The goal of this study is to determine a distance to Westerlund 1 independent of the characteristics of the stellar population and to study its neutral environment, using observations of atomic hydrogen. The HI observations are taken from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey to study HI absorption in the direction of the HII region created by the members of Westerlund 1 and to investigate its environment as observed in the HI line emission. A Galactic rotation curve was derived using the recently revised values for the Galactic centre distance of $R_\odot = 7.6$ kpc, and the velocity of the Sun around the Galactic centre of $Θ_\odot = 214$ km s$^{-1}$. The newly determined rotation model leads us to derive a distance of $3.9\pm 0.7$ kpc to Westerlund 1, consistent with a location in the Scutum-Crux Arm. Included in this estimate is a very careful investigation of possible sources of error for the Galactic rotation curve. We also report on small expanding HI features around the cluster with a maximum dynamic age of 600,000 years and a larger bubble which has a minimum dynamic age of 2.5 million years. Additionally we re-calculated the kinematic distances to nearby HII regions and supernova remnants based on our new Galaxic rotation curve. We propose that in the early stages of the development of Wd 1 a large interstellar bubble of diameter about 50 pc was created by the cluster members. This bubble has a dynamic age similar to the age of the cluster. Small expanding bubbles, with dynamical ages $\sim 0.6$ Myr are found around Wd 1, which we suggest consist of recombined material lost by cluster members through their winds.
The results from H.E.S.S. observations towards Westerlund 2 are presented. The detection of very-high-energy gamma-ray emission towards the young stellar cluster Westerlund 2 in the HII complex RCW49 by H.E.S.S. provides ample evidence that particle acceleration to extreme energies is associated with this region. A variety of possible emission scenarios is mentioned, ranging from high-energy gamma-ray production in the colliding wind zone of the massive Wolf-Rayet binary WR20a, collective wind scenarios, diffusive shock acceleration at the boundaries of wind-blown bubbles in the stellar cluste…
High-dynamic range radio observations of Westerlund 1 are presented that detect a total of 21 stars in the young massive stellar cluster, the richest population of radio emitting stars known for any young massive galactic cluster in the Galaxy. We will discuss some of the more remarkable objects, including the highly radio luminous supergiant B[e] star W9, with an estimated mass-loss rate ~10^{-3} solarmass/yr, comparable to that of eta Carina, along with the somewhat unusual detection of thermal emission from almost all the cool red supergiants and yellow hypergiants. There is strong supporti…
Results from gamma-ray observations by the H.E.S.S. telescope array in the direction of the young stellar cluster Westerlund 2 are presented. Stereoscopic imaging of Cherenkov light emission of gamma-ray induced showers in the atmosphere is used to study the celestial region around the massive Wolf-Rayet (WR) binary WR 20a. Spectral and positional analysis is performed using standard event reconstruction techniques and parameter cuts. The detection of a new gamma-ray source is reported from H.E.S.S. observations in 2006. HESS J1023-575 is found to be coincident with the young stellar cluster W…
The H.E.S.S. collaboration recently reported the discovery of VHE gamma-ray emission coincident with the young stellar cluster Westerlund 2. This system is known to host a population of hot, massive stars, and, most particularly, the WR binary WR20a. Particle acceleration to TeV energies in Westerlund 2 can be accomplished in several alternative scenarios, therefore we only discuss energetic constraints based on the total available kinetic energy in the system, the actual mass loss rates of respective cluster members, and implied gamma-ray production from processes such as inverse Compton scat…
We have analysed near-infrared NTT/SofI observations of the starburst cluster Westerlund 1, which is among the most massive young clusters in the Milky Way. A comparison of colour-magnitude diagrams with theoretical main-sequence and pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks yields improved extinction and distance estimates of A_Ks = 1.13+-0.03 mag and d = 3.55+-0.17 kpc (DM = 12.75+-0.10 mag). The pre-main sequence population is best fit by a Palla & Stahler isochrone for an age of 3.2 Myr, while the main sequence population is in agreement with a cluster age of 3 to 5 Myr. An analysis of the str…
Because of their large number of stars spread over the entire stellar mass spectrum, starburst clusters are highly suitable to benchmark and calibrate star formation models and theories. Among the handful of Galactic starburst clusters, Westerlund 1 with its estimated 150 O-stars, W-R stars, supergiants and hypergiants is the most massive young cluster identified to date in the Milky Way. While previous studies of Westerlund 1 focused largely on optical and X-ray observations of its evolved massive stellar population, we have analyzed near-infrared data, resulting in the first in depth study o…
TeV gamma-rays can result from the photo-de-excitation of PeV cosmic ray nuclei after their parents have undergone photo-disintegration in an environment of ultraviolet photons. This process is proposed as a candidate explanation of the recently discovered HESS source at the edge of Westerlund 2. The UV background is provided by Lyman-alpha emission within the rich O and B stellar environment. The HESS flux results if there is efficient acceleration at the source of lower energy nuclei. The requirement that the Lorentz-boosted ultraviolet photons reach the Giant Dipole resonant energy (~ 20 Me…
The extended TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1023-575 is coincident with the massive, young stellar cluster Westerlund 2 (Wd2) and its surrounding HII region RCW 49. On the basis of an analysis of the CO emission and 21 cm absorption along the line of sight to Wd2, it is argued that this cluster, and by assumption the TeV source as well, must be associated with a giant molecular cloud in the far side of the Carina arm with a mass of 7.5 x 10^5 Mo. Analysis of the spatial and velocity structure of the cloud reveals clear evidence of interaction with Wd2. The cloud's kinematic distance of 6.0 +/- 1.0…
We present new spectroscopic and photometric observations of the young Galactic open cluster Westerlund 1 (Wd 1) that reveal a unique population of massive evolved stars. We identify ~200 cluster members and present spectroscopic classifications for ~25% of these. We find that all stars so classified are unambiguously post-Main Sequence objects, consistent with an apparent lack of an identifiable Main Sequence in our photometric data to V~20. We are able to identify rich populations of Wolf Rayet stars, OB supergiants and short lived transitional objects. Of these, the latter group consists of…
The Galactic open cluster Westerlund 1 (Wd 1) represents the ideal local template for extragalactic young massive star clusters, because it is currently the only nearby young cluster which reaches a mass of around 10^5 Msun. The proximity makes spatially resolved studies of its stellar population feasible, and additionally permits direct comparison of its properties with measurements of velocity dispersion and dynamical mass for spatially unresolved extragalactic clusters. Recently, we published the dynamical mass estimate based on spectra of four red supergiants. We have now identified six ad…
The Galactic open cluster Westerlund 1 was found only a few years ago to be much more massive than previously thought, with evidence suggesting its mass to be in excess of ~10^5 Msun, in the range spanned by young extragalactic star clusters. Unlike those clusters its proximity makes spatially resolved studies of its stellar population feasible. It is therefore the ultimate template for a young, massive star cluster, permitting direct comparison of its properties with measurements of velocity dispersion and dynamical mass for spatially unresolved extragalactic clusters. To this end, we used th…
We present the diffuse X-ray emission identified in Chandra observations of the young, massive Galactic star cluster Westerlund 1. After removing point-like X-ray sources down to a completeness limit of 2e31 erg/s, we identify 3e34 erg/s (2--8 keV) of diffuse emission. The spatial distribution of the emission can be described as a slightly-elliptical Lorentzian core with a half-width half-maximum along the major axis of 25+/-1", similar to the distribution of point sources in the cluster, plus a 5' halo of extended emission. The spectrum of the diffuse emission is dominated by a hard continuum…
The evolution leading to the formation of a neutron star in the very young Westerlund 1 star cluster is investigated. The turnoff mass has been estimated to be 35 Msun, indicating a cluster age ~ 3-5 Myr. The brightest X-ray source in the cluster, CXO J164710.2-455216, is a slowly spinning (10 s) single neutron star and potentially a magnetar. Since this source was argued to be a member of the cluster, the neutron star progenitor must have been very massive (M_zams > 40 Msun) as noted by Muno et al. (2006). Since such massive stars are generally believed to form black holes (rather than neutro…
We present the results of a high-resolution X-ray imaging study of the stellar population in the Galactic massive star-forming region RCW49 and its central OB association Westerlund 2. We obtained a 40 ks X-ray image of a 17'x17' field using the Chandra X-ray Observatory and deep NIR images using the Infrared Survey Facility in a concentric 8'3x8'3 region. We detected 468 X-ray sources and identified optical, NIR, and Spitzer Space Telescope MIR counterparts for 379 of them. The unprecedented spatial resolution and sensitivity of the X-ray image, enhanced by optical and infrared imaging data, …
Recently, we have proposed that the interaction between relativistic protons resulting from Fermi first order acceleration in the superbubble of a stellar OB association or in other nearby accelerator and ions residing in single stellar winds of massive stars could lead to TeV sources without strong counterparts at lower energies. Here we refine this analysis in several directions. We study collective wind configurations produced by a number of massive stars, and obtain densities and expansion velocities of the stellar wind gas that is to be target of hadronic interactions. We study the expect…
We present the serendipitous discovery of a young stellar cluster in the Galactic disk at l=12deg. Using Keck/NIRSPEC, we obtained high- and low-resolution spectroscopy of several stars in the cluster, and we identified one red supergiant and two blue supergiants. The radial velocity of the red supergiant provides a kinematic cluster distance of 4.7pm0.4 kpc, implying luminosities of the stars consistent with their spectral types. Together with the known Wolf-Rayet star located 2.4' from the cluster center, the presence of the red supergiant and the blue supergiants suggests a cluster age of 6…
Dark matter annihilation has been proposed to explain the TeV gamma rays observed from the Galactic Center. We study constraints on this hypothesis coming from the mass profile around the Galactic Center measured by observing stellar dynamics. We show that for current particle models, the constraints on the dark matter density profile from measurements of mass by infrared observations are comparable to the constraints from the measurements of the TeV source extension.
Absorption in the stellar Lyman-$α$ (Ly-$α$) line observed during the transit of the extrasolar planet HD 209458b reveals high velocity atomic hydrogen at great distances from the planet. This has been interpreted as hydrogen atoms escaping from the exosphere of the planet, possibly undergoing hydrodynamic blow-off, being accelerated by stellar radiation pressure. However, around solar system planets the production of energetic neutral atoms from charge exchange between solar wind protons and neutral hydrogen from the exospheres has been observed, and should also occur at extrasolar planets. H…
We have mapped the neutral atomic gas (HI) in the three disk-disk merger systems NGC 520, Arp 220, and Arp 299. These systems differ from the majority of the mergers mapped in HI, in that their stellar and gaseous tidal features do not coincide. In particular, they exhibit large stellar tidal features with little if any accompanying neutral gas and large gas-rich tidal features with little if any accompanying starlight. On smaller scales, there are striking anti-correlations where the gaseous and stellar tidal features appear to cross. We explore several possible causes for these differences, …
We perform one-zone simulations of the infall epoch of a pre-supernova stellar core in the presence of neutrino flavor changing scattering interactions. Our calculations give a self-consistent assessment of the relationship between flavor changing rates and the reduction in electron fraction and re-distribution of initial electron lepton number among the neutrino flavors. We discuss and include in our calculations sub-nuclear density medium corrections for flavor changing scattering coherence factors. We find that flavor changing couplings epsilon > 3x10^(-4) in either the electron neutrino - …
The diagnostic age versus mass-to-light ratio diagram is often used in attempts to constrain the shape of the stellar initial mass function (IMF), and the potential longevity of extragalactic young to intermediate-age massive star clusters. Here, we explore its potential for Galactic open clusters. On the basis of a small, homogenised cluster sample we provide useful constraints on the presence of significant binary fractions. Using the massive young Galactic cluster Westerlund 1 as a key example, we caution that stochasticity in the IMF introduces significant additional uncertainties. We conc…
We present a study of the stellar populations of a sample of 39 local, field early-type galaxies whose HI properties are known from interferometric data. Our aim is to understand whether stellar age and chemical composition depend on the HI content of galaxies. As a by-product of our analysis, we also study their ionised gas content and how it relates to the neutral hydrogen gas. Stellar populations and ionised gas are studied from optical long-slit spectra. We determine stellar age, metallicity and alpha-to-iron ratio by analysing a set of Lick/IDS line-strength indices measured from the spec…
Aims: To calculate transition rates from ground and excited states in neutral oxygen atoms due to electron collisions for non-LTE modelling of oxygen in late-type stellar atmospheres, thus enabling reliable interpretation of oxygen lines in stellar spectra. Methods: A 38-state R-matrix calculation in LS-coupling has been performed. Basis orbitals from the literature (Thomas et al.) are adopted, and a large set of configurations are included to obtain good representations of the target wavefunctions. Rate coefficients are calculated by averaging over a Maxwellian velocity distribution. Results:…
We calculate neutrino cross sections from neutral current reactions in dense matter containing hyperons. We show that Sigma- hyperons give significant contributions. To lowest order, the contributions from the neutral Lambda and Sigma0, which have zero hyper-charge, vanish. However, their presence furnishes baryon number which decreases the relative concentrations of nucleons. This leads to significant reductions in the cross sections. Due to the uncertainty in strong interactions at high density, the neutrino opacity may vary by a factor of about 2 depending on the behavior of the effective m…
Context: B[e] supergiants are known to have non-spherical winds, and the existence of disks that are neutral in hydrogen close to their stellar surface has been postulated. A suitable mechanism to produce non-spherical winds seems to be rapid rotation, and at least for three B[e] supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds rotation velocities at a substantial fraction of their critical velocity have been found. Aims: We want to find suitable recombination distances in the equatorial plane of rapidly rotating stars that explain the observed huge amounts of neutral material in the vicinity of B[e] supe…
Self-gravitating stellar disks with random motion support both exponentially growing and, in some cases, purely oscillatory axisymmetric bending modes, unlike their cold disk counterparts. A razor-thin disk with even a very small degree of random motion in the plane is both unstable and possesses a discrete spectrum of neutral modes, irrespective of the sharpness of the edge. Random motion normal to the disk plane has a stabilizing effect but at the same time allows bending waves to couple to the internal vibrations of the particles, which causes the formerly neutral modes to decay through Lan…
We assess what information HST observations of stellar Ly-alpha lines can provide on the heliosheath, the region of the heliosphere between the termination shock and heliopause. To search for evidence of heliosheath absorption, we conduct a systematic inspection of stellar Ly-alpha lines reconstructed after correcting for ISM absorption (and heliospheric/astrospheric absorption, if present). Most of the stellar lines are well centered on the stellar radial velocity, as expected, but the three lines of sight with the most downwind orientations relative to the ISM flow (Chi1 Ori, HD 28205, and H…
We present the results of a survey, the deepest to date, for HI emission at 21 cm and OH emission at 18 cm (lines at 1612, 1665, 1667 and 1720 MHz) in the direction towards the Galactic globular clusters M 15, M 2, NGC 6934, NGC 7006 and Pal 13. The aim is to measure the amount of hydrogen in the intra-cluster medium (ICM), and to find OH masers in the circumstellar envelopes of globular cluster red giants. We present a tentative detection of 0.3 Msun of neutral hydrogen in M 15 and possible detections of neutral hydrogen in M 2 and Pal 13. We derive upper limits to the neutral hydrogen conten…
We present the analysis of the interstellar spectrum of Pox 36 with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Pox 36 was selected because of the relatively low foreground gas content that makes it possible to detect absorption-lines weak enough that unseen components should not be saturated. Interstellar lines of HI, NI, OI, SiII, PII, ArI, and FeII are detected. Column densities are derived directly from the observed line profiles except for HI, whose lines are contaminated by stellar absorption. We used the TLUSTY models to remove the stellar continuum and isolate the interstellar c…
We present Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) HI observations of 15 edge-on spiral galaxies of intermediate to late morphological type. The global properties and the distribution and kinematics of the HI gas are analysed and discussed. We determine the rotation curves using the envelope-tracing method. For 10 spiral galaxies with a stellar disc truncation we find an average ratio of the HI radius to the truncation radius of the stellar disc of 1.1 +/- 0.2 (1 sigma). This paper has been accepted by MNRAS and is available in pdf-format at the…
The dissociation and subsequent ionisation of molecular material in a detached, spherically symmetric stellar wind is modelled as a star evolves from the post-asymptotic giant branch phase to a planetary nebula (i.e. from a stellar effective temperature of Teff=6000K to Teff=33000K). The model is compared to the observed mass and distribution of ionised and atomic hydrogen in the planetary nebula IC418. It is found that the mass of circumnebular atomic hydrogen observed in IC418 can easily be produced by the dissociation of originally molecular material by the ultraviolet radiation of the cent…
We study the formation of B I lines in a grid of cool stellar model atmospheres without the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). The non-LTE modelling includes the effect of other lines blending with the B I resonance lines. Except for the cases where the B I lines are very strong, the departures from LTE relevant for the resonance lines can be described as an overionisation effect and an optical-pumping effect. This causes the lines to be weaker than in LTE so that an abundance analysis assuming LTE will underestimate stellar boron abundances. We present non-LTE abundance corr…
We analyze the distribution of the interstellar matter in the environs of the Wolf-Rayet star LSS3982 (= WR85, WN6+OB?) linked to the optical ring nebula RCW118. Our study is based on neutral hydrogen 21cm-line data belonging to the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS). The analysis of the HI data allowed the identification of a neutral hydrogen interstellar bubble related to WR 85 and the 25' diameter ring nebula RCW118. The HI bubble was detected at a systemic velocity of -21.5 km/s, corresponding to a kinematical distance of 2.8+/-1.1 kpc, compatible with the stellar distance. The neutral …
A numerical method of mode analysis of rapidly rotating relativistic stellar models by the Cowling approximation is applied to rotating neutron stars with realistic equations of state. For selected equations of state, eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of f-modes are numerically solved for stellar models from non-rotating to maximally rotating states. Neutral points of the lower order f-modes are determined as a function of the stellar rotational frequency. As in the polytropic case, we find that the bar mode can have neutral points for models with relatively strong gravity. The rotational frequen…
