The angle and temperature dependence of the photon scattering rate for Bose-stimulated atom recoil transitions between occupied states is compared to diffraction and incoherent Rayleigh scattering near the Bose-Einstein transition for an optically thin trap in the limit of large particle number, N. Each of these processes has a range of angles and temperatures for which it dominates over the others by a divergent factor as N->oo.
Bose statistics imply a substantial enhancement at small angles for light scattering off a cold, Bose gas. The enhancement increases dramatically at the Bose-Einstein temperature. This phenomenon could be utilized to eliminate almost entirely the heating of the gas by a weak probe light beam.
We propose an experiment for entangling two spatially separated Bose-Einstein condensates by Bragg scattering of light. When Bragg scattering in two condensates is stimulated by a common probe, the resulting quasiparticles in the two condensates get entangled due to quantum communication between the condensates via probe beam. The entanglement is shown to be significant and occurs in both number and quadrature phase variables. We present two methods of detecting the generated entanglement.
We show that it is possible to entangle three different many-particle states by Bragg spectroscopy with nonclassical light in a Bose condensate of weakly interacting atomic gases. Among these three states, two are of atoms corresponding to two opposite momentum side-modes of the condensate; and the other is of single-mode photons of the output probe beam. We demonstrate strong dependence of the multiparticle entanglement on the quantum statistics of the probe light. We present detailed results on entanglement keeping in view of the possible experimental situation.
We propose the use of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) to offer a fast high fidelity method of performing SU(2) rotations on spinor Bose Einstein condensates (BEC). Past demonstrations of BEC optical control suffer from difficulties arising from collective enhancement of spontaneous emission and inefficient two-photon transitions originating from selection rules. We present here a novel scheme which allows for arbitrary coherent rotations of two-component BECs while overcoming these issues. Numerical tests of the method show that for BECs of \ce{^{87}Rb} with up to $ 10^4 $ atoms an…
The studied model describes a particle that obeys a one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the potential of a double-well. Transitions between the two lowest self-trapped states of this system under the influence of the external time-dependent perturbation are studied in the two-mode approximation. If the perturbation dependence on time is harmonic with the frequency $ω$, then transitions between the states become possible if the amplitude of the perturbation $F$ exceeds some threshold value $F_c(ω)$; above the threshold motion of the system becomes chaotic. If the perturbation is a…
Taming quantum dynamical processes is the key to novel applications of quantum physics, e.g. in quantum information science. The control of light-matter interactions at the single-atom and single-photon level can be achieved in cavity quantum electrodynamics, in particular in the regime of strong coupling where atom and cavity form a single entity. In the optical domain, this requires permanent trapping and cooling of an atom in a micro-cavity. We have now realized three-dimensional cavity cooling and trapping for an orthogonal arrangement of cooling laser, trap laser and cavity vacuum. This l…
We analyze coherent two-color photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate, focusing on stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) in free-bound-bound transitions from atoms to molecules. This problem is of particular interest since STIRAP is predicted to be necessarily absent in the nondegenerate case [Javanainen and Mackie, Phys. Rev. A 58, R789 (1998)]. However, Bose-stimulation enhances the free-bound dipole matrix element for an atomic condensate, and photoassociative STIRAP turns out to be a viable mechanism for converting an atomic condensate to a molecular condensate with near-unit …
Stimulated Raman scattering of atoms with $Λ$-configuration of levels is a promising tool for transducing microwave photons to optical photons. We consider an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate whose large phase-space density highly amplifies the coupling to the microwave field. Due momentum transfer to the condensate, stimulated photon scattering can occur outside of the phase-matched direction, which can be used to separate the converted photons from the strong Raman readout pulse. Conversely, in the phase-matched direction, superradiant scattering due to bosonic enhancement leads to increased …
Robust stimulated Raman exact passages are requisite for controlling nonlinear quantum systems, with the wide applications ranging from ultracold molecules, non-linear optics to superchemistry. Inspired by shortcuts to adiabaticity, we propose the fast-forward scaling of stimulated Raman adiabatic processes with the nonlinearity involved, describing the transfer from an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate to a molecular one by controllable external fields. The fidelity and robustness of atom-molecule conversion are shown to surpass those of conventional adiabatic passages, assisted by fast-forward…
Collective two-color photoassociation of a freely-interacting 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate is theoretically examined, focusing on stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) from an atomic to a stable molecular condensate. In particular, Drummond et al. [Phys. Rev. A 65, 063619 (2002); cond-mat/0110578] have predicted that particle-particle interactions can limit the efficiency of collective atom-molecule STIRAP, and that optimizing the laser parameters can partially overcome this limitation. We suggest that the molecular conversion efficiency can be further improved by treating the initial c…
We obtain analytic solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with negative scattering length in highly asymmetric traps. We find that in these traps the Bose--Einstein condensates behave like quasiparticles and do not expand when the trapping in one direction is eliminated. The results can be applicable to the control of the motion of Bose--Einstein condensates.
In ultracold atoms settings, inelastic light scattering is a preeminent technique to reveal static and dynamic properties at nonzero momentum. In this work, we investigate an array of one-dimensional trapped Bose gases, by measuring both the energy and the momentum imparted to the system via light scattering experiments. The measurements are performed in the weak perturbation regime, where these two quantities - the energy and momentum transferred - are expected to be related to the dynamical structure factor of the system. We discuss this relation, with special attention to the role of in-tra…
We investigate dynamical stability and self-trapping for Bose-Einstein condensates in a symmetric double well. The relation between the quantum Fisher information and the stability of the fixed point is studied. We find that the quantum Fisher information displays a sharp transition as the fixed point evolving from stable to unstable regime. Moreover, the transition from Josephson oscillation to self-trapping is accompanied by an abrupt change of the quantum Fisher information.
We investigate theoretically an original route to achieve Bose-Einstein condensation using dark power-law laser traps. We propose to create such traps with two crossing blue-detuned Laguerre-Gaussian optical beams. Controlling their azimuthal order $\ell$ allows for the exploration of a multitude of power-law trapping situations in one, two and three dimensions, ranging from the usual harmonic trap to an almost square-well potential, in which a quasi-homogeneous Bose gas can be formed. The usual cigar-shaped and disk-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates obtained in a 1D or 2D harmonic trap take th…
Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a gas has now been achieved. Alkali atoms ($^{87}Rb$, $^{23}Na$ and $^{7}Li$) have been cooled to the point of condensation (temperature of 100 nK) using laser cooling and trapping, followed by magnetic trapping and evaporative cooling. This important experimental result has also renewed the interest on theoretical studies of BEC. In this contribution we discuss the statistical mechanics of the trapped BEC at zero temperature. In particular, we study the stability of the condensate by using a variational method with local and non-local interaction between th…
We have measured the 2-particle correlation function of atoms from a Bose--Einstein condensate participating in a superradiance process, which directly reflects the 2nd order coherence of the emitted light. We compare this correlation function with that of atoms undergoing stimulated emission. Whereas the stimulated process produces correlations resembling those of a coherent state, we find that superradiance, even in the presence of strong gain, shows a correlation function close to that of a thermal state, just as for ordinary spontaneous emission.
In this letter, atom optic techniques are proposed to control the excitation of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an atomic trap. We show that by employing the dipole potential induced by four highly detuned travelling-wave laser beams with appropriate phases and frequencies, one can coherently excite a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate composed of ultracold alkali atoms into a state rotating around the trap center. The connection to vortex states is discussed.
We show that the dynamics of phonons in a set of trapped ions interacting with lasers is described by a Bose-Hubbard model whose parameters can be externally adjusted. We investigate the possibility of observing several quantum many-body phenomena, including (quasi) Bose-Einstein condensation as well as a superfluid-Mott insulator quantum phase transition.
We give numerical estimates of various unstable stationary solutions of the Gross--Pitaevskii equation in an axially symmetric set up with a linear trapping potential along the symmetry axis, and a quadratic trapping along the radial direction. These represent topological coherent modes of Bose--Einstein condensates in a gravito optical surface trap (GOST). Despite their instability, we find that many of these solutions decay sufficiently slow, so that they could be realized experimentally.
We consider a strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Fermi mixture confined in a hard wall trap or a harmonic oscillator trap with a tunable $δ$-function barrier at the trap center. The mixture consists of 1D Bose gas with repulsive interactions and of 1D noninteracting spin-aligned Fermi gas, both species interacting through hard-core interactions. Using a generalized Bose-Fermi mapping, we calculated the reduced single-particle density matrix and the momentum distribution of the gas as a function of barrier strength and the parity of particle number. The secondary peaks in the moment…
Non-adiabatic interaction ramps are considered for trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. The deviation from adiabaticity is characterized through the heating or residual energy produced during the ramp. We find that the dependence of the heat on the ramp time is very sensitive to the ramp protocol. We explain features of this dependence through a single-parameter effective description based on the dynamics of the condensate size.
A method is proposed to design the time dependence of the trap frequency and achieve in a short time an adiabatic-like (frictionless) evolution of Bose-Einstein condensates governed by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Different cases depending on the effective dimension of the trap and the interaction regimes are considered. 2D traps are particularly suitable as the method can be applied without the need to impose any additional time-dependent change in the strength of the interatomic interaction or a Thomas-Fermi regime as it occurs for 1D and 3D traps.
Multistep Bose-Einstein condensation of an ideal Bose gas in anisotropic harmonic atom traps is studied. In the presence of strong anisotropy realized by the different trap frequency in each direction, finite size effect dictates a series of dimensional crossovers into lower-dimensional excitations. Two-step condensation and the dynamical reduction of the effective dimension can appear in three separate steps. When the multistep behavior occurs, the occupation number of atoms excited in each dimension is shown to behave similarly as a function of the temperature.
We report a novel approach for preparing a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $^{87}$Rb atoms using electro-pneumatically driven transfer of atoms into a Quadrupole-Ioffe magnetic trap (QUIC Trap). More than 5$\times$$10^{8}$ atoms from a Magneto-optical trap are loaded into a spherical quadrupole trap and then these atoms are transferred into an Ioffe trap by moving the Ioffe coil towards the center of the quadrupole coil, thereby, changing the distance between quadrupole trap center and the Ioffe coil. The transfer efficiency is more than 80 \%. This approach is different from a conventional …
The second-order coherence of photons scattered from a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate is found to be enhanced for the scattering angles that are either the same or symmetrical with respect to the direction of laser propagation. The enhancement occurs periodically with respect to the time interval between photons, and becomes less and less pronounced with increasing the strength of the interaction between atoms.
The problem of particle fluctuations in arbitrary nonuniform systems with Bose-Einstein condensate is considered. This includes the case of trapped Bose atoms. It is shown that the correct description of particle fluctuations for any nonuniform system of interacting atoms always results in thermodynamically normal fluctuations.
Photoassociation and the Feshbach resonance are, in principle, feasible means for creating a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate from an already-quantum-degenerate gas of atoms; however, mean-field shifts and irreversible decay place practical constraints on the efficient delivery of stable molecules using either mechanism alone. We therefore propose Feshbach-stimulated Raman photoproduction, i.e., a combination of magnetic and optical methods, as a viable means to collectively convert degenerate atoms into a stable molecular condensate with near-unit efficiency.
We report on the realization of a sodium Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) in a combined red-detuned optical dipole trap, formed by two beams crossing in a horizontal plane and a third, tightly focused dimple trap propagating vertically. We produce a BEC in three main steps: loading of the crossed dipole trap from laser-cooled atoms, an intermediate evaporative cooling stage which results in efficient loading of the auxiliary dimple trap, and a final evaporative cooling stage in the dimple trap. Our protocol is implemented in a compact setup and allows us to reach quantum degeneracy even with re…
The study of low density, ultracold atomic Fermi gases is a promising avenue to understand fermion superfluidity from first principles. One technique currently used to bring Fermi gases in the degenerate regime is sympathetic cooling through a reservoir made of an ultracold Bose gas. We discuss a proposal for trapping and cooling of two-species Fermi-Bose mixtures into optical dipole traps made from combinations of laser beams having two different wavelengths. In these bichromatic traps it is possible, by a proper choice of the relative laser powers, to selectively trap the two species in such…
We discuss cooling efficiency for different-species Fermi-Bose mixtures in magnetic traps. A better heat capacity matching between the two atomic species is achieved by a proper choice of the Bose cooler and the magnetically trappable hyperfine states of the mixture. When a partial spatial overlap between the two species is also taken into account, the deepest Fermi degeneracy is obtained for an optimal value of the trapping frequency ratio. This can be achieved by assisting the magnetic trap with a deconfining light beam, as shown in the case of fermionic 6Li mixed with 23Na, 87Rb, and 133Cs,…
