We present a universal algorithm for an efficient deterministic preparation of an arbitrary two--mode bosonic state. In particular, we discuss in detail preparation of entangled states of a two-dimensional vibrational motion of a trapped ion via a sequence of laser stimulated Raman transitions. Our formalism can be generalized for multi-mode bosonic fields. We examine stability of our algorithm with respect to a technical noise.
Bosonic fault tolerant quantum computing requires preparations of Bosonic code states like cat states and GKP states with high fidelity and reliable quantum certification of these states. Although many proposals on preparing these states have been developed, few investigation has been done on how to reliably certify these experimental states. In this paper, we develop approaches to certify whether a continuous-variable state falls inside a certain Bosonic qubit code space by detecting a witness using Gaussian measurements. Our results can be applied to certification of various cat codes includ…
We investigate in detail the effects of a QND vibrational number measurement made on single ions in a recently proposed measurement scheme for the vibrational state of a register of ions in a linear rf trap [C. D'Helon and G.J. Milburn, Phys. Rev. A 54, 5141 (1996)]. The performance of a measurement shows some interesting patterns which are closely related to searching.
A universal algorithm for a deterministic preparation of arbitrary three--mode bosonic states is introduced. In particular, we consider preparation of entangled quantum states of a vibrational motion of an ion confined in a 3D trapping potential. The target states are established after a proper sequence of laser stimulated Raman transitions. Stability of the algorithm with respect to a technical noise is discussed and the distance (fidelity) of outputs with respect to target states is studied.
We introduce a framework for the calculation of ground and excited state energies of bosonic systems suitable for near-term quantum devices and apply it to molecular vibrational anharmonic Hamiltonians. Our method supports generic reference modal bases and Hamiltonian representations, including the ones that are routinely used in classical vibrational structure calculations. We test different parametrizations of the vibrational wave function, which can be encoded in quantum hardware, based either on heuristic circuits or on the bosonic Unitary Coupled Cluster Ansatz. In particular, we define a…

We study the change of entanglement under general linear transformation of modes in a bosonic system and determine the conditions under which entanglement can be generated under such transformation. As an example we consider the thermal entanglement between the vibrational modes of two coupled oscillators and determine the temperature above which quantum correlations are destroyed by thermal fluctuations.

In this letter we propose a scheme for the preparation of steady entanglements in bosonic dissipative networks. We describe its implementation in a system of coupled cavities interacting with an engineered reservoir built up of three-level atoms. Emblematic bipartite ($Bell$ and $NOON$) and multipartite $W$-class states can be produced with high fidelity and purity.
Preparing problems for execution on quantum computers can require many compilation steps. Automated compilation software is useful not only for easier and faster problem execution, but also for facilitating the comparison between different algorithmic choices. Here we describe mat2qubit, a Python package for encoding several classes of classical and quantum problems into qubit representations. It is intended for use especially on Hamiltonians and functions defined over variables (e.g. particles) with cardinality larger than 2. More specifically, mat2qubit may be used to compile bosonic, phonon…

We describe and analyse numerically schemes (i) for entangling orthogonal motional modes of one or a few harmonically-trapped atoms or ions, and (ii) for transferring the entanglement from one of these local modes to a distant trapped atom (or atoms) via a light-mediated quantum state transfer procedure proposed in previous work [A.S. Parkins and H.J. Kimble, J. Opt. B: Quantum Semiclass. Opt. 1, 496 (1999)]. Possibilities arising from these schemes include the generation of an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state in the positions and momenta of distantly-separated trapped atoms and the preparation o…
We present a hierarchical equations of motion approach, which allows a numerically exact simulation of nonequilibrium transport in general open quantum systems involving multiple macroscopic bosonic and fermionic environments. The performance of the method is demonstrated for a model of a nanosystem, which involves interacting electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom and is coupled to fermionic and bosonic baths. The results show the intricate interplay of electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in this nonequilibrium transport scenario for both voltage and thermally driven transpor…
We propose a scheme for preparation of entangled coherent states for the motion of an ion in a two-dimensional anisotropic trap. In the scheme, the ion is driven by four laser beams along different directions in the ion trap plane, resulting in carrier excitation and couplings between the internal and external degrees of freedom. When the total quantum number of the vibrational modes initially has a definite parity, the competition between the unitary dynamics and spontaneous emission will force the system to evolve to a steady state, where the vibrational modes are in a two-mode cat state. We…
We propose a variational quantum algorithm to prepare ground states of 1D lattice quantum Hamiltonians specifically tailored for programmable quantum devices where interactions among qubits are mediated by Quantum Data Buses (QDB). For trapped ions with the axial Center-Of-Mass (COM) vibrational mode as single QDB, our scheme uses resonant sideband optical pulses as resource operations, which are potentially faster than off-resonant couplings and thus less prone to decoherence. The disentangling of the QDB from the qubits by the end of the state preparation comes as a byproduct of the variatio…
A method of sideband Raman cooling to the vibrational ground state of the $m=0$ Zeeman sublevel in a far-detuned two-dimensional optical lattice is proposed. In our scheme, the Raman coupling between vibrational manifolds of the adjacent Zeeman sublevels is shifted to the red sideband due to the ac Stark effect induced by a weak pump field. Thus, cooling and optical pumping to $m=0$ is achieved by purely optical means with coplanar cw laser beams. The optical lattice and cooling parameters are estimated in the framework of simple theoretical models. An application of the transverse sideband co…
A scheme is presented for realizing a quantum phase gate with three-level atoms, solid-state qubits--often called artificial atoms, or ions that share a quantum data bus such as a single mode field in cavity QED system or a collective vibrational state of trapped ions. In this scheme, the conditional phase shift is tunable and controllable via the total effective interaction time. Furthermore, we show that the method can be used for effective preparation of graph-state entanglement, which are important resources for quantum computation, quantum error correction, studies of multiparticle entang…

We study the entanglement between the 2D vibrational motion and two ground state hyperfine levels of a trapped ion, Under particular conditions this entanglement depends on the parity of the total initial vibrational quanta. We study the robustness of this quantum coherence effect with respect to the presence of non-dissipative sources of decoherence, and of an imperfect initial state preparation.
We report a novel and simple approach for generating near-perfect quality polarization entanglement in a fully guided-wave fashion. Both deterministic pair separation into two adjacent telecommunication channels and the paired photons' temporal walk-off compensation are achieved using standard fiber components. Two-photon interference experiments are performed, both for quantitatively demonstrating the relevance of our approach, and for manipulating the produced state between bosonic and fermionic symmetries. The compactness, versatility, and reliability of this configuration makes it a potent…
We employ a semiclassical picture to study dynamics in a bosonic Josephson junction with various initial conditions. Phase-diffusion of coherent preparations in the Josephson regime is shown to depend on the initial relative phase between the two condensates. For initially incoherent condensates, we find a universal value for the buildup of coherence in the Josephson regime. In addition, we contrast two seemingly similar on-separatrix coherent preparations, finding striking differences in their convergence to classicality as the number of particles increases.
Arrays of neutral-atom qubits in optical tweezers are a promising platform for quantum computation. Despite experimental progress, a major roadblock for realizing neutral atom quantum computation is the qubit initialization. Here we propose that supersymmetry -- a theoretical framework developed in particle physics -- can be used for ultra-high fidelity initialization of neutral-atom qubits. We show that a single atom can be deterministically prepared in the vibrational ground state of an optical tweezer by adiabatically extracting all excited atoms to a supersymmetric auxiliary tweezer. The s…
A single quantum of excitation of a mechanical oscillator is a textbook example of the principles of quantum physics. Mechanical oscillators, despite their pervasive presence in nature and modern technology, do not generically exist in an excited Fock state. In the past few years, careful isolation of GHz-frequency nano-scale oscillators has allowed experimenters to prepare such states at milli-Kelvin temperatures. These developments illustrate the tension between the basic predictions of quantum mechanics that should apply to all mechanical oscillators existing even at ambient conditions, and…
We study how stable excited many-body states of the Bose-Hubbard model, including both the gas-like state for strongly attractive bosons and bound cluster state for repulsive bosons, can be produced with cold bosonic atoms in an one-dimensional optical lattice. Starting from the initial ground states of strongly interacting bosonic systems, we can achieve stable excited states of the systems with opposite interaction strength by suddenly switching the interaction to the opposite limit. By exactly solving dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model, we demonstrate that the produced excited state can be …
Fast and efficient state preparation of molecules can be accomplished by optical pumping. Molecular structure that most obviously facilitates cycling involves a strong electronic transition, with favorable vibrational branching (diagonal Franck-Condon factors, aka FCFs) and without any intervening electronic states. Here, we propose important adjustments to those criteria, based on our experience optically pumping SiO$^+$. Specifically, the preference for no intervening electronic states should be revised, and over-reliance on FCFs can miss important features. The intervening electronic state …
Simulation of quantum systems is expected to be one of the most important applications of quantum computing, with much of the theoretical work so far having focused on fermionic and spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ systems. Here, we instead consider encodings of $d$-level (i.e. qudit) quantum operators into multi-qubit operators, studying resource requirements for approximating operator exponentials by Trotterization. We primarily focus on spin-$s$ and truncated bosonic operators in second quantization, observing desirable properties for approaches based on the Gray code, which to our knowledge has not been…
Universal control over a bosonic degree of freedom is key in the quest for quantum-based technologies. Such universal control requires however the ability to perform demanding non-Gaussian gates -- namely, higher-than-quadratic interactions at the level of the bosonic operators. Here we consider a single ancillary two-level system, interacting with the bosonic mode of interest via a driven quantum Rabi model, and show that it is sufficient to induce the deterministic realization of a large class of Gaussian and non-Gaussian gates, which in turn provide universal bosonic control. This scheme re…
We systematically study the influence of amplitude modulation on the steady-state bosonic squeezing and entanglement in a dissipative three-mode optomechanical system, where a vibrational mode of the membrane is coupled to the left and right cavity modes via the radiation pressure. Numerical simulation results show that the steady-state bosonic squeezing and entanglement can be significantly enhanced by periodically modulated external laser driving either or both ends of the cavity. Remarkably, the fact that as long as one periodically modulated external laser driving either end of the cavitie…
A long-lived coherent state and non-linear interaction have been experimentally demonstrated for the vibrational mode of a trapped ion. We propose an implementation of quantum computation using coherent states of the vibrational modes of trapped ions. Differently from earlier experiments, we consider a far-off resonance for the interaction between external fields and the ion in a bidimensional trap. By appropriate choices of the detunings between the external fields, the adiabatic elimination of the ionic excited level from the Hamiltonian of the system allows for beam splitting between orthog…
In order to use a collection of trapped ions for experiments where a well defined preparation of vibrational states is necessary, all vibrational modes have to be cooled to ensure precise and repeatable manipulation of the ions' quantum states. A method for simultaneous sideband cooling of all axial vibrational modes is proposed. By application of a magnetic field gradient the absorption spectrum of each ion is modified such that sideband resonances of different vibrational modes coincide. The ion string is then irradiated with monochromatic electromagnetic radiation, in the optical or microwa…
We present a simple and efficient scheme to reduce atom-number fluctuations in optical lattices. The interaction-energy difference for atoms in different vibrational states is used to remove excess atomic occupation. The remaining vacant sites are then filled with atoms by merging adjacent wells, for which we implement a protocol that circumvents the constraints of unitarity. The preparation of large regions with precisely one atom per lattice site is discussed for both bosons and fermions. The resulting low-entropy Mott-insulating states may serve as high-fidelity register states for quantum …
Reservoir engineering enables the robust preparation of pure quantum states in noisy environments. We show how a new family of quantum states of a mechanical oscillator can be stabilized in a cavity that is parametrically coupled to both the mechanical displacement and the displacement squared. The cavity is driven with three tones, on the red sideband, on the cavity resonance and on the second blue sideband. The states so stabilized are (squeezed and displaced) superpositions of a finite number of phonons. They show the unique feature of encompassing two prototypes of nonclassicality for boso…
In this work, we provided a proof-of-principle of efficient production of maximally entangled states using charged quantum dots coupled to vibrational modes. The physical system consists of two pairs of quantum dots, each pair with a single electron able to tunnel between the dots, thus encoding a qubit. The electrons, initially not coupled, interact with two bosonic vibrational modes. It is demonstrated that the electron-vibrational mode coupling drives to an effective electron-electron interaction, which is the main mechanism behind the formation of maximally quantum entangled electronic sta…
Fractional quantum Hall systems are among the most exciting strongly correlated systems. Accessing them microscopically via quantum simulations with ultracold atoms would be an important achievement toward a better understanding of this strongly correlated state of matter. A promising approach is to confine a small number of bosonic atoms in a quasi-two-dimensional rotating trap, which mimics the magnetic field. For rotation frequencies close to the in-plane trapping frequency, the ground state is predicted to be a bosonic analog of the Laughlin state. Here, we study the problem of the adiabat…
