We present an infinite family of 3-connected non-bipartite graphs with chromatic roots in the interval (1,2) thus resolving a conjecture of Jackson's in the negative. In addition, we briefly consider other graph classes that are conjectured to have no chromatic roots in (1,2).
In this paper, we prove that $(-\infty, 0)$ is a zero-free interval for chromatic polynomials of a family ${\cal L}_0$ of hypergraphs and $(0, 1)$ is a zero-free interval for chromatic polynomials of a subfamily ${\cal L}_0'$ of ${\cal L}_0$ of hypergraphs. These results extend known results on zero-free intervals of chromatic polynomials of graphs and hypergraphs.
We give a proof of Stanley-Stembridge conjecture on chromatic symmetric functions for the class of all unit interval graphs with independence number 3. That is, we show that the chromatic symmetric function of the incomparability graph of a unit interval order in which the length of a chain is at most 3 is positively expanded as a linear sum of elementary symmetric functions.
In 1993, Stanley and Stembridge conjectured that a chromatic symmetric function of any $(3+1)$-free poset is $e$-positive. Guay-Paquet reduced the conjecture to $(3+1)$- and $(2+2)$-free posets which are also called natural unit interval orders. Shareshian and Wachs defined chromatic quasisymmetric functions, generalizing chromatic symmetric functions, and conjectured that a chromatic quasisymmetric function of any natural unit interval order is $e$-positive and $e$-unimodal. For a given natural interval order, there is a corresponding partition $λ$ and we denote the chromatic quasisymmetric f…

Using the definition of colouring of $2$-edge-coloured graphs derived from $2$-edge-coloured graph homomorphism, we extend the definition of chromatic polynomial to $2$-edge-coloured graphs. We find closed forms for the first three coefficients of this polynomial that generalize the known results for the chromatic polynomial of a graph. We classify those $2$-edge-coloured graphs that have a chromatic polynomial equal to the chromatic polynomial of the underlying graph, when every vertex is incident to edges of both colours. Finally, we examine the behaviour of the roots of this polynomial, hig…
We establish a set of recursion relations for the coefficients in the chromatic polynomial of a graph or a hypergraph. As an application we provide a generalization of Whitney's broken cycle theorem for hypergraphs, as well as deriving an explicit formula for the linear coefficient of the chromatic polynomial of the $r$-complete hypergraph in terms of roots of the Taylor polynomials for the exponential function.
In the mysterious and colorful world of chromatic numbers, where there are a lot of unknown, there is an amazing thing. It turns out that for some intervals of forbidden distances on the plane, one can specify the exact value of the chromatic number $χ$. Two sets of such intervals have been found, for $χ=7$ and 9. We call them islands of certainty. Here we increase the size of these islands, and add three new ones with $χ=8$, 12, 13. We also %formulate conjectures which predict conjecture islands for $χ=14$, 15, 16. Are there islands of certainty for $χ$=10 or 11? This is still a mystery. Roll…
Let $\mathfrak g$ be a Borcherds algebra with the associated graph $G$. We prove that the chromatic symmetric function of $G$ can be recovered from the Weyl denominator identity of $\mathfrak g$ and this gives a Lie theoretic proof of Stanley's expression for chromatic symmetric function in terms of power sum symmetric function. Also, this gives an expression for chromatic symmetric function of $G$ in terms of root multiplicities of $\lie g$. The absolute value of the linear coefficient of the chromatic polynomial of $G$ is known as the chromatic discriminant of $G$. As an application of our m…
Hadwiger's famous coloring conjecture states that every $t$-chromatic graph contains a $K_t$-minor. Holroyd [Bull. London Math. Soc. 29, (1997), pp. 139--144] conjectured the following strengthening of Hadwiger's conjecture: If $G$ is a $t$-chromatic graph and $S \subseteq V(G)$ takes all colors in every $t$-coloring of $G$, then $G$ contains a $K_t$-minor rooted at $S$. We prove this conjecture in the first open case of $t=4$. Notably, our result also directly implies a stronger version of Hadwiger's conjecture for $5$-chromatic graphs as follows: Every $5$-chromatic graph contains a $K_5$-mi…
The chromatic number of signed graphs is defined recently. The coloring and clique problem of interval graphs has been studied and polynomial time algorithms are established. Here we consider these problems for signed interval graphs and prove that the coloring problem of signed interval graphs is NP-complete whereas their ordinary clique problem is in P. We also study the complexity of further related problems.
In this paper, we extend the chromatic symmetric function $X$ to a chromatic $k$-multisymmetric function $X_k$, defined for graphs equipped with a partition of their vertex set into $k$ parts. We demonstrate that this new function retains the basic properties and basis expansions of $X$, and we give a method for systematically deriving new linear relationships for $X$ from previous ones by passing them through $X_k$. In particular, we show how to take advantage of homogeneous sets of $G$ (those $S \subseteq V(G)$ such that each vertex of $V(G) \backslash S$ is either adjacent to all of $S$ or …
For a connected graph $G$ of order $n$, let $Diag(Tr)$ be the diagonal matrix of vertex transmissions and $D(G)$ be the distance matrix of $G$. The distance Laplacian matrix of $G$ is defined as $D^L(G)=Diag(Tr)-D(G)$ and the eigenvalues of $D^{L}(G)$ are called the distance Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. Let $\partial_{1}^{L}(G)\geq \partial_{2}^{L}(G)\geq \dots \geq \partial_{n}^{L}(G)$ be the distance Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. Given an interval $I$, let $m_{D^{L} (G)} I$ (or simply $m_{D^{L} } I$) be the number of distance Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ which lie in the interval $I$. For a…
