We give an explicit comparison of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of XY Hamiltonians of an open linear spin-1/2 chain and a closed spin-1/2 ring with periodic in space coefficients. It is shown that the Hamiltonian of a k-periodic chain with nk-1 sites has (n-1)k multiplicity one eigenvalues which are eigenvalues of multiplicity two for a Hamiltonian of a k-periodic ring with 2kn sites. For the corresponding eigenvectors in the case of a chain an explicit expression in terms of eigenvectors of the ring Hamiltonian is given. The remaining k-1 eigenvalues of the chain Hamiltonian and 2k eigenvalues of the ring Hamiltonian, together with the corresponding eigenvectors, are responsible for the difference between chain and ring models which displays in the boundary effects at the ends of the chain and translation invariance of the periodic ring.

We construct an explicit matrix product ansatz for the steady state of a boundary driven $XY\!Z$ spin-$\tfrac{1}{2}$ chain for arbitrary local polarizing channels at the chain's ends. The ansatz, where the Lax operators are written explicitly in terms of infinite-dimensional bidiagonal (triangular) site-dependent matrices, becomes exact either in the (Zeno) limit of infinite dissipation strength, or thermodynamic limit of infinite chain length. The solution is based on an extension of the newly discovered family of separable eigenstates of the model.
We demonstrate that the exact non-equilibrium steady state of the one-dimensional Heisenberg XXZ spin chain driven by boundary Lindblad operators can be constructed explicitly with a matrix product ansatz for the non-equilibrium density matrix where the matrices satisfy a {\it quadratic algebra}. This algebra turns out to be related to the quantum algebra $U_q[SU(2)]$. Coherent state techniques are introduced for the exact solution of the isotropic Heisenberg chain with and without quantum boundary fields and Lindblad terms that correspond to two different completely polarized boundary states.…
We investigate an open $XYZ$ spin $1/2$ chain driven out of equilibrium by boundary reservoirs targeting different spin orientations, aligned along the principal axes of anisotropy. We show that by tuning local magnetic fields, applied to spins at sites near the boundaries, one can change any nonequilibrium steady state to a fully uncorrelated Gibbsian state at infinite temperature. This phenomenon occurs for strong boundary coupling and on a critical manifold in the space of the fields amplitudes. The structure of this manifold depends on the anisotropy degree of the model and on the parity o…
In a recent work (arXiv:2207.01954), we showed that a uniformly coupled chain could be symmetrically extended by engineered spin chains in such a way that we could choose part of the spectrum of the overall system. When combined with an encoding that avoids the uncontrolled eigenvalues, this resulted in the possibility of achieving a range of tasks such as perfect quantum state transfer. In this paper, we apply the same strategy to a much broader range of initial systems - arbitrary chains, and even coupled networks of spins - while providing guarantees on the existence of solutions.
We investigate the low-lying excited states of the spin J ferromagnetic XXZ chain with Ising anisotropy Delta and kink boundary conditions. Since the third component of the total magnetization, M, is conserved, it is meaningful to study the spectrum for each fixed value of M. We prove that for J>= 3/2 the lowest excited eigenvalues are separated by a gap from the rest of the spectrum, uniformly in the length of the chain. In the thermodynamic limit, this means that there are a positive number of excitations above the ground state and below the essential spectrum.
We consider an open isotropic Heisenberg quantum spin chain, coupled at the ends to boundary reservoirs polarized in different directions, which sets up a twisting gradient across the chain. Using a matrix product ansatz, we calculate the exact magnetization profiles and magnetization currents in the nonequilibrium steady steady state of a chain with N sites. The magnetization profiles are harmonic functions with a frequency proportional to the twisting angle θ. The currents of the magnetization components lying in the twisting plane and in the orthogonal direction behave qualitatively differe…
We consider correlation functions of the form <vac|O|vac>', where |vac> is the vacuum eigenstate of an infinite antiferromagnetic XXZ chain, |vac>' is the vacuum eigenstate of an infinite XXZ chain which is split in two, and O is a local operator. The Hamiltonian of the split chain has no coupling between sites 1 and 0 and has a staggered magnetic field at these two sites; it arises from a tensor product of left and right boundary transfer matrices. We find a simple, exact expression for <vac|vac>' and an exact integral expression for general <vac|O|vac>' using the vertex operator approach. We…
We demonstrate an implementation scheme for constructing quantum gates using unitary evolutions of the one-dimensional spin-J ferromagnetic XXZ chain. We present numerical results based on simulations of the chain using the time-dependent DMRG method and techniques from optimal control theory. Using only a few control parameters, we find that it is possible to implement one- and two-qubit gates on a system of spin-3/2 XXZ chains, such as Not, Hadamard, Pi-8, Phase, and C-Not, with fidelity levels exceeding 99%.
The ability to transfer quantum information from one location to another with high fidelity is of central importance to quantum information science. Unfortunately for the simplest system of a uniform chain (a spin chain or a particle in a one-dimensional lattice), the state transfer time grows exponentially in the chain length $N$ at fixed fidelity. In this work we show that the addition of an impurity near each endpoint, coupled to the uniform chain with strength $w$, is sufficient to ensure efficient and high-fidelity state transfer. An eigenstate localized in the vicinity of the impurity ca…
We study the spin transport in the quantum Heisenberg spin chain subject to boundary magnetic fields and driven out of equilibrium by Lindblad dissipators. An exact solution is given in terms of matrix product states, which allows us to calculate exactly the spin current for any chain size. It is found that the system undergoes a discontinuous spin-valve-like quantum phase transition from ballistic to sub-diffusive spin current, depending on the value of the boundary fields. Thus, the chain behaves as an extremely sensitive magnonic logic gate operating with the boundary fields as the base ele…
We study the waiting-time distributions (WTDs) of quantum chains coupled to two Lindblad baths at each end. Our focus is on free fermion chains, where we derive closed-form expressions in terms of single-particle matrices, allowing one to study arbitrarily large chain sizes. In doing so, we also derive formulas for 2-point correlation functions involving non-Hermitian propagators.
A simple Mathematica code based on the differential realization of hard-core boson operators for finding exact solutions of the periodic-N spin-1/2 systems with or beyond nearest neighbor interactions is proposed, which can easily be used to study general spin-1/2 interaction systems. As an example, The code is applied to study XXX spin-1/2 chain with nearest neighbor interaction in a uniform transverse field. It shows that there are [N/2] level-crossing points in the ground state, where N is the periodic number of the system and [x] stands for the integer part of x, when the interaction stren…
Quantum state transfer in the presence of noise is one of the main challenges in building quantum computers. We compare the quantum state transfer properties for two classes of qubit chains under the influence of static randomness. In fully engineered chains all nearest-neighbor couplings are tuned in such a way that a single-qubit state can be transferred perfectly between the ends of the chain, while in boundary-controlled chains only the two couplings between the transmitting and receiving qubits and the remainder of the chain can be optimized. We study how the noise in the couplings affect…
A recent numerical study of short chains found near-perfect quantum state transfer between the boundary sites of a spin-1/2 XX chain if a sufficiently strong magnetic field acts on these sites. We show that the phenomenon is based on a pair of states strongly localized at the boundaries of the system and provide a simple quantitative analytical explanation.
We analyze the entanglement properties of spins (qubits) attached to the boundary of spin chains near quantum critical points, or to dissipative environments, near a boundary critical point, such as Kondo-like systems or the dissipative two level system. In the first case, we show that the properties of the entanglement are significantly different from those for bulk spins. The influence of the proximity to a transition is less marked at the boundary. In the second case, our results indicate that the entanglement changes abruptly at the point where coherent quantum oscillations cease to exist.…
We study transfer of a quantum state through XX spin chains with static imperfections. We combine the two standard approaches for state transfer based on (i) modulated couplings between neighboring spins throughout the spin chain and (ii) weak coupling of the outermost spins to an unmodulated spin chain. The combined approach allows us to design spin chains with modulated couplings and localized boundary states, permitting high-fidelity state transfer in the presence of random static imperfections of the couplings. The modulated couplings are explicitly obtained from an exact algorithm using t…
We study the quantum Ising chain with boundary dephasing. By doubling the Hilbert space, the model is mapped to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with imaginary chemical potential at the edges. We show analytically and numerically that the Liouvillian gap, i.e., the inverse relaxation time of the model, scales with the system size $ N $ as $ N^{-3} $.
By means of a variational calculation using Matrix Product States with periodic boundary conditions, we accurately determine the extension of the spin-supersolid phase predicted to exist in the spin-1 anisotropic Heisenberg chain. We compute both the structure factor and the superfluid stiffness, and extract the critical exponents of the supersolid-to-solid phase transition.
We propose a new fast scalable method for achieving a two-qubit entangling gate between arbitrary distant qubits in a network by exploiting dispersionless propagation in uniform chains. This is achieved dynamically by switching on a strong interaction between the qubits and a bus formed by a non-engineered chain of interacting qubits. The quality of the gate scales very efficiently with qubit separations. Surprisingly, a sudden switching of the coupling is not necessary and our gate mechanism is not altered by a possibly gradual switching. The bus is also naturally reset to its initial state m…
A dissipative method that allows to access family of phantom Bethe-states (PBS) of boundary driven XXZ spin chains, is introduced. The method consists in coupling the ends of the open spin chain to suitable dissipative magnetic baths to force the edge spins to satisfy specific boundary conditions necessary for the PBS existence. Cumulative monotonous depopulation of the non-chiral components of the density matrix with growing dissipation amplitude is analogous to the depopulation of high-energy states in response to thermal cooling. Compared to generic states, PBS have strong chirality, nontri…
The effects of boundary impurities on the entanglement entropy in an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg opened spin-$1/2$ chain are investigated. The method of density-matrix renormalization-group is used to obtain the bipartite entanglement. The entropy increases when the length of the subsystem increases. It will approach to a constant when system length is very large. With the same impurity interaction, qutrit impurities of spin-$1$ can increase the entanglement entropy.
Boundary driven quantum master equation for a general inhomogeneous (non-integrable) anisotropic Heisenberg spin $1/2$ chain, or an equivalent nearest neighbor interacting spinless fermion chain, is considered in the presence of a strong external field $f$. We present an exact closed form expression for large $f$ asymptotics of the current in the presence of pure incoherent source and sink dissipation at the boundaries. In application we demonstrate arbitrary large current rectification in the presence of interaction.
We consider the Renyi entanglement entropies in the one-dimensional XX spin-chains with open boundary conditions in the presence of a magnetic field. In the case of a semi-infinite system and a block starting from the boundary, we derive rigorously the asymptotic behavior for large block sizes on the basis of a recent mathematical theorem for the determinant of Toeplitz plus Hankel matrices. We conjecture a generalized Fisher-Hartwig form for the corrections to the asymptotic behavior of this determinant that allows the exact characterization of the corrections to the scaling at order o(1/l) f…
