Using the standard Hamiltonian of the BCS theory, we show that in an ensemble of interacting fermions with the spin 1/2 there exist coherent states $|NC>$, which nullify the Hamiltonian of the interparticle interaction (scattering). These states have an analogy with the well-known in quantum optics the coherent population trapping (CPT) effect. The structure of these CPT-like states corresponds to Cooper pairs with the total spin $S$=1. The found states have a huge degree of degeneracy and carry a macroscopic magnetic moment, that allows us to construct a new model of the magnetism connected with the delocalized electrons in metals (conductors). A principal possibility to apply the obtained results to the superfluid $^3$He is also demonstrated.
We describe a general technique that allows for an ideal transfer of quantum correlations between light fields and metastable states of matter. The technique is based on trapping quantum states of photons in coherently driven atomic media, in which the group velocity is adiabatically reduced to zero. We discuss possible applications such as quantum state memories, generation of squeezed atomic states, preparation of entangled atomic ensembles and quantum information processing.
We report the development of quantum microscopic theory of quasi-resonant dipole-dipole interaction in the ensembles of impurity atoms imbedded into transparent dielectric and located into Fabry-Perot cavity. On the basis of the general approach we study the simultaneous influence of the cavity and resonant dipole-dipole interaction on the shape of the line of atomic transition as well as on light trapping in dense impurity ensembles. We analyze this influence depending on the size of the ensemble, its density, as well as on r.m.s. deviation of the transition frequency shifts caused by the sym…
We present a detailed theoretical description of the generation of stationary light pulses by standing wave electromagnetically induced transparency in media comprised of stationary atoms. We show that, contrary to thermal gas media, the achievable storage times are limited only by the ground state dephasing rate of the atoms, making such media ideally suited for nonlinear optical interactions between stored pulses. Furthermore, we find significant quantitative and qualitative differences between the two types of media, which are important for quantum information processing schemes involving s…
The stationary light pulse (SLP) refers to a zero-group-velocity optical pulse in an atomic ensemble prepared by two counter-propagating driving fields. Despite the uniqueness of an optical pulse trapped within an atomic medium without a cavity, observations of SLP so far have been limited to trapping a single optical pulse due to the stringent SLP phase-matching condition, and this has severely hindered the development of SLP-based applications. In this paper, we first show theoretically that the SLP process in fact supports two phase-matching conditions and we then utilize the result to expe…
Divacancy defects in silicon carbide have long-lived electronic spin states and sharp optical transitions, with properties that are similar to the nitrogen-vacancy defect in diamond. We report experiments on 4H-SiC that investigate all-optical addressing of spin states with the zero-phonon-line transitions. Our magneto-spectroscopy results identify the spin $S=1$ structure of the ground and excited state, and a role for decay via intersystem crossing. We use these results for demonstrating coherent population trapping of spin states with divacancy ensembles that have particular orientations in…
On the basis of a quantum microscopic approach we study the cooperative effects induced by the dipole-dipole interaction in an ensemble of point-like impurity centers located near a charged perfectly conducting surface. We analyze the simultaneous influence of the modified spatial structure of field modes near the conductive surface and the electric field on the transition spectrum of an excited atom inside an ensemble and on the radiation trapping. We show that the electric field modifies the cooperative Lamb shift, as well as the character of sub- and superradiant decay. We also demonstrate …
Atoms trapped in the evanescent field around a nanofiber experience strong coupling to the light guided in the fiber mode. However, due to the intrinsically strong positional dependence of the coupling, thermal motion of the ensemble limits the use of nanofiber trapped atoms for some quantum tasks. We investigate the thermal dynamics of such an ensemble by using short light pulses to make a spatially inhomogeneous population transfer between atomic states. As we monitor the wave packet of atoms created by this scheme, we find a damped oscillatory behavior which we attribute to sloshing and dis…
Efficient photon-photon interaction is one of the key elements for realizing quantum information processing. The interaction, however, must often be mediated through an atomic medium due to the bosonic nature of photons, and the interaction time, which is critically linked to the efficiency, depends on the properties of the atom-photon interaction. While the electromagnetically induced transparency effect does offer the possibility of photonic quantum memory, it does not enhance the interaction time as it fully maps the photonic state to an atomic state. The stationary light pulse (SLP) effect…
The proposal for quantum computing with rare-earth-ion qubits in inorganic crystals makes use of the inhomogeneous broadening of optical transitions in the ions to associate individual qubits with ions responding to radiation in selected frequency channels. We show that a class of Gaussian composite pulses and complex sech pulses provide accurate qubit pi-rotations, which are at the same time channel selective on a 5 MHz frequency scale and tolerant to 0.5 MHz deviations of the transition frequency of ions within a single channel. Rotations in qubit space of arbitrary angles and phases are pro…
We propose to encode quantum information in rotational excitations in a molecular ensemble. Using a stripline cavity field for quantum state transfer between the molecular ensemble and a Cooper pair box two-level system, our proposal offers a linear scaling of the number of qubits in our register with the number of rotationally excited states available in the molecules.
On the basis of the general quantum microscopic theory we study the process of spontaneous decay of an excited atom in a dense and disordered ensemble of point-like impurity atoms embedded into transparent dielectric and located near a charged perfectly conducting surface. We have analyzed the simultaneous influence of the modified spatial structure of field modes near the conductive surface and the electric field on the character of interatomic dipoledipole interaction. This leads to the modification of the transition spectrum of an excited atom inside an ensemble and the spontaneous decay dy…
We propose to control light trapping in a large ensemble of cold atoms by an external, static magnetic field. For an appropriate choice of frequency and polarization of the exciting pulse, the field is expected to speed up the fluorescence of a dilute atomic system. In a dense ensemble, the field does not affect the early-time superradiant signal but amplifies intensity fluctuations at intermediate times and induces a very slow, nonexponential long-time decay. The slowing down of fluorescence is due to the excitation of spatially localized collective atomic states that appear only under a stro…
Advanced quantum technologies, such as quantum simulation, computation, and metrology are thriving for the implementation of large-scale configurations of identical quantum systems. Sets of atoms and molecules have the advantage of having identical intrinsic properties but need to be placed in identical environments as well. In this work, we present a strong suppression of dephasing effects and a significant increase of the coherence time for ensembles of neutral atoms in arrays of optical traps. Compensation of the differential Stark shift caused by the optical trapping potential is achieved …
Using the standard Hamiltonian of the BCS theory, we show that in an ensemble of interacting fermions there exists a coherent state $|NC>$, which nullifies the Hamiltonian of the interparticle interaction. This state has an analogy with the well-known in quantum optics coherent population trapping effect (CPT). A possible application of such CPT-like states in the superconductivity theory is discussed.
Electron spins in solids are promising candidates for quantum memories for superconducting qubits because they can have long coherence times, large collective couplings, and many quantum bits can be encoded into the spin-waves of a single ensemble. We demonstrate the coupling of electron spin ensembles to a superconducting transmission-line resonator at coupling strengths greatly exceeding the cavity decay rate and comparable to spin linewidth. We also use the enhanced coupling afforded by the small cross-section of the transmission line to perform broadband spectroscopy of ruby at millikelvin…
The lifetime of trapped ion ensembles corresponds to a crucial parameter determining the potential scalability of their prospective applications and is often limited by the achievable vacuum level in the apparatus. We report on the realization of a room-temperature $^{40}{\rm Ca}^{+}$ ion trapping vacuum apparatus with unprecedentedly low reaction rates of ions with a dominant vacuum contaminant: hydrogen. We present our trap assembly procedures and hydrogen pressure characterization by analysis of the CaH$^+$ molecule formation rate.
A novel protocol of interrogation based on coherent population trapping in an N-level scheme atomic system leads to dark resonances involving three different photons. An ensemble of several hundreds of radiofrequency-trapped ions is probed by three lasers simultaneously locked onto the same optical frequency comb, resulting in high-contrast spectral lines referenced to an atomic transition in the THz domain. We discuss the cause of uncertainties and limitations for this method and show that reaching a sub-kHz resolution is experimentally accessible via this interrogation protocole.
Many important physical processes have dynamics that are too complex to completely model analytically. Optimisation of such processes often relies on intuition, trial-and-error, or the construction of empirical models. Machine learning based on artificial neural networks has emerged as an efficient means to develop empirical models of complex systems. We implement a deep artificial neural network to optimise the magneto-optic cooling and trapping of neutral atomic ensembles. Cold atomic ensembles have become commonplace in laboratories around the world, however, many-body interactions give ris…
We investigate the coupling of an ensemble of phosphorus donors in an isotopically purified $^{28}$Si host lattice interacting with a superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator. The microwave transmission spectrum of the resonator shows a normal mode splitting characteristic for high cooperativity. The evaluated collective coupling strength $g_{\mathrm{eff}}$ is of the same order as the loss rate of the spin system $γ$, indicating the onset of strong coupling. We develop a statistical model to describe the influence of temperature on the coupling strength from $50\,\mathrm{mK}$ to $3.5\,\mat…
We describe an efficient numerical method for simulating the dynamics of interacting spin ensembles in the presence of dephasing and decay. The method builds on the discrete truncated Wigner approximation for isolated systems, which combines the mean-field dynamics of a spin ensemble with a Monte Carlo sampling of discrete initial spin values to account for quantum correlations. Here we show how this approach can be generalized for dissipative spin systems by replacing the deterministic mean-field evolution by a stochastic process, which describes the decay of coherences and populations while …
We analyze the properties of a pulsed Coherent Population Trapping protocol that uses a controlled decay from the excited state in a $Λ$-level scheme. We study this problem analytically and numerically and find regimes where narrow transmission, absorption, or fluorescence spectral lines occur. We then look for optimal frequency measurements using these spectral features by computing the Allan deviation in the presence of ground state decoherence and show that the protocol is on a par with Ramsey-CPT. We discuss possible implementations with ensembles of alkali atoms and single ions and demons…
Typical sources of ultracold atoms operate with a considerable delay between the delivery of ensembles due to sequential trapping and cooling schemes. Therefore, alternative schemes for the continuous generation of ultracold atoms are highly desirable. Here, we demonstrate the continuous loading of a magnetic trap from a quasi-continuous atom beam. We achieve a steady state with $3.8 \times 10^7$ magnetically trapped atoms and a temperature of $102 μ$K. The ensemble is protected from laser light sources, a requirement for its application for metrological tasks or sympathetic cooling. The conti…
Yttrium orthosilicate (Y$_2$SiO$_5$, or YSO) has proved to be a convenient host for rare-earth ions used in demonstrations of microwave quantum memories and optical memories with microwave interfaces, and shows promise for coherent microwave--optical conversion owing to its favourable optical and spin properties. The strong coupling required by such microwave applications could be achieved using superconducting resonators patterned directly on Y$_2$SiO$_5$, and hence we investigate here the use of Y$_2$SiO$_5$ as an alternative to sapphire or silicon substrates for superconducting hybrid devic…
Light transport in a dense and disordered cold atomic ensemble, where the cooperation of atomic dipoles essentially modifies their coupling with the radiation modes, offers an alternative approach to light-matter interfacing protocols. Here, we show how the cooperativity and quasi-static dipole interaction affect the process of light propagation under the conditions of electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT). We perform comparative analysis of the self-consistent approach with ab-initio microscopic calculations and emphasize the role of the interatomic interaction in the dipoles' dynami…
For a transition $F_e=0\leftrightarrow F_g=1$ driven by a linearly polarized light and probed by a circularly light, quantum coherence effects are investigated. Due to the coherence between the drive Rabi frequency and Zeeman splitting, electromagnetically induced transparency, electromagnetically induced absorption, and the transition from positive to negative dispersion are obtained, as well as the populations coherently oscillating in a wide spectral region. At the zero pump-probe detuning, the subluminal and superluminal light propagation is predicted. Finally, coherent population trapping…
An ensemble of multilevel atoms is a good candidate for a quantum information storage device. The information is encrypted in the collective ground state atomic coherence, which, in the absence of external excitation, is decoupled from the vacuum and therefore decoherence free. However, in the process of manipulation of atoms with light pulses (writing, reading), one inadvertently introduces a coupling to the environment, i.e. a source of decoherence. The dissipation process is often treated as an independent process for each atom in the ensemble, an approach which fails at large atomic optica…
We apply optimal control techniques to an inhomogeneous spin ensemble coupled to a cavity. A general procedure is proposed for designing the control strategies. We numerically show the extent to which optimal control fields robust against system uncertainties help enhancing the sensitivity of the detection process. The parameters of the numerical simulations are taken from recent Electron Spin Resonance experiments. The low and high cooperativity regimes are explored.
We study the coherent cooperative phenomena of the system composed of two interacting atomic ensembles in the thermodynamic limit. Remarkably, the system exhibits the Dicke-like quantum phase transition and entanglement behavior although the governing Hamiltonian is fundamentally different from the spin-boson Dicke Hamiltonian, offering the opportunity for investigating collective matter-light dynamics with pure matter waves. The model can be realized with two Bose-Einstein condensates or atomic ensembles trapped in two optical cavities coupled to each other. The interaction between the two se…
We use nominally forbidden electron-nuclear spin transitions in nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond to demonstrate coherent manipulation of a nuclear spin ensemble using microwave fields at room temperature. We show that employing an off-axis magnetic field with a modest amplitude($\approx$ 0.01 T) at an angle with respect to the NV natural quantization axes is enough to tilt the direction of the electronic spins, and enable efficient spin exchange with the nitrogen nuclei of the NV center. We could then demonstrate fast Rabi oscillations on electron-nuclear spin exchanging transitions, c…
