We investigate the effect of Pauli non-locality in the heavy-ion optical potential on sub-barrier fusion reactions. The São Paulo potential, which takes into account the Pauli non-locality and has been widely used in analyzing elastic scattering, has also recently been applied to heavy-ion fusion. However, the approximation employed in deriving the São Paulo potential, based on the Perey-Buck semi-classical treatment of neutron induced reactions, must be assessed for charged particles tunneling through a barrier. It is the purpose of this note to look into this question. We consider the widely studied system $^{16}$O + $^{208}$Pb at energies that span the barrier region from 10 MeV below to 10 MeV above. It seems that the non-locality plays a minor role. We find the São Paulo potential to be quite adequate throughout the region.
The fusion cross sections from well above barrier to extreme sub-barrier energies have been analysed using the energy (E) and angular momentum (L) dependent barrier penetration model ({\small{ELDBPM}}). From this analysis, the adiabatic limits of fusion barriers have been determined for a wide range of heavy ion systems. The empirical prescription of Wilzynska and Wilzynski has been used with modified radius parameter and surface tension coefficient values consistent with the parameterization of the nuclear masses. The adiabatic fusion barriers calculated from this prescription are in good agr…
The Skyrme energy density functional has been applied to the study of heavy-ion fusion reactions. The barriers for fusion reactions are calculated by the Skyrme energy density functional with proton and neutron density distributions determined by using restricted density variational (RDV) method within the same energy density functional together with semi-classical approach known as the extended semi-classical Thomas-Fermi method. Based on the fusion barrier obtained, we propose a parametrization of the empirical barrier distribution to take into account the multi-dimensional character of real…
The shell correction is proposed in the improved isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics (ImIQMD) model, which plays an important role in heavy-ion fusion reactions near Coulomb barrier. By using the ImIQMD model, the static and dynamical fusion barriers, dynamical barrier distribution in the fusion reactions are analyzed systematically. The fusion and capture excitation functions for a series of reaction systems are calculated and compared with experimental data. It is found that the fusion cross sections for neutron-rich systems increase obviously, and the strong shell effects of two co…
Fusion-evaporation cross-sections σevr in reactions known for fusion hindrance phenomenon in coupled-channels calculations at below-barrier energies, are studied in terms of the dynamical cluster-decay model (DCM) of one of us (RKG) and Collaborators and the Wong formula extended by us, both based on proximity potential, by using the concept of "barrier modification" at sub-barrier energies, first advocated by Misicu and Esbensen for M3Y potential. The DCM is shown to contain the "barrier lowering" as its inbuilt characteristic, and the same is found essential, and introduced empirically, in t…
We investigate the role of deformation on the fusion probability around the barrier using the Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock theory with a full Skyrme force. We obtain a distribution of fusion probabilities around the nominal barrier due to the different contributions of the various orientations of the deformed nucleus at the touching point. It is also shown that the long range Coulomb reorientation reduces the fusion probability around the barrier.
The roles of nuclear deformation and neutron transfer in sub-barrier capture process are studied within the quantum diffusion approach. The change of the deformations of colliding nuclei with neutron exchange can crucially influence the sub-barrier fusion. The comparison of the calculated capture cross section and the measured fusion cross section in various reactions at extreme sub- barrier energies gives us information about the fusion and quasifission.
Total (complete + incomplete) fusion excitation functions of $^{6,7}$Li on $^{59}$Co and $^{209}$Bi targets around the Coulomb barrier are obtained using a new continuum discretized coupled channel (CDCC) method of calculating fusion. The relative importance of breakup and bound-state structure effects on total fusion is particularly investigated. The effect of breakup on fusion can be observed in the total fusion excitation function. The breakup enhances the total fusion at energies just around the barrier, whereas it hardly affects the total fusion at energies well above the barrier. The dif…
We discuss the applicability of the energy density formalism (EDF) for heavy-ion fusion reactions at sub-barrier energies. For this purpose, we calculate the fusion excitation function and the fusion barrier distribution for the reactions of $^{16}$O with $^{154,}$$^{144}$Sm,$^{186}$W and $^{208}$Pb with the coupled-channels method. We also discuss the effect of saturation property on the fusion cross section for the reaction between two $^{64}$Ni nuclei, in connection to the so called steep fall-off phenomenon of fusion cross sections at deep sub-barrier energies.
A detailed study fusion of neutron-rich colliding nuclei is performed using various isospin dependent potentials. For present study, Three different series namely, Ne-Ne, Ca-Ca, and Zr-Zr are taken into account and N/Z ratio.A monotonous increase (decrease) in the fusion barrier positions (heights) using a unified second order nonlinear parametrization in the normalized fusion barrier positions and heights with (N/Z-1) is presented. These predications are in good agreement with the available theoretical as well as experimental results.
[Background] Significant enhancement of sub-barrier fusion cross sections owing to neutron rearrangement with positive $Q$-values were found for many combinations of colliding nuclei. However several experimental results on fusion reactions were reported recently in which such enhancement has not been observed in spite of a possibility for neutron rearrangement with positive $Q$-values. [Purpose] We aim to clarify much better the mechanism of neutron rearrangement in sub-barrier fusion reactions to find the other requirements (beside positive $Q$-value) which favour (or prevent) sub-barrier fu…
It is suggested that the full nucleus-nucleus potential consists of the macroscopic and shell-correction parts. The deep sub-barrier fusion hindrance takes place in a nucleus-nucleus system with a strong negative shell-correction contribution to the full heavy-ion potential, while a strong positive shell-correction contribution to the full potential leads to weak enhancement of the deep sub-barrier fusion cross section.
Existing data on near-barrier fusion excitation functions of medium and heavy nucleus-nucleus systems have been analyzed using a simple diffused barrier formula derived assuming the Gaussian shape of the barrier height distributions. Fusion cross section is obtained by folding the Gaussian barrier distribution with the classical expression for the fusion cross section for a fixed barrier. The energy dependence of the fusion cross section, thus obtained, provides good description to the existing data on near-barrier fusion and capture excitation functions for medium and heavy nucleus-nucleus sy…
The relationship between the threshold energy for a deep sub-barrier fusion hindrance phenomenon and the energy at which the regime of interaction changes (the turning-off of the nuclear forces and friction) in the sub-barrier capture process, is studied within the quantum diffusion approach. The quasielastic barrier distribution is shown to be a useful tool to clarify whether the slope of capture cross section changes at sub-barrier energies.
The effect of continuum couplings in the fusion of the halo nucleus $^{11}$Be on $^{208}$Pb around the Coulomb barrier is studied using a three-body model within a coupled discretised continuum channels (CDCC) formalism. We investigate in particular the role of continuum-continuum couplings. These are found to hinder total, complete and incomplete fusion processes. Couplings to the projectile $1p_{1/2}$ bound excited state redistribute the complete and incomplete fusion cross sections, but the total fusion cross section remains nearly constant. Results show that continuum-continuum couplings e…
The enhancement of the sub-barrier fusion cross sections was explained as the lowering of the dynamical fusion barriers within the framework of the improved isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (ImIQMD) model. The numbers of nucleon transfer in the neck region are appreciably dependent on the incident energies, but strongly on the reaction systems. A comparison of the neck dynamics is performed for the symmetric reactions $^{58}$Ni+$^{58}$Ni and $^{64}$Ni+$^{64}$Ni at energies in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier. An increase of the ratios of neutron to proton in the neck region at i…
Using the three versions of proximity potentials, namely proximity 1977, proximity 1988, and proximity 2000, we present a pocket formula for fusion barrier heights and positions. This was achieved by analyzing as many as 400 reactions with mass between 15 and 296. Our parametrized formula can reproduced the exact barrier heights and positions within an accuracy of $\pm1%$. A comparison with the experimental data is also in good agreement.
Using different Skyrme interactions, we have carried out a comparative analysis of fusion barriers for a wide range of interacting nuclei in the framework of semiclassical Skyrme energy density formalism. The results of our calculations reveal that SVI, SII, and SIII Skyrme forces are able to reproduce the empirical values of barrier heights with higher accuracy than the other considered forces in this formalism. It is also shown that the calculated nucleus-nucleus potentials derived from such Skyrme interactions are able to explain the fusion cross sections at energies near and above the barr…
With the quantum diffusion approach the unexpected behavior of fusion cross section, angular momentum, and astrophysical S-factor at sub-barrier energies has been revealed. Out of the region of short-range nuclear interaction and action of friction at turning point the decrease rate of the cross section under the barrier becomes smaller. The calculated results for the reactions with spherical nuclei are in a good agreement with the existing experimental data.
The role of neutron transfers is investigated in the fusion process below the Coulomb barrier by analyzing 32S+90Zr and 32S+96Zr as benchmark reactions. A full coupled-channel calculation of the fusion excitation functions has been performed for both systems by using multi-neutron transfer coupling for the more neutron-rich reaction. The enhancement of fusion cross sections for 32S+96Zr is well reproduced at sub-barrier energies by NTFus code calculations including the coupling of the neutron-transfer channels following the Zagrebaev semiclassical model. We found similar effects for 40Ca+90Zr …
Fusion barriers are determined in the framework of the Skyrme energy-density functional together with the semi-classical approach known as the Extended Thomas-Fermi method. The barriers obtained in this way with the Skyrme interaction SkM* turn out to be close to those generated by phenomenological models like those using the proximity potentials. It is also shown that the location and the structure of the fusion barrier in the vicinity of its maximum and beyond can be quite accurately described by a simple analytical form depending only on the masses and the relative isospin of target and pro…
An improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model is proposed. By using this model, the properties of ground state of nuclei from $^{6}$Li to $^{208}$Pb can be described very well with one set of parameters. The fusion reactions for $^{40}$Ca+$^{90}$Zr, $^{40}$Ca+$^{96}$Zr and $^{48}$Ca+$^{90}$Zr at energy near barrier are studied by this model. The experimental data of the fusion cross sections for $^{40}$Ca+$^{90,96}$Zr at the energy near barrier can be reproduced remarkably well without introducing any new parameters. The mechanism for the enhancement of fusion probability for fusion reactions w…
We carry out realistic coupled-channels calculations for $^{11}$Be + $^{208}$Pb reaction in order to discuss the effects of break-up of the projectile nucleus on sub-barrier fusion. We discretize in energy the particle continuum states, which are associated with the break-up process, and construct the coupling form factors to these states on a microscopic basis. The incoming boundary condition is employed in solving coupled-channels equations, which enables us to define the flux for complete fusion inside the Coulomb barrier. It is shown that complete fusion cross sections are significantly en…
By using the updated improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model in which a surface-symmetry potential term has been introduced for the first time, the excitation functions for fusion reactions of $^{40,48}$Ca+$^{90,96}$Zr at energies around the Coulomb barrier have been studied. The experimental data of the fusion cross sections for $^{40}$Ca+$^{90,96}$Zr have been reproduced remarkably well without introducing any new parameters. The fusion cross sections for the neutron-rich fusion reactions of $^{48}$Ca+$^{90,96}$Zr around the Coulomb barrier are predicted to be enhanced compared with a non-…
A hybrid model where the tunneling probability is estimated based on both sudden and adiabatic approaches has been proposed to understand the heavy ion fusion phenomena at deep sub-barrier energies. It is shown that under certain approximations, it amounts to tunneling through two barriers: one while overcoming the normal Coulomb barrier (which is of sudden nature) along the radial direction until the repulsive core is reached and thereafter through an adiabatic barrier along the neck degree of freedom while making transition from a di-nuclear to a mono-nuclear regime through shape relaxation.…
We discuss the effects of coupling of the relative motion to nuclear collective excitations which have a finite lifetime on heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier. Both spreading and escape widths are explicitly taken into account in the exit doorway model. The coupled-channels equations are numerically solved to show that the finite resonance width always hinders fusion cross sections at subbarrier energies irrespective of the relative importance between the spreading and the escape widths. We also show that the structure of fusion barrier distribution is sm…
The classical trajectory model with stochastic breakup for nuclear collision dynamics of weakly-bound nuclei is further developed. It allows a quantitative study of the importance of incomplete fusion dynamics in the angular distribution of direct alpha-production. Model calculations indicate that the incomplete fusion contribution diminishes with decreasing energy towards the Coulomb barrier, notably separating in angles from the contribution of no-capture breakup events. This should facilitate the experimental disentanglement of these competing reaction processes.
The fusion dynamic mechanism of heavy-ions at energies near the Coulomb barrier is complicated and still not very clear up to now. Accordingly, a self-consistent method based on the CCFULL calculations has been developed and applied for an ingoing study of the effect of the positive Q-value neutron transfer (PQNT) channels in this work. The typical experimental fusion data of Ca + Ca and Ni + Ni is analyzed within the unified calculation scheme. The PQNT effect in near-barrier fusion is further confirmed based on the self-consistent analysis and extracted quantitatively.
The set of parameters for alpha-nucleus potential is derived by using the data for both the alpha-decay half-lives and the fusion cross-sections around the barrier for reactions alpha+40Ca, alpha+59Co, alpha+208Pb. The alpha-decay half-lives are obtained in the framework of a cluster model using the WKB approximation. The evaluated alpha-decay half-lives and the fusion cross-sections agreed well with the data. Fusion reactions between alpha-particle and heavy nuclei can be used for both the formation of very heavy nuclei and spectroscopic studies of the formed compound nuclei.
In this work, we introduce a new method to reduce the microscopic mean-field theory to a classical macroscopic dynamics during the initial stage of fusion reactions. We show that TDHF (Time-dependent Hartree-Fock) could be a useful tool to gain information on fusion barriers as well as on one-body dissipation effects. We apply the mean-field theory to the case of head-on reaction between $^{16}$O and $^{16,22,24,28}$O in order to quantify the effect of neutron skin on fusion. We show that the determination of fusion barrier requires, in addition to a precise knowledge of the relative distance …
Based on the adiabatic picture for heavy-ion reactions, in which the neck formation in the one-body system is taken into account, we propose a two-step model for fusion cross sections at deep subbarrier energies. This model consists of the capture process in the two-body potential pocket, which is followed by the penetration of the adiabatic one-body potential to reach a compound state after the touching configuration. We describe the former process with the coupled-channels framework, while the latter with the WKB approximation by taking into account the coordinate dependent inertia mass. The…
Classical mechanics and Time Dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) calculations of heavy ions collisions are performed to study the rotation of a deformed nucleus in the Coulomb field of its partner. This reorientation is shown to be independent on charges and relative energy of the partners. It only depends upon the deformations and inertias. TDHF calculations predict an increase by 30% of the induced rotation due to quantum effects while the nuclear contribution seems negligible. This reorientation modifies strongly the fusion cross-section around the barrier for light deformed nuclei on heavy colli…
We obtain the nuclear proximity potential by using semiclassical extended Thomas Fermi (ETF) approach in Skyrme energy density formalism (SEDF), and use it in the extended $\ell$-summed Wong formula under frozen density approximation. This method has the advantage of allowing the use of different Skyrme forces, giving different barriers. Thus, for a given reaction, we could choose a Skyrme force with proper barrier characteristics, not-requiring extra ``barrier lowering" or ``barrier narrowing" for a best fit to data. For the $^{64}$Ni+$^{100}$Mo reaction, the $\ell$-summed Wong formula, with …
Couplings between relative motion and internal structures are known to affect fusion barriers by dynamically modifying the densities of the colliding nuclei. The effect is expected to be stronger at energies near the barrier top, where changes in density have longer time to develop than at higher energies. Quantitatively, modern TDHF calculations are able to predict realistic fusion thresholds. However, the evolution of the potential barrier with bombarding energy remains to be confronted with the experimental data. The aim is to find signatures of the energy dependence of the barrier by compa…
The nuclear deformation and neutron-transfer process have been identified as playing a major role in the magnitude of the sub-barrier fusion (capture) cross sections. There are a several experimental evidences which confirm the importance of nuclear deformation on the fusion. The influence of nuclear deformation is straightforward. If the target nucleus is prolate in the ground state, the Coulomb field on its tips is lower than on its sides, that then increases the capture or fusion probability at energies below the barrier corresponding to the spherical nuclei. The role of neutron transfer re…
The Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model is further developed by introducing new parameters in interaction potential energy functional based on Skyrme interaction of SkM$^{*}$ and SLy series. The properties of ground states of selected nuclei can be reproduced very well. The Coulomb barriers for a series of reaction systems are studied and compared with the results of the proximity potential. The fusion excitation functions for a series of fusion reactions are calculated and the results are in good agreement with experimental data.
The effects of higher order coupling of surface vibrations to the relative motion on heavy-ion fusion reactions at near-barrier energies are investigated. The coupled channels equations are solved to all orders, and also in the linear and the quadratic coupling approximations. It is shown that the shape of fusion barrier distributions and the energy dependence of the average angular momentum of the compound nucleus can significantly change when the higher order couplings are included. The role of octupole vibrational excitation of ^{16}O in the ^{16}O + ^{144}Sm fusion reaction is also discuss…
We study theoretically fusion of the light proton-rich exotic nuclei $^{17}$F and $^8$B at near-barrier energies in order to investigate the possible role of breakup processes on their fusion cross sections. To this end, coupled channel calculations are performed considering the couplings to the breakup channels of these projectiles. In case of $^{17}$F, the coupling arising out of the inelastic excitation from the ground state to the bound excited state and its couplings to the continuum have also been taken into consideration. It is found that the inelastic excitation/breakup of $^{17}$F aff…
Fusion reactions relevant for the carbon and oxygen burning cycles in highly evolved stars are investigated in a standard approach to fusion. We employ the double folding method to evaluate the ion-ion interactions with Gogny-D1 and M3Y-Paris $n-n$ effective forces. The cross-section evaluation do not indicate a possible hindrance even at the lowest energies under the barrier. Reaction rates at temperatures relevant for the stellar processes are estimated and compared to the traditional and modern extrapolation formulas.
Based on an approach recently proposed by us, simultaneous $χ^{2}$-analyses are performed for elastic scattering, direct reaction (DR) and fusion cross sections data for the $^{6}$He+$^{209}$Bi system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies to determine the parameters of the polarization potential consisting of DR and fusion parts. We show that the data are well reproduced by the resultant potential, which also satisfies the proper dispersion relation. A discussion is given of the nature of the threshold anomaly seen in the potential.
An approach is proposed to calculate the direct reaction (DR) and fusion probabilities for heavy ion collisions at near-Coulomb-barrier energies as functions of the distance of closest approach D within the framework of the optical model that introduces two types of imaginary potentials, DR and fusion. The probabilities are calculated by using partial DR and fusion cross sections, together with the classical relations associated with the Coulomb trajectory. Such an approach makes it possible to analyze the data for angular distributions of the inclusive DR cross section, facilitating the deter…
The breakup of the $^{9}$Be projectile on the $^{209}$Bi target at bombarding energies above and near the Coulomb barrier is studied in the adiabatic two-center shell model approach. The effect of $^{9}$Be$% \to $n$+2α$ breakup channel on complete fusion, elastic and inelastic cross sections is investigated. Results show that the breakup of the projectile $^{9}$Be could be due to a molecular single-particle effect shortly before the colliding nuclei reach the Coulomb barrier.
We study fusion reactions of $^{16}$O with $^{154}$Sm, $^{186}$W and $^{238}$U at sub-barrier energies by a coupled-channels framework. We focus especially on the effects of $β_{6}$ deformation and low-lying vibrational excitations of the target nucleus. It is shown that the inclusion of $β_{6}$ deformation leads to a considerable improvement of the fit to the experimental data for all of these reactions. For the $^{154}$Sm and $^{238}$U targets, the octupole vibration significantly affects the fusion barrier distribution. The effect of $β$ band is negligible in all the three reactions, while …
We perform a study of $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O fusion at above and below the interaction barrier energies using three-dimensional time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) calculations at above barrier energies and density-constrained TDHF calculations for the entire energy range. We discuss the variations of the experimental data at above the barrier energies. Calculations reasonably reproduce the observed energy-dependent broad oscillations in the fusion excitation functions. These oscillations result from overcoming $L$-dependent fusion barriers. The role of the coupling to low-lying octupole states is a…
The sub-barrier capture (fusion) reactions $^{32}$S+$^{90,94,96}$Zr, $^{36}$S+$^{90,96}$Zr, $^{40}$Ca+$^{90,94,96}$Zr, and $^{48}$Ca+$^{90,96}$Zr with positive and negative $Q$-values for neutron transfer are studied within the quantum diffusion approach and the universal fusion function representation. For these systems, the s-wave capture probabilities are extracted from the experimental excitation functions and are also analyzed. Different effects of the positive $Q_{xn}$-value neutron transfer in the fusion enhancement are revealed in the relatively close reactions $^{32}$S+$^{94,96}$Zr an…
The vast knowledge of strong influence of quadrupole deformation $β_2$ of colliding nuclei on heavy-ion subbarrier fusion reactions inspires a desire to quest the sensitivity of fusion dynamics to higher order deformations, such as $β_4$ and $β_6$ deformations. However, such studies have rarely been carried out, especially for deformation of projectile nuclei. In this article, we investigated the role of $β_4$ of the projectile nucleus in fusion of the $^{28}$Si + $^{92}$Zr system. We demonstrated that the fusion barrier distribution is sensitive to the sign and the value of the $β_4$ paramete…
Background: The nuclear interaction potential and hence the fusion barrier formed between the interacting nuclei are the keys to understanding the complex fusion process dynamics. Purpose: This work intends to explore the fusion barrier characteristics of different target-projectile combinations within the relativistic mean-field (RMF) formalism. Methods: The density distributions of interacting nuclei and the microscopic R3Y NN interaction are obtained from relativistic mean-field (RMF) formalism for non-linear NL1, NL3, TM1, and relativistic-Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) approach for DDME2 parame…
For a single potential barrier, the barrier penetrability can be inverted based on the WKB approximation to yield the barrier thickness. We apply this method to heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies well below the Coulomb barrier and directly determine the inter-nucleus potential between the colliding nuclei. To this end, we assume that fusion cross sections at deep subbarrier energies are governed by the lowest barrier in the barrier distribution. The inverted inter-nucleus potentials for the $^{16}$O +$^{144}$Sm and $^{16}$O +$^{208}$Pb reactions show that they are much thicker than phenome…
The cross sections for the deep sub-barrier fusion reaction of light nuclei are calculated within the theoretical framework of the selective resonant tunneling model. In this model, assumption of a complex square-well nuclear potential is invoked to describe the absorption inside the nuclear well. The theoretical estimates for these cross sections agree well with the experimentally measured values. The features of the astrophysical S-factor are derived in terms of this model. Present formalism appears to be particularly useful for the low energy resonant reactions between two charged nuclei.
We demonstrate that when two colliding nuclei approach each other, their quantum vibrations are damped near the touching point. We show that this damping is responsible for the fusion hindrance phenomena measured in the deep sub-barrier fusion reactions. To show those, we for the first time apply the random-phase-approximation (RPA) method to the two-body $^{16}$O + $^{16}$O and $^{40}$Ca + $^{40}$Ca systems. We calculate the octupole transition strengths for the two nuclei adiabatically approaching each other. The calculated transition strength drastically decreases near the touching point, s…
Fusion reactions of heavy ions are investigated by employing a simple stochastic semi-classical model which includes the coupling between relative motion and low frequency collective surface modes of colliding ions similarly to the quantal coupled-channels description. The quantal effect enters into the calculation through the initial zero-point fluctuations of the surface vibrations. Good agreement with the result of coupled-channels calculations as well as data is obtained for the fusion cross sections of nickel isotopes. The internal excitations in non-fusing events as well as the fusion ti…
We introduce a new microscopic approach to calculate the dependence of fusion barriers and cross-sections on isospin dynamics. The method is based on the time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory and the isoscalar and isovector properties of the energy density functional (EDF). The contribution to the fusion barriers originating from the isoscalar and isovector parts of the EDF is calculated. It is shown that for non-symmetric systems the isovector dynamics influence the sub-barrier fusion cross-sections. For most systems this results in an enhancement of the sub-barrier cross-sections, while for oth…
Eigen-channel approach to heavy-ion fusion reactions is exact only when the excitation energy of the intrinsic motion is zero. In order to take into account effects of finite excitation energy, we introduce an energy dependence to weight factors in the eigen-channel approximation. Using two channel problem, we show that the weight factors are slowly changing functions of incident energy. This suggests that the concept of the fusion barrier distribution still holds to a good approximation even when the excitation energy of the intrinsic motion is finite. A transition to the adiabatic tunneling,…
We demonstrate that the cross sections derived from the "shadow model" for reactions between light nuclei disagree with low-energy laboratory data and exhibit unphysical behavior at energies below those for which data exist. As a consequence, the large thermonuclear reaction rates obtained by Scalia and Figuera [Phys. Rev. C46, 2610 (1992)] are wrong.
Adiabatic fusion potentials, extended well into compound nucleus region, are calculated for a number of reactions within the static Hartree-Fock method with the Skyrme SkM* interaction. The calculated fusion barriers agree quite well with the data, in spite of considerable errors in reaction Q values. This suggests some error cancellation, possibly with the relative kinetic energy term. Calculated berrier heights are consistent with the idea of fusion hindrance in tip collisions. Adiabatic potentials differ considerably from the results of the frozen density approximation. We briefly discuss r…
Based on the extended optical model approach in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts, simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses are performed for elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{6}$Li+$^{208}$Pb system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies. A folding potential is used as the bare potential. It is found that the real part of the resultant DR part of the polarization potential is repulsive, which is consistent with the results from the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) calculations and the normalization factors needed for…
We have constructed an empirical formulae for the fusion and interaction barriers using experimental values available till date. The fusion barriers so obtained have been compared with different model predictions based on the proximity, Woods-Saxon and double folding potentials along with several empirical formulas, time dependent Hartree-Fock theories, and the experimental results. The comparison allows us to find the best model, which is nothing but the present empirical formula only. Most remarkably, the fusion barrier and radius show excellent consonance with the experimental findings for …
We extend a recent study that explained the steep falloff in the fusion cross section at energies far below the Coulomb barrier for the symmetric dinuclear system 64Ni+64Ni to another symmetric system, 58Ni+58Ni, and the asymmetric system 64Ni+100Mo. In this scheme the very sensitive dependence of the internal part of the nuclear potential on the nuclear equation of state determines a reduction of the classically allowed region for overlapping configurations and consequently a decrease in the fusion cross sections at bombarding energies far below the barrier. Within the coupled-channels method…
Systematic calculations of the Coulomb barrier parameters for collisions of spherical nuclei are performed within the framework of the double folding approach. The value of the parameter $B_Z=Z_PZ_T/(A^{1/3}_P+(A^{1/3}_P)$ (which estimates the Coulomb barrier height) varies in these calculations from 10 MeV up to 150 MeV. The nuclear densities came from the Hartree-Fock calculations which reproduce the experimental charge densities with good accuracy. For the nucleon-nucleon effective interaction two analytical approximations known in the literature are used: the M3Y and Migdal forces. The cal…
The role of higher order coupling of surface vibrations to the relative motion in heavy-ion fusion reactions at near-barrier energies is investigated. The coupled channels equations are solved to all orders, and also in the linear and the quadratic coupling approximations. Taking $^{64}$Ni + $^{92,96}$Zr reactions as examples, it is shown that all order couplings lead to considerably improved agreement with the experimentally measured fusion cross sections and average angular momenta of the compound nucleus for such heavy nearly symmetric systems. The importance of higher order coupling is als…
