This work analyzes the effects of shielding on the Aharonov-Bohm scattering of electrons endowed with spin. The interaction of polarized electrons with bare and shielded magnetic strings is studied with the aid of the Dirac equation. It is found that the difference between the amplitudes for the scattering by bare and shielded strings of incident wave packets of width $δ$ and impact parameter $d$ is proportional to $\exp(-d^2/2δ^2)$.
The claim that Kuwahara et al. [1] have reported the observation of a Hanbury Brown-Twiss electron antibunching dip (their Fig. 3) could possibly be explained as an electron source emission rate dependency on the light polarization. Strain on their GaAs/GaAsP sample is uniaxial, and one would expect a linear dichroism in the photoemission possibly as large as 15% [7] - much larger than the 0.1% reported effect. The same concern exist for circular polarized light.
In this paper, we study two-photon interference of broadband chaotic light in a Michelson interferometer with two-photon-absorption detector. The theoretical analysis is based on two-photon interference and Feynman path integral theory. The two-photon coherence matrix is introduced to calculate the second-order interference pattern with polarizations being taken into account. Our study shows that the polarization is another dimension, as well as time and space, to tune the interference pattern in the two-photon interference process. It can act as a switch to manipulate the interference process…
We investigate the influence of intense, elliptically polarized driving fields on high-order harmonic spectra from aligned diatomic molecules. We derive a generalized two-center interference condition for elliptically polarized fields, which accounts for s-p mixing and the orbital symmetry, within the strong-field and the single-active electron approximation. We show that the non-vanishing ellipticity introduces an effective dynamic shift in the angle for which the two-center interference maxima and minima occur, with regard to the existing condition for linearly polarized fields. This shift d…
We investigate direct above-threshold ionization in diatomic molecules, with particular emphasis on how quantum interference is altered by a driving field of non-vanishing ellipticity. This interference may be either temporal, i.e., related to ionization events occurring at different times, or spatial, i.e., related to the electron emission at different centers in the molecule. Employing the strong-field approximation and saddle-point methods, we find that, in general, for non-vanishing ellipticity, there will be a blurring of the temporal and spatial interference patterns. The former blurring…
We investigate the liberation of an atomic electron by a linearly polarized single-cycle near-infrared laser pulse having a peak intensity that ensures tunneling. Based on phase space analysis and energy distribution in the instantaneous potential, we reveal the importance of quantum interference between tunneling and over-the-barrier pathways of escape. Tunneling is blurred both in space and time, and the contribution of tunneling at the mean energy is almost negligible. We suggest and justify improved initial conditions for a classical particle approximation of strong-field ionization, based…
We perform a systematic analysis of how ultrafast photoelectron holography is influenced by an elliptically polarized field, with emphasis on quantum interference effects. We find that the interplay of the external field and the binding potential leads to twisted holographic patterns for low ellipticities and recover well-known angular offsets for high ellipticities. Using the Coulomb quantum-orbit strong-field approximation (CQSFA), we assess how the field ellipticity affects specific holographic patterns, such as the fan and the spider. The interplay of the external field and the binding pot…
Bohmian mechanics allows to visualize and understand the quantum-mechanical behavior of massive particles in terms of trajectories. As shown by Bialynicki-Birula, Electromagnetism also admits a hydrodynamical formulation when the existence of a wave function for photons (properly defined) is assumed. This formulation thus provides an alternative interpretation of optical phenomena in terms of photon trajectories, whose flow yields a pictorial view of the evolution of the electromagnetic energy density in configuration space. This trajectory-based theoretical framework is considered here to stu…
A linear optical probabilistic scheme for the optimal cloning of a pair of orthogonally-polarized photons is devised, based on single- and two-photon interferences. It consists in a partial symmetrization device, realized with a modified unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer, followed by two independent Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometers. This scheme has the advantage that it enables quantum cloning without the need for stimulated amplification in a nonlinear medium. It can also be modified so to make an optical two-qubit partial SWAP gate, thereby providing a potentially useful tool to linear op…
As a fundamental postulate of quantum mechanics, Born's rule assigns probabilities to the measurement outcomes of quantum systems and excludes multi-order quantum interference. Here we report an experiment on a single spin in diamond to test Born's rule by inspecting the third-order quantum interference. The ratio of the third-order quantum interference to the second-order in our experiment is ceiled at the scale of $10^{-3}$, which provides a stringent constraint on the potential breakdown of Born's rule.
We propose a scheme for the resonant generation of counter-polarized single photons in double asymmetric cavities with a small Kerr optical nonlinearity (as that created by a semiconductor quantum well) compared to the mode broadening. Due to the interplay between spatial intercavity tunneling and polarization coupling, by weakly exciting with circularly polarized light one of the cavities, we predict strong antibunching of counter-polarized light emission from the non-pumped auxiliary cavity. This scheme due to quantum interference is robust against surface scattering of pumping light, which …
The method of many-particle quantum hydrodynamics has been recently developed, particularly this method has been used for an electrically polarized Bose-Einstein condensate. In this paper, we present the development of this method for an electrically polarized three dimensional Fermi gas. We derive corresponding dynamical equations: equation polarization and equation of polarization current evolution as well as the Euler and continuity equations. We study dispersion dependencies of collective excitations in a polarized Fermi gas and consider interference of an equilibrium polarization on dispe…
We present an optical scheme to detect the oscillations of a two-ion string confined in a linear Paul trap. The motion is detected by analyzing the intensity correlations in the fluorescence light emitted by one or two ions in the string. We present measurements performed under continuous Doppler cooling and under pulsed illumination. We foresee several direct applications of this detection method, including motional analysis of multi-ion species or coupled mechanical oscillators, and sensing of mechanical correlations.
Using the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner (DHW) formalism, e?ects of asymmetric pulse shape on the generation of electron-positron pairs in three typical polarized fields, i.e., the linear, middle elliptical and circular ones, are investigated. Two kinds of asymmetries for the falling pulse length, one is compressed and the other is elongated, are studied. It is found that the interference e?ect disappears with the compression of the pulse length, and finally the peak value of the momentum spectrum is concentrated in the center of the momentum space. For the opposite situation by extending the falling…
In the framework of open quantum systems, the propagation of polarized photons can be effectively described using quantum dynamical semigroups. These extended time-evolutions induce irreversibility and dissipation. Planned, high sensitive experiments, both in the laboratory and in space, will be able to put stringent bounds on these non-standard effects.
The demonstration of optical multipath interference from a large number of quantum emitters is essential for the realization of many paradigmatic experiments in quantum optics. However, such interference remains still unexplored as it crucially depends on the sub-wavelength positioning accuracy and stability of all emitters. We present the observation of controlled interference of light scattered from strings of up to 53~trapped ions. The light scattered from ions localized in a harmonic trapping potential is collected along the ion crystal symmetry axis, which guarantees the spatial indisting…
We propose a method for measuring the string tension in gauge theories, by considering an interference effect of mesons, which is governed by a space-time area law, due to confinement. Although it is only a gedanken experiment for real elementary particles, in the context of quantum simulations of confining gauge theories such an experiment can be realized.
Sequences of alternating-sign time-dependent electric field pulses lead to coherent interference effects in Schwinger vacuum pair production, producing a Ramsey interferometer, an all-optical time-domain realization of the multiple-slit interference effect, directly from the quantum vacuum. The interference, obeying fermionic quantum statistics, is manifest in the momentum dependence of the number of produced electrons and positrons along the linearly polarized electric field. The central value grows like $N^2$ for $N$ pulses [i.e., $N$ "slits"], and the functional form is well-described by a …
For a circularly polarized single-color field at a central frequency of $2ω$ the final electron momentum distribution upon strong field ionization does not carry any information about the phase of the initial momentum distribution. Adding a weak, co-rotating, circularly polarized field at a central frequency of $ω$ gives rise to a sub-cycle interference pattern (holographic angular streaking of electrons (HASE)). This interference pattern allows for the retrieval of the derivative of the phase of the initial momentum distribution after tunneling $ϕ^{\prime}_{\mathrm{off}}(p_i)$. A trajectory-b…
For spin-polarized junctions of ferromagnetically contacting multiple conductive paths, such as ferromagnet (FM)/atomic wires/FM and FM/carbon nanotubes/FM junctions, we theoretically investigate spin-dependent transport to elucidate the intrinsic relation between the number of paths and conduction, and to enhance the magnetoresistance (MR) ratio. When many paths are randomly located between the two FMs, electronic wave interference between the FMs appears, and then the MR ratio increases with increasing number of paths. Furthermore, at each number of paths, the MR ratio for carbon nanotubes b…
