Results concerning the dependence of photometric and radial velocity amplitudes on metallicity are presented based on about 200 Galactic classical Cepheids pulsating in the fundamental mode. The Galactic distribution of the [Fe/H] value of Cepheids is also studied. We show that the photometric amplitude ratio $A_\mathrm{I}/A_\mathrm{V}$ is independent of metallicity. The observed dependence of this ratio on the pulsation period does not correspond to the theoretical predictions.
We point out that the absolute magnitude of the Galactic Cepheids, which have been used for local calibrations for Cepheid period-luminosity relation, shows an unexpectedly large metal abundance effect. This indicates that either Cepheids period luminosity relation has a large metallicity dependence, much larger than expected in stellar pulsation models, or the unreddened distances to clusters contain a large systematic error arising from the neglect of the metallicity effect. This effect may introduce an uncertainty of --0.4 to +0.1 mag into the distance to the LMC estimated using the Cepheid…
It has been observed that Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds have lower masses for the same luminosity than those in the Milky Way. The model, from Neilson & Lester (2008), of pulsation-driven mass loss for Cepheids is applied to theoretical models of Cepheids with metallicity consistent with the Milky Way and Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The mass-loss model is analyzed using the metallicity correction of the Period-Luminosity relation to compare the ratio of mass loss of Cepheids with lower metallicity to that of Cepheids with solar metallicity. It is determined that mass loss may be lar…
We present results based on a Baade-Wesselink analysis of Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The Baade-Wesselink analysis provides individual luminosities for these metal-poor Cepheids which combined with recent Baade-Wesselink results from Gieren et al. (1998) on solar metallicity Galactic Cepheids constrain the metallicity effect on the zero-point of the Cepheid P-L relation. A preliminary analysis leads to an effect of dMv / d[Fe/H]= -0.45 +-0.15, metal-rich Cepheids being brighter, in good agreement with several recent independent determinations. An effect of this magnitude reduces si…
(ABRIDGED) We have applied the near-IR Barnes-Evans realization of the Baade-Wesselink method as calibrated by Fouque & Gieren (1997) to five metal-poor Cepheids with periods between 13 and 17 days in the Small Magellanic Cloud as well as to a sample of 34 Galactic Cepheids to determine the effect of metallicity on the period-luminosity (P-L) relation. For ten of the Galactic Cepheids we present new accurate and well sampled radial-velocity curves. The Baade-Wesselink analysis provides accurate individual distances and luminosities to the Cepheids in the two samples, allowing us to constrain d…
We test the effect of systematic metallicity difference between the two types of double-mode Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds. We show that lowering the metallicity for the short-periodic Cepheids leaves the distances at their canonical values and, at the same time, improves the agreement between the observed and model periods.
We have used the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain V and I images of seven nearby galaxies. For each, we have measured a distance using the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) method. By comparing the TRGB distances to published Cepheid distances, we investigate the metallicity dependence of the Cepheid period-luminosity relation. Our sample is supplemented by 10 additional galaxies for which both TRGB and Cepheid distances are available in the literature, thus providing a uniform coverage in Cepheid abundances between 1/20 and 2 (O/H)solar. We find…
Dependence of phenomenological properties of Cepheids on the heavy element abundance is studied. It is found that the amplitude of the pulsation depends on the metallicity of the stellar atmosphere.
Our analysis of the Deep CFHT M33 variability survey database has uncovered 5 Beat Cepheids (BCs) that are pulsating in the fundamental and first overtone modes. With {\it only} the help of stellar pulsation theory and of mass--luminosity (M-L) relations, derived from evolutionary tracks, we can accurately determine the metallicities Z of these stars. The [O/H] metallicity gradient of -0.16 dex/kpc that is inferred from the M33 galacto-centric distances of these Cepheids and from their 'pulsation' metallicities is in excellent agreement with the standard spectroscopic metallicity gradients tha…
We perform a detailed analysis of Cepheids in NGC 4258, Magellanic Clouds and Milky Way in order to verify the reliability of the theoretical scenario based on a large set of nonlinear convective pulsation models. We derive Wesenheit functions from the synthetic BVI magnitudes of the pulsators and we show that the sign and the extent of the metallicity effect on the predicted Period-Wesenheit (P-W) relations change according to the adopted passbands. These P-W relations are applied to measured BVI magnitudes of NGC 4258, Magellanic and Galactic Cepheids available in the literature. We find tha…
We have assessed the influence of the stellar iron content on the Cepheid Period-Luminosity (PL) relation by relating the V band residuals from the Freedman et al (2001) PL relation to [Fe/H] for 68 Galactic and Magellanic Cloud Cepheids. The iron abundances were measured from FEROS and UVES high-resolution and high signal-to-noise optical spectra. Our data indicate that the stars become fainter as metallicity increases, until a plateau or turnover point is reached at about solar metallicity. This behavior appears at odds both with the PL relation being independent from iron abundance and with…
A sample of 37 Galactic, 10 LMC and 6 SMC cepheids is compiled for which individual metallicity estimates exist and BVIK photometry in almost all cases. The Galactic cepheids all have an individual distance estimate available. For the MC objects different sources of photometry are combined to obtain improved periods and mean magnitudes. A multi-parameter Period-Luminosity relation is fitted to the data which also solves for the distance to the LMC and SMC. When all three galaxies are considered, without metallicity effect, a significant quadratic term in log P is found, as previously observed …
We present preliminary results of an observational campaign devoted at establishing the influence of chemical composition on the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation. The data are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on non-linear convective models, suggesting a fairly strong dependence of the Period-Luminosity relation on metallicity in the sense of more metal rich stars being intrinsically fainter than otherwise expected. Our data indicate that the error on the inferred distance can be as large as 10% if the role of metallicity is neglected.
We use theoretical Period-Luminosity and Period-Luminosity-Color relations in the VI passbands, as based on nonlinear, nonlocal and time-dependent convective pulsating models, to predict the reddening and true distance modulus of distant Cepheids observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. By relying on the pulsating models with metal content Z=0.008, we find that the theoretical predictions agree to the values obtained by the Extragalactic Distance Scale Key Project on the basis of empirical Period-Luminosity relations referenced to LMC variables. In the meantime, from the theoretical relations…
We present the results of an observational campaign undertaken to assess the influence of the iron content on the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation. Our data indicate that this dependence is not well represented by a simple linear relation. Rather, the behaviour is markedly non monotonic, with the correction peaking at about solar metallicity and declining for higher and lower values of [Fe/H].
The mere location of a Beat Cepheid model in a Period Ratio vs. Period diagram (Petersen diagram) puts very tight constraints on its metallicity Z. The Beat Cepheid Peterson diagrams are revisited with linear nonadiabatic turbulent convective models, and their accuracy as a probe for stellar metallicity is evaluated. They are shown to be largely independent of the helium content Y, and they are also only weakly dependent on the mass-luminosity relation that is used in their construction. However, they are found to show sensitivity to the relative abundances of the elements that are lumped into…
Using published HST Cepheid data from 25 galaxies, we have found a correlation between the P-L dispersion and host galaxy metallicity which is significant at the ~3sigma level in the V band. This result supports the suggestion that the metallicity dependence of the Cepheid P-L relation may be stronger than expected. The high observed dispersions in the HST Cepheid P-L relations have the further consequence that the bias due to incompleteness in the P-L relation at faint magnitudes is more significant than previously thought. In the HST sample, galaxies at higher distance tend to have higher me…
We develop a statistical method for using multicolor photometry to determine distances using Cepheid variables including the effects of temperature, extinction, and metallicity and apply it to UBVRIJHK photometry of 694 Cepheids in 17 galaxies. We derive homogeneous distance, extinction and uncertainty estimates for four models, starting from the standard extragalactic method and then adding the physical effects of temperature distributions, extinction distributions, requiring positive definite extinctions, and metallicity. While we find general agreement with published distances when we make …
It is well known that the mere location of a Beat Cepheid model in a Period Ratio \vs Period diagram (Petersen diagram) puts constraints on its metallicity Z. But these bounds are sensitive to the mixture of elements that are lumped into the parameter $Z$. In this short paper we update the previous results that were based on the Grevesse-Noels solar mixture to the recent, revised Asplund, Grevesse & Sauval (2005) (AGS) solar mixture. We also examine the effect of the envelope depth on the accuracy of the computed pulsation periods. We find that for low period Cepheids with high Z the customary…
We present iron abundance measurements, based on high resolution spectroscopy, and accurate distance determinations, based on near infrared photometry, for 34 Galactic Cepheids. The new data are used to constrain the Galactic iron abundance gradient in the outer disk, namely from 10 to 14 kpc. We confirm the flattening of the gradient toward the outer disk. In this region we also found an increase in the metallicity dispersion. Current data do not support the occurrence of a jump in the metallicity gradient for Galactocentric distances of the order of 10-12 kpc.
Aims: We define the relationship between the double-mode pulsation of Cepheids and metallicity in a more accurate way, determine the empirical metallicities of double-mode Cepheids from homogeneous, high-resolution spectroscopic data, and study of the period-ratio -- metallicity dependence. Methods: The high S/N echelle spectra obtained with the FEROS spectrograph were analyzed using a self-developed IRAF script, and the iron abundances were determined by comparing with synthetic spectra assuming LTE. Results: Accurate [Fe/H] values of 17 galactic beat Cepheids were determined. All these stars…
We first discuss why there remains continuing, strong motivation to investigate Hubble's Constant. Then we review new evidence from an investigation of the Galactic Open Clusters containing Cepheids by Hoyle et al. that the metallicity dependence of the Cepheid P-L relation is stronger than expected. This result is supported by a new analysis of mainly HST Distance Scale Key Project data which shows a correlation between host galaxy metallicity and the rms scatter around the Cepheid P-L relation. If Cepheids do have a significant metallicity dependence then an already existing scale error for …
On the basis of new theoretical results useful predictions concerning the Period-Luminosity (PLR) and Period-Luminosity-Color (PLCR) relations both for optical and infrared magnitudes are presented. It is shown that, following the dependence of the instability strip on metallicity, there is a non negligible dependence of the PLRs and PLCRs on the metallicity of the pulsating stars, mainly for optical bands. In particular theoretical results predict a dependence of the PLR on metals which is reversed with respect to current empirical evaluations. To give a possible explanation for this discrepa…
We first discuss why the uncomfortable fine-tuning of the parameters of the Lambda-CDM cosmological model provides continuing, strong motivation to investigate Hubble's Constant. Then we review evidence from the HST Key Project that there is a significant scale error between raw Cepheid and Tully-Fisher distances. An analysis of mainly HST Distance Scale Key Project data shows a correlation between host galaxy metallicity and the rms scatter around the Cepheid P-L relation, which may support a recent suggestion that the P-L metallicity dependence is stronger than expected. If Cepheids do have …
With the aid of stellar atmosphere models, we derive iron abundances [Fe/H] from the OGLE B, V, I photometry on the Magellanic Cloud Cepheids. We show that in both clouds the average metallicities of the first overtone variables are lower than those of the fundamental ones (by ~0.2 and ~0.3 dex in the LMC and SMC, respectively). Consequently, there is a correlation between the overall [Fe/H] and luminosity; the lower luminosity stars tend to be also of lower metallicity. These metallicity dependencies are concordant with the ones derived for the two types of double-mode Cepheids from pulsation…
The Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation is unquestionably one of the most powerful tools at our disposal for determining the extragalactic distance scale. While significant progress has been made in the past few years towards its understanding and characterisation, both on the observational (e.g. the HST Key Project) and theoretical (e.g. non-linear pulsation models, non-LTE atmospheres etc.) sides, the debate on the influence that chemical composition may have on the Period-Luminosity relation is still unsettled. Current estimates lead to differences in the distance as large as 15%, effectivel…
The theoretical period-luminosity relation for Cepheids was deduced from stellar evolution and pulsation computations. Questions concerning the metallicity dependence of the relation as well as the constancy of the pulsation `constant' Q in the instablility strip were addressed. We found no significant metallicity dependence of either the slope or of the zero-point of the period-luminosity relation. The Q-value, however, varies across the instability strip, in effective temperature as well as in luminosity; its metallicity dependence, on the other hand, is marginal.
We discuss the metallicity effect on the theoretical visual and near-infrared PL and PLC relations of classical Cepheids, as based on nonlinear, nonlocal and time--dependent convective pulsating models at varying chemical composition. In view of the two usual methods of averaging (magnitude-weighted and intensity-weighted) observed magnitudes and colors over the full pulsation cycle, we briefly discuss the differences between static and mean quantities. We show that the behavior of the synthetic mean magnitudes and colors fully reproduces the observed trend of Galactic Cepheids, supporting the…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the metallicity dependence of the $PL$-relation in $V$ and $K$ based on a sample of 68 Galactic Cepheids with individual Baade-Wesselink distances (some of the stars also have an HST-based parallax) and individually determined metallicities from high-resolution spectroscopy. Literature values of the $V$-band, $K$-band and radial velocity data have been collected for a sample of 68 classical cepheids that have their metallicity determined in the literature from high-resolution spectroscopy. Based on a $(V-K)$ surface-brightness relation and a projection f…
This is an investigation of the period-luminosity relation of classical Cepheids in samples of different metallicity. It is based on 481 Cepheids in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds from the blue and red filter CCD observations (most similar to V_J & R_J) of the French EROS microlensing project. The data-set is complete and provides an excellent basis for a differential analysis between LMC and SMC. In comparison to previous studies of effects on the PL-relation, the EROS data-set offers extremely well-sampled light curves and well-filled instability strips. This allows reliable separatio…
We report the discovery of eleven beat Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud, using data obtained by the EROS microlensing survey. Four stars are beating in the fundamental and first overtone mode (F/1OT), seven are beating in the first and second overtone (1OT/2OT). The SMC F/1OT ratio is systematically higher than the LMC F/1OT, while the 1OT/2OT period ratio in the SMC Cepheids is the same as the LMC one.
In this paper we present an extended set of nonlinear convective pulsation models at varying the metallicity and DY/DZ ratio. The predicted instability strip and bolometric light curves are discussed by comparing the new models with our previous ones. In particular, the dependence on both metal and helium abundances is investigated. By transforming the bolometric light curves into the observational bands we are able to derive both Period-Color-Luminosity and Wesenheit relations for each selected chemical composition. Synthetic Period-Luminosity relations are obtained by populating the instabil…
This study combines data from a set of seven Cepheid-calibrated galaxies in Virgo, Leo I and Fornax and four supernovae with known metallicities, including metallicity corrections to the Cepheid distances, in order to determine a consistent mean value for the Hubble constant. We derive Virgo and Coma distances over different paths, starting from the metallicity corrected Cepheid distances of Virgo and Leo I galaxies, and we relate them to the Virgo and the Coma recession velocities, paying special attention to thereby introduced correlations. We also determine the velocity of the Fornax cluste…
Based on consistent evolutionary and pulsation calculations, we analyse the effect of metallicity and of different convection treatments in the stellar models on period - magnitude, - color and - radius relationships. In order to perform an accurate comparison with observations, we have computed grids of atmosphere models and synthetic spectra for different metallicities, covering the range of effective temperatures and gravities relevant for Cepheids. The models are compared to recent observations of galactic and Magellanic Clouds Cepheids. Unprecedented level of agreement is found between mo…
Recent HST determinations of the expansion's rate of the Universe (the Hubble constant, H_0) assumed that the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation at V and I are independent of metallicity (Freedman, et al., 1996, Saha et al., 1996, Tanvir et al., 1995). The three groups obtain different vales for H_0. We note that most of this discrepancy stems from the asumption (by both groups) that the Period-Luminosity relation is independent of metallicity. We come to this conclusion as a result of our study of the Period-Luminosity relation of 481 Cepheids with 3 millions two colour measurements in the La…
We present new empirical and theoretical calibrations of two photometric metallicity indices based on Walraven photometry. The empirical calibration relies on a sample of 48 Cepheids for which iron abundances based on high resolution spectra are available in the literature. They cover a broad range in metal abundance (-0.5 < [Fe/H] < +0.5) and the intrinsic accuracy of the Metallicity Index Color (MIC) relations is better than 0.2 dex. The theoretical calibration relies on a homogeneous set of scaled-solar evolutionary tracks for intermediate-mass stars and on pulsation predictions concerning …
The Galactic Cepheid period histogram has a strong dip between 8 and 10 days that has defied an explanation based on evolutionary and linear pulsation studies. We show here that this deficiency is caused by the instability of the nonlinear fundamental pulsation cycle in this period range. The strong metallicity dependence of this instability is consistent with the absence of a corresponding minimum in the Magellanic Cloud data. Our results also suggest that the Galactic Cepheids must have a large spread in metallicity.
We present results of the search for Cepheids in the galaxy IC1613 carried out as a sub-project of the OGLE-II microlensing survey. 138 Cepheids were found in the 14.2x14.2 arcmin region in the center of the galaxy. We present light curves, VI photometry and basic data for all these objects, as well as color-magnitude diagram of the observed field. The Period--Luminosity (PL) diagrams for IC1613 fundamental mode Cepheids for VI and interstellar extinction insensitive index W_I are constructed. Comparison of PL relations in metal poor galaxy IC1613 ([Fe/H]~-1.0 dex) with relations in metal rich…
Uncertainty in the metal abundance dependence of the Cepheid variable period- luminosity (PL) relation remains one of the outstanding sources of systematic error in the extragalactic distance scale and Hubble constant. To test for such a metallicity dependence, we have used the WFPC2 camera on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to observe Cepheids in two fields in the nearby spiral galaxy M101, which span a range in oxygen abundance of 0.7+-0.15 dex. A differential analysis of the PL relations in V and I in the two fields yields a marginally significant change in the inferred distance modulus on…
The methods of calibrating the luminosities of galactic Cepheids and determining Cepheid reddenings are considered in some detail. Together with work on NGC4258 this suggests that the calibration presented is valid to about 0.1mag (s.e.) at least for Cepheids with near-solar abundances. Metallicity effects are considered, partly through the use of non-Cepheid moduli of the LMC. To reduce the uncertainty substantially below 0.1mag will require extensive work on metallicity effects. Non-linearities in the period-luminosity and period-colour relations will also need to be considered as will the n…
We predict mean angular diameters and amplitudes of angular diameter variations for all monoperiodic Pop.I Cepheids brighter than <V> = 8.0mag. The catalog is intended to aid selecting most promising Cepheid targets for future interferometric observations.
We present new near-IR light curves for six Cepheids in the young blue LMC cluster NGC1866 as well as high precision radial velocity curves for ten Cepheids in NGC1866 and two in NGC2031. For the six Cepheids in NGC1866 with new J and K light curves we determine distances and absolute magnitudes by applying the near-IR surface brightness method. We find that the formal error estimates on the derived distances are underestimated by about a factor of two. We find excellent agreement between the absolute magnitudes for the low metallicity LMC Cepheids with the Period-Luminosity (P-L) relation det…
We present a differential study of 500 Magellanic Cepheids with 3 million measurements obtained as a by-product of the EROS microlensing survey. The data-set is unbiased and provides an excellent basis for a differential analysis between LMC and SMC. We investigate the pulsational properties of the Cepheids as a function of metallicity and the constraints they give to stellar pulsation, stellar evolution theory and opacities. Moreover, our empirical analysis shows a small metallicity effect on the period-luminosity relation which has a significant implication to recent distance estimates based…
We investigate the reddening and Main Sequence fitted distances to eleven young, Galactic open clusters that contain Cepheids. Each cluster contains or is associated with at least one Cepheid variable star. Reddening to the clusters is estimated using the U-B:B-V colours of the OB stars and the distance modulus to the cluster is estimated via B-V:V and V-K:V colour-magnitude diagrams. By main-sequence fitting we proceed to calibrate the Cepheid P-L relation and find M_V=-2.81xlogP-1.33 +/-0.32 and M_K=-3.44xlogP-2.20 +/-0.29 and a distance modulus to the LMC of 18.55+/-0.32 in the V-band and 1…
Expected mean angular diameters and amplitudes of angular diameter variations are estimated for all monoperiodic Classical Cepheids brighter than <V> = 8.0mag. The catalog is intended to help selecting best Cepheid targets for interferometric observations.
The MACHO variables of LMC Field 77 that lie in the vicinity of the Cepheid instability strip are reexamined. Among the 144 variables that we identify as Cepheids we find 14 that have Fourier amplitudes <0.05 mag in the MACHO red band, of which 7 have an amplitude <0.006 mag : we dub the latter group of stars ultra-low amplitude (ULA) Cepheids. The variability of these objects is verified by a comparison of the MACHO red with the MACHO blue lightcurves and with those of the corresponding OGLE LMC stars. The occurrence of ULA Cepheids is in agreement with theory. We have also discovered 2 low a…
In a recent paper describing HST observations of Cepheids in the spiral galaxy NGC 4258, Newman et al. (2001) report that the revised calibrations and methods for the Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale yield that the true distance modulus of this galaxy is 29.40+-0.09 mag, corresponding to a metric distance of 7.6+-0.3 Mpc. This Cepheid distance, which holds for 18.50 mag as the true distance modulus of the LMC, is not significantly larger than 7.2+-0.5 Mpc, the value determined by Herrnstein et al. (1999) from purely geometric considerations on the orbital motions of water maser …
Previous nonlinear fundamental pulsation models for classical Cepheids with metal content Z <= 0.02 are implemented with new computations at super-solar metallicity (Z=0.03, 0.04) and selected choices of the helium-to-metal enrichment ratio DeltaY/Delta Z. On this basis, we show that the location into the HR diagram of the Cepheid instability strip is dependent on both metal and helium abundance, moving towards higher effective temperatures with decreasing the metal content (at fixed Y) or with increasing the helium content (at fixed Z). The contributions of helium and metals to the predicted …
We analyse a sample of 236 Cepheids from the Hipparcos catalog, using the method of ``reduced parallaxes'' in V, I, K and the reddening-free ``Wesenheit-index''. We compare our sample to those considered by Feast & Catchpole (1997) and Lanoix et al. (1999). We stress the importance of two systematic effects which influence the distance to the LMC: the slopes of the Galactic PL-relations and metallicity corrections. In order to assess the influence of these various effects, we present 27 distance moduli (DM) to the LMC, based on three different colours (V,I,K), three different slopes, and three…
It has been claimed that Period-Luminosity relations derived from infrared observations of Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids are less dependent on the metallicity of the Cepheids. In this work, infrared observations of LMC Cepheids from the SAGE survey are combined with OGLE II optical observation to model and predict mass-loss rates. The mass-loss rates are fit to the data and are predicted to range from about 10^{-12} to 10^{-7}M_\odot/yr; however, the rates depend on the assumed value of the dust-to-gas ratio. By comparing the relations derived from observations to the relations derived…
With this paper we continue the preparation for a forthcoming summary report of our experiment with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to determine the Hubble constant using type Ia supernovae as standard candles. Two problems are addressed. (1) We examine the need for, and determine the value of, the corrections to the apparent magnitudes of our program Cepheids in the eleven previous calibration papers due to sensitivity drifts and charge transfer effects of the HST WFPC2 camera over the life time of the experiment from 1992 to 2001. (2) The corrected apparent magnitudes are applied to all our…
In this paper, we construct full amplitude non-linear hydrodynamical models of fundamental mode Galactic Cepheids and analyze the resulting theoretical period-colour and amplitude-colour relations at maximum, mean and minimum light. These theoretical relations match the general form of the observed relations well. This agreement is, to some extent, independent of the mass-luminosity relations used, pulsation code, numerical techniques, details of the input physics and methods to convert theoretical quantities, such as bolometric luminosity and temperature, to observational quantities, such as …
We selected cepheids from the OGLE database for the Magellanic Clouds in the period range 10^{1.1} < P < 10^{1.4} days. There were 33 objects in the LMC and 35 in the SMC. We find that the median amplitude of cepheids in the LMC is 18% larger than in the SMC, a 4 sigma effect. This implies that the period - flux amplitude relation is not universal, and cannot be used to measure distances accurately.
Period-colour (PC) and amplitude-colour (AC) relations at maximum, mean and minimum light are constructed from a large grid of full amplitude hydrodynamic models of Cepheids with a composition appropriate for the SMC (Small Magellanic Cloud). We compare these theoretical relations with those from observations. The theoretical relations are in general good agreement with their observational counterparts though there exist some discrepancy for short period (log [P] < 1) Cepheids. We outline a physical mechanism which can, in principle, be one factor to explain the observed PC/AC relations for th…
We present the results of a search for short-period variable stars in Leo A. We have found 92 candidate variables, including eight candidate RR Lyrae stars. From the RR Lyraes, we measure a distance modulus of (m-M)_0 = 24.51 +/- 0.12, or 0.80 +/- 0.04 Mpc. This discovery of RR Lyraes confirms, for the first time, the presence of an ancient (> ~11 Gyr) population in Leo A accounting for at least 0.1% of the galaxy's V luminosity. We have also discovered a halo of old (> ~2 Gyr) stars surrounding Leo A, with a scale length roughly 50% larger than that of the dominant young population. We also r…
Recent search for multiperiodicity in LMC Cepheids (Moskalik, Kolaczkowski & Mizerski 2004) has led to discovery of periodic modulation of amplitudes and phases in many of the first/second overtone (FO/SO) double mode pulsators. We discuss observational characteristics and possible mechanisms responsible for this behaviour.
We investigate the theoretical scenario concerning the large sample of variables recently discovered in the dwarf, metal-poor irregular galaxy Leo A, focusing the attention on the "Anomalous" Cepheid phenomenon and its correlation with RR Lyrae stars, Classical and Population II Cepheids. To this purpose, we make use of suitable stellar and pulsation models to depict the pulsational history of evolutionary structures with metallicity Z=0.0004, finding that He-burning pulsators are expected only outside the mass interval ~ 0.8-1.7 Mo. The dependence on metal content of this scenario has been in…
We present and discuss theoretical pulsational predictions concerning the properties of Classical Cepheids. The computations have been performed for three different chemical compositions taken as representative of Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds and in the Galaxy. The resulting PL relations are significantly dependent on metallicity, with the amplitude of the metallicity effect decreasing at the longer wavelength. At variance with several empirical suggestions appeared in the literature, we find that at fixed period the metal-rich pulsators should be fainter than the metal-poor ones. Tight P…
Revised Hipparcos parallaxes for classical Cepheids are analysed together with 10 HST-based parallaxes (Benedict et al.). In a reddening-free V,I relation we find that the coefficient of logP is the same within the uncertainties in our Galaxy as in the LMC, contrary to some previous suggestions. Cepheids in the inner region of NGC4258 with near solar metallicities (Macri et al.) confirm this result. We obtain a zero-point for the reddening-free relation and apply it to Cepheids in galaxies used by Sandage et al. to calibrate the absolute magnitudes of SNIa and to derive the Hubble constant. We…
Hipparcos parallaxes have recently become available for a sample of Galactic Cepheids, and we have used these new distances to calibrate the Cepheid period-luminosity (PL) relation at six wavelengths (BVIJHK). Comparing these calibrations with previously published multiwavelength PL relations we find agreement to within 0.07 +/- 0.14 mag, or 4 +/- 7% in distance. Unfortunately, the current parallax errors for the fundamental pulsators (ranging in signal-to-noise = pi /sigma_pi from 0.3 to 5.3, at best) preclude an unambiguous interpretation of the observed differences, which may arise from a c…
The photometric data for 460 classical, fundamental-mode Cepheids in the SMC with log P > 0.4 measured by Udalski et al. have been analyzed for their P-C and P-L relations, and for the variation of amplitude across the instability strip in a similar way that was done in Papers I and II of this series. The SMC Cepheids are bluer in (B-V) at a given period than for both the Galaxy and the LMC. Their P-C relation in (B-V) is best fit by two lines intersecting at P=10 d. Their break must necessarily exist also in the P-L relations in B and/or V, but remains hidden in the magnitude scatter. An addi…
