A straightforward argument shows that, by allowing counterfactual elements of physical reality, any arbitrary discrete finite-dimensional operator corresponds to an observable.
Group symmetric LOCC measurement for detecting maximally entangled state is considered. Usually, this type measurement has continuous-valued outcomes. However, any realizable measurement has finite-valued outcomes. This paper proposes discrete realizations of such a group symmetric LOCC measurement.
We report experimental implementation of discrete Fourier transformation(DFT) on a nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) quantum computer. Experimental results agree with theoretical results. Using the pulse sequences we introduced, DFT can be realized on any L-bit quantum number in principle.
Quantum walks are a promising framework for developing quantum algorithms and quantum simulations. They represent an important test case for the application of quantum computers. Here we present different forms of discrete-time quantum walks (DTQWs) and show their equivalence for physical realizations. Using an appropriate digital mapping of the position space on which a walker evolves to the multiqubit states of a quantum processor, we present different configurations of quantum circuits for the implementation of DTQWs in one-dimensional position space. We provide example circuits for a five-…
In this paper we propose the realization of a bosonic-fermionic interaction in the context of trapped ions whose effect upon the ion center of mass degrees of freedom is properly speaking a spatial inversion. The physical system and its features are accurately described and some applications are briefly discussed.
Optimal quantum machines can be implemented by linear projective operations. In the present work a general qubit symmetrization theory is presented by investigating the close links to the qubit purification process and to the programmable teleportation of any generic optimal anti-unitary map. In addition, the contextual realization of the N ->M cloning map and of the teleportation of the N->(M-N) universal NOT gate is analyzed by a novel and very general angular momentum theory. An extended set of experimental realizations by state symmetrization linear optical procedures is reported. These in…
We perform generalized measurements of a qubit by realizing the qubit as a coin in a photonic quantum walk and subjecting the walker to projective measurements. Our experimental technique can be used to realize photonically any rank-1 single-qubit positive operator-valued measure via constructing an appropriate interferometric quantum-walk network and then projectively measuring the walker's position at the final step.
We propose a scheme that can realize a class of positive-operator-valued measures (POVMs) by performing a sequence of projective measurements on the original system, in the sense that for an arbitrary input state the probability distribution of the measurement outcomes is faithfully reproduced. A necessary and sufficient condition for a POVM to be realizable in this way is also derived. In contrast to the canonical approach provided by Neumark's theorem, our method has the advantage of requiring no auxiliary system. Moreover, an arbitrary POVM can be realized by utilizing our protocol on an ex…
An integral of the Wigner function of a wavefunction |psi >, over some region S in classical phase space is identified as a (quasi) probability measure (QPM) of S, and it can be expressed by the |psi > average of an operator referred to as the region operator (RO). Transformation theory is developed which provides the RO for various phase space regions such as point, line, segment, disk and rectangle, and where all those ROs are shown to be interconnected by completely positive trace increasing maps. The latter are realized by means of unitary operators in Fock space extended by 2D vector spac…
Any lossless transformation on $n_{s}$ spatial and $n_{p}$ internal modes of light can be described by an $n_{s}n_{p}\times n_{s}n_{p}$ unitary matrix, but there is no known procedure to effect an arbitrary $n_{s}n_{p}\times n_{s}n_{p}$ unitary matrix on light in $n_{s}$ spatial and $n_{p}$ internal modes. We devise an algorithm to realize an arbitrary discrete unitary transformation on the combined spatial and internal degrees of freedom of light. Our realization uses beamsplitters and operations on internal modes to effect arbitrary linear transformations. The number of beamsplitters require…
We give an explicit characterization of the most general quasi-Hermitian operator H, the associated metric operators η_+, and η_+-pseudo-Hermitian operators acting in two-dimensional complex Euclidean space C^2. These operators represent the physical observables of a model whose Hamiltonian and Hilbert space are respectively H and C^2 endowed with the inner product defined by η_+. Our calculations allows for a direct demonstration of the fact that the choice of an irreducible family of observables fixes the metric operator up to a multiplicative factor.
We propose a new version of generalized probabilistic propositional logic, namely, discrete-continuous logic (DCL) in which every generalized proposition (GP) is represented as 2x2 nondiagonal positive matrix with unit trace. We demonstrate that on the set of propositions of this kind one can define both the discrete logical operations (connectives) such as negation and strong logical disjunction and in addition one parameter group of continuous operations (logical rotations). We prove that an arbitrary classical proposition (which in this logic is represented by the purely diagonal matrix) ca…
We propose a Lyapunov control design to achieve specific (or a family of) unitary time-evolution operators, i.e., quantum gates in the Schrödinger picture by tracking control. Two examples are presented. In the first, we illustrate how to realize the Hadamard gate in a single-qubit system, while in the second, the controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate is implemented in two-qubit systems with the Ising and Heisenberg interactions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the control can drive the time-evolution operator into the local equivalence class of the CNOT gate and the operator keeps in this class forever…
We propose the method for optical visualization of Bose-Hubbard model with two interacting bosons in the form of two-dimensional (2D) optical lattices consisting of optical waveguides, where the waveguides at the diagonal are characterized by different refractive index than others elsewhere, modeling the boson-boson interaction. We study the light intensity distribution function averaged over direction of propagation for both ordered and disordered cases, exploring sensitivity of the averaged picture with respect to the beam injection position. For our finite systems the resulting patterns rem…
We develop a new method of representation of quantum states in terms of the displaced number states. We call it representation, where is an amplitude of the base displaced states. In particular, representation was obtained for set of the displaced number states with different amplitude of the displacement, two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) and superposition of vacuum and single photon. The treatment is employed for building of elementary linear operators, in particular, two-qubit control-sign gate, Hadamard matrix between two two-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Main idea underlying the method is ext…
By utilization of three elementary vector operators as position, angular momentum and their cross product, a simple realization of gl(2,c) Lie algebra on sphere are constructed. The coherent states based on this algebra can then be constructed by standard manner.
The Fredkin three-bit gate is universal for computational logic, and is reversible. Classically, it is impossible to do universal computation using reversible two-bit gates only. Here we construct the Fredkin gate using a combination of six two-body reversible (quantum) operators.
We discuss real-space lattice models equivalent to gauge theories with a discrete non-Abelian gauge group. We construct the Hamiltonian formalism which is appropriate for their solid-state physics implementation and outline their basic properties. The unusual physics of these systems is due to local constraints on the degrees of freedom which are variables localized on the links of the lattice. We discuss two types of constraints that become equivalent after a duality transformation for Abelian theories but are qualitatively different for non-Abelian ones. We emphasize highly nontrivial topolo…
Novel dynamical phases that violate ergodicity have been a subject of extensive research in recent years. A periodically driven system is naively expected to lose all memory of its initial state due to thermalization, yet this can be avoided in the presence of many-body localization. A discrete time crystal represents a driven system whose local observables spontaneously break time translation symmetry and retain memory of the initial state indefinitely. Here we report the observation of a discrete time crystal on a chain consisting of 57 superconducting qubits on a state--of--the--art quantum…
We investigate spectral properties of Gesztesy-Šeba realizations D_{X,α} and D_{X,β} of the 1-D Dirac differential expression D with point interactions on a discrete set $X=\{x_n\}_{n=1}^\infty\subset \mathbb{R}.$ Here $α:= \{α_{n}\}_{n=1}^\infty$ and β:=\{β_{n}\}_{n=1}^\infty \subset\mathbb{R}. The Gesztesy-Šeba realizations $D_{X,α}$ and $D_{X,β}$ are the relativistic counterparts of the corresponding Schrödinger operators $H_{X,α}$ and $H_{X,β}$ with $δ$- and $δ'$-interactions, respectively. We define the minimal operator D_X as the direct sum of the minimal Dirac operators on the intervals…
Generalized parity (P), time-reversal (T), and charge-conjugation (C)operators were initially definedin the study of the pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We construct a concrete realization of these operators for Klein-Gordon fields and show that in this realization PT and C operators respectively correspond to the ordinary time-reversal and charge-grading operations. Furthermore, we present a complete description of the quantum mechanics of Klein-Gordon fields that is based on the construction of a Hilbert space with a relativistically invariant, positive-definite, and conserved inner product. …
We consider the effects of leakage on the ability to realize a discrete time crystal (DTC) in a semiconductor quantum dot linear array being operated as a chain of singlet-triplet (ST) qubits. This system realizes an Ising model with an effective applied magnetic field, plus additional terms that can cause leakage out of the computational subspace. We demonstrate that, in the absence of these leakage terms, this model theoretically realizes a DTC phase over a broad parameter regime for six and eight qubits, with a broader parameter range for the eight-qubit case. We then reintroduce the leakag…
The Letter by N. Y. Yao et. al. [1,2] presents three models for realizing a many-body localized discrete time-crystal (MBL DTC): a short-ranged model [1], its revised version [2], as well as a long-range model of a trapped ion experiment [1,3]. We show that none of these realize an MBL DTC for the parameter ranges quoted in Refs. [1,2]. The central phase diagrams in [1] therefore cannot be reproduced. The models show rapid decay of oscillations from generic initial states, in sharp contrast to the robust period doubling dynamics characteristic of an MBL DTC. Long-lived oscillations from specia…
Despite being forbidden in equilibrium, spontaneous breaking of time translation symmetry can occur in periodically driven, Floquet systems with discrete time-translation symmetry. The period of the resulting discrete time crystal is quantized to an integer multiple of the drive period, arising from a combination of collective synchronization and many body localization. Here, we consider a simple model for a one dimensional discrete time crystal which explicitly reveals the rigidity of the emergent oscillations as the drive is varied. We numerically map out its phase diagram and compute the pr…
This is a reply to the comment from Khemani, Moessner and Sondhi (KMS) [arXiv:2109.00551] on our manuscript [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 030401 (2017)]. The main new claim in KMS is that the short-ranged model does not support an MBL DTC phase. We show that, even for the parameter values they consider and the system sizes they study, the claim is an artifact of an unusual choice of range for the crucial plots. Conducting a standard finite-size scaling analysis on the same data strongly suggests that the system is in fact a many-body localized (MBL) discrete time crystal (DTC). Furthermore, we have c…
We consider the Schrödinger operator on the halfline with the potential $(m^2-\frac14)\frac1{x^2}$, often called the Bessel operator. We assume that $m$ is complex. We study the domains of various closed homogeneous realizations of the Bessel operator. In particular, we prove that the domain of its minimal realization for $|\Re(m)|<1$ and of its unique closed realization for $\Re(m)>1$ coincide with the minimal second order Sobolev space. On the other hand, if $\Re(m)=1$ the minimal second order Sobolev space is a subspace of infinite codimension of the domain of the unique closed Bessel opera…
We provide a review on the physics associated with phase transitions in which continuous scale invariance is broken into discrete scale invariance. The rich features of this transition characterized by the abrupt formation of a geometric ladder of eigenstates, low energy universality without fixed points, scale anomalies and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless scaling is described. The important role of this transition in various celebrated single and many body quantum systems is discussed along with recent experimental realizations. Particular focus is devoted to a recent realization in graphene.
Time crystals are classified as discrete or continuous depending on whether they spontaneously break discrete or continuous time translation symmetry. While discrete time crystals have been extensively studied in periodically driven systems since their recent discovery, the experimental realization of a continuous time crystal is still pending. Here, we report the observation of a limit cycle phase in a continuously pumped dissipative atom-cavity system, which is characterized by emergent oscillations in the intracavity photon number. We observe that the phase of this oscillation is random for…
Composite bosons, here called {\it quasibosons} (e.g. mesons, excitons, etc.), occur in various physical situations. Quasibosons differ from bosons or fermions as their creation and annihilation operators obey non-standard commutation relations, even for the "fermion+fermion" composites. Our aim is to realize the operator algebra of quasibosons composed of two fermions or two q-fermions (q-deformed fermions) by the respective operators of deformed oscillators, the widely studied objects. For this, the restrictions on quasiboson creation/annihilation operators and on the deformed oscillator (de…
Time crystals are quantum many-body systems which are able to self-organize their motion in a periodic way in time. Discrete time crystals have been experimentally demonstrated in spin systems. However, the first idea of spontaneous breaking of discrete time translation symmetry, in ultra-cold atoms bouncing on an oscillating mirror, still awaits experimental demonstration. Here, we perform a detailed analysis of the experimental conditions needed for the realization of such a discrete time crystal. Importantly, the considered system allows for the realization of dramatic breaking of discrete …
