they can be removed by a non-multiplicative, though local, field redefinition. An analogous analysis is carried out when General Relativity is replaced with Unimodular Gravity. Thus we show that a…
We show in this pedagogical review that far from being "an apparent law of physics that stands by itself" (R. Bousso, Rev. Mod. Phys. 74 (2002), 825-874), the holographic principle (HP) is a straightforward consequence of the quantum information theory of separable systems. It provides a basis for the theories of measurement, time, and scattering. Principles equivalent to the HP appear in both computer science and the life sciences, suggesting that the HP is not just a fundamental principle of physics, but of all of science.
A definition is given and the physical meaning of quantum transformations of a non-commutative configuration space (quantum group coactions) is discussed. It is shown that non-commutative coordinates which are transformed by quantum groups are the natural generalization of the notion of a tensor operator for usual groups and that the quantum group coactions induce semigroups of transformations of states of a system. Two examples of non-commutative transformations and the corresponding semigroups are considered.
We demonstrate that a clear physical content and relevance can be attributed to the on-shell BRST-invariant mixed gluon--ghost condensate of mass dimension two which was recently proposed by the author. We argue that a gauge invariant observable is associated with the mixed condensate.
We report on recent results showing that the geometric phase can be used as a tool in the analysis of many different physical systems, as mixed boson systems, CPT and CP violations, Unruh effects and thermal states. We show that the geometric phases appearing in the time evolution of mixed meson systems like $B_{s}^{0}-\bar{B}_{s}^{0}$ and the $K^{0}-\bar{K}^{0}$ are linked to the parameter $z$ describing the $CPT$ violation. A non zero phase difference between particle and antiparticle arises only in the presence of $CPT$ symmetry breaking. Then the geometric phase can represent a completely …
Working with well known models in $(2+1)D$ we discuss the physics behind the deformation of the canonical structure of these theories. A new deformation is constructed linking the massless scalar field theory with the self-dual theory. This is the exact dual of the known deformation connecting the Maxwell theory with the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. Duality is used to establish a web of relations between the mentioned theories and a physical picture of the deformation procedure is suggested.
Following arXiv:1012.2107 we show that in global de Sitter space its isometry is broken by the loop IR divergences for any invariant vacuum state of the massive scalars. We derive kinetic equation in global de Sitter space. It follows from the Dyson-Schwinger equation of the Schwinger-Keldysh diagrammatic technique in IR limit and allows to understand the physical meaning and consequences of the loop IR divergences. In many respects the isometry breaking in global dS is similar to the one in the contracting Poincare patch of de Sitter space. Hence, as a warm up exercise we study the kinetic eq…
The Moyal and Voros formulations of non-commutative quantum field theory has been a point of controversy in the recent past. Here we address this issue in the context of non-commutative non-relativistic quantum mechanics. In particular we show that the two formulations simply correspond to two different representations associated with two different choices of basis on the quantum Hilbert space. From a mathematical perspective the two formulations are therefore completely equivalent, but we also argue that only the Voros formulaton admits a consistent physical interpretation. These consideratio…
To overcome the difficulties with the energy indefiniteness in field theories with higher derivatives, it is supposed to use the mechanical analogy, the Timoshenko theory of the transverse flexural vibrations of beams or rods well known in mechanical engineering. It enables one to introduce the notion of a "mechanical" energy in such field models that is wittingly positive definite. This approach can be applied at least to the higher derivative models which effectively describe the extended localized solutions in usual first order field theories (vortex solutions in Higgs models and so on). An…
Classical Electrodynamics is not a consistent theory because of its field inadequate behaviour in the vicinity of their sources. Its problems with the electron equation of motion and with non-integrable singularity of the electron self field and of its stress tensor are well known. These inconsistencies are eliminated if the discrete and localized (classical photons) character of the electromagnetic interaction is anticipatively recognized already in a classical context. This is possible, in a manifestly covariant way, with a new model of spacetime structure, shown in a previous paper $^{1}$, …
A unifying perspective on the Moyal and Voros products and their physical meanings has been recently presented in the literature, where the Voros formulation admits a consistent physical interpretation. We define a star product $\star$, in terms of an antisymmetric fixed matrix $Θ$, and an arbitrary symmetric matrix $Φ$, that is a generalization of the Moyal and the Voros products. We discuss the quantum mechanics and the physical meaning of the generalized star product.
