The induced Einstein equation on a perturbed brane in the Induced Matter Theory is re-analyzed. We indicate that in a conformally flat background, the local quantum corrections to the Einstein equation can be obtained via the IMT. Using the FRW metric as the 4D gravitational model, we show that the classical fluctuations of the brane may be related to the quantum corrections to the classical Einstein equation. In other words, the induced Einstein equation on the perturbed brane correspond with the semiclassical Einstein equation.
In semiclassical gravity the back-reaction of the classical gravitational field interacting with quantum matter fields is described by the semiclassical Einstein equations. A criterion for the validity of semiclassical gravity based on the stability of the solutions of the semiclassical Einstein equations with respect to quantum metric perturbations is discussed. The two-point quantum correlation functions for the metric perturbations can be described by the Einstein-Langevin equation obtained in the framework of stochastic gravity. These correlation functions agree, to leading order in the la…
In the present paper we study the Hawking radiation as a quantum tunneling effect of spin-$1$ particles from a five-dimensional, spherically symmetric, Einstein-Yang-Mills-Gauss-Bonnet (5D EYMGB) black hole. We solve the Proca equation (PE) by applying the WKB approximation and separation of variables via Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) equation which results in a set of five differential equations, and reproduces in this way, the Hawking temperature. In the second part of this paper, we extend our results beyond the semiclassical approximation. In particular, we derive the logarithmic correction to the …
We introduce a semiclassical Einstein-Langevin equation as a consistent dynamical equation for a first order perturbative correction to semiclassical gravity. This equation includes the lowest order quantum stress-energy fluctuations of matter fields as a source of classical stochastic fluctuations of the gravitational field. The Einstein-Langevin equation is explicitly solved around one of the simplest solutions of semiclassical gravity: Minkowski spacetime with a conformal scalar field in its vacuum state. We compute the two-point correlation function of the linearized Einstein tensor. This …
The Einstein-Langevin equation is a perturbative correction to the semiclassical Einstein equation which takes into account the lowest order quantum fluctuations of the matter stress-energy tensor. It predicts classical stochastic fluctuations in the metric field which may describe some of the remnant gravitational fluctuations after the process of environment induced decoherence driving the quantum to classical transition of gravity.
In this paper we explain how 4-dimensional general relativity and in particular, the Einstein equation, emerge from the spinfoam amplitude in loop quantum gravity. We propose a new limit which couples both the semiclassical limit and continuum limit of spinfoam amplitudes. The continuum Einstein equation emerges in this limit. Solutions of Einstein equation can be approached by dominant configurations in spinfoam amplitudes. A running scale is naturally associated to the sequence of refined triangulations. The continuum limit corresponds to the infrared limit of the running scale. An important…
We discuss the stability of semiclassical gravity solutions with respect to small quantum corrections by considering the quantum fluctuations of the metric perturbations around the semiclassical solution. We call the attention to the role played by the symmetrized two-point quantum correlation function for the metric perturbations, which can be naturally decomposed into two separate contributions: intrinsic and induced fluctuations. We show that traditional criteria on the stability of semiclassical gravity are incomplete because these criteria based on the linearized semiclassical Einstein eq…
In the two-dimensional framework, the surface gravity of a (classical) black hole is independent of its mass $M$. As a consequence, the Hawking temperature and outflux are also independent of $M$ at the large-$M$ limit. (This contrasts with the four-dimensional framework, in which the surface gravity and temperature scale as 1/M.) However, when the semiclassical backreaction effects on the black-hole geometry are taken into account, the surface gravity is no longer $M$-independent, and the same applies to the Hawking temperature and outflux. This effect, which vanishes at the large-$M$ limit, …
We consider the semiclassical Einstein equations (SEE) in the presence of a quantum scalar field with self-interaction $λϕ^4$. Working in the Hartree truncation of the two-particle irreducible (2PI) effective action, we compute the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field, which act as a source of the SEE. We obtain the renormalized SEE by implementing a consistent renormalization procedure. We apply our results to find self-consistent de Sitter solutions to the SEE in situations with or without spontaneous breaking of the $Z_2$-symmetry.
We propose a criterion for the validity of semiclassical gravity (SCG) which is based on the stability of the solutions of SCG with respect to quantum metric fluctuations. We pay special attention to the two-point quantum correlation functions for the metric perturbations, which contain both intrinsic and induced fluctuations. These fluctuations can be described by the Einstein-Langevin equation obtained in the framework of stochastic gravity. Specifically, the Einstein-Langevin equation yields stochastic correlation functions for the metric perturbations which agree, to leading order in the l…
In this essay, we qualitatively demonstrate how small non-perturbative corrections are a necessary addition to semiclassical gravity's path integral. We use this to discuss implications for Hawking's information paradox and the bags of gold paradox.
We consider the classical stochastic fluctuations of spacetime geometry induced by quantum fluctuations of massless non-conformal matter fields in the Early Universe. To this end, we supplement the stress-energy tensor of these fields with a stochastic part, which is computed along the lines of the Feynman-Vernon and Schwinger-Keldysh techniques; the Einstein equation is therefore upgraded to a so called Einstein-Langevin equation. We consider in some detail the conformal fluctuations of flat spacetime and the fluctuations of the scale factor in a simple cosmological modelintroduced by Hartle,…
We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions of the semiclassical Einstein equation in flat cosmological spacetimes driven by a quantum massive scalar field with arbitrary coupling to the scalar curvature. In the semiclassical approximation, the backreaction of matter to curvature is taken into account by equating the Einstein tensor to the expectation values of the stress-energy tensor in a suitable state. We impose initial conditions for the scale factor at finite time and we show that a regular state for the quantum matter compatible with these initial conditions can be chosen. Contributi…
Using both the Born-Oppenheimer idea and the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation of wavefunction we represent in a different way the semiclassical quantum gravity from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in an oscillating regime which can preserve completely the unitary quantum evolution of a matter field at the expense of a nonlinear gravitational field equation, but has the same asymptotic limit as the others. We apply the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation to the nonlinear gravitational field equation to develop a perturbation method to find the quantum corrections of a matter field to the gravity. The semi…
Whereas semiclassical gravity is based on the semiclassical Einstein equation with sources given by the expectation value of the stress-energy tensor of quantum fields, stochastic semiclassical gravity is based on the Einstein-Langevin equation, which has in addition sources due to the noise kernel. In the first part, we describe the fundamentals of this new theory via two approaches: the axiomatic and the functional. In the second part, we describe three applications of stochastic gravity theory. First, we consider metric perturbations in a Minkowski spacetime: we compute the two-point correla…
The entropy of apparent horizons is derived using coherent states or semiclassical states in quantum gravity. The leading term is proportional to area for large horizons, and the correction terms differ according to the details of the graph which is used to regularise the quantum gravity phase space variables.
Environment interaction may induce stochastic semiclassical dynamics in open quantum systems. In the gravitational context, stress-energy fluctuations of quantum matter fields give rise to a stochastic behaviour in the spacetime geometry. Einstein-Langevin equation is a suitable tool to take these effects into account when addressing the back-reaction problem in semiclassical gravity. We analyze within this framework the generation of gravitational fluctuations during inflation, which are of great interest for large-scale structure formation in cosmology.
We propose to formulate a theory for Classical Stochastic Gravity for certain applications in Astrophysics and Cosmology. This involves the Langevin approach in curved spacetime, which is introduced here, in the form of a classical Einstein-Langevin equation. The domain of applications of such an approach and possible outcomes of this formulation which are quite different than its semiclassical counterpart (which is an active area of research), are discussed. This field of study can be seen to emerge out of well established ideas and results in Brownian motion theory as well as the Stochastic Sem…
A semiclassical description of quantum systems is applied to probe the dynamics of the cosmological model of an inflationary universe with quadratic inflaton potential, described in a quantum framework of geometrodynamics. The systematic analysis, focusing in particular on the inflationary and post-inflationary epochs, revealed several surprising and counterintuitive features: $(i)$ during inflation the universe rapidly spreads out in volume which leads to significant relative variance by the end of inflation; $(ii)$ despite that, the quantum evolution can still be described to high accuracy b…
The subject of this thesis is the coupling of quantum fields to a classical gravitational background in a semiclassical fashion. It contains a thorough introduction into quantum field theory on curved spacetime with a focus on the stress-energy tensor and the semiclassical Einstein equation. Basic notions of differential geometry, topology, functional and microlocal analysis, causality and general relativity will be summarised, and the algebraic approach to QFT on curved spacetime will be reviewed. Apart from these foundations, the original research of the author and his collaborators will be …
Whereas semiclassical gravity is based on the semiclassical Einstein equation with sources given by the expectation value of the stress-energy tensor of quantum fields, stochastic semiclassical gravity is based on the Einstein- Langevin equation, which has in addition sources due to the noise kernel. The noise kernel is the expectation value of the stress-energy bi-tensor which describes the fluctuations of quantum matter fields. Here, we first give an axiomatic derivation of the Einstein-Langevin equations and then show how they can also be derived by the original method based on the influenc…
In this paper, we study the quantum corrections to the thermodynamical quantities (temperature and entropy) for a Bardeen charged regular black hole by using a quantum tunneling approach over semiclassical approximations. Taking into account the quantum effects, the semiclassical Bekenstein-Hawking temperature and the area law are obtained, which are then used in the first law of thermodynamics to evaluate corrections to these quantities. It is interesting to mention here that these corrections reduce to the corresponding corrections for the Schwarzschild black hole when the charge $e=0$.
We study the solutions of the semiclassical Einstein equation in flat cosmological spacetimes driven by a massive conformally coupled scalar field. In particular, we show that it is possible to give initial conditions at finite time to get a state for the quantum field which gives finite expectation values for the stress-energy tensor. Furthermore, it is possible to control this expectation value by means of a global estimate on regular cosmological spacetimes. The obtained estimates permit to write a theorem about the existence and uniqueness of the local solutions encompassing both the space…
The product space configuration $AdS_2\times S_2$ (with $l$ and $r$ being radiuses of the components) carrying the electric charge $Q$ is demonstrated to be an exact solution of the semiclassical Einstein equations in presence of the Maxwell field. If the logarithmic UV divergences are absent in the four-dimensional theory the solution we find is identical to the classical Bertotti-Robinson space ($r=l=Q$) with no quantum corrections added. In general, the analysis involves the quadratic curvature coupling $λ$ appearing in the effective action. The solutions we find are of the following types:…
Hawking radiation is viewed as a tunnelling process. In this way the effect of self-gravitation gives rise to semiclassical corrections to the entropy of the (2+1) BTZ black hole. The modified entropy, due to specific modelling of the self-gravitation effect, of the (2+1) BTZ black hole is evaluated. To first order in $ω$ which is a shell of energy radiated outwards the event horizon of the BTZ black hole, modified entropy is proportional to the horizon. In this semiclassical analysis, corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking formula $S_{BH}=\mathcal{A}_{H} / 4l_{P}^{2}$ are found to be negative …
The semiclassical Einstein equations are solved to first order in $ε= \hbar/M^2$ for the case of an extreme or nearly extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole perturbed by the vacuum stress-energy of quantized free fields. It is shown that, for realistic fields of spin 0, 1/2, or 1, any zero temperature black hole solution to the equations must have an event horizon at $r_h < |Q|$, with $Q$ the charge of the black hole. It is further shown that no black hole solutions with $r_h < |Q|$ can be obtained by solving the semiclassical Einstein equations perturbatively.
It has been proposed recently to consider in the framework of cosmology an extension of the semiclassical Einstein's equations in which the Einstein tensor is considered as a random function. This paradigm yields a hierarchy of equations between the $n$-point functions of the quantum, normal ordered, stress energy-tensor and those associated to the stochastic Einstein tensor. Assuming that the matter content is a conformally coupled massive scalar field on de Sitter spacetime, this framework has been applied to compute the power spectrum of the quantum fluctuations and to show that it is almos…
We consider free and self-interacting quantum scalar fields satisfying modified dispersion relations in the framework of Einstein-Aether theory. Using adiabatic regularization, we study the renormalization of the equation for the mean value of the field in the self-interacting case, and the renormalization of the semiclassical Einstein-Aether equations for free fields. In both cases we consider Bianchi type I background spacetimes. Contrary to what happens for {\it free} fields in {\it flat} Robertson-Walker spacetimes, the self-interaction and/or the anisotropy produce non-purely geometric te…
In this paper we shall discuss the backreaction of a massive quantum scalar field on the curvature, the latter treated as a classical field. Furthermore, we shall deal with this problem in the realm of cosmological spacetimes by analyzing the Einstein equations in a semiclassical fashion. More precisely, we shall show that, at least on small intervals of time, solutions for this interacting system exist. This result will be achieved providing an iteration scheme and showing that the series, obtained starting from the massless solution, converges in the appropriate Banach space. The quantum sta…
de Sitter spacetime and Bunch-Davies vacuum are a solution to the semiclassical Einstein-Schroedinger equations describing the evolution of spacetime geometry and a massive scalar quantum field with arbitrary coupling to curvature. The stability of this solution is proven by calculating the renormalized energy momentum tensor expectation value for small spatially homogeneous deviations from the de Sitter - Bunch-Davies system and solving the linearized backreaction problem. A renormalization scheme is developed. All momentum integrations are carried out analytically. The general solution is gi…
Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) have recently been the subject of considerable study as possible analogue models of general relativity. In particular it was shown that the propagation of phase perturbations in a BEC can, under certain conditions, closely mimic the dynamics of scalar quantum fields in curved spacetimes. In two previous articles [gr-qc/0110036, gr-qc/0305061] we noted that a varying scattering length in the BEC corresponds to a varying speed of light in the ``effective metric''. Recent experiments have indeed achieved a controlled tuning of the scattering length in Rubidium 85. …
The semiclassical Einstein-Langevin equations which describe the dynamics of stochastic perturbations of the metric induced by quantum stress-energy fluctuations of matter fields in a given state are considered on the background of the ground state of semiclassical gravity, namely, Minkowski spacetime and a scalar field in its vacuum state. The relevant equations are explicitly derived for massless and massive fields arbitrarily coupled to the curvature. In doing so, some semiclassical results, such as the expectation value of the stress-energy tensor to linear order in the metric perturbation…
Semiclassical approximation to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation which corresponds to gravity with a minimally coupled scalar field has been performed. To the leading order, vacuum Einstein's equation along with the functional Schrodinger equation for the matter field, propagating in the background of classical curved space are obtained. The Schrodinger equation is solved for a quartic potential. It is observed that the wave-functional admits the wormhole boundary condition even for large negative values of the coupling constant epsilon. For conformal coupling epsilon = 1/6, the Hawking-Page wormhol…
We develop a comprehensive framework in which the existence of solutions to the semiclassical Einstein equation (SCE) in cosmological spacetimes is shown. Different from previous work on this subject, we do not restrict to the conformally coupled scalar field and we admit the full renormalization freedom. Based on a regularization procedure, which utilizes homogeneous distributions and is equivalent to Hadamard point-splitting, we obtain a reformulation of the evolution of the quantum state as an infinite-dimensional dynamical system with mathematical features that are distinct from the standa…
In a metric variable based Hamiltonian quantization, we give a prescription for constructing semiclassical matter-geometry states for homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models. These "collective" states arise as infinite linear combinations of fundamental excitations in an unconventional "polymer" quantization. They satisfy a number of properties characteristic of semiclassicality, such as peaking on classical phase space configurations. We describe how these states can be used to determine quantum corrections to the classical evolution equations, and to compute the initial state of the un…
In this paper, employing the path integral method in the framework of a canonical description of a Schwarzschild black hole, we obtain the corrected inverse temperature and entropy of the black hole. The corrections are those coming from the quantum effects as well as from the Generalized Uncertainty Principle effects. Furthermore, an equivalence between the polymer quantization and the Generalized Uncertainty Principle description is shown provided the parameters characterizing these two descriptions are proportional.
We compute semiclassical corrections to the energy density of kinks in $ϕ^4$ theory and of solitons in the sine-Gordon model in $1+1$ dimensions, using local and covariant renormalization techniques from quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. For the semiclassical correction to the energy, we recover the known results. Our analysis highlights a subtlety in the definition of a conserved stress tensor for scalar field theories in $1+1$ dimension.
We numerically integrate the semiclassical equations of motion for spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell theory with a dilaton coupled scalar field and look for zero temperature configurations. The solution we find is studied in detail close to the horizon and comparison is made with the corresponding one in the minimally coupled case.
Applying the Hamilton-Jacobi method beyond the semiclassical approximation prescribed in \cite{Majhi3} for the scalar particle, Hawking radiation as tunneling of Dirac particle through an event horizon is analysed. We show that, as before, all quantum corrections in the single particle action are proportional to the usual semiclassical contribution. We also compute the modifications to the Hawking temperature and Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for the Schwarzschild black hole. Finally, the coefficient of the logarithmic correction to entropy is shown to be related with the trace anomaly.
This article presents numerical work on a special case of the cosmological semiclassical Einstein equation (SCE). The SCE describes the interaction of relativistic quantum matter by the expected value of the renormalized stress-energy tensor of a quantum field with classical gravity. Here we consider a free massless scalar field with general (not necessarily conformal) coupling to curvature. In a cosmological scenario with flat spatial sections for special choices of the initial conditions, we observe a separation of the dynamics of the quantum degrees of freedom from the dynamics of the scale…
