We assert that state reduction processes in different types of photodetection experiments are described by using different kinds of ladder operators. A special model of discrete photodetection is developed by the use of superoperators which are based on the Susskind-Glogower raising and lowering operators.

Direct sampling of the Susskind-Glogower phase distributions

Coarse-grained phase distributions are introduced that approximate to the Susskind--Glogower cosine and sine phase distributions. The integral relations between the phase distributions and the phase-parametrized field-strength distributions observable in balanced homodyning are derived and the integral kernels are analyzed. Nonlinear coherent states for the Susskind-Glogower operators

We construct nonlinear coherent states for the Susskind-Glogower operators by the application of the displacement operator on the vacuum state. We also construct nonlinear coherent states as eigenfunctions of a Hamiltonian constructed with the Susskind-Glogower operators. We generalize the solution of the eigen- function problem to an arbitrary |mi initial condition. The exact solution of generalized Dicke models via Susskind-Glogower operators

We show a right unitary transformation approach based on Susskind-Glogower operators that diagonalizes a generalized Dicke Hamiltonian in the field basis and delivers a tridiagonal Hamiltonian in the Dicke basis. This tridiagonal Hamiltonian is diagonalized by a set of orthogonal polynomials satisfying a three-term recurrence relation. Solution to the Landau-Zener problem via Susskind-Glogower operators

We show that, by means of a right-unitary transformation, the fully quantized Landau-Zener Hamiltonian in the weak-coupling regime may be solved by using known solutions from the standard Landau-Zener problem. In the strong-coupling regime, where the rotating wave approximation is not valid, we show that the quantized Landau-Zener Hamiltonian may be diagonalized in the atomic basis by means of a unitary transformation; hence allowing numerical solutions for the few photons regime via truncation.

A phase operator for photons

We define a unitary phase operator for photons in a single momentum mode. The operator acts on a Hilbert space with basis consisting of all number states in both polarizations. The Susskind Glogower operator, ${\hat{E}} = e^{i \hatϕ}$, thus defined is unitary and acts as a true ladder operator over all the states. It satisfies the commutation relation $[{\hat{E}}, {\hat{n}}] = {\hat{E}}$; consequently, the phase $\hatϕ$ satisfies the canonical commutation relation $[{\hat{n}}, {\hatϕ}] = i$.
