One of the basic assumptions of the string model is that as a result of a DIS in nucleus a single string arises, which then breaks into hadrons. However the pomeron exchange considered in this work, leads to the production of two strings in the one event. The hadrons produced in these events have smaller formation lengths, than those with the same energy produced in the single string events. As a consequence, they undergo more substantial absorption in the nuclear matter.
In the framework of the Schwinger Model for percolating strings we establish a general relation between multiplicity and transverse momentum square distributions in hadron-hadron and heavy ion collisions. Some of our results agree with the Colour Glass Condensate model.
Descriptions of hadrons and glueballs can be constructed using strings to preserve gauge invariance. We show how this string dependence may be removed to all orders in perturbation theory.
Nuclear attenuation of the multi-hadron systems in the string model is considered. The improved two-scale model with set of parameters obtained recently for the single hadron attenuation is used for calculation of the multiplicity ratios of the one-, two- and three-hadron systems electroproduced on nuclear and deuterium targets. The comparison of the features of the one-, two- and three-hadron systems is performed. The predictions of the model for multiplicity ratios of multi-hadron systems as functions of different convenient variables are presented.
The multiple production processes of secondary hadrons in proton-antiproton scattering are divided into three types. The first type is a shower of secondary hadrons produced from gluon string decay, the second type is a shower of secondary hadrons produced from two quark strings decay and the third is a shower produced from three quark strings decay. At the same time there are only two types for proton-proton scattering - shower from gluon string and shower from two quark strings. These showers do not correspond to pomeron showers originating from cuts of one, two, three, ... pomerons. Multipl…
We suggest and explore two observables which may clarify the origin of the attenuation of semi-inclusive hadron production reported in DIS on nuclear targets.
We consider various hadron models with a string carrying $n=3$ massive points (quarks): Y configuration, linear baryon model $q$-$q$-$q$ and the closed string. For these models classical rotational states (planar uniform rotations) are tested for stability with respect to small disturbances. It is shown that rotations of all mentioned models are unstable, but nature of this instability is different. For the model Y the instability results from existence of multiple real frequencies in the spectrum of small disturbances, but for the linear model and the closed string the similar spectra contain…
We argue that recent NA49 results on multiparticle distributions and fluctuations, as a function of the number of participant nucleons, suggest that percolation plays an important role in particle production at high densities.
Nuclear attenuation of the two-hadron system is considered in the string model. The two-scale model and its improved version with two different choices of constituent formation time and sets of parameters obtained earlier for the single hadron attenuation, are used to describe available experimental data for the $z$-dependence of subleading hadron, whereas satisfactory agreement with the experimental data has been observed. A model prediction for $ν$-dependence of the nuclear attenuation of the two-hadron system is also presented.
Hadrons interaction at high energies is carried out by one color gluon exchange. All quarks and gluons contained in colliding hadrons take part in interaction and production of particles. The contribution of multiple parton interactions is negligible. Multiple hadrons production at high energies occurs only in three types of processes. The first process is hadrons production in gluon string, the second is hadrons production in two quark strings and the third is hadrons production in three quark strings. In proton-proton interaction production of only gluon string and two quark strings is possi…
We argue that recent NA49 results on multiparticle distributions and fluctuations, as a function of the number of participant nucleons, suggest that percolation plays an important role in particle production at high densities.
In the hadroproduction of charm in the context of string fragmentation, the pull of a beam remnant at the other end of a string may give a charm hadron more energy than the perturbatively produced charm quark. The collapse of a low-mass string to a single hadron is the extreme case in this direction, and gives rise to asymmetries between charm and anticharm hadron spectra. We study these phenomena, and develop models that describe the characteristics not only of the charm hadrons but also of the associated event.
The improved two-scale model is used to perform the fit to the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) data of HERMES experiment at DESY on nuclear targets. The ratio of hadron multiplicity on nuclear target to the deuterium one is chosen as observable, as usually. The two-parameter's fit gives satisfactory agreement with the data in term of $χ^2$ criterium. Best values of parameters are then used to calculate the nuclear multiplicity ratio for the hadrons not included in the fit procedure.
Relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions create a "fireball" of strongly interacting matter at high energy density. At very high energy this is suggested to be partonic matter, but at lower energy it should consist of yet unknown hadronic, perhaps coherent degrees of freedom. The freeze-out of this high density state to a hadron gas can tell us about properties of fireball matter.
High energy hadronic and nuclear interactions are described within Gribov's Reggeon scheme. An approach to re-summation of enhanced Pomeron graphs is proposed. The latter is applied to develop a new Monte Carlo model which treats non-linear interaction effects explicitely in individual hadronic collisions. On the other hand, we discuss a possible generalization of the scheme, which allows to account also for pQCD effects. In particular, this offers a possibility to fix model parameters on the basis of data on hadron-hadron cross sections, hadronic multi-particle production, and on total and di…
We revisit the recipe for hadron formation in the Lund string hadronization model. Given an incoming quark or quark-diquark pair, weights for hadron formation are updated to take hyperfine splitting effects arising from the mass difference between u, d-type and s-type quarks. We find that the procedure improves the description of hadron yields in $\mathrm{e}^+\mathrm{e}^-$ collisions and the $ϕ$ cross section in neutral current DIS. We also show results for proton collisions, and discuss the future use of this study in the context of small system collectivity.
Massive states (of order 10 Gev and more) of hadron string (with scale 1 Gev) can have very small coupling constants with usual baryons of the Universe. Corresponding mean times for them are found to be order and even more than the age of the Universe. They are proposed as possible candidates for weak interacting massive particles (WIMP) of Dark Matter.
The Large Hadron Collider promises to discover new physics beyond the Standard Model. An exciting possibility is the formation of string resonances at the TeV scale. In this article, we show how string resonances may be detected at the LHC in the $pp\toγ+jet$ channel. Our study is based on event shape variables, missing energy and momentum, maximum transverse momentum of photons and dijet invariant mass. These observables provide interesting signatures which enable us to discriminate string events from the Standard Model background.
Transverse momentum event-by-event fluctuations are studied within the string-hadronic model of high energy nuclear collisions, LUCIAE. Data on non-statistical pT fluctuations in p+p interactions are reproduced. Fluctuations of similar magnitude are predicted for nucleus-nucleus collisions, in contradiction to the preliminary NA49 results. The introduction of a string clustering mechanism (Firecracker Model) leads to a further, significant increase of pT fluctuations for nucleus-nucleus collisions. Secondary hadronic interactions, as implemented in LUCIAE, cause only a small reduction of pT fl…
A new approach to the analysis of soft and semihard hadron processes is suggested. In the frame of the Quark-Gluon String Model the interaction of valence quarks and diquarks and sea quarks (antiquarks) of colliding hadrons is taken into account. This one is calculated as the exchange by one nonpertubative gluon, i.e., the cut-off parameter in the gluonic propagator is included. This one allows us to analise the inclusive hadron spectra in hadron collisions at transverse momenta up to 3-4 Gev/c.
We study nuclear shadowing in $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ production in hadron-nucleus interactions and in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. %We define the regions in $x_f$ where nuclear shadowing begins %to set in for \jp\ and \up. As a consequence of the perturbative $Q^2$-dependence of gluon shadowing, we predict that $Υ$ production is less suppressed than the $J/ψ$. We show that antishadowing leads to enhanced \jp\ production at $x_f \lesssim 0$, an effect reduced for $Υ$ production.
Hadron production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of leptons from nuclei is an ideal tool to determine and constrain the transport coefficient in cold nuclear matter. The leading-order computations for hadron multiplicity ratios are performed by means of the SW quenching weights and the analytic parameterizations of quenching weights based on BDMPS formalism. The theoretical results are compared to the HERMES positively charged pions production data with the quarks hadronization occurring outside the nucleus. With considering the nuclear geometry effect on hadron production, our pr…
Coulomb-nuclear interference in the single transverse spin asymmetry A_N is often considered as a possible absolute polarimeter for proton beams. The main uncertainty in this is the unknown hadronic spin-flip amplitude. This uncertainty is analyzed here in the context of the challenge of a 5% polarization measurement at RHIC. Possible constraints on the spin-flip amplitude from measurements of the differential cross-section and the double transverse spin asymmetry A_{NN} are discussed.
We present the description of HIPPOPO (Hadron Induced Particle Production Off Pomeron Outpour), a computer code aimed at the simulation of hadron production in hadron-hadron collisions at high energies via the multipomeron exchange mechanism. We briefly remind the theoretical inputs from the Quark-Gluon String Model and give a detailed description of program components.
The quark-hadron phase transition at finite baryon chemical potential is investigated in the extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in which the scalar-vector eight-point interaction is included holding the chiral symmetry. By comparing a pressure of the symmetric nuclear matter with that of the quark matter, the realized phase at given baryon density is determined. As a result, the first order quark-hadron phase transition is derived where the deconfinement transition occurs after the chiral symmetry restoration in this model.
Hadron production in lepton-nucleus deep inelastic scattering is studied in a model including quark energy loss and nuclear absorption. The leading-order computations for hadron multiplicity ratios are presented and compared with the selected HERMES experimental data with the quark hadronization occurring inside the nucleus by means of the hadron formation time. It is shown that with increase of the energy fraction carried by the hadron, the nuclear suppression on hadron multiplicity ratio from nuclear absorption gets bigger. It is found that when hadronization occurs inside the nucleus, the n…
For the relativistic string with massive ends the small disturbances of its rotational motion (quasirotational states) are investigated. They are presented in the form of Fourier series with the two types of oscillatory modes. They have the form of stationary waves correspondently in the rotational plane and in the orthogonal direction. The calculated values of the energy and angular momentum of these states give us possibility to describe higher radial excitations for hadrons with the help of the planar quasirotational oscillatory modes of the string with massive ends.
The search for stable heavy exotic hadrons is a promising way to observe new physics processes at collider experiments. The discovery potential for such particles can be enhanced or suppressed by their interactions with detector material. This paper describes a model for the interactions in matter of stable hadrons containing an exotic quark of charges $\pm {1/3}e$ or $\pm {2/3}e$ using Regge phenomenology and the Quark Gluon String Model. The influence of such interactions on searches at the LHC is also discussed.
The multiple scatterings incurred by a hard quark produced in a nuclear medium induce the emission of soft gluons which carry a fraction of the quark energy and eventually affect the hadronization process. Here, the depletion of semi-inclusive hadron spectra in DIS on various nuclei (N, Ne, Cu, Kr) is computed as a function of nu and z to leading order in alpha_s through medium-modified fragmentation functions. Using the transport coefficient q previously determined from Drell-Yan production, the predictions are found to be in good agreement with EMC and HERMES preliminary data. Calculations o…
We calculate nuclear modification factors $R_{dAu}$, central-to-peripheral ratios, $R_{CP}$, and pseudorapidity asymmetries $Y_{Asym}$ in deuteron-gold collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV in the framework of leading-order (LO) perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. We use the Eskola-Kolhinen-Salgado (EKS), the Frankfurt-Guzey-Strikman (FGS) and the Hirai-Kumano-Nagai (HKN) nuclear parton distribution functions and the Albino-Kramer-Kniehl (AKK) fragmentation functions in our calculations. Results are compared to experimental data from the BRAHMS and STAR collaborations.
We consider QCD based model of hadrons interaction in which gluons density in wave function of initial state is low in rapidity space and real hadrons are produced by decay of color field strings. Hadrons production processes in pp and p antip interactions differ on principle. There are three types of inelastic processes in p antip collision. The first type is production of secondary hadrons shower from decay of gluon string. The second type is shower produced from decay of two quark strings and the third one -- from decay of three quark strings. At the same time there are only two types of in…
Nuclei are unique analyzers of the space-time development of jets at early stage. We argue that the gluon bremsstrahlung, rather than the color string, is the main mechanism of hadronization of highly virtual quarks produced in a hard interaction. It results in an energy- and time-independent density of energy loss, like a color string, but steeply dependent on the quark virtuality. Effects of formation zone (FZ) and color transparency (CT) substantially affect the jet quenching in a nuclear matter. The latter also plays an important role in the broadening of transverse momentum distribution o…
The properties of a helix-like shaped QCD string are studied in the context of the Lund fragmentation model, where the concept of a 3-dimensional structure of the gluon field offers an alternative aproach to the modelling of the transverse momentum of hadrons. The paper is focused on the phenomenology of the model, which introduces correlations between transverse and longitudinal components of hadrons, as well as azimuthal ordering of hadrons along the string. The similarities between 2-particle correlations stemming from the helix-string structure and those commonly attributed to the Bose-Ein…
Dynamics of a light quark in the field of static source (heavy-light meson) is studied using the nonlinear Dirac equation, derived recently. Special attention is paid to the contribution of magnetic correlators and it is found that it yields a significant increase of string tension at intermediate distances. The spectrum of heavy-light mesons is computed with account of this contribution and compared to experimental and lattice data.
We study the clustering of colour strings in the transverse plane of nucleus-nucleus collisions and argue that deconfinement sets in when the string density within a cluster reaches a critical value. We show that this implies a minimal cluster size at the onset of deconfinement, which in turn results in discontinuous behaviour for J/Psi suppression.
In the present work, Monte-Carlo toy model with repulsing quark-gluon strings in hadron-hadron collisions is described. String repulsion creates transverse boosts for the string decay products, giving modifications of observables. As an example, long-range correlations between mean transverse momenta of particles in two observation windows are studied in MC toy simulation of the heavy-ion collisions.
Current studies on heavy hadrons in nuclear medium are reviewed with a summary of the basic theoretical concepts of QCD, namely chiral symmetry, heavy quark spin symmetry, and the effective Lagrangian approach. The nuclear matter is an interesting place to study the properties of heavy hadrons from many different points of view. We emphasize the importance of the following topics: (i) charm/bottom hadron-nucleon interaction, (ii) structure of charm/bottom nuclei, and (iii) QCD vacuum properties and hadron modifications in nuclear medium. We pick up three different groups of heavy hadrons, quar…
We propose a possible scheme for getting the known QCD scaling laws within string theory. In particular, we consider amplitudes for exclusive scattering of hadrons at large momentum transfer, hadronic form factors and distribution functions.
New developments in holographic QCD are described in this talk in the context of the correspondence between string states in AdS and light-front wavefunctions of hadronic states in physical space-time.
We argue that in the measured $p_T$ domain of RHIC, collisional rather than the radiative energy loss is the dominant mechanism for jet quenching. Accordingly we calculate nuclear suppression factor for light hadrons by taking only the elastic energy loss in sharp contrast with the previous calculations where only the radiative loss are considered.
Color flux tubes (quark-gluon strings), formed at early stages of hadron-hadron collisions, may overlap in case of sufficiently high densities and interact, producing long-range azimuthal correlations. In the hypothesis of repulsive interaction, each string may acquire, before the hadronization, the additional transverse boost, which is an efficient sum of all accounted string-string interactions. This modifies transverse momenta to the particles formed in string decay, leading to modification of event-wise observables, like azimuthal asymmetry of two-particle correlations, over a wide range o…
Since large $p_T$ particles in high-energy hadronic or nuclear collisions come from jet fragmentation, jet quenching due to parton energy loss in dense matter will cause the suppression of large $p_T$ hadron spectra in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Assuming an effective energy loss $dE/dx$ for the high $E_T$ partons, effective jet fragmentation functions are constructed in which leading hadrons will be suppressed. Using such effective fragmentation functions, high $p_T$ hadron spectra and particle suppression factors relative to $pp$ collisions are estimated in central high-energy nuclear …
In this talk I first discuss predictions based on QCD sum rules and on hadronic models for the properties of vector mesons in the nuclear medium. I then describe possible experimental signatures and show detailed predictions for dilepton invariant mass spectra with a special emphasis on nuclear reactions involving elementary incoming beams and nuclear targets. I will in particular illustrate that the sensitivity of pion and photon induced reactions to in-medium effects is nearly as large as that of heavy-ion reactions.

In hadron-nucleus interactions, the stronger is nuclear shadowing in the total cross section the higher is the multiplicity of secondary hadrons. In deep inelastic scattering, nuclear shadowing at small $x$ is associated with the hadronlike behaviour of photons as contrasted to the pointlike behaviour in the non-shadowing region of large $x$. In this paper we predict smaller mean multiplicity of secondary hadrons, and weaker fragmentation of the target nucleus, in deep inelastic leptoptoproduction on nuclei in the shadowing region of small $x$ as compared to the non-shadowing region of large $…
We compute the one-loop string corrections to the Wilson loop, glueball Regge trajectory and stringy hadron masses in the Witten model of non supersymmetric, large-N Yang-Mills theory. The classical string configurations corresponding to the above field theory objects are respectively: open straight strings, folded closed spinning strings, and strings orbiting in the internal part of the supergravity background. For the rectangular Wilson loop we show that besides the standard Luescher term, string corrections provide a rescaling of the field theory string tension. The one-loop corrections to …
We examine whether it is possible to simultaneously describe the experimental data from RHIC and LHC on nuclear suppression of light hadrons and non-photonic single electrons in the pQCD picture of parton energy loss. We perform calculations accounting for both radiative and collisional energy loss. We show that once the coupling constant is fixed from comparison with data on the nuclear modification factor for light hadrons it gives a satisfactory agreement with data on the electron R_{AA} and azimuthal anisotropy v_2. Our results show that the collisional mechanism is only of marginal signif…
We study deep inelastic scattering at large-'t Hooft coupling and finite $x$ from gauge/string duality beyond single-hadron final states which gives the leading large-$N_c$ contribution. Within the supergravity approximation, we calculate the subleading large-$N_c$ contribution by introducing an extra hadron into the final states. We find the contribution from these double-hadron final states will dominate in the Bjorken limit $q^2\rightarrow \infty$ compared with the single-hadron states. We discuss the implications of our results.
We explore how nuclear modifications to the nucleon parton distributions affect production of high-$p_T$ hadrons in heavy ion collisions. We perform a leading order calculation of the high-$p_T$ charged pion, kaon and proton spectra using standard fragmentation functions and shadowing parameterizations. We also consider alternate models of shadowing. Near midrapidity, shadowing is a small effect and cannot explain the large observed suppression of high-$p_T$ hadrons. We also consider the isospin difference between protons and nuclei and find that it is also a small effect on high-$p_T$ hadron …
I propose a scaling analysis of the hadron multiplicity ratio measured in Deep Inelastic Scattering on nuclear targets as a tool to distinguish energy loss and nuclear absorption effects on hadron suppression in cold nuclear matter. The proposed scaling variable is a function of the hadron fractional energy and of the virtual photon energy. Its functional form, which depends on a parameter λ, can be fixed by general theoretical considerations and encompasses both energy loss and absorption models. The parameter λis fitted to HERMES experimental data and shown to favor prehadron nuclear absorpt…
The problem of understanding the nuclear effects observed in lepton-nucleus deep-inelastic-scattering (the EMC effect) is still with us. Standard nuclear models (those using only hadronic degrees of freedom) are not able to account for the EMC effect. Thus it is necessary to understand how the nuclear medium modifies quark wave functions in the nucleus. Possibilities for such modifications, represented by the quark meson coupling model, and the suppression of point-like-configurations are discussed, and methods to experimentally choose between these are reviewed.
I examine the role of final state interactions in cold nuclear matter in modifying hadron production on nuclear targets with leptonic or hadronic beams. I demonstrate the extent to which available experimental data in electron-nucleus collisions can give direct information on final state effects in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. For hadron-nucleus collisions, a theoretical estimate based on a parton energy loss model tested in lepton-nucleus collisions shows a large effect on mid-rapidity hadrons at fixed target experiments. At RHIC energy, the effect is large for negative rapi…
We compute the inclusive spectrum of produced particles in e+e- annihilation in confining gauge theories that have a gravity dual and show that the momentum distribution exhibits the thermal behavior.
The dynamics of partons, hadrons and strings in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is analyzed within the novel Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, which is applied to Pb+Pb collisions from 20 to 160 A GeV in order to explore the space-time regions of 'partonic matter'. We find that even central collisions at the top-SPS energy of 158 A GeV show a large fraction of non-partonic, i.e. hadronic or string-like matter, which can be viewed as a hadronic corona. Furthermore, we observe that the partonic phase has a very low impact on rapidity distributions of hadrons but a …
We examine the effects of color screening on the transition of a parton plasma into a hadron gas at RHIC energies. It is found that as expected, color screening posed itself as a significant barrier for hadronization. Parton-hadron conversion would therefore be delayed and prolonged when compared to that occuring in a vacuum. Due to the on-going expansion, the resulting hadron densities are lowered. Parton equilibration is also shown to be seriously disrupted in the process.
