We give a short proof that the coherent information is an achievable rate for the transmission of quantum information through a noisy quantum channel. Our method is to produce random codes by performing a unitarily covariant projective measurement on a typical subspace of a tensor power state. We show that, provided the rank of each measurement operator is sufficiently small, the transmitted data will with high probability be decoupled from the channel's environment. We also show that our construction leads to random codes whose average input is close to a product state and outline a modification yielding unitarily invariant ensembles of maximally entangled codes.
Berta et al [Phys. Rev. Lett., 121, 040504 (2018)] claim that their result provides a conceptually new extension of the decoupling approach to quantum information theory. We provide an alternate proof using the plain-vanilla decoupling approach for the achievable rates of their main result and hence, their claim is unwarranted, and the title can be misleading when taken in conjunction with the claim.
The decoupling technique is a fundamental tool in quantum information theory with applications ranging from quantum thermodynamics to quantum many body physics to the study of black hole radiation. In this work we introduce the notion of catalytic decoupling, that is, decoupling in the presence of an uncorrelated ancilla system. This removes a restriction on the standard notion of decoupling, which becomes important for structureless resources, and yields a tight characterization in terms of the max-mutual information. Catalytic decoupling naturally unifies various tasks like the erasure of co…
A missing piece in quantum information theory, with very few exceptions, has been to provide the random coding exponents for quantum information-processing protocols. We remedy the situation by providing these exponents for a variety of protocols including those at the top of the family tree of protocols. Our line of attack is to provide an exponential bound on the decoupling error for a restricted class of completely positive maps where a key term in the exponent is in terms of a Rényi α-information-theoretic quantity for any α$\in$ (1,2]. Among the protocols covered are fully quantum Slepian…
A longstanding challenge in the foundations of quantum mechanics is the verification of alternative collapse theories despite their mathematical similarity to decoherence. To this end, we suggest a novel method based on dynamical decoupling. Experimental observation of nonzero saturation of the decoupling error in the limit of fast decoupling operations can provide evidence for alternative quantum theories. As part of the analysis we prove that unbounded Hamiltonians can always be decoupled, and provide novel dilations of Lindbladians.
Periodic deterministic bang-bang dynamical decoupling and the quantum Zeno effect are known to emerge from the same physical mechanism. Both concepts are based on cycles of strong and frequent kicks provoking a subdivision of the Hilbert space into independent subspaces. However, previous unification results do not capture the case of random bang-bang dynamical decoupling, which can be advantageous to the deterministic case but has an inherently acyclic structure. Here, we establish a correspondence between random dynamical decoupling and the quantum Zeno effect by investigating the average ov…
The discovery of the intriguing phenomenon that certain kinds of quantum correlations remain impervious to noise up to a specific point in time and then suddenly decay, has generated immense recent interest. We exploit dynamical decoupling sequences to prolong the persistence of time-invariant quantum discord in a system of two NMR qubits decohering in independent dephasing environments. We experimentally prepare two-qubit Bell-diagonal quantum states that interact with individual dephasing channels and demonstrate the effect of dynamical decoupling on the preservation of both quantum and clas…
The main obstacles to the realization of high-fidelity quantum gates are the control errors arising from inaccurate manipulation of a quantum system and the decoherence caused by the interaction between the quantum system and its environment. Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation allows for high-speed implementation of whole-geometric quantum gates, making quantum computation robust against control errors. Dynamical decoupling provides an effective method to protect quantum gates against environment-induced decoherence, regardless of collective decoherence or independent decoherence. In t…

Dynamical decoupling is a technique that protects qubits against noise. The ability to preserve quantum coherence in the presence of noise is essential for the development of quantum devices. Here the Rigetti quantum computing platform was used to test different dynamical decoupling sequences. The performance of the sequences was characterized by Quantum Process Tomography and analyzed using the quantum channels formalism. It is shown that dynamical decoupling can reduce qubit dephasing but cannot protect against spontaneous emission. Furthermore, from process tomography results, it was also p…
State transfer across discrete quantum networks is one of the elementary tasks of quantum information processing. Its aim is the faithful placement of information into a specific position in the network. However, all physical systems suffer from imperfections, which can severely limit the transfer fidelity. We present selective dynamical decoupling schemes which are capable of stabilizing imperfect quantum state transfer protocols on the model of a bent linear qubit chain. The efficiency of the schemes is tested and verified in numerical simulations on a number of realistic cases. The simulati…
We develop a hierarchical functional derivative method to investigate the reduced dynamics of a quantum dissipative system within the framework of a stochastic decoupling description. Keeping only the lowest order truncation of the hierarchical functional derivatives, one can recover the second order Nakajima-Zwanzig quantum master equation. Taking into account the higher-order corrections, our method can be implemented as a highly efficient numerical scheme for a general quantum dissipative system beyond the usual Markovian, rotating-wave, and weak-coupling approximations.
Long-lived optical quantum memories are of great importance for scalable distribution of entanglement over remote networks (e.g. quantum repeaters). Long-lived storage generally relies on storing the optical states as spin excitations since these often exhibit long coherence times. To extend the storage time beyond the intrinsic spin dephasing time one can use dynamical decoupling techniques. However, it has been shown that dynamical decoupling introduces noise in optical quantum memories based on ensembles of atoms. In this article a simple model is proposed to calculate the resulting signal-…
We investigate the relationship between non-Markovianity and the effectiveness of a dynamical decoupling protocol for qubits undergoing pure dephasing. We consider an exact model in which dephasing arises due to a bosonic environment with a spectral density of the Ohmic class. This is parametrised by an Ohmicity parameter by changing which we can model both Markovian and non-Markovian environments. Interestingly, we find that engineering a non-Markovian environment is detrimental to the efficiency of the dynamical decoupling scheme, leading to a worse coherence preservation. We show that each …
Quantum information processing with multi-level systems (qudits) provides additional features and applications than the two-level systems. However, qudits are more prone to dephasing and dynamical decoupling for qudits has never been experimentally demonstrated. Here, as a proof-of-principle demonstration, we experimentally apply dynamical decoupling to protect superpositions with three levels of a trapped $^9\rm{Be}^+$ ion from ambient noisy magnetic field, prolonging coherence by up to approximately an order of magnitude. Our demonstration, straightforwardly scalable to more levels, may open…
The implementation of polarization-based quantum communication is limited by signal loss and decoherence caused by the birefringence of a single-mode fiber. We investigate the Knill dynamical decoupling scheme, implemented using half-wave plates, to minimize decoherence and show that a fidelity greater than $99\%$ can be achieved in absence of rotation error and fidelity greater than $96\%$ can be achieved in presence of rotation error. Such a scheme can be used to preserve any quantum state with high fidelity and has potential application for constructing all optical quantum delay line, quant…
Dynamical decoupling (DD) is an active and effective method for suppressing decoherence of a quantum system from its environment. In contrast to the nominal biaxial DD,this work presents a uniaxial decoupling protocol that requires a significantly reduced number of pulses and a much lower bias field satisfying the "magic" condition. We show this uniaxial DD protocol works effectively in a number of model systems of practical interests, e.g., a spinor atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in stray magnetic fields (classical noise), or an electron spin coupled to nuclear spins (quantum noise) in a semi…
Insights from quantum information theory show that correlation measures based on quantum entropy are fundamental tools that reveal the entanglement structure of multipartite states. In that spirit, Groisman, Popescu, and Winter [Physical Review A 72, 032317 (2005)] showed that the quantum mutual information $I(A;B)$ quantifies the minimal rate of noise needed to erase the correlations in a bipartite state of quantum systems $AB$. Here, we investigate correlations in tripartite systems $ABE$. In particular, we are interested in the minimal rate of noise needed to apply to the systems $AE$ in or…
Non-Markovian Quantum Error Deterrence by Dynamical Decoupling in a General Environment
研究了一种动态解耦方案,用于阻止非马尔可夫(通常对应于低温、短时间和强耦合)机制中的错误,该机制适用于由多级结构构造的量子比特。我们采用最近提出的有效自旋玻色子模型[K.盐川和B. L. Hu,Phys.
At the heart of quantum technology development is the control of quantum systems at the level of individual quanta. Mathematically, this is realised through the study of Hamiltonians and the use of methods to solve the dynamics of quantum systems in various regimes. Here, we present a pedagogical introduction to solving the dynamics of quantum systems by the use of a Lie algebra decoupling theorem. As background, we include an overview of Lie groups and Lie algebras aimed at a general physicist audience. We then prove the theorem and apply it to three well-known examples of linear and quadrati…
I introduce an energy constrained approximate twirling operation that can be used to diagonalize effective logical channels in GKP quantum error correction, project states into the GKP code space and construct a dynamical decoupling sequence with fast displacements pulses to distill the GKP stabilizer Hamiltonians from a suitable substrate-Hamiltonian. The latter is given by an LC-oscillator comprising a superinductance in parallel to a Josephson Junction. This platform in principle allows for protected GKP quantum computing without explicit stabilizer measurements or state-reset by dynamicall…
