The relation between tidal interactions, starbursts, and the onset and/or fueling of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is a matter of debate. I Zw 1 is considered as the prototypical narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) and as one of the closest quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). With a clear spiral host and a small companion galaxy to the west, I Zw 1 is a possible example of minor-merger-related nuclear activity. This study investigates possible signs of a relation between merger process, star formation activity, and AGN properties in the case of I Zw 1. The morphology of I Zw 1 and nearby sources is investigated via high-resolution NIR images. Color trends in the host galaxy of I Zw 1 are discussed by means of optical-to-NIR color composites. Long-slit spectra of the QSO nucleus of I Zw 1 and of the two nearby sources to the north and the west of the I Zw 1 disk are analyzed. The data support the scenario of a tidal interaction between I Zw 1 and the small companion galaxy to the west. A concentration of blue color in the western part of the I Zw 1 host galaxy might be the manifestation of merger-induced star formation activity. Previous findings that the likely companion has an old evolved stellar population are substantiated by the new data. An extension to the west of the putative companion emerges as a separate source. The source to the north of the I Zw 1 disk is reconfirmed as a late-type foreground star. Lines in the nuclear K-band spectrum of I Zw 1 are discussed in comparison to data prior to this article and line fluxes are reported.
AIMS. To check whether the polar angle distribution of QSOs around nearby spiral galaxies is isotropic or not. METHODS. A statistical analysis of the polar angle distribution of large samples of QSOs from the SDSS survey and Monte Carlo simulations to calculate their significance are carried out. RESULTS. There is a clear excess of QSOs near the minor axis with respect to the major axis of nearby edge-on spiral galaxies, significant at a level 3.5-sigma up to angular distances of 3 deg. (or ~1.7 Mpc) from the centre of each galaxy. The significance is increased to 3.9-sigma with the z>0.5 QSOs…
The likely merger process and the properties of the stellar populations in the I Zw 1 host galaxy are analyzed on the basis of multi-wavelength observations (with the ISAAC camera at the Very Large Telescope (VLT/UT1) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), Chile (Paranal), with the interferometer of the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association (BIMA), USA (Hat Creek/California), and with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI), France) and N-body simulations. The data give a consistent picture of I Zw 1, with properties between those of ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and Q…
The paper presents an analysis of the nearby QSO host I Zw 1 based on new J-band imaging data, obtained with ISAAC at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). As one of the best-studied QSOs with exceptional properties lying between those of QSOs, narrow-line Seyfert 1s, and ultraluminous infrared galaxies, I Zw 1 is a prime candidate for a detailed case study of a QSO host. With its high angular resolution and sensitivity, the new J-band image provides strong evidence for an interaction between I Zw 1 and the western companion galaxy. We present a procedure f…
This paper addresses the global molecular gas properties of a representative sample of galaxies hosting low-luminosity quasistellar objects. An abundant supply of gas is necessary to fuel both the active galactic nucleus and any circum-nuclear starburst activity of QSOs. We selected a sample of nearby low-luminosity QSO host galaxies that is free of infrared excess biases. All objects are drawn from the Hamburg-ESO survey for bright UV-excess QSOs, have DEC>-30 degrees and redshifts that do not exceed z=0.06. The IRAM 30m telescope was used to measure the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) transition in para…
We observe with Keck/HIRES the z ~ 2.5 QSO triplet 1623+27 in order to explore on the scale of a Megaparsec the spatial clustering of C IV absorbers between adjacent sightlines. We find this signal to be significantly weaker than the clustering in velocity on corresponding scales along single sightlines, assuming that the relative velocity of absorbers is dominated by the Hubble flow. This indicates that small-scale clustering (200 km/s < Delta v < 600 km/s) of the C IV absorbers cannot be interpreted in terms of the positions of the absorbers in space, but must be considered as internal motio…
We present the first sub-kpc 0.7" (~ 850 pc) resolution 12CO(1-0) molecular line observations of the ISM in the host galaxy of the QSO I Zw 1. The observations were obtained with the BIMA mm-interferometer in its compact A configuration. The BIMA data are complemented by new observations of the 12CO(2-1) and 13CO(1-0) line with IRAM Plateau de Bure mm-interferometer (PdBI) at 0.9" and 1.9" resolution, respectively. These measurements, which are part of a multi-wavelength study of the host galaxy of I Zw 1, are aimed at comparing the ISM properties of a QSO host with those of nearby galaxies as…
We report on the analysis of the photometric and spectroscopic properties of a sample of 29 low redshift (z<0.6) QSOs for which both HST WFPC2 images and ultraviolet HST FOS spectra are available. For each object we measure the R band absolute magnitude of the host galaxy, the CIV (1550A) line width and the 1350A continuum luminosity. From these quantities we can estimate the black hole (BH) mass through the M(BH)-L(bulge) relation for inactive galaxies, and from the virial method based on the kinematics of the regions emitting the broad lines. The comparison of the masses derived from the two…
We discovered a significant anti-correlation between the mass of a supermassive black hole (SMBH), $M_{\rm BH}$, and the luminosity ratio of infrared to active galactic nuclei (AGN) Eddington luminosity, $L_{\rm IR}/L_{\rm Edd}$, over four orders of magnitude for ultraluminous infrared galaxies with type I Seyfert nuclei (type I ULIRGs) and nearby QSOs. This anti-correlation ($M_{\rm BH}$ vs. $L_{\rm IR}/L_{\rm Edd}$) can be interpreted as the anti-correlation between the mass of a SMBH and the rate of mass accretion onto a SMBH normalized by the AGN Eddington rate, $\dot{M}_{\rm BH}/\dot{M}_{…
We present an analysis of the proximity effect in a sample of ten 2 A resolution QSO spectra of the Ly alpha forest at <z> = 2.9. Rather than investigating variations in the number density of individual absorption lines we employ a novel technique that is based on the statistics of the transmitted flux itself. We confirm the existence of the proximity effect at the > 99 per cent confidence level. We derive a value for the mean intensity of the extragalactic background radiation at the Lyman limit of J = 3.5^{+3.5}_{-1.3} x 10^{-22} ergs/s/cm^2/Hz/sr. This value assumes that QSO redshifts measu…
The QSO 3C 48 and its host galaxy constitute a nearby template object of the proposed merger-driven evolutionary sequence from ULIRGs to QSOs. In this contribution multi-wavelength observations and N-body simulations studying the structural and compositional properties of this late-stage major merger will be presented. Key questions addressed will be the nature of the apparent second nucleus 3C 48A and absence of a counter tidal tail. The results will be used to review the role of 3C 48 in the ULIRG-QSO evolutionary scenario.
We present Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI 21cm emission images of the z=0.009 damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) absorber towards the QSO HS 1543+5921. The DLA has been earlier identified as a low surface brightness galaxy SBS 1543+593 at an impact parameter of ~ 400 pc to the QSO line of sight. The extremely low redshift of the absorber allows us to make spatially resolved images of the 21cm emission; besides the HI mass, this also enables us to determine the velocity field of the galaxy and, hence, to estimate its dynamical mass. We obtain a total HI mass of ~ 1.4x10^9 Msun, considerably sm…
The amplification caused by gravitational light bending by compact objects in a foreground galaxy can affect the apparent number density of background QSOs, as well as their distribution in the fields of galactic halos. In this work we investigate the number enhancement of QSOs in the fields of galactic halos caused by point mass lensing effect and singular isothermal lensing effect, and apply the microlensing effect due to dark compact objects in the halo to NGC 3628. NGC 3628 is a well-studied nearby edge-on Sbc peculiar galaxy, where QSOs are shown to be concentrated around the galaxy with …
Several recent studies show that bright, intermediate and high redshift optically and radio selected QSOs are positively correlated with nearby galaxies on a range of angular scales up to a degree. Obscuration by unevenly distributed Galactic dust can be ruled out as the cause, leaving weak statistical lensing as the physical process responsible. However the amplitude of correlations on < 1 degree scales is at least a factor of a few larger than lensing model predictions. A possible way to reconcile the observations and theory is to revise the weak lensing formalism. We extend the standard len…
We present the results of a survey for CO line emission from a sample of nearby QSO hosts taken from the Hamburg/ESO survey (HES) and the Veron-Cetty and Veron quasar catalogue. From a total of 39 observed sources we clearly detected 5 objects with >10sigma signals (HE 0108-4743, HE 0224-2834, J035818.7-612407, HE 1029-1831, HE 2211-3903). Further 6 sources show marginal detections on the 2sigma level.
We show that a cooled region of shocked supernova ejecta forms in a type II supernova-QSO wind interaction, and has a density, an ionization parameter, and a column density compatible with those inferred for the high ionization component of the broad emission line regions in QSOs. The calculations are based on the assumption that the ejecta flow is described initially by a similarity solution investigated by Chevalier (1982) and Nadyozhin (1985) and is spherically symmetric. Heating and cooling appropriate for gas irradiated by a nearby powerful continuum source is included in our model, toget…
2 micron broad- and narrow-band imaging with the Gemini-N telescope of five z~4.7 QSOs, has resolved both the host galaxies and [O II] emission-line gas. The resolved fluxes of the host galaxies fall within the extrapolated spread of the K-z relationship for radio galaxies at lower redshifts, and their resolved morphology is irregular. The [O II] images indicate knots coincident with many continuum features and also some bright jet-like features near the nucleus. The line emission total fluxes indicate overall equivalent widths of 5 to 10 A at rest wavelengths. Two of the QSOs are in a local e…
We describe J,H,K deep imaging of 90 arcmin fields around 4 QSOs and one Radio galaxy at redshifts in the range 0.06 to 0.30, and show their images, luminosity profiles, and NIR 2-colour diagrams of objects. We find that the QSO hosts are all resolved, and compare them with previous CCD images. The host galaxy colours are consistent with old and young stellar populations at the QSO redshift. The colours of nearby galaxies suggest that all the AGN live in groups of generally smaller companion galaxies, mostly with evolved populations at the same redshift. The two radio-loud objects live in rich…
QSOs are believed to be powered by accretion onto massive black holes (BHs). In this paper, assuming that each central BH in nearby galaxies has experienced the QSO phase and ignoring BH mergers, we establish a relation between the QSO luminosity function (LF) and the local BH mass function (MF). The QSOLF is jointly controlled by the luminosity evolution of individual QSOs and the triggering history of the accretion onto seed BHs. By comparing the time integral of the QSOLF with that inferred from local BHs, we separate the effect of the luminosity evolution of individual QSOs from the effect…
The relationship between variability, luminosity and redshift in the South Galactic Pole QSO sample is examined in an effort to disentangle the effects of luminosity and redshift in the amplitude of the optical variations. The anticorrelation between variability and luminosity found by other authors is confirmed. Our analysis also supports claims that variability increases with redshift, most likely due to an anticorrelation between variability and wavelength. In particular, our parametric fits show that the QSO variability-wavelength relation is consistent with that observed in low-luminosity…
We report on deep imaging in 2 filters with the PC2 camera of HST, of five QSOs at redshift ~2, with a range of optical and radio luminosity. The observations included a suite of PSF observations which were used to construct new PSF models, described elsewhere by Dumont et al. The new PSF models were used to remove the QSO nucleus from the images. We find that the host galaxies have resolved flux of order 10% of the QSO nuclei, and are generally luminous and blue, indicating active star-formation. While most have clearly irregular morphologies, the bulk of the flux can be modelled approximatel…
We present the observational results of our search for emission-line galaxies (ELG) towards nearby voids. In order to find ELG, we started a survey using the IIIa-J objective prism plates from the Hamburg QSO Survey. The plates are digitized and an automatic procedure was applied to select the candidates. Digitized direct plates were used to determine coordinates and to reject overlaps between spectra. A total area of 1248 square degrees was scanned, distributed in four different regions. All the selected objects were observed with follow-up spectroscopy. We have obtained a final sample of 203…
The host galaxies of six nearby QSOs are studied on the basis of high resolution HST optical images and spatially resolved VLT slit spectra. The gas ionization and velocity are mapped as a function of the distance to the central QSO. In the majority of the cases, the QSO significantly contributes to the gas ionization in its whole host galaxy, and sometimes even outside. Reflection or scattering of the QSO \ha line from remote regions of the galaxy is detected in several instances. The line shifts show that, in all cases, the matter responsible for the light reflection moves away from the QSO,…
We examine the clustering of galaxies around a sample of 20 luminous low redshift (z<0.30) quasars observed with the Wide Field Camera-2 on the Hubble Space Telescope. The HST resolution makes possible galaxy identification brighter than V=23.5 and as close as 2'' to the quasar. We find a significant enhancement of galaxies within a projected separation of < 100 kpc/h of the quasars. If we model the qso/galaxy correlation function as a power law with a slope given by the galaxy/galaxy correlation function, we find that the ratio of the qso/galaxy to galaxy/galaxy correlation functions is $3.8\…
We present multicolour images of the hosts of three z=2 QSOs previously detected in R-band by our group. The luminosities, colours and sizes of the hosts overlap with those of actively star-forming galaxies in the nearby Universe. Radial profiles over the outer resolved areas roughly follow de Vaucouleur or exponential disk laws. These properties give support to the host galaxy interpretation of the extended light around QSOs at high-redshift. The rest-frame UV colours and upper limits derived for the rest-frame UV-optical colours are inconsistent with the hypothesis of a scattered halo of lig…
Quasar absorption lines provide detailed information on the chemical, kinematic, and ionization conditions in galaxies and their environments, and provide a means for studying the evolution of these conditions back to the epoch of the first quasars. Among the collection of absorbing structures along the lines of sight to quasars there is an evolutionary sequence of galaxies that represent predecessors of the Milky Way and provide a direct view of its history. Absorption spectra of lines of sight through the Milky Way and through nearby galaxies reveal a variety of chemical species, ionization …
The Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) has discovered a jet-like structure associated with a newly recognized QSO at redshift z=1.866. The system was 9.4 arcmin off-axis during an observation of 3C 207. Although significantly distorted by the mirror PSF, we use both a raytrace and a nearby bright point source to show that the X-ray image must arise from some combination of point and extended sources, or else from a minimum of three distinct point sources. We favor the former situation, as three unrelated sources would have a small probability of occurring by chance in such a close alignme…
We present results of a Gemini adaptive optics (AO) imaging program to investigate the host galaxies of typical QSOs at z~2. Our aim is to study the host galaxies of typical, L*_qso QSOs at the epoch of peak QSO and star formation activity. The large database of faint QSOs provided by the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey allows us to select a sample of QSOs at z=1.75-2.5 which have nearby (<12 arcsecond separation) bright stars suitable for use as AO guide stars. We have observed a sample of 9 QSOs. The images of these sources have AO corrected full-width at half-maximum of between 0.11 and 0.25 arcsec…
We carried out a target survey for Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) around QSO SDSS J0211-0009 at z=4.87. The deep and wide broadband and narrowband imaging simultaneously revealed the perspective structure of these two high-z populations. The LBGs without Ly-alpha emission form a filamentary structure including the QSO, while the LAEs are distributed around the QSO but avoid it within a distance of ~4.5Mpc. On the other hand, we serendipitously discovered a protocluster with a significant concentration of LBGs and LAEs where no strongly UV ionizing source such as a …
We present optical spectroscopy of the host galaxies of 4 QSO's: PG1444+407, PKS 2349-147, 3C 323.1, and 4C 31.63 having a redshift range (0.1 < z < 0.3). The spectra were obtained at the Keck Observatory with the LRIS instrument offset 2-4 arcseconds from the nucleus at several position angles in each galaxy. The objects close to 3C 323.1 and PKS 2349-147 have the same redshifts of their nearby QSOs and appear to be the nuclei of galaxies in the final states of merging with the host galaxies. The spectra of the hosts show some variety: PKS 2349-147 and 3C 323.1 show strong off-nuclear emissio…
We report -as a part of a long-term study of mergers and IR QSOs- detailed spectroscopic evidences for outflow (OF) and/or Wolf Rayet features in: (i) low velocity OF in the ongoing mergers NGC 4038/39 and IRAS 23128-5919; (ii) extreme velocity OF (EVOF) in the QSOs IRAS 01003-2238 and IRAS 13218+0552; (iii) OF and EVOF in a complete sample of ultra-luminous IR galaxies/QSOs ("The IRAS 1 Jy MKO-KPNO Survey", of 118 objects). We found EVOF in IRAS 11119+3257, 14394+5332, 15130+1958 and 15462-0450. The OF components detected in these objects were mainly associated to starburst processes: i.e., t…
This paper provides a general reference for deriving the ionizations and metal abundances for absorption-line clouds in photoionization equilibrium with a QSO spectrum. The results include a quantitative assessment of the theoretical uncertainties and firm lower limits on the metallicities when no ionization constraints are available. The calculations applied to the best available column densities for QSO intrinsic absorbers support previous studies; there is strong evidence for super-solar metallicities in broad absorption line (BAL) and at least some ``associated'' (z_a~z_e) absorption regio…
Two new samples of QSOs have been constructed from recent surveys to test the hypothesis that the redshift distribution of bright QSOs is periodic in $\log(1+z)$. The first of these comprises 57 different redshifts among all known close pairs or multiple QSOs, with image separations $\leq$ 10\arcsec, and the second consists of 39 QSOs selected through their X-ray emission and their proximity to bright comparatively nearby active galaxies. The redshift distributions of the samples are found to exhibit distinct peaks with a periodic separation of $\sim 0.089 $ in $\log(1+z)$ identical to that cl…
The quasar HE 0047-1756, at z=1.67, is found to be split into two images 1.44" apart by an intervening galaxy acting as a gravitational lens. The flux ratio for the two components is roughly 3.5:1, depending slightly upon wavelength. The lensing galaxy is seen on images obtained at 800 nm and 2.1 μ; there is also a nearby faint object which may be responsible for some shear. The spectra of the two quasar images are nearly identical, but the emission line ratio between the two components scale differently from the continuum. Moreover, the fainter component has a bluer continuum slope than the b…
We present the first results of a survey designed to understand the origin of the Lyman alpha-forest absorption systems at low redshift. Using the WYFFOS and HYDRA multi-fibre spectrographs on the WHT and WIYN telescopes, we have identified 51 galaxies brighter than b_j=18.5 within 30 arcmins of the sightline of the QSO 1821+643. We find three galaxies within 500 h-1 kpc of the QSO sightline; the nearest galaxy is 104 h-1 kpc away from the line of sight, and is at the same redshift as a strong Lyman alpha absorption line. The remaining two galaxies have no corresponding absorption to extremely…
(ABRIDGED) Gaseous halos of nine nearby galaxies (with redshifts cz < 6000 km/s) were probed at large galactocentric radii using background quasars observed with HST GHRS and STIS. The projected quasar-galaxy separations range from 55 to 387 h^{-1}_{75} kpc. Lyαabsorption lines were successfully detected in the spectra of five quasars, at impact parameters of up to 170 h^{-1}_{75} kpc from the center of the nearby galaxy, and in each case at wavelengths consistent with the galaxy's redshift. Our observations include the lowest redshift Lyαlines detected to date. HI velocity fields were obtaine…
We report near-infrared (primarily H-band) adaptive optics (AO) imaging with the Gemini-N and Subaru Telescopes, of a representative sample of 32 nearby (z<0.3) QSOs selected from the Palomar-Green (PG) Bright Quasar Survey (BQS), in order to investigate the properties of the host galaxies. 2D modeling and visual inspection of the images shows that ~36% of the hosts are ellipticals, \~39% contain a prominent disk component, and ~25% are of undetermined type. 30% show obvious signs of disturbance. The mean M_H(host) = -24.82 (2.1L_H*), with a range -23.5 to -26.5 (~0.63 to 10 L_H*). At <L_H*, a…
One aspect of supernova remnant evolution that is relatively unstudied is the influence of an AGN environment. A high density ambient medium and a nearby powerful continuum source will assist the cooling of shocked ejecta and swept-up gas. Motion of the surrounding medium relative to the remnant will also affect the remnant morphology. In an extension to previous work we have performed 2D hydrodynamical calculations of SNR evolution in an AGN environment, and have determined the evolutionary behaviour of cold gas in the remnant. The cold gas will contribute to the observed broad line emission …
We simulated both the matter and light (galaxy) distributions in a wedge of the universe and calculated the gravitational lensing magnification caused by the mass along the line of sight of galaxies and galaxy groups identified in sky surveys. A large volume redshift cone containing cold dark matter particles mimics the expected cosmological matter distribution in a flat universe with low matter density and a cosmological constant. We generate a mock galaxy catalogue from the matter distribution and identify thousands of galaxy groups in the luminous sky projection. We calculate the expected m…
We report a serendipitous detection of rapid, large amplitude flux density variations in the highly core-dominated, flat-spectrum radio quasar 1156+295 during an observing session at the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). The source was observed as a part of the MOJAVE survey programme with the VLBA at 15 GHz on February 5, 2007. Large amplitude variability in the correlated flux density, unexplainable in terms of the source structure, was first discovered while processing the data, and later confirmed by calibrating the antenna gains using 24 other sources observed in the experiment. The source…
We present here the discovery of rapid, large amplitude intraday variability in the compact flat-spectrum radio quasar 1156+295. The detection of 40% flux density variations at 15 GHz on a timescale of only 2.7 hours was serendipitously made when the source was observed with the Very Long Baseline Array as a part of the MOJAVE survey programme on February 5, 2007. Intraday variability on timescales of a few hours or less is rare, and there exist very few sources that show large-amplitude variations on a timescale as short as what is now observed for 1156+295. The shape of the visibility functi…
We report the detection of a nearby emission-line companion to the z=4.695 quasar BR1202-0725. Deep narrow-band exposures on this field from the UH 2.2 m show a Ly alpha flux of 1.5\times\ten{-16} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1}. High-resolution HST WFC2 imaging in the F814W filter band shows continuum structure near the emission position, at 2.6" NW of the quasar, corresponding to a projected separation of ~7.5 h^{-1} kpc for \qnought=0.5, where h=\hnought/100\kms Mpc^{-1}. We discuss possible explanations for the combined line and color properties. The ionization is most likely produced by the quasar, b…
We present HST STIS observations of four quasar pairs with redshifts 0.84<z_em<1.56 and angular separation 2-3 arcmin corresponding to ~ 1-1.5 h^-1_50 Mpc transverse proper distance at z ~ 0.9. We study the distribution of velocity differences between nearest neighbor HI Lyman_alpha absorption lines detected in the spectra of adjacent QSOs in order to search for the possible correlation caused by the extent or the clustering properties of the structures traced by the absorption lines over such a scale. The significance of the correlation signal is determined by comparison with Monte-Carlo simu…
Data are given for 16 extragalactic objects (predominantly AGN) behind the Magellanic Clouds and for 146 quasar candidates behind the nearby galaxies NGC 45, 185, 253, 2366, 2403 and 6822, IC 1613, M31 and M33. The Magellanic Cloud objects were identified by their X-ray emission, and precise optical and X-ray positions and optical photometry and spectra are presented for all of these. The quasar candidates surrounding the other nearby galaxies were identified through a CFHT slitless spectral survey. Although redshifts for only eight of these candidates have been obtained, previous observations…
Ground-based & HST images of the nearby galaxy SBS 1543+593 (z=0.009) show it to be a Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxy with a central surface brightness of mu_B(0)=23.2 mag/arcsec-2 and scale length 0.9 h-1 kpc, values typical for the local LSB galaxy population. The galaxy lies directly in front of the QSO HS 1543+5921 (z=0.807); an HST STIS spectrum of the quasar reveals a damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) line at the redshift of the interloper with an HI column density of log N(HI) = 20.35, as well as several low-ionization metal lines with strengths similar to those found in the Milky Way inters…
With 40 ks of Chandra ACIS-S3 exposure, new information on both the starburst and QSO components of the X-ray emission of Markarian 231, an ultraluminous infrared galaxy and Broad Absorption Line QSO, has been obtained. The bulk of the X-ray luminosity is emitted from an unresolved nuclear point source, and the spectrum is remarkably hard with the majority of the flux emitted above 2 keV. Most notably, significant nuclear variability (a decrease of ~45% in approximately 6 hours) at energies above 2 keV indicates that Chandra has probed within light hours of the central black hole. Though we co…
The Hubble Deep Field South (HDFS) has been recently selected and the observations are planned for October 1998. We present a high resolution (FWHM $\simeq 14$ \kms) spectrum of the quasar J2233--606 ($z_{em}\simeq2.22$) which is located 5.1 arcmin East of the HDFS. The spectrum obtained with the New Technology Telescope redward of the Lyman--$α$ emission line covers the spectral range 4386--8270 Å. This range corresponds to redshift intervals for CIV and MgII intervening systems of $z=1.83-2.25$ and $z=0.57-1.95$ respectively. The data reveal the presence of two complex intervening CIV system…
The intense UV radiation from a highly luminous QSO should excite fluorescent Ly-alpha emission from any nearby neutral hydrogen clouds. We present a very deep narrow-band search for such emission near the z=2.168 quasar PKS 0424-131, obtained with the Taurus Tunable Filter on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. By working in the UV, at high spectral resolution and by using charge shuffling, we have been able to reach surface brightness limits as faint as 4.7E-19 erg/cm^2/s/arcsec^2. No fluorescent Ly-alpha emission is seen, whereas QSO absorption-line statistics suggest that we should have seen ~…
We report the serendipitous discovery of an "Einstein Ring" in the optical band from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data and associated four images of a background source. The lens galaxy appears to be a nearby dwarf spheroid at a redshift of 0.0375$\pm$0.002. The lensed quasar is at a redshift of 0.6842$\pm$0.0014 and its multiple images are distributed almost 360$^{o}$ around the lens nearly along a ring of radius $\sim$6."0. Single component lens models require a mass of the galaxy of almost 10$^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$ within 6".0 from the lens center. With the available data we are unable t…
A comprehensive set of all available magnitudes, colors and redshifts for optically identified QSO absorbers is compiled from the literature. This results in a largely unbiased sample of galaxies at high redshifts, the size of the sample being reasonably large to allow for a first comparison with galaxy evolution models. We use our evolutionary spectral synthesis models describing various spectral types of galaxies with appropriate star formation histories. For a standard cosmology H0=50, Omega0=1, we find that all identified QSO absorbers up to a redshift about z=2 do fall within the evolving…
We report the detection of four images in the recently discovered lensed QSO RX J0911.4+0551. With a maximum angular separation of 3.1", it is the quadruply imaged QSO with the widest known angular separation. Raw and deconvolved data reveal an elongated lens galaxy. The observed reddening in at least two of the four QSO images suggests differential extinction by this lensing galaxy. We show that both an ellipticity of the galaxy (epsilon_{min}=0.075) and an external shear (gamma_{min}=0.15) from a nearby mass has to be included in the lensing potential in order to reproduce the complex geomet…
Using the IRAM 30m telescope, we have detected the CO J=2-1, 4-3, 5-4, and 6-5 emission lines in the millimeter-bright, blank-field selected AGN COSMOS J100038+020822 at redshift z=1.8275. The sub-local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) excitation of the J=4 level implies that the gas is less excited than that in typical nearby starburst galaxies such as NGC253, and in the high-redshift quasars studied to date, such as J1148+5251 or BR1202-0725. Large velocity gradient (LVG) modeling of the CO line spectral energy distribution (CO SED; flux density vs. rotational quantum number) yields H2 densit…
The increasing availability of high quality spectra of QSO absorption line systems at resolutions of only a few km/s is expected to facilitate the translation of the kinematics of components comprising the lines into the spatial distribution of gas around an absorbing galaxy. In this Letter, we present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectra of Q1219+047, a QSO whose sightline passes 21 h-1 kpc from the center of M61, through the outer regions of an extended H I disk. We detect complex Mg II absorption, spanning a velocity range of approximately 300 km/s, and strong C IV absorption; these are the…
We use new UV and optical spectra and an archival HST-WFPC2 image to study the z_a~z_e absorber in the z_e = 0.20 QSO PKS 2135-147. The UV spectra, obtained with HST-FOS, show strong z_a~z_e absorption lines of C IV, N V, O VI, Ly-alpha and Ly-beta. The z_a~z_e line profiles are resolved, with deconvolved FWHM of 270 to 450 km/s. Lower limits on the total column densities are of order 10^15 cm-2 for all ions. If the absorber is photoionized by the QSO and the derived relative columns in C IV and H I are roughly correct, then the metallicity must be at least solar. The location of the z_a~z_e a…
We have used STIS aboard HST to search for Lyman-alpha (Lya) absorption in the outer regions of nine nearby (cz<6000 km/s) galaxies using background QSOs and AGN as probes. The foreground galaxies are intercepted between 26 and 199 h-1 kpc from their centers, and in all cases we detect Lya within +/-500 km/s of the galaxies' systemic velocities. The intervening galaxies have a wide range of luminosities, from M_B = -17.1 to -20.0, and reside in various environments: half the galaxies are relatively isolated, the remainder form parts of groups or clusters of varying richness. The equivalent wid…
We present high-resolution imaging and low-resolution spectroscopy of the BL Lac object PKS 0537-441 (z = 0.893) and its environment. The observations were designed to clarify, whether the properties of PKS 0537-441 are affected by gravitational microlensing, or whether PKS 0537-441 and its environment act as a lensing system itself. Our observations show that neither case seems to be likely. We did not find a galaxy along the line-of-sight to the BL Lac as claimed previously, our spectroscopy shows that none of the four closest companion galaxies is at high redshift. Two of the four nearby co…
Spectra of the QSO pair Q0307-195A,B have been obtained in the Ly-alpha Forest (3660 - 3930 A) and C IV (4720 - 4850 A) regions with a FWHM resolution between 0.7 and 0.5 A. 46 lines have been detected in the spectrum of object A while 36 in the spectrum of object B, of them 29 and 20 were identified as Ly-alpha absorptions respectively. The present observations have been supplemented with data of comparable quality on other 7 QSO pairs available in the literature to give an enlarged sample of 217 Ly-alpha lines with rest equivalent width W_o > 0.3 A. The analysis of the hits (i.e. when an abs…
We have used STIS aboard HST to search for Lyman-alpha (Lya) absorption lines in the outer regions of eight nearby galaxies using background QSOs and AGN as probes. Lya lines are detected within a few hundred km/s of the systemic velocity of the galaxy in all cases. We conclude that a background line-of-sight which passes within 26-200 h-1 kpc of a foreground galaxy is likely to intercept low column density neutral hydrogen with log N(HI) >~ 13.0. The ubiquity of detections implies a covering factor of ~ 100% for low N(HI) gas around galaxies within 200 h-1 kpc. We discuss the difficulty in tr…
The quasar in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDFS), J2233-606 (z=2.23) has been exhaustively observed by ground based telescopes and by the STIS spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope at low, medium and high resolution in the spectral interval from 1120 A to 10000 A. This very large base-line represents a unique opportunity to study in detail the distribution of clouds associated with emitting structures in the field of the quasar and in nearby fields already observed as part of the HDFS campaign. Here we report the main properties of the Lyman-alpha clouds in the intermediate redshift…
We have used the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard HST to measure a sulfur abundance of [S/H] = -0.41 +/-0.06 in the interstellar medium (ISM) of the nearby damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) absorbing galaxy SBS 1543+593. A direct comparison between this QSO absorption line abundance on the one hand, and abundances measured from HII region emission line diagnostics on the other, yield the same result: the abundance of sulfur in the neutral ISM is in good agreement with that of oxygen measured in an HII region 3 kpc away. Our result contrasts with those of other recent studies which hav…
We use the extensive public archive of ROSAT High Resolution Imager (HRI) observations to carry out a statistical investigation of the X-ray properties of nearby galaxies. Specifically we focus on the sample of 486 bright (B_T < 12.5) northern galaxies studied by Ho, Filippenko and Sargent (HFS) in the context of their exploration of the optical spectroscopic properties of nearby galactic nuclei. Over 20% of HFS galaxies are encompassed in ROSAT HRI fields of reasonable (> 10ks) exposure. The X-ray sources detected within the optical extent of each galaxy are categorised as either nuclear or n…
