Results from electric charge correlations studied with the Balance Function method in A+A collisions from 20\emph{A} to 158\emph{A} GeV are presented in two different rapidity intervals: In the mid-rapidity region we observe a decrease of the width of the Balance Function distribution with increasing centrality of the collision, whereas this effect vanishes in the forward rapidity region.
Results from the energy dependence study in central Pb+Pb collisions show that the narrowing of the Balance Function expressed by the normalised width parameter \textit{W} increases with energy towards the highest SPS and RHIC energies.
Finally we compare our experimental data points with predictions of several models. The hadronic string models UrQMD and HIJING do not reproduce the observed narrowing of the Balance Function. However, AMPT which contains a quark-parton transport phase before hadronization can reproduce the narrowing of the BF's width with centrality. This confirms the proposed sensitivity of the Balance Function analysis to the time of hadronization.
This article is devoted to results on pion-pion -Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb+Pb collisions measured by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. Rapidity as well as transverse momentum dependences of the correlation lengths will be shown for collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV beam energy. Only a weak energy dependence of the radii is observed at SPS energies. The kt-dependence of the correlation lengths as well as the single particle mt-spectra will be compared to model calculations. The rapidity dependence is analysed in a range of 2.5 units of rapidity starting at the cen…
Electric charge correlations are studied with the Balance Function method for central Pb + Pb collisions at the CERN - SPS. The results on centrality selected Pb + Pb interactions at 40 and 158 AGeV are presented for the first time for two different rapidity intervals. In the mid-rapidity region a decrease of the width with increasing centrality of the collision is observed whereas in the forward rapidity region this effect vanishes. This could suggest a delayed hadronization scenario. In addition, the results from a first attempt to study the energy dependence of the Balance Function througho…
In this paper we present recent results from the NA49 experiment for $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons produced in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40, 80 and 158 A$\cdot$GeV. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions for $Λ$ are shown for all three energies. The shape of the rapidity distribution becomes flatter with increasing beam energy. The multiplicities at mid-rapidity as well as the total yields are studied as a function of collision energy including AGS measurements. The ratio $Λ/π$ at mid-rapidity and in 4$π$ has a maximum around 40 A$\cdot$GeV. In addition, $\barΛ$ rapidity distributions…
Multiplicity fluctuations in the forward hemisphere were studied for positively, negatively and all charged hadrons produced in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A and 158A GeV. The multiplicity distributions and their scaled variances are presented as a function of collision energy, rapidity and transverse momentum. The distributions have a bell-like shape and the scaled variance changes monotonously with energy in the range from 0.8 to 1.2. No indication of the critical point is observed. The string-hadronic model UrQMD reproduces results on the scaled variance. The predictions of…
NA61/SHINE is an experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The main goals of the experiment are the search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter and the study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement. To reach these goals, the two-dimensional scan in beam momentum ($13A-150A$ GeV/$c$) and system size ($p$+$p$, Be+Be, Ar+Sc, Xe+La, Pb+Pb) was performed. In the final stage of the collision, the spectra of protons are only weakly affected by the effects of resonance decays and rescattering due to their large mass. Thus, proton rapidity distribution is particularly se…
The elliptic flow for Lambda hyperons and K0s mesons was measured by the NA49 experiment in semicentral Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV. The standard method of correlating particles with an event plane has been used. Measurements of v2 near mid-rapidity are reported as a function of centrality, rapidity and transverse momentum. Elliptic flow of Lambda and K0s particles increases both with the impact parameter and with the transverse momentum. It is compared with v2 for pions and protons as well as with various model predictions. The NA49 results are compared with data from NA45/CERES and STAR exp…
A measurement of strange baryon and antibaryon production in Pb-Pb collisions has been carried out by the NA57 experiment at the CERN SPS, with 40 and 158 A GeV/c beam momentum. Results on $Λ$, $Ξ$ and $Ω$ hyperon yields at mid-rapidity in the most central 53% of Pb-Pb collisions at 40 A GeV/c are presented and compared with those obtained at higher energy, in the same collision centrality range. The $Λ$ and $Ξ^-$ yields per unit rapidity stay roughly constant while those of $Ω^-$, $\barΛ$, $\barΞ^+$ and $\barΩ^+$ increase when going to the higher SPS energy. Hyperon yields at the SPS are comp…
We report a measurement of $ϕ$ meson production in central Pb+Au collisions at E$_{lab}$/A=158 GeV. For the first time in heavy-ion collisions, $ϕ$ mesons were reconstructed in the same experiment both in the K$^+$K$^-$ and the dilepton decay channel. Near mid-rapidity, this yields rapidity densities, corrected for production at the same rapidity value, of 2.05 +- 0.14(stat) +- 0.25(syst) and 2.04 +- 0.49(stat)+-{0.32}(syst), respectively. The shape of the measured transverse momentum spectra is also in close agreement in both decay channels. The data rule out a possible enhancement of the $ϕ$…
We present new results on production of 3He and t obtained by the NA49 experiment in 20A, 30A, 40A and 80A GeV central Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions for clusters measured over a large phase space domain are discussed. We observe a weak dependence of the mid-rapidity t/3He ratio on collision energy at SPS. The energy dependence of the total yield for 3He is remarkably reproduced by a statistical hadron gas model. A gradual decrease of the coalescence parameter B3 for 3He with $\sqrt {s_{NN}}$ is observed. In addition, a measurement of the yi…
Measurements of Bose-Einstein correlations of pion pairs in central Pb+Pb collisions were performed with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS for beam energies of 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV. Correlation functions were measured in the longitudinally co-moving ``out-side-long'' reference frame as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum in the forward hemisphere of the reaction. Radius and correlation strength parameters were obtained from fits of a Gaussian parametrization. The results show a decrease of the radius parameters with increasing transverse momentum characteristic of strong…
Rapidity-dependent transverse momentum spectra of negatively charged pions measured at different rapidities in proton-proton collisions at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at various energies within its Beam Energy Scan (BES) program are investigated by using one- and two-component standard distributions where the chemical potential and spin property of particles are implemented. The rapidity spectra are described by a double-Gaussian distribution. At the stage of kinetic freeze-out, the event patterns are structured by the scatter plots in the three-dimensional subspaces of velocity, moment…
New experimental results of NA49 on hyperon production in central Pb+Pb collisions at the SPS energies are presented. In particular, measurements of $Λ$ production at 30 A$\cdot$GeV and $Ξ$ and $Ω$ production at 40 A$\cdot$GeV are shown. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions of hyperons at different energies are compared. The energy dependence of the particle yields and ratios is discussed.
The NA44 Collaboration has measured yields and differential distributions of K+, K-, pi+, pi- in transverse kinetic energy and rapidity, around the center-of-mass rapidity in 158 A GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. A considerable enhancement of K+ production per pi is observed, as compared to p+p collisions at this energy. To illustrate the importance of secondary hadron rescattering as an enhancement mechanism, we compare strangeness production at the SPS and AGS with predictions of the transport model RQMD.
New results on the production of Xi and Omega hyperons in Pb+Pb interactions at 40AGeV and Lambda at 30AGeV are presented. Transverse mass spectra as well as rapidity spectra of these hyperons are shown and compared to previously measured data at different beam energies. The energy dependence of hyperon production (4pi yields) is discussed. Additionally, the centrality dependence of Xi^{-} production at 40AGeV is presented.
The yields of (anti-)protons were measured by the NA49 Collaboration in centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV. Particle identification was obtained in the laboratory momentum range from 5 to 63 GeV/c by the measurement of the energy loss dE/dx in the TPC detector gas. The corresponding rapidity coverage extends 1.6 units from mid-rapidity into the forward hemisphere. Transverse mass spectra, the rapidity dependences of the average transverse mass, and rapidity density distributions were studied as a function of collision centrality. The values of the average transverse m…
We study the rapidity losses in central heavy-ion collisions from AGS to RHIC energies with the mean rapidity determined from the projectile net-baryon distribution after collisions. The projectile net-baryon distribution in the full rapidity range was obtained by removing the target contribution phenomenologically at forward rapidity region from the experimental net-baryon measurements and taking into account the projectile contribution at backward rapidity region. Based on the full projectile net-baryon distributions, calculation results show that the rapidity loss stops increasing from the …
We have studied the widths of the rapidity distributions of particles produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions at various center of mass energies and as a function of centrality at SPS energies. We show that the width of the rapidity distribution is sensitive to longitudinal flow, velocity of sound in the medium, and rescattering of particles. We explore the possibility of distinguishing the initial hard scattering regime from final state effects by studying the variation in the width of the rapidity distribution of the particles with centrality for various pT values.
In the recent years the NA49 experiment has collected data on Pb+Pb collisions at beam energies between 20 to 158 AGeV with the objective to cover the critical region of energy densities where the expected phase transition to a deconfined phase might occur in the early stage of the reactions. In this contribution the energy dependence of various hadronic observables is presented. These include m_t- and rapidity- distributions, particle ratio fluctuations, as well as HBT radii.
The Balance Function analysis method was developed in order to study the long range correlations in pseudo-rapidity of charged particle. The final results on p+p, C+C, Si+Si and centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 17.2$ GeV and the preliminary data at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 8.8$ GeV are presented. The width of the Balance Function decreases with increasing system size and centrality of the collisions. This could suggest a delayed hadronization scenario.
Rapidity distributions for $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons in central Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80 and 158 A$\cdot$GeV and for ${\rm K}_{s}^{0}$ mesons at 158 A$\cdot$GeV are presented. The lambda multiplicities are studied as a function of collision energy together with AGS and RHIC measurements and compared to model predictions. A different energy dependence of the $Λ/π$ and $\barΛ/π$ is observed. The $\barΛ/Λ$ ratio shows a steep increase with collision energy. Evidence for a $\barΛ/\bar{\rm p}$ ratio greater than 1 is found at 40 A$\cdot$GeV.
The system size and centrality dependence of multiplicity fluctuations in nuclear collisions at $158A$ GeV as well as the energy dependence for the most central $Pb+Pb$ collisions were studied by the NA49 experiment at CERN SPS. A strong increase of fluctuations was observed with decreasing centrality in $C+C$, $Si+Si$ and $Pb+Pb$ collisions. The string hadronic models (UrQMD, Venus, HIJING, HSD) can not reproduce the observed increase. This may indicate a strong mixing of target and projectile contribution in a broad rapidity range. For the most central collisions at all SPS energies multipli…
We present a summary of measurements of strange particles performed by the experiment NA49 in central and minimum bias Pb+Pb collisions in the beam energy range 20A - 158A GeV. New results on Xi production in central Pb+Pb collisions and on Lambda, Xi production in minimum bias collisions are shown. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions of strange particles at different energies are compared. The energy dependence of the particle yields and ratios is discussed. NA49 measurements of the Lambda and Xi enhancement factors are shown for the first time.
We report on measurements of identified particle yields from Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62.4$ GeV made with the BRAHMS spectrometer. Here we will concentrate on the charged $K/π$ ratios as function of rapidity and baryo-chemical potential. We find that the $K/π$ ratios measured at different rapidities in the analysed dataset have a common dependence with the same ratios measured in mid-rapidity at SPS energies when plotted as function of the $\bar{p}/p$ ratio. The theoretical models used for comparison, UrQMD and AMPT, give a reasonable description of the particle yields at mid-rapid…
Rapidity and Energy Dependences of Temperatures and Volume Extracted from Identified Charged Hadron Spectra in Proton-Proton Collisions at a Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS)
New data with a minimum bias trigger for 158 GeV/nucleon Pb + Pb have been analyzed. Directed and elliptic flow as a function of rapidity of the particles and centrality of the collision are presented. The centrality dependence of the ratio of elliptic flow to the initial space elliptic anisotropy is compared to models.
We present the recent Balance Function (BF) results obtained by the NA49 collaboration for the pseudo-rapidity dependence of non-identified charged particle correlations for two SPS energies. Experimental results indicate a clear centrality dependence only in the mid-rapidity region. The results of an energy dependence study of the BF throughout the whole SPS energy range will also be discussed. In addition, the correlation of identified hadrons is studied and presented for the first time. The study of hadron correlation has also been extended in order to cope with the high multiplicity enviro…
This contribution discusses recent results from analysis of Ar+Sc interactions recorded with the NA61/SHINE detector at six beam momenta: 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A, 150A GeV/c at the CERN SPS. Rapidity and transverse mass spectra of pions obtained with the "h-" analysis method are presented and compared to results from p+p, Be+Be and Pb+Pb collisions.
The existence of the critical point (CP) of strongly interacting matter is still an open problem. An extensive strong interactions program including a search of the CP and the study of the onset of deconfinement was started by the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS. A two dimensional scan of the phase diagram scan is performed to search for the CP and to shed light on the phase transition region. This program includes studies of hadron production in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus interactions measured in a wide range of colliding energy and system size. Correlations betwe…
The various flow phenomena observed at energies between 50 AMeV and 160 AGeV are reviewed. I first define three types of flow: directed flow and elliptic flow, which are the two first Fourier components of the azimuthal distribution in non-central collisions; radial flow, which is deduced from an analysis of transverse momentum spectra in central collisions. Then, I review the observations of directed flow and elliptic flow, with emphasis on recent results. I discuss their dependence on various parameters: global geometry (impact parameter, mass numbers of colliding nuclei and bombarding energ…
We evaluate the spectra of produced particles (pions, kaons, antiprotons) from partonic cascades which may develop in the wake of heavy-ion collisions at CERN SPS energies and which may hadronize by formation of clusters which decay into hadrons. Using the experimental data obtained by NA35 and NA44 collaborations for S+S and Pb+Pb collisions, we conclude that the Monte Carlo implementation of the recently developed parton-cascade/cluster-hadronization model provides a reasonable description of the distributions of the particles produced in such collisions. While the rapidity distribution of t…
Mid-rapidity transverse mass spectra and multiplicity densities of charged and neutral kaons are reported for Au+Au collisions at $\snn$=130 GeV at RHIC. The spectra are exponential in transverse mass, with an inverse slope of about 280 MeV in central collisions. The multiplicity densities for these particles scale with the negative hadron pseudo-rapidity density. The charged kaon to pion ratios are $K^+/π^- = 0.161 \pm 0.002 {\rm (stat)} \pm 0.024 {\rm (syst)}$ and $K^-/π^- = 0.146 \pm 0.002 {\rm (stat)} \pm 0.022 {\rm (syst)}$ for the most central collisions. The $K^+/π^-$ ratio is lower tha…
The elliptic flow of Lambda hyperons has been measured by the NA49 collaboration at the CERN-SPS in semi-central Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV. The standard method of correlating particles with the event plane was used. Measurements of v2 near mid-rapidity are reported as a function of rapidity, centrality and transverse momentum. Elliptic flow of Lambda particles increases both with the impact parameter and with the transverse momentum. It is compared with v2 for pions and protons as well as with model calculations. The observation of significant elliptic flow and its mass dependence suggest s…
Results are presented on event-by-event fluctuations of transverse momenta $p_T$ in central Pb+Pb interactions at 20$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 80$A$, and 158$A$ GeV. The analysis was performed for charged particles at forward center-of-mass rapidity ($1.1 < y^{*}_π < 2.6$). Three fluctuation measures were studied: the distribution of average transverse momentum - $M(p_T)$ - in the event, the $Φ_{p_{T}}$ fluctuation measure and two-particle transverse momentum correlations. Fluctuations of $p_T$ are small and show no significant energy dependence in the energy range of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron…
The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS aims to discover the critical point of strongly interacting matter and study the properties of the onset of deconfinement. In order to reach these goals measurements of hadron production properties are performed in nucleus-nucleus, proton-proton and proton-nucleus interactions as a function of collision energy and size of the colliding nuclei. Inclusive spectra of identified hadrons in p+p interactions at the SPS energies are presented as a function of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity. The results are compared with the world data and t…
Multiplicity fluctuations of positively, negatively and all charged hadrons in the forward hemisphere were studied in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A and 158A GeV. The multiplicity distributions and their scaled variances are presented in dependence of collision energy as well as of rapidity and transverse momentum. The distributions have bell-like shape and their scaled variances are in the range from 0.8 to 1.2 without any significant structure in their energy dependence. No indication of the critical point in fluctuations are observed. The string-hadronic model UrQMD signific…
Production of Lambda and Antilambda hyperons was measured in central Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80, and 158 A$\cdot$GeV beam energy on a fixed target. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions are given for all three energies. The $Λ/π$ ratio at mid-rapidity and in full phase space shows a pronounced maximum between the highest AGS and 40 A$\cdot$GeV SPS energies, whereas the $\barΛ/π$ ratio exhibits a monotonic increase.
Two-proton and two-deuteron correlations have been studied in the target fragmentation region of central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV. Protons and deuterons were measured with the Plastic Ball spectrometer of the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The results of one-dimensional and multi-dimensional analyses using both the Bertsch-Pratt and Yano-Koonin-Podgoretsky parameterizations of the two-particle correlation functions are presented. The proton source exhibits a volume emission, while the deuteron source, with small outward radius, appears opaque. Both proton and deuteron sources have cross…
Proton rapidity distributions have been measured by the NA49 collaboration in 40 and 158 GeV/nucleon Pb+Pb collisions as function of collision centrality. We find that the shape and the yield per wounded nucleon in the mid-rapidity region vary little with centrality and are similar to the distributions obtained from inelastic p+p interactions. This observation is satisfactorily described by the transport models HSD and UrQMD, although there are significant differences in the details of the spectral shape between the experimental data and the models as well as between the models. The approximat…
This article describes calculations of the yield ratio of anti-particles to the yield of particles ($\bar{p}/p$, $\bar{d}/d$,$\overline{^{3}\mathrm{He}}$/$^{3}$He) in proton-proton and nuclear-nuclear interactions using the self-similarity parameter in the central rapidity region. The used approach is based on the study of relativistic nuclear interactions in the four-velocity space. The results of the calculations are compared with the existing experimental data in a wide center-of-mass energy range ($SPS$, $RHIC$, $LHC$). Within this approach the inclusive spectra of pions and kaons and rati…
We present the first measurement of directed flow ($v_1$) at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). $v_1$ is found to be consistent with zero at pseudorapidities $η$ from -1.2 to 1.2, then rises to the level of a couple of percent over the range $2.4 < |η| < 4$. The latter observation is similar to that from NA49 if the SPS rapidities are shifted by the difference in beam rapidity between RHIC and SPS. We studied the evolution of elliptic flow from p+p collisions through d+Au collision, and onto Au+Au collisions. Measurements of higher harmonics are presented and discussed.
$J/ψ$ production has been measured in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) during 2004 and 2005, respectively, at mid-rapidity ($|η| \le$ 0.35) via $J/ψ$ $\to$ $e^{+}e^{-}$ decay and at forward rapidity (1.2 $\le | η| \le$ 2.2) via $J/ψ$ $\to$ $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay. The nuclear modification factor ($R_{AA}$) of $J/ψ$ is presented as a function of the collision centrality for Au+Au collisions (final results) and Cu+Cu collisions (preliminary results) in both rapidity windows. These results are compared to SPS…
Event-by-event fluctuations in the multiplicities of charged particles and photons at SPS energies are discussed. Fluctuations are studied by controlling the centrality of the reaction and rapidity acceptance of the detectors. Results are also presented on the event-by-event study of correlations between the multiplicity of charged particles and photons to search for DCC-like signals.
It is observed that K-/pi in A+A and possibly p+p and pbar+p collisions follows an interesting systematic in omega, the pion transverse energy per unit of rapidity and transverse overlap area. The systematics show a linear increase of K-/pi with omega in the AGS and SPS energy regime and a saturation at RHIC energy. The systematics indicate that omega might be the relevant variable underlying K-/pi. At high energy, the omega variable is related to the gluon saturation scale in high density QCD, and perhaps to the initial energy density in the Bjorken picture.
The NA49 experiment has collected comprehensive data on particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions over the whole SPS beam energies range, the critical energy domain where the expected phase transition to a deconfined phase is expected to occur. The latest results from Pb+Pb collisions between 20$A$ GeV and 158$A$ GeV on baryon stopping and light nuclei production as well as those for strange hyperons are presented. The measured data on $p$, $\bar{p}$, $Λ$, $\barΛ$, $Ξ^-$ and $\barΞ^+$ production were used to evaluate the rapidity distributions of net-baryons at SPS energies and to comp…
NA61/SHINE is a fixed target experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The main goals of the experiment are to discover the critical point of strongly interacting matter and to study the properties of the onset of deconfinement. In order to reach these goals, a study of hadron production properties is performed in nucleus-nucleus, proton-proton and proton-nucleus interactions as a function of collision energy and size of the colliding nuclei. In this talk, the newest preliminary results on kaon spectra produced in Ar+Sc collisions at three beam momenta (30A, 40A and 75A) will be shown. …
This paper presents the results for the charged-particle multiplicity and transverse energy distributions at mid-rapidity in Au - Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=130$ GeV measured with the PHENIX detector at RHIC. The values of $dN_{ch}/dη_{|η=0}$ and $dE_{T}/dη_{|η=0}$, analyzed as a function of centrality, show a consistent steady rise. For the 5% most central collisions they are $\sim70$% larger compared to the SPS results for Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=17.2$ GeV. The ratio of $<E_{T}>/<N_{ch}>$ remains constant as a function of centrality at 0.8 GeV, as also observed at the S…
Data on hadronic particle production in symmetric nuclear collisions from SIS/BEVALAC to SPS energies are reviewed. The main emphasis is put on the production of pions, kaons, and antibaryons. Global features will be discussed in terms of rapidity and transverse momentum distributions and the total energy stored in produced particles. Pion and kaon production probabilities are studied as function of beam energy and their distribution in polar and azimuthal angle. Special emphasis is put on medium effects expected for kaons in dense nuclear matter at low energies. An enhanced strange particle y…
We present recent results obtained by the BRAHMS experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) for the systems of Au + Au and Cu + Cu at \rootsnn{200} and at 62.4 GeV, and p + p at \rootsnn{200}. Nuclear modification factors for Au + Au and Cu + Cu collisions are presented. Analysis of anti-particle to particle ratios as a function of rapidity and collision energy reveal that particle populations at the chemical freeze-out stage for heavy-ion reactions at and above SPS energies are controlled by the baryon chemical potential. From the particle spectra we deduce significant radial ex…
NA61/SHINE at the CERN SPS is a fixed-target experiment pursuing a rich physics program including measurements for heavy ion, neutrino and cosmic ray physics. The main goal of the ion program is to explore the most interesting $T, mu_{B}$ region of the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. We plan to study the properties of the onset of deconfinement and to search for the signatures of the critical point. The search is performed by varying collision energy (13A-158A GeV/c) and system size (p+p, Be+Be, Ar+Ca, Xe+La). Thanks to its large acceptance and excellent particle identification c…
The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has measured J/psi production for rapidities 2.2 < y < 2.2 in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. The J/psi invariant yield and nuclear modification factor R_AA as a function of centrality, transverse momentum and rapidity are reported. A suppression of J/psi relative to binary collision scaling of proton-proton reaction yields is observed. Models which describe the lower energy J/Psi data at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) invoking only J/psi destruction based on the local medium density would predict a significantly…
Baseline computations of the Cronin effect in nuclear collisions at energies spanning the SPS and the RHIC accelerators are performed in the Glauber-Eikonal model, which ascribes the effect to initial-state incoherent multiple parton scatterings. The model accounts very well for the mid-rapidity Cronin effect in hadron-nucleus collisions in the 27-200 GeV center of mass energy range, and will be extended to nucleus-nucleus collisions. The computations are performed under the assumption that the partons do not interact with the medium produced in the collision. Therefore, medium effects such as…
The production of charged pions, protons and deuterons has been studied in central collisions of 58Ni on 58Ni at incident beam energies of 1.06, 1.45 and 1.93 AGeV. The dependence of transverse-momentum and rapidity spectra on the beam energy and on the centrality of the collison is presented. It is shown that the scaling of the mean rapidity shift of protons established for AGS and SPS energies is valid down to 1 AGeV. The degree of nuclear stopping is discussed; the IQMD transport model reproduces the measured proton rapidity spectra for the most central events reasonably well, but does not …
Results are presented for directed flow of negatively charged pions measured relative to the spectator plane in Pb+Pb collisions at the beam energy 40A GeV recorded by the NA49 experiment at CERN. The measure-ments were performed as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum in two classes of collision centrality. The projectile spectator symmetry plane is estimated using the transverse segmentation of the forward hadron calorimeters. Analysis details related to event selection and particle dentification are provided along with a description of the procedure used to apply corrections for t…
Production of $d$, $t$, and $^3$He nuclei in central Pb+Pb interactions was studied at five collision energies ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 6.3, 7.6, 8.8, 12.3, and 17.3 GeV) with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS. Transverse momentum spectra, rapidity distributions, and particle ratios were measured. Yields are compared to predictions of statistical models. Phase-space distributions of light nuclei are discussed and compared to those of protons in the context of a coalescence approach. The coalescence parameters $B_2$ and $B_3$, as well as coalescence radii for $d$ and $^3$He were determined as a functi…
Transverse energy ($E_T$) has been measured with both of its components, namely hadronic ($E_T^{had}$) and electromagnetic ($E_T^{em}$) in a common phase space at mid-rapidity for 62.4 GeV Au+Au collisions by the STAR experiment. $E_T$ production with centrality and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ is studied with similar measurements from SPS to RHIC and is compared with a final state gluon saturation model (EKRT). The most striking feature is the observation of a nearly constant value of $E_T/N_{ch} \sim 0.8$ GeV from AGS, SPS to RHIC. The initial energy density estimated by the boost-invariant Bjorken hydro…
