We derive a general limit on the fidelity of a quantum channel conveying an ensemble of pure states. Unlike previous results, this limit applies to arbitrary coding and decoding schemes, including nonunitary decoding. This establishes the converse of the quantum noiseless coding theorem for all such schemes.
We first derive for the general form of the fidelity for various bosonic channels. Thereby we give the fidelity of different quantum bosonic channel, possibly with product input and entangled input respectively, as examples. The properties of the fidelity are carefully examined.
We propose a fidelity measure for quantum channels in a straightforward analogy to the corresponding mixed-state fidelity of Jozsa. We describe properties of this fidelity measure and discuss some applications of it to quantum information science.
We study channel fidelity for the high-fidelity approach in the Knill-Laflamme-Milburn (KLM) scheme. We examine an optimal channel fidelity $f_{opt}$ and identify the corresponding KLM ancilla state. In the limit of large $n$, where $2n$ is the number of the ancilla qubits, we find $f_{opt}=1-{π^{2} \over 6n^{2}}+{2π^{2} \over 9n^{3}}$. We see that as $n$ increases $f_{opt}$ approaches to 1 slightly faster than $f=1-{2 \over n^{2}}$ which is the channel fidelity computed by Franson et. al. in the limit of large $n$. We also compute the channel fidelity for the ancilla state that gives a lower …
A noisy Gaussian channel is defined as a channel in which an input field mode is subjected to random Gaussian displacements in phase space. We introduce the quantum fidelity of a Gaussian channel for pure and mixed input states, and we derive a universal scaling law of the fidelity for pure initial states. We also find the maximum fidelity of a Gaussian channel over all input states. Quantum cloning and continuous-variable teleportation are presented as physical examples of Gaussian channels to which the fidelity results can be applied.
The fidelity function of quantum states have been widely used in quantum information science and frequently arises in the quantification of optimal performances for the estimation and distinguish of quantum states. A fidelity function on quantum channel is expected to have same wide applications in quantum information science. In this paper we propose a fidelity function on quantum channels and show that various distance measures on quantum channels can be obtained from this fidelity function, for example the Bures angle and the Bures distance can be extended to quantum channels via this fidel…
We consider the standard quantum teleportation protocol where a general bipartite state is used as entanglement resource. We use the entanglement fidelity to describe how well the standard quantum teleportation channel transmits quantum entanglement and give a simple expression for the entanglement fidelity when it is averaged on all input states.
We investigate quantum teleportation through noisy quantum channels by solving analytically and numerically a master equation in the Lindblad form. We calculate the fidelity as a function of decoherence rates and angles of a state to be teleported. It is found that the average fidelity and the range of states to be accurately teleported depend on types of noise acting on quantum channels. If the quantum channels is subject to isotropic noise, the average fidelity decays to 1/2, which is smaller than the best possible value 2/3 obtained only by the classical communication. On the other hand, if…
We analyze the fidelity of the generalized Pauli channels governed by memory kernel master equations. It is shown that, by appropriate engineering of parameters of the corresponding memory kernel, the quantum evolution with non-local noise can have higher fidelity than the corresponding purely Markovian evolution governed by the Markovian semigroup. Similar engineering can substantially influence the evolution of quantum entanglement, entropy, and quantum coherence.
Quantum channels depending on a number of classical control parameters are considered. Assuming the stochastic fluctuations of the control parameters in the small errors limit it is shown that the channel fidelity is equal to the average value of the channel purities calculated in the cases of the control errors presence and absence respectively. The result validity is demonstrated on two particular examples, namely, one-qubit quantum gates implemented in the framework of the ion trap setup and the single qubit anisotropic depolarizing quantum channel.
By adopting the concept of fidelity, we investigated efficiency of quantum state transfer with the XX chain as the quantum channel. Different from the previous works, we concentrated on effects of spin and magnetic impurity on fidelity of quantum state transfer. Our results revealed that the spin impurity cannot prevent one from implementing perfect transfer of an arbitrary one-qubit pure state across the spin channel, however, the presence of magnetic impurity or both spin and magnetic impurities may destroy the otherwise perfect spin channels.
Measurement induced nonlocality (MIN) captures global nonlocal effect of bipartite quantum state due to locally invariant projective measurements. In this paper, we propose a new version of MIN using fidelity induced metric, andthe same is calculated for pure and mixed states. For mixed state, the upper bound is obtained from eigenvalues of correlation matrix. Further, dynamics of MIN and fidelity based MIN under various noisy quantum channels show that they are more robust than entanglement.
We propose a method of optimally controlling state transfer through a noisy quantum channel (spin-chain). This process is treated as qubit state-transfer through a fermionic bath. We show that dynamical modulation of the boundary-qubits levels suffices to ensure fast and high-fidelity state transfer. This is achievable by dynamically optimizing the transmission spectrum of the channel. The resulting optimal control is robust against both static and fluctuating noise.
We associate to every quantum channel $T$ acting on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ a pair of Hamiltonian operators over the symmetric subspace of $\mathcal{H}^{\otimes 2}$. The expectation values of these Hamiltonians over symmetric product states give either the purity or the pure state fidelity of $T$. This allows us to analytically compute these measures for a wide class of channels, and to identify states that are optimal with respect to these measures.
To establish an entangled state of optimal fidelity between two distant observers when the available quantum channel is noisy, is a central problem in quantum information theory. We consider an instance of this problem for two-qubit systems when only a single use of the channel and local post-processing by trace preserving operations are allowed. We show that the optimal fidelity is obtained only when part of an appropriate non-maximally entangled state is transmitted through the channel. The entanglement of this state can be vanishingly small when the channel becomes very noisy. Moreover, in …
We provide new results for computing and comparing the quantum gate fidelity of quantum channels via their Choi matrices. We extend recent work that showed there exist non-dual pairs of quantum channels with equal gate fidelity by providing an explicit characterization of all such channels. We use our characterization to show that when the dimension is 2 (or 3, under slightly stronger hypotheses), the gate fidelity of two channels is equal if and only if their difference equals the difference of some unital map and its dual -- a fact that has been shown to be false when the dimension is 4 or l…
We employ the technique of weak measurement in order to enable preservation of teleportation fidelity for two-qubit noisy channels. We consider one or both qubits of a maximally entangled state to undergo amplitude damping, and show that the application of weak measurement and a subsequent reverse operation could lead to a fidelity greater than $2/3$ for any value of the decoherence parameter. The success probability of the protocol decreases with the strength of weak measurement, and is lower when both the qubits are affected by decoherence. Finally, our protocol is shown to work for the Wern…
In quantum error correction, it is an important assumption that errors on different qubits are independent. In our previous work [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 92}, 052320 (2015)], the generality of the concatenated five-qubit code has been investgated when noises of the principal system and the auxiliary environment are assumed to be the same. In the error correction with concatenated code, tiny differences (in fidelity or independent errors) between initial quantum channels may introduce different effective channels in the next level, and therefore, it is necessary to study a meaningful question: Does f…

We analyze the performance of quantum teleportation in terms of average fidelity and fidelity deviation. The average fidelity is defined as the average value of the fidelities over all possible input states and the fidelity deviation is their standard deviation, which is referred to as a concept of fluctuation or universality. In the analysis, we find the condition to optimize both measures under a noisy quantum channel---we here consider the so-called Werner channel. To characterize our results, we introduce a two-dimensional space defined by the aforementioned measures, in which the performa…
Protocols for discriminating between a pair of channels or for estimating a channel parameter can often be aided by adaptivity or by entanglement between the probe states. This can make it difficult to bound the best possible performance for such protocols. In this paper, we introduce a quantity that we call the relative fidelity of a given pair of channels and a pair of input states to those channels. Constraining the allowed input states to all pairs of states whose fidelity is greater than some minimum "input fidelity" and minimising this quantity over the valid pairs of states, we get the …
We introduce witnesses for the average channel fidelity between a known target gate and an arbitrary unknown channel, for continuous-variable (CV) systems. These are observables whose expectation value yields a tight lower bound to the average channel fidelity in question, thus constituting a practical tool for certification of experimental CV gates. Our framework applies to a broad class of target gates. Here, we focus on three specific types of targets: multi-mode Gaussian unitary channels, single-mode coherent state amplifiers, and the single-mode (non-Gaussian) cubic phase gate, which is a…
Quantum-state transfer with fidelity higher than 0.99 can be achieved in the ballistic regime of an arbitrarily long one-dimensional chain with uniform nearest-neighbor interaction, except for the two pairs of mirror symmetric extremal bonds, say x (first and last) and y (second and last-but-one). These have to be roughly tuned to suitable values x ~ 2 N^{-1/3} and y ~ 2^{3/4} N^{-1/6}, N being the chain length. The general framework can describe the end-to-end response in different models, such as fermion or boson hopping models and XX spin chains.
Remote state preparation (RSP) is a quantum information protocol which allows preparing a quantum state at a distant location with the help of a preshared nonclassical resource state and a classical channel. The efficiency of successfully doing this task can be represented by the RSP-fidelity of the resource state. In this paper, we study the influence on the RSP-fidelity by applying certain local operations on the resource state. We prove that RSP-fidelity does not increase for any unital local operation. However, for nonunital local operation, such as local amplitude damping channel, we find…
In the shallow sub-threshold regime, fault-tolerant quantum computation requires a tremendous amount of qubits. In this paper, we study the error correction in the deep sub-threshold regime. We estimate the physical error rate for achieving the logical error rates of $10^{-6} - 10^{-15}$ using few-qubit codes, i.e. short repetition codes, small surface codes and the Steane code. Error correction circuits that are efficient for biased error channels are identified. Using the Steane code, when error channels are biased with a ratio of $10^{-3}$, the logical error rate of $10^{-15}$ can be achiev…
We investigate quantum teleportation through dissipative channels and calculate teleportation fidelity as a function of damping rates. It is found that the average fidelity of teleportation and the range of states to be teleported depend on the type and rate of the damping in the channel. Using the fully entangled fraction, we derive two bounds on the damping rates of the channels: one is to beat the classical limit and the second is to guarantee the non-existence of any other copy with better fidelity. Effect of the initially distributed maximally entangled state on the process is presented; …
We consider a scenario where a party, say, Alice prepares a pure two-qubit (either maximally entangled or non-maximally entangled) state and sends one half of this state to another distant party, say, Bob through a qubit (either unital or non-unital) channel. Finally, the shared state is used as a teleportation channel. In this scenario, we focus on characterizing the set of qubit channels with respect to the final state's efficacy as a resource of quantum teleportation (QT) in terms of maximal average fidelity and fidelity deviation (fluctuation in fidelity values over the input states). Impo…
We study quantum-state transfer in $XX$ spin-$1/2$ chains where both communicating spins are weakly coupled to a channel featuring disordered on-site magnetic fields. Fluctuations are modelled by long-range correlated sequences with self-similar profile obeying a power-law spectrum. We show that the channel is able to perform an almost perfect quantum-state transfer in most of the samples even in the presence of significant amounts of disorder provided the degree of those correlations is strong enough. In that case, we also show that the lack of mirror symmetry does not affect much the likelih…
We consider the asymptotic regularization of the maximal fidelity for the generalized Pauli channels, which is a problem similar to the classical channel capacity. In particular, we find the formulas for the extremal channel fidelities and the maximal output $\infty$-norm. For wide classes of channels, we show that these quantities are multiplicative. Finally, we find the regularized maximal fidelity for the channels satisfying the time-local master eqeuations.
We aim to devise feasible, efficient verification schemes for bosonic channels. To this end, we construct an average-fidelity witness that yields a tight lower bound for average fidelity plus a general framework for verifying optimal quantum channels. For both multi-mode unitary Gaussian channels and single-mode amplification channels, we present experimentally feasible average-fidelity witnesses and reliable verification schemes, for which sample complexity scales polynomially with respect to all channel specification parameters. Our verification scheme provides an approach to benchmark the p…
A protocol for transferring an unknown single qubit state has quantum features when the average fidelity of the outcomes is greater than 2/3. We use the probabilistic and unambiguous state extraction scheme as a mechanism to redistribute the fidelity in the outcome of the teleportation when the process is performed with an X-state as a noisy quantum channel. We show that the entanglement of the channel is necessary but not sufficient in order for the total average fidelity f_X to display quantum features, i.e., we find a threshold C_X for the concurrence of the channel. If the mechanism for re…
For a given ensemble of input and target states, the classical fidelity threshold (CFT) is the maximum valve of the averaged fidelity, and it can be achieved with a measure-and-prepare operation. This quantity can be employed to verify whether the channel is in the quantum domain or not. In a recent work by Chiribella and Xie [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 213601 (2013)], it was showed that all the information about the input and target states can be equivalently described by an entangled state and an effective entanglement-braking (EB) channel, and the CFTs can be defined with the Choi matrix o…
We investigate two-party quantum teleportation through noisy channels for multi-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states and find which state loses less quantum information in the process. The dynamics of states is described by the master equation with the noisy channels that lead to the quantum channels to be mixed states. We analytically solve the Lindblad equation for $n$-qubit GHZ states $n\in\{4,5,6\}$ where Lindblad operators correspond to the Pauli matrices and describe the decoherence of states. Using the average fidelity we show that 3GHZ state is more robust than $n$GHZ state u…
A theoretical quantum teleportation protocal is suggested to teleport accelerated and non-accelerated information over different classes of accelerated quantum channels. For the accelerated information, it is shown that the fidelity of the teleported state increases as the entanglement of the initial quantum channel increases. However as the difference between the accelerated channel and the accelerated information decreases the fidelity increases. The fidelity of the non accelerated information increases as the entanglement of the initial quantum channel increases, while the accelerations of …
Three-qubit mixed states are used as a channel for controlled quantum teleportation (CQT) of single-qubit states. The connection between different channel parameters to achieve maximum controlled teleportation fidelity is investigated. We show that for a given multipartite entanglement and mixedness, a class of non-maximally entangled mixed $X$ states ($X-$NMEMS) achieves optimum controlled quantum teleportation fidelity, interestingly a class of maximally entangled mixed $X$ states ($X-$MEMS) fails to do so. This demonstrates, for a given spectrum and mixedness, that $X-$MEMS are not sufficie…
A set of schemes for secure quantum communication are analyzed under the influence of non-Markovian channels. By comparing with the corresponding Markovian cases, it is seen that the average fidelity in all these schemes can be maintained for relatively longer periods of time. The effects of non-Markovian noise on a number of facets of quantum cryptography, such as quantum secure direct communication, deterministic secure quantum communication and their controlled counterparts, quantum dialogue, quantum key distribution, quantum key agreement, etc., have been extensively investigated. Specific…
Quantum entanglement enables tasks not possible in classical physics. Many quantum communication protocols require the distribution of entangled states between distant parties. Here we experimentally demonstrate the successful transmission of an entangled photon pair over a 144 km free-space link. The received entangled states have excellent, noise-limited fidelity, even though they are exposed to extreme attenuation dominated by turbulent atmospheric effects. The total channel loss of 64 dB corresponds to the estimated attenuation regime for a two-photon satellite quantum communication scenar…
The protocol of the teleportation of an arbitrary unknown one-qubit state is investigated when the quantum channel is subject to the decoherence from the non-Markovian environments with the memory effects. The quality of the teleportation measured by the average fidelity and minimal fidelity can be enhanced in the non-Markovian channel. The memory effects give rise to the revival of the fidelity which is better than that obtained by the Markovian channel.
Quantum communication is one of the hot topics in quantum computing, where teleportation of a quantum state has a slight edge and gained significant attention from researchers. A large number of teleportation schemes have already been introduced so far. Here, we compare the teleportation of a single qubit message among different entangled channels such as the two-qubit Bell channel, three-qubit GHZ channel, two- and three-qubit cluster states, the highly entangled five-qubit Brown \emph{et al.} state and the six-qubit Borras \emph{et al.} state. We calculate and compare the quantum costs in ea…
We consider two qubit teleportation via quantum channel affected by amplitude damping noise. Addressing the same problem, X. Hu, Y. Gu, Q. Gong and G. Guo [Phys. Rev. A 81, 054302, (2010)] recently showed that in presence of noise, subjecting more qubits in quantum channel to amplitude damping can increase the fidelity of teleportation protocol. However, in this paper, by making some adjustments on quantum channel, we obtain teleportation fidelity which is even higher than one in the case of X. Hu et al. Moreover, our strategy is simpler than quantum distillation and compared to using weak mea…
The Continuous-Variable (CV) quantum state of light allows for the teleportation of a Discrete-Variable (DV) photonic qubit. Such an operation is useful in the realm of hybrid quantum networks. However, it is known that the teleportation of a DV qubit via a Gaussian CV resource channel is severely limited under channel loss, with a teleportation fidelity beyond the classical limit unattainable for losses exceeding a small threshold of 0.5 dB. In this work, we present a new non-deterministic teleportation protocol that combines a Gaussian CV resource channel with a modified form of the Bell Sta…
In the theory of quantum transmission of information the concept of fidelity plays a fundamental role. An important class of channels, which can be experimentally realized in quantum optics, is that of Gaussian quantum channels. In this work we present a general formula for fidelity in the case of two arbitrary Gaussian states. From this formula one can get a previous result (H. Scutaru, J. Phys. A: Mat. Gen {\bf 31}, 3659 (1998)), for the case of a single mode; or, one can apply it to obtain a closed compact expression for multimode thermal states.
We show the equivalence of two different notions of quantum channel capacity: that which uses the entanglement fidelity as its criterion of success in transmission, and that which uses the minimum fidelity of pure states in a subspace of the input Hilbert space as its criterion. As a corollary, any source with entropy rate less than the capacity may be transmitted with high entanglement fidelity. We also show that a restricted class of encodings is sufficient to transmit any quantum source which may be transmitted on a given channel. This enables us to simplify a known upper bound for the chan…
We study quantum communication in the presence of adversarial noise. In this setting, communicating with perfect fidelity requires using a quantum code of bounded minimum distance, for which the best known rates are given by the quantum Gilbert-Varshamov (QGV) bound. By asking only for arbitrarily high fidelity and allowing the sender and reciever to use a secret key with length logarithmic in the number of qubits sent, we achieve a dramatic improvement over the QGV rates. In fact, we find protocols that achieve arbitrarily high fidelity at noise levels for which perfect fidelity is impossible…
An arbitrary qubit can be transmitted through a spin chain by perturbatively coupling both communicating parties to it. Those so-called weak-coupling models rely on effective Rabi oscillations between them, yielding nearly maximum fidelity while offering great resilience against disorder with the cost of having long transfer times. Considering this framework, here we address a 1D non-symmetric channel connecting two spins, one placed at each end of it. Given any pattern of nearest-neighbor coupling strengths, we obtain an analytical expression that accounts for the effective long-range interac…
As a toy model for the capacity problem in quantum information theory we investigate finite and asymptotic regularizations of the maximum pure-state input-output fidelity $F(\cal N$) of a general quantum channel $\cal N$. We show that the asymptotic regularization $\tilde F(\cal N$) is lower bounded by the maximum output $\infty$-norm $ν_\infty(\cal N)$ of the channel. For $\cal N$ being a Pauli channel we find that both quantities are equal.
We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the approximate correctability of a quantum code, generalizing the Knill-Laflamme conditions for exact error correction. Our measure of success of the recovery operation is the worst-case entanglement fidelity of the overall process. We show that the optimal recovery fidelity can be predicted exactly from a dual optimization problem on the environment causing the noise. We use this result to obtain an easy-to-calculate estimate of the optimal recovery fidelity as well as a way of constructing a class of near-optimal recovery channels that work …
By exhibiting a violation of a novel form of the Bell-CHSH inequality, Zukowski has recently established that the quantum correlations exploited in the standard perfect teleportation protocol cannot be recovered by any local hidden variables model. Allowing the quantum channel state in the protocol to be given by any density operator of two spin-1/2 particles, we show that a violation of a generalized form of Zukowski's teleportation inequality can only occur if the channel state, considered by itself, violates a Bell-CHSH inequality. On the other hand, although it is sufficient for a teleport…
There is currently a significant need for robust and efficient methods for characterizing quantum devices. While there has been significant progress in this direction, there remains a crucial need to precisely determine the strength and type of errors on individual gate operations, in order to assess and improve control as well as reliably bound the total error in a quantum circuit given some partial information about the errors on the components. In this work, we first provide an optimal bound on the total fidelity of a circuit in terms of component fidelities, which can be efficiently experi…
