We study quantum effects of light propagation through an extended absorbing system of two-level atoms placed within a frequency gap medium (FGM). Apart from ordinary solitons and single particle impurity band states, the many-particle spectrum of the system contains massive pairs of confined gap excitations and their bound complexes - gap solitons. In addition, ``composite'' solitons are predicted as bound states of ordinary and gap solitons. Quantum gap and composite solitons propagate without dissipation, and should be associated with self-induced transparency pulses in a FGM.
Propagation of two dimensional pulses in electromagnetically induced tranparency media in the case of perpendicular storing and retrieving pulses has been analyzed. It has been shown that propagation control of the pulses in optically thick media can be used for producing interchange between pulse time-shape and intensity profile distribution. A simple obvious analytical solution for the retrieved new field has been obtained.
We show that the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) is possible in a medium exhibiting Rydberg excitons and indicate the realistic parameters to perform the experiment. The calculations for a Cu$_2$O crystal are given which show that in this medium due to large group index one could expect slowing down a light pulse by a factor about $10^4$.
We study, theoretically and experimentally, electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in two different solid-state systems. Unlike many implementations in homogeneously broadened media, these systems exhibit inhomogeneous broadening of their optical and spin transitions typical of solid-state materials. We observe EIT lineshapes typical of atomic gases, including a crossover into the regime of Autler-Townes splitting, but with the substitution of the inhomogeneous widths for the homogeneous values. We obtain quantitative agreement between experiment and theory for the width of the transpa…
Electromagnetically induced transparency and coherent population trapping were observed in a hot (1000 K) calcium vapor embedded into an electrical gas discharge. Unexpectedly large transparencies (of up to 70%) were observed under very unfavorable conditions: probe wavelength shorter than the coupling wavelength, and coupling Rabi frequency significantly smaller than the residual Doppler linewidth of the two photon transition. We developed a theoretical model that shows that the observed results are due to the combined effects of a strong probe beam and a small open character of the atomic sy…
Here we present a microscopic model that describes the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) phenomenon in the multiple scattering regime. We consider an ensemble of cold three-level atoms, in a $Λ$ configuration, scattering a probe and a control field to the vacuum modes of the electromagnetic field. By first considering a scalar description of the scattering, we show that the light-mediated long-range interactions that emerge between the dipoles narrow the EIT transparency window for increasing densities and sample sizes. For a vectorial description, we demonstrate that near-field i…
Coexistence of coupling-induced transparency (CIT) and absorption (CIA) of signals in magnon-mediated photon-photon coupling was experimentally determined in a planar hybrid structure consisting of a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film and three concentric inverted-split-ring resonators (ISRRs). The experimental observation of simultaneous CIT and CIA phenomena was ascribed to magnon-mediated photon-photon coupling between the individually decoupled ISRRs. In order to capture the generic physics of the observed interactions, we constructed an appropriate analytical model based on the balance betwee…
We study the effects of dispersion in carrier waves on the properties of soliton self--induced transparency (SIT) in two level media. We found substantial impact of dispersion effects on typical SIT soliton features. For example, the degree of SIT pulse velocity slowing down (acceleration) is determined by the ratio of the incoming pulse frequency over atomic transition frequency - $x=ω/ω_0$. Specifically, an immediate pulse stopping is predicted for absorbing media when pulse duration time exceeds some critical value. In the sharp line limit stopping may emerge only for frequency ratio above …
We consider a medium of multilevel atomic systems interacting with radiation pulses. A relatively simple technique of analytic calculations is proposed, which allows revealing all necessary conditions (with sufficient conditions to be checked separately) imposed on the interaction parameters, for which the mean dipole moment of a multilevel atomic medium vanishes, i.e., the medium becomes transparent via adiabatic interaction. The proposed technique is based on the method of quasienergies and illustrated for three- and five-level atomic systems. The necessary conditions for the propagation len…
The broadband parametric fluorescence pulse (probe light) with center frequency resonant on 87Rb D1 line was injected into a cold atomic ensemble with coherent light (control light). Due to the low gain in the parametric down conversion process, the probe light was in a highly bunched photon-pair state. By switching off the control light, the probe light within the electromagnetically induced transparency window was mapped on the atoms. When the control light was switched on, the probe light was retrieved and frequency filtered storage was confirmed from the superbunching effect and an increas…
Suppression of wave scattering and the realization of transparency effects in engineered optical media and surfaces have attracted great attention in the past recent years. In this work the problem of transparency is considered for optical wave propagation in a nonlinear dielectric medium with second-order $χ^{(2)}$ susceptibility. Because of nonlinear interaction, a reference signal wave at carrier frequency $ω_1$ can exchange power, thus being amplified or attenuated, when phase matching conditions are satisfied and frequency conversion takes place. Therefore, rather generally the medium is n…
Cavities with extremely narrow linewidth of 10-100 Hz are required for realizing frequency dependent squeezing to enable gravitational wave detectors to surpass the free mass standard quantum limit over a broad frequency range. Hundred-meter-scale high finesse cavities have been proposed for this purpose. Optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) enables the creation of optomechanical cavities in which the linewidth limit is set by the extremely narrow linewidth of a high Q factor mechanical resonator. Using an 85mm OMIT cavity with a silicon nitride membrane, we demonstrate a tunable linew…
We study the influence of a lossless material medium on the coherent storage and quantum state transfer of a quantized probe light in an ensemble of $Λ$-type atoms. The medium is modeled as uniformly distributed two-level atoms with same energy level spacing, coupling to a probe light. This coupled system can be simplified to a collection of two-mode polaritons which couple to one transition of the $Λ$-type atoms. We show that, when the other transition of $Λ$-type atoms is controlled by a classical light, the electromagnetically induced transparency can also occur for the polaritons. In this …
We demonstrate laser frequency stabilization to excited state transitions using cascade electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Using a room temperature Rb vapor cell as a reference, we stabilize a first diode laser to the D2 transition and a second laser to a transition from the intermediate state to a Rydberg state with principal quantum number n=19 - 70. A combined laser linewidth of 280 kHz over a 0.1 ms time period is achieved. This method may be applied generally to any cascade system and allows laser stabilization to an atomic reference in the absence of strong optical transitio…
We study the effects of frequency-dependent squeeze amplitude attenuation and squeeze angle rotation by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) on gravitational wave (GW) interferometers. We propose the use of low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass EIT filters, an S-shaped EIT filter, and an intra-cavity EIT filter to generate frequency-dependent squeezing for injection into the antisymmetric port of GW interferometers. We find that the EIT filters have several advantages over the previous filter designs with regard to optical losses, compactness, and the tunability of the filter linewidth.
A nondegenerate four-level N-type scheme was experimentally implemented to observe electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) at the $^{87}$Rb D$_{2}$ line. Radiations of two independent external-cavity semiconductor lasers were used in the experiment, the current of one of them being modulated at a frequency equal to the hyperfine-splitting frequency of the excited 5P$_{3/2}$ level. In this case, apart from the main EIT dip corresponding to the two-photon Raman resonance in a three-level $Λ$-scheme, additional dips detuned from the main dip by a frequency equal to the frequency of the HF …
Quantum entanglement is an essential ingredient for the absolute security of quantum communication. Generation of continuous-variable entanglement or two-mode squeezing between light fields based on the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been systematically investigated in this work. Here, we propose a new scheme to enhance the degree of entanglement between probe and coupling fields of coherent-state light by introducing a two-photon detuning in the EIT system. This proposed scheme is more efficient than the conventional one, utilizing the dephasing rate of ground-st…
We present a phase induced transparency based scheme to generate structured beam patterns in a closed four level atomic system. We employ phase structured probe beam and a transverse magnetic field (TMF) to create phase dependent medium susceptibility. We show that such phase dependent modulation of absorption holds the key to formation of a structured beam. We use a full density matrix formalism to explain the experiments of Radwell et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114,123603 (2015)] at weak probe limits. Our numerical results on beam propagation confirms that the phase information present in the abs…
Electromagnetically-induced transparency has become an important tool to control the optical properties of dense media. However, in a broad class of systems, the interplay between inhomogeneous broadening and the existence of several excited levels may lead to a vanishing transparency. Here, by identifying the underlying physical mechanisms resulting in this effect, we show that transparency can be strongly enhanced. We thereby demonstrate a 5-fold enhancement in a room-temperature vapor of alkali-metal atoms via a specific shaping of the atomic velocity distribution.
We consider an optomechanical cavity made by two moving mirrors which contains a Kerr-down conversion nonlinear crystal. We show that the coherent oscillations of the two mechanical oscil- lators can lead to splitting in the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance, and appearance of an absorption peak within the transparency window. In this configuration the coher- ent induced splitting of EIT is similar to driving a hyperfine transition in an atomic Lambda-type three-level system by a radio-frequency or microwave field. Also, we show that the presence of non- linearity provid…
Developments in photonic chips have spurred photon based classical and quantum information processing, attributing to the high stability and scalability of integrated photonic devices [1, 2]. Optical nonlinearity [3] is indispensable in these complex photonic circuits, because it allows for classical and quantum light sources, all-optical switch, modulation, and non-reciprocity in ambient environments. It is commonly known that nonlinear interactions are often greatly enhanced in the microcavities [4]. However, the manifestations of coherent photon-photon interaction in a cavity, analogous to …
A frequency beam splitter (FBS) with the split ratio of 0.5 or 1 can be used as the frequency-mode Hadamard gate (FHG) for frequency-encoded photonic qubits or as the quantum frequency converter (QFC) for frequency up or down conversion of photons. Previous works revealed that all kinds of the FHG or QFC operating at the single-photon level had overall efficiency or output-to-input ratio around 50% or less. In this work, our FHG and QFC are made with the four-wave mixing process based on the dual-$Λ$ electromagnetically induced transparency scheme. We achieved an overall efficiency of 90$\pm$4…
We theoretically investigate the phenomenon of voltage-controlled intracavity electromagnetically induced transparency with asymmetric double quantum dot system. The impact of voltage on frequency pulling and cavity linewidth narrowing are discussed. The linewidth and position of the cavity transmission can be engineered by the bias voltage. The scheme may be useful in integrated electro-optical device in quantum information process.
Photonic crystals doped with resonant atoms allow for uniquely advantageous nonlinear modes of optical propagation: (a) Self-induced transparency (SIT) solitons and multi-dimensional localized "bullets" propagating at photonic band gap frequencies. These modes can exist even at ultraweak intensities (few photons) and therefore differ substantially either from solitons in Kerr-nonlinear photonic crystals or from SIT solitons in uniform media. (b) Cross-coupling between pulses exhibiting electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and SIT gap solitons. We show that extremely strong correlatio…
We present a Maxwell-Bloch description of the dynamics of a light pulse propagating through a spatially inhomogeneous system consisting of alternating layers of EIT media and vacuum. We study the effect of a dynamical modulation of the EIT control field on the shape of the wave packet: interesting effects due to the presence of interfaces with group velocity mismatch are found. An effective description based on a continuity equation is developed. Modulation schemes that can be realized in ultracold atomic samples with standard experimental techniques are proposed and discussed.
We show that a waveguide that is normally opaque due to interaction with a drop-filter cavity can be made transparent when the drop filter is also coupled to a dipole. A transparency condition is derived between the cavity lifetime and vacuum Rabi frequency of the dipole. This condition is much weaker than strong coupling, and amounts to simply achieving large Purcell factors. Thus, we can observe transparency in the weak coupling regime. We describe how this effect can be useful for designing quantum repeaters for long distance quantum communication.
We experimentally and theoretically analyze the transmission of continuous-wave and pulsed squeezed vacuum through rubidium vapor under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. Frequency- and time-domain homodyne tomography is used to measure the quadrature noise and reconstruct the quantum states of the transmitted light. A simple theoretical model explains the spectrum and degradation of the transmitted squeezing with high precision.
We theoretically study a parallel optical configuration which includes N periodically coupled whispering-gallery-mode resonators. The model shows an obvious effect which has a direct analogy with the phenomenon of multiple electromagnetically induced transparency in quantum systems. The numerical simulations illuminate that the frequency transparency windows are sharp and highly transparent. We also briefly discuss the experimental feasibility of the current scheme in two practical systems, microrings and microdisks.
High-quality microwave amplifiers and notch-filters can be made from microwave optomechanical systems in which a mechanical resonator is coupled to a microwave cavity by radiation pressure. These amplifiers and filters rely on optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) and absorption (OMIA), respectively. Such devices can amplify microwave signals with large, controllable gain, high dynamic range and very low noise. Furthermore, extremely narrowband filters can be constructed with this technique. We briefly review previous measurements of microwave OMIT and OMIA before reporting our own meas…
The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an $N$ configuration is studied under both resonant and off-resonant conditions. In a certain off-resonant condition the dark state of the four level system, which is almost the same as the resonant dark state in $Λ$ configuration, is rebuilt. The actual system with damping is examined using optical Bloch equation, both numerically and analytically. Based on this detuned dark state, some new applications with frequency shifts can be realized.
The correlation spectroscopy has been successfully employed in the measurement of the intrinsic linewidth of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in time and frequency domain. We study the role of the sidebands of the intense fields in the measured spectra, analyzing the information that can be recovered working with different analysis frequencies. In this case, the non-zero one-photon detuning appears as a necessary condition for spectrally resolving the sideband resonances in the correlation coefficient. Our experimental findings are supported by the perturbative model defined in t…
We theoretically investigate the analog of electromagnetically induced transparency, absorption and parametric amplification in a hybrid opto-electromechanical system consisting of an optical cavity and a microwave cavity coupled to a common nanomechanical resonator. When the two cavity modes are driven on their respective red sidebands by two pump beams and a probe beam is applied to the optical cavity to monitor the optical response of the hybrid system, we find that a transparency window appears in the probe transmission spectrum due to destructive interference. When the optical cavity is p…
Exact positive and negative energy solutions for the eigenvalue problem of the Schrödinger equation in one dimension with a $δ^\prime$ interaction are found and analyzed. An infinite series of transparency resonance levels in the strength of this interaction is shown to exist. This result is against the actual belief that the $δ^\prime$ potential acts as a totally reflecting wall. A finite number of bound states is obtained, contrary to the previous result on the existence of only one bound state. A new effect of a {\it negative stepwise} drop in the electron density across the $δ^\prime$ junc…
Coherent manipulation of single-photon wave packets is essentially important for optical quantum communication and quantum information processing. In this paper, we realize controllable splitting and modulation of single-photon-level pulses by using a tripod-type atomic medium. The adoption of two control beams enable us to store one signal pulse into superposition of two distinct atomic collective excitations. By controlling the time delay between the two control pulses, we observe splitting of a stored wave packet into two temporally-distinct modes. By controlling the frequency detuning of t…
We theoretically demonstrate the mechanically mediated electromagnetically induced transparency in a two-mode cavity optomechanical system, where two cavity modes are coupled to a common mechanical resonator. When the two cavity modes are driven on their respective red sidebands by two pump beams, a transparency window appears in the probe transmission spectrum due to destructive interference. Under this situation the transmitted probe beam can be delayed as much as 4 us, which can be easily controlled by the power of the pump beams. In addition, we also investigate the amplification of the tr…
We show that electromagnetically-induced transparency and lasing without inversion are simultaneously achieved for microwave fields by using a fluxonium superconducting circuit. As a result of the $Δ$ energy-level structure of this artificial three-level atom, we find the surprising phenomenon that the electromagnetically-induced transparency window in the frequency domain is sandwiched between absorption on one side and amplification on the other side.
We investigate a hybrid optomechanical system comprised of a mechanical oscillator and an atomic 3-level ensemble within an optical cavity. We show that a suitably tailored cavity field response via Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) in the atomic medium allows for strong coupling of the mechanical mirror oscillations to the collective atomic ground-state spin. This facilitates ground-state cooling of the mirror motion, quantum state mapping and robust atom-mirror entanglement even for cavity widths larger than the mechanical oscillator frequency.
We determine the optical response of a thin and dense layer of interacting quantum emitters. We show that in such a dense system, the Lorentz redshift and the associated interaction broadening can be used to control the transmission and reflection spectra. In the presence of overlapping resonances, a Dipole-Induced Electromagnetic Transparency (DIET) regime, similar to Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT), may be achieved. DIET relies on destructive interference between the electromagnetic waves emitted by quantum emitters. Carefully tuning material parameters allows to achieve narro…
For Doppler-broadened media operating under double-double electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) conditions, we devise a scheme to control and reduce the probe-field group velocity at the center of the second transparency window. We derive numerical and approximate analytical solutions for the width of EIT windows and for the group velocities of the probe field at the two distinct transparency windows, and we show that the group velocities of the probe field can be lowered by judiciously choosing the physical parameters of the system. Our modeling enables us to identify three signal-fi…
We study the optic control for birefringence of a polarized light by an atomic ensemble with a tripod configuration, which is mediated by the electromagnetically induced transparency with a spatially inhomogeneous laser. The atom ensemble splits the linearly polarized light ray into two orthogonally-polarized components, whose polarizations depend on quantum superposition of the initial states of the atom ensemble. Accompanied with this splitting, the atom ensemble behaves as a birefringent lens, which allows one polarized light ray passing through straightly while focus another orthogonal to …
We experimentally investigate electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) created on an inhomogeneously broadened 5S_1/2-5P_1/2 transition in rubidium vapor using a control field of a complex temporal shape. A comb-shaped transparency spectrum enhances the delay-bandwidth product and the light storage capacity for a matched probe pulse by a factor of about 50 compared to a single EIT line [D. D. Yavuz, Phys. Rev. A 75, 031801 (2007)]. If the temporal mode of the control field is slowly changed while the probe is propagating through the EIT medium, the probe will adiabatically follow, provid…
We report the observation of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) of a mechanical field, where a superconducting artificial atom is coupled to a 1D-transmission line for surface acoustic waves. An electromagnetic microwave drive is used as the control field, rendering the superconducting transmon qubit transparent to the acoustic probe beam. The strong frequency dependence of the acoustic coupling enables EIT in a ladder configuration due to the suppressed relaxation of the upper level. Our results show that superconducting circuits can be engineered to interact with acoustic fields …
We consider the dynamical behavior of a nanomechanical mirror in a high-quality cavity under the action of a coupling laser and a probe laser. We demonstrate the existence of the analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the output field at the probe frequency. Our calculations show explicitly the origin of EIT-like dips as well as the characteristic changes in dispersion from anomalous to normal in the range where EIT dips occur. Remarkably the pump-probe response for the opto mechanical system shares all the features of the Lambda system as discovered by Harris and collabor…
We describe in this Letter how inhomogeneous line broadening affects the Autler-Townes (AT) splitting in a three level open molecular cascade system. For moderate Rabi frequencies in the range of 300 to 500 MHz the fluorescence line shape from the uppermost level |3> in this system depends strongly on the frequency ratio of the two laser fields. However, the fluorescence spectrum of the intermediate level |2> appears as expected. We provide a description of the conditions for optimally resolved AT splitting in terms of the probe laser/coupling field frequency ratio and laser propagation geomet…
We present experimental observation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) on a single macroscopic artificial "atom" (superconducting quantum system) coupled to open 1D space of a transmission line. Unlike in a optical media with many atoms, the single atom EIT in 1D space is revealed in suppression of reflection of electromagnetic waves, rather than absorption. The observed almost 100 % modulation of the reflection and transmission of propagating microwaves demonstrates full controllability of individual artificial atoms and a possibility to manipulate the atomic states. The system…
The quest of utilizing neutral particles to simulate the behaviour of charged particles in a magnetic field makes the generation of artificial magnetic field of great interest. The previous and the only proposal for the production of synthetic magnetic field for the dark state polaritons in electromagnetically induced transparency invokes the mechanical rotation of a sample. Here, we put forward an optical scheme to generate effective gauge potentials for stationary-light polaritons. 5To demonstrate the capabilities of our approach, we present recipes for having dark state polaritons in degene…
We analyze the two-photon linewidth of the recently proposed adiabatic transfer technique for ``stopping'' of light using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We shown that a successful and reliable transfer of excitation from light to atoms and back can be achieved if the spectrum of the input probe pulse lies within the initial transparency window of EIT, and if the two-photon detuning $δ$ is less than the collective coupling strength (collective vacuum Rabi-frequency) $g\sqrt{N}$ divided by $\sqrt{γT}$, with $γ$ being the radiative decay rate, $N$ the effective number of atoms in…
Magnetically Induced Transparency-Absorption and Normal-Anomalous Dispersion Characteristics of ${}^{87}\text{Rb}$ Medium or Any J-Type Configuration Atomic Vapors Subject to a Vector Magnetic Field and a Weak Resonant Pump
We investigate the effect of band-limited white Gaussian noise (BLWGN) on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes (AT) splitting, when performing atom-based continuous-wave (CW) radio-frequency (RF) electric (E) field strength measurements with Rydberg atoms in an atomic vapor. This EIT/AT-based E-field measurement approach is currently being investigated by several groups around the world as a means to develop a new SI traceable RF E-field measurement technique. For this to be a useful technique, it is important to understand the influence of BLWGN. We perform EIT/AT …
Optical interferometers with suspended mirrors are the archetype of all current audio-frequency gravitational-wave detectors. The radiation pressure interaction between the motion of the mirror and the circulating optical field in such interferometers represents a pristine form of light-matter coupling, largely due to 30 years of effort in developing high quality optical materials with low mechanical dissipation. However, in all current suspended interferometers, the radiation pressure interaction is too weak to be useful as a resource, and too strong to be neglected. Here, we demonstrate a me…
We propose a metamaterial to realize true electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), where the incidence of an auxiliary electromagnetic wave called the control wave induces transparency for a probe wave. The analogy to the original EIT effect in an atomic medium is shown through analytical and numerical calculations derived from a circuit model for the metamaterial. We performed experiments to demonstrate the EIT effect of the metamaterial in the microwave region. The width and position of the transparent region can be controlled by the power and frequency of the control wave. We also ob…
