Gravitational lenses on galaxy scales are plausibly modelled as having ellipsoidal symmetry and a universal dark matter density profile, with a Sersic profile to describe the distribution of baryonic matter. Predicting all lensing effects requires knowledge of the total lens potential: in this work we give analytic forms for that of the above hybrid model. Emphasising that complex lens potentials can be constructed from simpler components in linear combination, we provide a recipe for attaining elliptical symmetry in either projected mass or lens potential. We also provide analytic formulae for the lens potentials of Sersic profiles for integer and half-integer index. We then present formulae describing the gravitational lensing effects due to smoothly-truncated universal density profiles in cold dark matter model. For our isolated haloes the density profile falls off as radius to the minus fifth or seventh power beyond the tidal radius, functional forms that allow all orders of lens potential derivatives to be calculated analytically, while ensuring a non-divergent total mass. We show how the observables predicted by this profile differ from that of the original infinite-mass NFW profile. Expressions for the gravitational flexion are highlighted. We show how decreasing the tidal radius allows stripped haloes to be modelled, providing a framework for a fuller investigation of dark matter substructure in galaxies and clusters. Finally we remark on the need for finite mass halo profiles when doing cosmological ray-tracing simulations, and the need for readily-calculable higher order derivatives of the lens potential when studying catastrophes in strong lenses.
The statistics of gravitationally lensed arcs was recognised earlier as a potentially powerful cosmological probe. However, while fully numerical models find orders of magnitude difference between the arc probabilities in different cosmological models, analytic models tend to find markedly different results. We introduce in this paper an analytic cluster lens model which improves upon existing analytic models in four ways. (1) We use the more realistic Navarro-Frenk-White profile instead of singular isothermal spheres, (2) we include the effect of cosmology on the compactness of the lenses, (3…
We derive an analytic expression for the mean magnification due to strong gravitational lensing, using a simple lens model, a singular isothermal sphere embedded in an external shear field. We compute separate expressions for 2-image and 4-image lensing. For 4-image lensing, the mean magnification takes a particularly simple form: <mu>_4 = 3.6/(gamma*(1-gamma^2)), where gamma is the external shear. We compare our analytic results to a numerical evaluation of the full magnification distribution. The results can be used to understand the magnification bias that favors the discovery of four-image…
While the Hubble constant can be derived from observable time delays between images of lensed quasars, the result is often highly sensitive to assumptions and systematic uncertainties in the lensing model. Unlike most previous authors we explore a broad class of models with non-parametric lens radial profile and allow for non-elliptical lens potentials. The axis ratio and position angle of the lens can be determined from the image positions of quadruple gravitational lensed systems by solving the lens equation semi-analytically, independent of the radial profile. We give simple equations for e…
The magnifications of the images in a strong gravitational lens system are sensitive to small mass clumps in the lens potential; this effect has been used to infer the amount of substructure in galaxy dark matter halos. I study the theory of substructure lensing to identify important general features, and to compute analytic cross sections that will facilitate further theoretical studies. I show that the problem of a clump anywhere along the line of sight to a lens can be mapped onto an equivalent problem of a clump in a simple convergence and shear field; clumps at arbitrary redshifts are the…
We study gravitational lens time delays for a general family of lensing potentials, which includes the popular singular isothermal elliptical potential and singular isothermal elliptical density distribution but allows general angular structure. Using a novel approach, we show that the time delay can be cast in a very simple form, depending only on the observed image positions. Including an external shear changes the time delay proportional to the shear strength, and varying the radial profile of the potential changes the time delay approximately linearly. These analytic results can be used to…
We present observations of CLASS B2108+213, the widest separation gravitational lens system discovered by the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey. Radio imaging using the VLA at 8.46 GHz and MERLIN at 5 GHz shows two compact components separated by 4.56 arcsec with a faint third component in between which we believe is emission from a lensing galaxy. 5-GHz VLBA observations reveal milliarcsecond-scale structure in the two lensed images that is consistent with gravitational lensing. Optical emission from the two lensed images and two lensing galaxies within the Einstein radius is detected in Hubble Spac…
Clusters of galaxies offer a robust test bed for probing the nature of dark matter that is insensitive to the assumption of the gravity theories. Both Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) and General Relativity (GR) would require similar amounts of non-baryonic matter in clusters as MOND boosts the gravity only mildly on cluster scales. Gravitational lensing allows us to estimate the enclosed mass in clusters on small (20 - 50 kpc) and large (several 100 kpc) scales independent of the assumptions of equilibrium. Here we show for the first time that a combination of strong and weak gravitational …
We report that the Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar SDSS J165043.44+425149.3 is gravitationally lensed into two images, based on observations obtained with the WIYN 3.5 m telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory. The lensed quasar, at a redshift of z=1.54, appears as two images separated by 1.2" with B-band magnitudes of 17.8 and 20.0. The lensing galaxy is clearly detected in I-band images obtained in 0.3" seeing, after point spread function subtraction of the two quasar images. A strong metal-line absorption system is also identified in the unresolved SDSS spectrum of the double quasar…
The existence of a dark energy component has usually been invoked as the most plausible way to explain the recent observational results. However, it is also well known that effects arising from new physics (e.g., extra dimensions) can mimic the gravitational effects of a dark energy through a modification of the Friedmann equation. In this paper we investigate some observational consequences of a flat, matter dominated and accelerating/decelerating scenario in which this modification is given by $H^{2} = g(ρ_m, n, q)$ where $g(ρ_m, n, q)$ is a new function of the energy density $ρ_m$, the so-c…
(abridged) We study the accuracy of various approximations to cosmic shear and weak galaxy-galaxy lensing and investigate effects of Born corrections and lens-lens coupling. We use ray-tracing through the Millennium Simulation to calculate various cosmic-shear and galaxy-galaxy-lensing statistics. We compare the results from ray-tracing to semi-analytic predictions. We find: (i) The linear approximation provides an excellent fit to cosmic-shear power spectra as long as the actual matter power spectrum is used as input. Common fitting formulae, however, strongly underestimate the cosmic-shear p…
When a microlensing light curve is contaminated by blended light from unresolved stars near the line of sight to the lensed star, the light curve shape and corresponding parameterization for the event will differ from the values expected when the event is not affected by blending. As a result, blending makes it difficult to identify the major lens population and to estimate the amount of lensing matter. In order to estimate the effect of blending on the result of lensing experiments, it is, therefore, essential to know how the observed lensing parameters change depending on the fraction of ble…
We present five candidate gravitational lenses discovered spectroscopically in the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (CNOC2), along with one found in followup observations. Each has a secure redshift based on several features, plus a discrepant emission line which does not match any known or plausible feature and is visible in multiple direct spectral images. We identify these lines as Lyman-alpha or [OII] emission from galaxies lensed by, or projected onto, the CNOC2 target galaxies. Einstein radii estimated from the candidate deflector galaxy luminosit…
We report the detection of anomalous brightness fluctuations in the multiple image Q0957+561 A,B gravitational lens system, and consider whether such anomalies have a plausible interpretation within the framework of cosmic string theory. We study a simple model of gravitational lensing by an asymmetrical rotating string. An explicit form of the lens equation is obtained and approximate relations for magnification are derived. We show that such a model with typical parameters of the GUT string can quantitatively reproduce the observed pattern of brightness fluctuations. On the other hand, expla…
The correlation between source galaxies and lensing potentials causes a systematic effect on measurements of cosmic shear statistics, known as the source-lens clustering (SLC) effect. The SLC effect on the skewness of lensing convergence, $S_3$, is examined using a nonlinear semi-analytic approach and is checked against numerical simulations. The semi-analytic calculations have been performed in a wide variety of generic models for the redshift distribution of source galaxies and power-law models for the bias parameter between the galaxy and dark matter distributions. The semi-analytic predict…
We study gravitational lensing with a multiple lens plane approach, proposing a simple analytical model for the probability distribution function (PDF) of the dark matter convergence, kappa, for the different lens planes in a given cosmology as a function of redshift and smoothing angle, theta. The model is fixed solely by the variance of kappa, which in turn is fixed by the amplitude of the power spectrum, sigma_8. We test the PDF against a high resolution Tree-Particle-Mesh simulation and find that it is far superior to the Gaussian or the lognormal, especially for small values of theta << 1…

We describe a new, non-parametric, method for reconstructing lensing mass distributions in multiple-image systems, and apply it to PG1115, for which time delays have recently been measured. It turns out that the image positions and the ratio of time delays between different pairs of images constrain the mass distribution in a linear fashion. Since observational errors on image positions and time delay ratios are constantly improving, we use these data as a rigid constraint in our modelling. In addition, we require the projected mass distributions to be inversion-symmetric and to have inward-po…
We introduce analytical expressions for a pseudo fully analytical elliptical projected Navarro, Frenk & White (NFW) mass profile to be used in lensing equations. We propose a formalism that incorporates the ellipticity into the expression for the lens potential, producing a pseudo-elliptical mass distribution. This approach can be implemented to any circular mass profile for which the projected mass profile Sigma(r) and the deflection angle profile alpha(r) both have analytical expressions; however the potential does not necessarily need to take an analytical form. We apply this new formalism …
Non-linear evolution of density fluctuations yields secondary anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), which are correlated with the same density fluctuations that can be measured by weak lensing (WL) surveys. We study the CMB-WL correlation using analytical models as well as $N$-body simulations. We show that an analytical model based upon the time derivative of non-linear matter power spectrum agrees with simulations. All-sky cosmic-variance limited CMB and WL surveys allow us to measure the correlation from non-linearity with high significance ($50σ$) for $l_{\rm max}=10^4$, w…
For the quadruple gravitational lens PG 1115+080, we combine recent measurements of the time delays with new lens models to determine the Hubble constant H_0. We explore the effects of systematic uncertainties in the lens models on the estimates of H_0, and we discuss how the uncertainties can be reduced by future observations. We find that the lens cannot be fit by an isolated lens galaxy, but that it can be well fit by including a perturbation from the nearby group of galaxies. To understand the full range of systematic uncertainties it is crucial to use an ellipsoidal galaxy and to let the …
We analyze a new gravitational lens, OAC-GL J1223-1239, serendipitously found in a deep I-band image of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). The lens is a L_*, edge-on S0 galaxy at z=0.4656. The gravitational arc has a radius of 0.42 arcsec. We have determined the total mass and the dark matter (DM) fraction within the Einstein radius as a function of the lensed source redshift, which is presently unknown. For z ~ 1.3, which is in the middle of the redshift range plausible for the source according to some external constraints, we find the central velocity dispers…
The central mass distribution of clusters of galaxies can be inferred from gravitationally lensed arcs with known redshifts. For the Abell cluster 2218, this method yields a core mass which is larger by a factor of $2.5 \pm 0.5$ than the value deduced from X-ray observations, under the assumptions that the gas is supported by thermal pressure and that the cluster is spherical. We show that a non-thermal pressure support is the most plausible explanation for this discrepancy. Such a pressure can be naturally provided by strong turbulence and equipartition magnetic fields ($\sim 50μ$G) that are …
The statistics of gravitationally lensed arcs, which can be used for a variety of cosmological tests, are sensitive to the intrinsic shapes of the source galaxies. I present an analytic formalism that makes it simple to include elliptical sources in analytic calculations of lens statistics. For cuspy lens models, sources with an axis ratio of 2:1 enhance the total number of arcs longer than 10:1 by a factor of order two, while modestly decreasing the number ratio of radial arcs to tangential arcs. Source ellipticity is therefore an important systematic effect in detailed quantitative studies, …
We present explicit expressions for the lens equation for a cored isothermal ellipsoidal gravitational lens as a single real sixth-order algebraic equation in two approaches; 2-dimensional Cartesian coordinates and 3-dimensional polar ones. We find a condition for physical solutions which correspond to at most five images. For a singular isothermal ellipsoid, the sixth-order equation is reduced to fourth-order one for which analytic solutions are well-known. Furthermore, we derive analytic criteria for determining the number of images for the singular lens, which give us simple expressions for…
We test possible lensing scenarios of the JVAS system B2114+022, in which two galaxies at different redshifts (``G1'' at $z_1 = 0.3157$ and ``G2'' at $z_2 = 0.5883$) are found within 2 arcseconds of quadruple radio sources. For our investigation, we use possible lensing constraints derived from a wealth of data on the radio sources obtained with VLA, MERLIN, VLBA and EVN as well as HST imaging data on the two galaxies, which are presented in Augusto et al. In the present study, we focus on reproducing the widest separated, observationally similar radio components A and D as lensed images. We f…
We predict the fraction of dark halo lenses, that is, the fraction of lens systems produced by the gravitational potential of dark halos, on the basis of a simple parametric model of baryonic compression. The fraction of dark halo lenses primarily contains information on the effect of baryonic compression and the density profile of dark halos, and is expected to be insensitive to cosmological parameters and source population. The model we adopt comprises the galaxy formation probability p_g(M) which describes the global efficiency of baryonic compression and the ratio of circular velocities of…
The lensed double QSO 0957+561 has a well-measured time delay and hence is useful for a global determination of H0. Uncertainty in the mass distribution of the lens is the largest source of uncertainty in the derived H0. We investigate the range of \hn produced by a set of lens models intended to mimic the full range of astrophysically plausible mass distributions, using as constraints the numerous multiply-imaged sources which have been detected. We obtain the first adequate fit to all the observations, but only if we include effects from the galaxy cluster beyond a constant local magnificati…
We use the semi-analytical approach to analyze gravitational lensing of quasars by dark halos in various cold dark matter (CDM) cosmologies, in order to determine the sensitivity of the prediction probabilities of images separations to the input assumptions regarding halos and cosmologies. The mass function of dark halos is assumed to be given by the Press-Schechter function. The mass density profile of dark halos is alternatively taken to be the singular isothermal sphere (SIS), the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile, or the generalized NFW profile. The cosmologies include: the Einstein-de Sit…
In this paper we present an analytical treatment of gravitational lensing by Kerr black holes in the limit of very large deflection angles, restricting to observers in the equatorial plane. We accomplish our objective starting from the Schwarzschild black hole and adding corrections up to second order in the black hole spin. This is sufficient to provide a full description of all caustics and the inversion of lens mapping for sources near them. On the basis of these formulae we argue that relativistic images of Low Mass X-ray Binaries around Sgr A* are very likely to be seen by future X-ray in…
We study the effect of the core radius of an isothermal ellipsoidal gravitational lens on the caustics and the critical curves. We derive an analytic expression of the caustics for an isothermal ellipsoidal gravitational lens via a sixth-order algebraic equation. Since the expression is too long, by using another method we obtain a parametric representation of the critical curves in order to show analytically that there exist three cases: There are two curves for a small core radius, one for a quite large one, and no curves appear for an extremely large one, though the latter two cases are not…
Quadruple gravitational lens systems offer the possibility of measuring time delays for image pairs, microlensing effects, and extinction in distant galaxies. Observations of these systems may be used to obtain estimates of H_o and to study the various mass components of lens galaxies at high redshifts. With HST, we have observed the reddest known gravitational lens system, MG 0414+0534. We used WFPC2/PC1 to obtain deep, high-resolution images with two filters, F675W and F814W. We present a detailed analysis of all of the components, as well as macrolens models. Our main results are: (1) confi…
We present an analytical formulation of gravitational lensing using familiar triaxial power-law mass distributions, where the 3-dimensional mass density is given by $ρ(X,Y,Z) = ρ_0 [1 + (\frac{X}{a})^2 + (\frac{Y}{b})^2 + (\frac{Z}{c})^2]^{-ν/2}$. The deflection angle and magnification factor are obtained analytically as Fourier series. We give the exact expressions for the deflection angle and magnification factor. The formulae for the deflection angle and magnification factor given in this paper will be useful for numerical studies of observed lens systems. An application of our results to t…
We use semi-analytic models of galaxy formation combined with high resolution N-body simulations to make predictions for galaxy-dark matter correlations and apply them to galaxy-galaxy lensing. We analyze cross-correlation spectra between the dark matter and different galaxy samples selected by luminosity, color or star formation rate. We compare the predictions to the recent detection by SDSS. We show that the correlation amplitude and the mean tangential shear depend strongly on the luminosity of the sample on scales below 1 Mpc, reflecting the correlation between the galaxy luminosity and t…
Gravitational lensing provides a unique and powerful probe of the mass distributions of distant galaxies. Four-image lens systems with fold and cusp configurations have two or three bright images near a critical point. Within the framework of singularity theory, we derive analytic relations that are satisfied for a light source that lies a small but finite distance from the astroid caustic of a four-image lens. Using a perturbative expansion of the image positions, we show that the time delay between the close pair of images in a fold lens scales with the cube of the image separation, with a c…
Various astronomical observations have been consistently making a strong case for the existence of a component of dark energy with negative pressure in the universe. It is now necessary to take the dark energy component(s) into account in gravitational lensing statistics and other cosmological tests. By using the comoving distance we derive analytic but simple expressions for the optical depth of multiple image, the expected value of image separation and the probability distribution of image separation caused by an assemble of singular isothermal spheres in general FRW cosmological models with…
