Using the renormalization group method, new type of fluctuation-driven first order phase transitions and critical phenomena are predicted for certain classes of ferromagnetic superconductors and superfluids with unconventional (spin-triplet) Cooper pairing. The problem for the quantum phase transitions at extremely low and zero temperatures is also discussed. The results can be applied to a wide class of ferromagnetic superconductive and superfluid systems, in particular, to itinerant ferromagnets as UGe2 and URhGe.
UBe13 was the second discovered heavy fermion superconductor, and numerous pieces of evidence exist that imply that it is an unconventional (non-BCS, non-s wave pairing symmetry) superconductor. Exhibiting even more signs of unconventional superconductivity, Th-doped UBe13 is perhaps the most puzzling of any of the unconventional superconductors. This review considers both the parent, undoped compound as well as the more interesting Th-doped UBe13. After summarizing the rather thorough characterization, which because of the interest in these compounds has continued from their discovery in 1983…
We report the observation of half-integer magnetic flux quantization in mesoscopic rings of superconducting $β$-Bi$_2$Pd thin films. The half-quantum fluxoid manifests itself as a $π$ phase shift in the quantum oscillation of the critical temperature. This result verifies unconventional superconductivity of $β$-Bi$_2$Pd, in accord with the expectation of a topological superconductor. We also discuss the strong indication that $β$-Bi$_2$Pd is a spin-triplet superconductor.
The discovery of new families of unconventional superconductors is important both experimentally and theoretically, especially if it challenges current models and thinking. By using muon spin relaxation in zero-field, time-reversal symmetry breaking has been observed in Re6Hf. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the superfluid density exhibits s-wave superconductivity with an enhanced electron-phonon coupling. This, coupled with the results from isostructural Re6Zr, shows that the Re6X family are indeed a new and important group of unconventional superconductors.
Nine years ago, superconductors based on the magnetic element iron were discovered. A flurry of research activity has revealed an unprecedented diversity of chemical structures and physical properties. Similarly to other unconventional superconductors, stripe-type antiferromagnetism seems to play an important role. Particularly interesting is its strong coupling to the crystal lattice. The systematic comparison of different compounds may allow to identify key elements in the mechanism of superconductivity and provide guidelines for the search for new and better superconductors.
Using Ginzburg-Landau formalism, we theoretically study the isothermal shear modulus anomaly of an unconventional superconductor with a multicomponent order parameter, when the superconducting transition is split by a symmetry-breaking field. Experimental signatures are proposed for both chiral and nematic superconductors. Particularly striking is the vanishing of $C_{66}$ across the lower transition to a nematic superconducting state. Our findings can guide future experiments and shed new lights on materials such as Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and $M_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$.
We report the sulfur isotope effect on transition temperature in a BiS2-based superconductor Bi4O4S3. Polycrystalline samples of Bi4O4S3 were prepared using 32S and 34S isotope chemicals. From magnetization analyses, the isotope exponent (aS) was estimated as -0.1 < aS < 0.1. Although the Tc estimated from electrical resistivity was scattered as compared to those estimated from the magnetization, we observed no clear correlation between Tc and the isotope mass. The present results suggest that unconventional paring states are essential in Bi4O4S3.
Cooper pairs in two-dimensional unconventional superconductors with broken inversion symmetry are in a mixture of an even-parity spin-singlet pairing state with an odd-parity spin-triplet pairing state. We study the magnetic properties of the impurity bound states in such superconductors and find striking signatures in their spin polarization which allow to unambiguously discriminate a non-topological superconducting phase from a topological one. Moreover, we show how these properties, which could be measured using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), also enable to determine th…
We study the influence of non-magnetic impurity scatterings on the tunneling conductance of a junction consisting of a normal metal and a disordered unconventional superconductor by solving the quasiclassical Eilenberger equation self-consistently. We find that the impurity scatterings in both the Born and unitary limits affect the formation of the Andreev bound states and modify strongly the tunneling spectra around zero bias. Our results are interpreted well by the appearance of odd-frequency Cooper pairs near the interface and by the divergent behavior of the impurity self-energy. The prese…

We investigate the effects of Andreev bound states due to the unconventional pairing on the inverse proximity effect of ferromagnet/superconductor junctions. Utilizing quasiclassical Eilenberger theory, we obtain the magnetization penetrating into the superconductor. We show that in a wide parameter range the direction of the induced magnetization is determined by two factors: whether Andreev bound states are present at the junction interface and the sign of the spin-mixing angle. In particular, when Andreev bound states appear at the interface, the direction of the induced magnetization is op…
Higgs spectroscopy is a new field in which Higgs modes in nonequilibrium superconductors are analyzed to gain information about the ground state. One experimental setup in which the Higgs mode in s-wave superconductors was observed is periodic driving with THz light, which shows resonances in the third-harmonic generation (THG) signal if twice the driving frequency matches the energy of the Higgs mode. We derive expressions of the driven gap oscillations for arbitrary gap symmetry and calculate the THG response. We demonstrate that the possible Higgs modes for superconductors with non-trivial …
Analysis of field-angle dependent specific heat in unconventional superconductors: a comparison between Doppler-shift method and Kramer-Pesch approximation
Chains of magnetic atoms, placed on the surface of s-wave superconductors, have been established as a laboratory for the study of Majorana bound states. In such systems, the breaking of time reversal due to magnetic moments gives rise to the formation of in-gap states, which hybridize to form one-dimensional topological superconductors. However, in unconventional superconductors even non-magnetic impurities induce in-gap states since scattering of Cooper pairs changes their momentum but not their phase. Here, we propose a path for creating topological superconductivity, which is based on an un…
