The current version provides a general method to generate recursive decompositions of unitary evolutions. Several decompositions obtained before are shown to be as a special case of this general procedure
Decompositions of the unitary group U(n) are useful tools in quantum information theory as they allow one to decompose unitary evolutions into local evolutions and evolutions causing entanglement. Several recursive decompositions have been proposed in the literature to express unitary operators as products of simple operators with properties relevant in entanglement dynamics. In this paper, using the concept of grading of a Lie algebra, we cast these decompositions in a unifying scheme and show how new recursive decompositions can be obtained. In particular, we propose a new recursive decomposition of the unitary operator on $N$ qubits, and we give a numerical example.
In this note we make a comment on the paper by Jarlskog (math-ph/0504049) in which she gave a parametrisation to unitary matrices. Namely, we show that her recursive method is essentially obtained by the canonical coordinate of the second kind in the Lie group theory, and propose a problem on constructing unitary gates in quantum computation by making use of the parametrisation.
A quantum compiler is a software program for decomposing ("compiling") an arbitrary unitary matrix into a sequence of elementary operations (SEO). Coppersmith showed that the $\nb$-bit Discrete Fourier Transform matrix $U_{FT}$ can be decomposed in a very efficient way, as a sequence of order($\nb^2$) elementary operations. Can a quantum compiler that doesn't know a priori about Coppersmith's decomposition nevertheless decompose $U_{FT}$ as a sequence of order($\nb^2$) elementary operations? In other words, can it rediscover Coppersmith's decomposition by following a much more general algorith…
For any unitary matrix there exists a ZXZ decomposition, according to a theorem by Idel and Wolf. For any even-dimensional unitary matrix there exists a block-ZXZ decomposition, according to a theorem by Führ and Rzeszotnik. We conjecture that these two decompositions are merely special cases of a set of decompositions, one for every divisor of the matrix dimension. For lack of a proof, we provide an iterative Sinkhorn algorithm to find an approximate numerical decomposition.
The CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (CP) decomposition is a generalization of the spectral decomposition of matrices to higher-order tensors. In this paper we use the CP decomposition to study unitary equivalence of higher order tensors and construct several invariants of local unitary equivalence for general higher order tensors. Based on this new method, we study the coefficient tensors of $3$-qubit states and obtain a necessary and sufficient criterion for local unitary equivalence of general tripartite states in terms of the CP decomposition. We also generalize this method to obtain some invariants of l…
We describe a decomposition of the Lie group of unitary evolutions for a bipartite quantum system of arbitrary dimensions. The decomposition is based on a recursive procedure which systematically uses the Cartan classification of the symmetric spaces of the Lie group SO(n). The resulting factorization of unitary evolutions clearly displays the local and entangling character of each factor.
We propose a high order numerical decomposition of exponentials of hermitean operators in terms of a product of exponentials of simple terms, following an idea which has been pioneered by M. Suzuki, however implementing it for complex coefficients. We outline a convenient fourth order formula which can be written compactly for arbitrary number of noncommuting terms in the Hamiltonian and which is superiour to the optimal formula with real coefficients, both in complexity and accuracy. We show asymptotic stability of our method for sufficiently small time step and demonstrate its efficiency and…
Unitary operation is an essential step for quantum information processing. We first propose an iterative procedure for decomposing a general unitary operation without resorting to controlled-NOT gate and single-qubit rotation library. Based on the results of decomposition, we design two compact architectures to deterministically implement arbitrary two-qubit polarization-spatial and spatial-polarization collective unitary operations, respectively. The involved linear optical elements are reduced from 25 to 20 and 21 to 20, respectively. Moreover, the parameterized quantum computation can be fl…
A general scheme is presented to decompose a $d$-by-$d$ unitary matrix as the product of two-level unitary matrices with additional structure and prescribed determinants. In particular, the decomposition can be done by using two-level matrices in $d-1$ classes, where each class is isomorphic to the group of $2\times 2$ unitary matrices. The proposed scheme is easy to apply, and useful in treating problems with the additional structural restrictions. A Matlab program is written to implement the scheme, and the result is used to deduce the fact that every quantum gate acting on $n$-qubit registe…
A scheme to perform the Cartan decomposition for the Lie algebra su(N) of arbitrary finite dimensions is introduced. The schme is based on two algebraic structures, the conjugate partition and the quotient algebra, that are easily generated by a Cartan subalgebra and generally exist in su(N). In particular, the Lie algebras su(2^p) and every su(2^{p-1} < N < 2^p) share the isomorphic structure of the quotient algebra. This structure enables an efficient algorithm for the recursive and exhaustive construction of Cartan decompositions. Further with the scheme, a unitary transformation in SU(N) c…
We show that any unitary operator on the $d_A\times d_B$ system ($d_A\ge 2$) can be decomposed into the product of at most $4d_A-5$ controlled unitary operators. The number can be reduced to $2d_A-1$ when $d_A$ is a power of two. We also prove that three controlled unitaries can implement a bipartite complex permutation operator, and discuss the connection to an analogous result on classical reversible circuits. We further show that any $n$-partite unitary on the space $\mathbb{C}^{d_1}\otimes...\otimes\mathbb{C}^{d_n}$ is the product of at most $[2\prod^{n-1}_{j=1}(2d_j-2)-1]$ controlled unit…
The causal structure of a unitary transformation is the set of relations of possible influence between any input subsystem and any output subsystem. We study whether such causal structure can be understood in terms of compositional structure of the unitary. Given a quantum circuit with no path from input system $A$ to output system $B$, system $A$ cannot influence system $B$. Conversely, given a unitary $U$ with a no-influence relation from input $A$ to output $B$, it follows from [B. Schumacher and M. D. Westmoreland, Quantum Information Processing 4 no. 1, (Feb, 2005)] that there exists a ci…
In this paper we provide an explicit parameterization of arbitrary unitary transformation acting on n qubits, in terms of one and two qubit quantum gates. The construction is based on successive Cartan decompositions of the semi-simple Lie group, SU(2^n). The decomposition highlights the geometric aspects of building an arbitrary unitary transformation out of quantum gates and makes explicit the choice of pulse sequences for the implementation of arbitrary unitary transformation on $n coupled spins. Finally we make observations on the optimality of the design procedure.
The evaluation of the performance of adiabatic annealers is hindered by lack of efficient algorithms for simulating their behaviour. We exploit the analyticity of the standard model for the adiabatic quantum process to develop an efficient recursive method for its numerical simulation in case of both unitary and non-unitary evolution. Numerical simulations show distinctly different distributions for the most important figure of merit of adiabatic quantum computing --- the success probability --- in these two cases.
A key task in quantum computation is the application of a sequence of gates implementing a specific unitary operation. However, the decomposition of an arbitrary unitary operation into simpler quantum gates is a nontrivial problem. Here we propose a general and robust protocol to decompose any target unitary into a sequence of Pauli rotations. The procedure involves identifying a commuting subset of Pauli operators having a high trace overlap with the target unitary, followed by a numerical optimization of their corresponding rotation angles. The protocol is demonstrated by decomposing several…
This paper reveals the relation between the canonical coset decomposition of unitary matrices and the corresponding decomposition via Householder reflections. These results can be used to parametrize unitary matrices via Householder reflections.
We derive a set of invariants under local unitary transformations for arbitrary dimensional quantum systems. These invariants are given by hyperdeterminants and independent from the detailed pure state decompositions of a given quantum state. They also give rise to necessary conditions for the equivalence of quantum states under local unitary transformations.
We propose a universal decomposition of unitary maps over a tensorial power of C^2, introducing the key concept of "phase maps", and investigate how this decomposition can be used to implement unitary maps directly in the measurement-based model for quantum computing. Specifically, we show how to extract from such a decomposition a matching entangled graph state (with inputs), and a set of measurements angles, when there is one. Next, we check whether the obtained graph state verifies a "flow" condition, which guarantees an execution order such that the dependent measurements and corrections o…
We investigate the relation between Cartan decompositions of the unitary group and discrete quantum symmetries. To every Cartan decomposition there corresponds a quantum symmetry which is the identity when applied twice. As an application, we describe a new and general method to obtain Cartan decompositions of the unitary group of evolutions of multipartite systems from Cartan decompositions on the single subsystems. The resulting decomposition, which we call of the odd-even type, contains, as a special case, the concurrence canonical decomposition (CCD) presented in the context of entanglemen…
Currently available quantum hardware allows for small scale implementations of quantum machine learning algorithms. Such experiments aid the search for applications of quantum computers by benchmarking the near-term feasibility of candidate algorithms. Here we demonstrate the quantum learning of a two-qubit unitary by a sequence of three parameterized quantum circuits containing a total of 21 variational parameters. Moreover, we variationally diagonalize the unitary to learn its spectral decomposition, i.e., its eigenvalues and eigenvectors. We illustrate how this can be used as a subroutine t…
In this work we present a method of decomposition of arbitrary unitary matrix $U\in\mathbf U(2^k)$ into a product of single-qubit negator and controlled-$\sqrt{\mbox{NOT}}$ gates. Since the product results with negator matrix, which can be treated as complex analogue if bistochastic matrix, our method can be seen as complex analogue of Sinkhorn-Knopp algorithm, where diagonal matrices are replaced by adding and removing an one-qubit ancilla. The decomposition can be found constructively and resulting circuit consists of $O(4^k)$ entangling gates, which is proved to be optimal. An example of su…
How to implement a computation task efficiently is the central problem in quantum computation science. For a quantum circuit, the multi-control unitary operations are the very important components. We present an extremely efficient approach to implement multiple multi-control unitary operations directly without any decompositions to CNOT gates and single-photon gates. The necessary two-photon operations could be reduced from $\mathcal{O}(n^3)$ with the traditional decomposition approach to $\mathcal{O}(n)$ with the present approach, which will greatly relax the requirement resources and make t…
We prove that if any error channel has a Kraus decomposition that is simultaneously correctable and Hilbert-Schmidt (HS) complete, then the existence of Kraus sets with these properties guarantees the correctability of all quantum channels. As a proof of the existence of such Kraus sets, the $n$-level depolarization channel is shown to have a random-unitary (RU) decomposition that is both HS complete and correctable due its RU nature, thereby proving that all quantum channels are correctable. As an application, conditions for universal error-correction operations are presented.
A quantum compiler is a software program for decomposing ("compiling") an arbitrary unitary matrix into a sequence of elementary operations (SEO). The author of this paper is also the author of a quantum compiler called Qubiter. Qubiter uses a matrix decomposition called the Cosine-Sine Decomposition (CSD) that is well known in the field of Computational Linear Algebra. One way of measuring the efficiency of a quantum compiler is to measure the number of CNOTs it uses to express an unstructured unitary matrix (a unitary matrix with no special symmetries). We will henceforth refer to this numbe…
We explore the Bloch-Messiah decomposition of Gaussian unitary to analyze the Entangling Cloner Attack performed by an eavesdropper on a discrete modulated continuous variable QKD scenario. Such a decomposition allows to replace the nonlinear unitary resulting from eavesdropping and tracing out Bob's mode into an architecture of single-mode operations (squeezers, phase shifters and displacements) and a two-mode beam splitter. Based on such architecture we were able to get tighter upper bounds to the eavesdropper entropy for a discrete modulated CVQKD scheme. The new bounds are justified from t…
We address the question of finding the most effective convex decompositions into boundary elements (so-called boundariness) for sets of quantum states, observables and channels. First we show that in general convex sets the boundariness essentially coincides with the question of the most distinguishable element, thus, providing an operational meaning for this concept. Unexpectedly, we discovered that for any interior point of the set of channels the optimal decomposition necessarily contains a unitary channel. In other words, for any given channel the best distinguishable one is some unitary c…
We present a two-part program for state space decomposition. States are classified into entanglement classes based on local unitary transformations, and then characterized as elements of topological spaces using the language of fibre bundles.
Multi-controlled unitary gates have been a subject of interest in quantum computing since its inception, and are widely used in quantum algorithms. The current state-of-the-art approach to implementing n-qubit multi-controlled gates involves the use of a quadratic number of single-qubit and CNOT gates. However, linear solutions are possible for the case where the controlled gate is a special unitary SU(2). The most widely-used decomposition of an n-qubit multi-controlled SU(2) gate requires a circuit with a number of CNOT gates proportional to 28n. In this work, we present a new decomposition …
Recent research in generalizing quantum computation from 2-valued qudits to d-valued qudits has shown practical advantages for scaling up a quantum computer. A further generalization leads to quantum computing with hybrid qudits where two or more qudits have different finite dimensions. Advantages of hybrid and d-valued gates (circuits) and their physical realizations have been studied in detail by Muthukrishnan and Stroud (Physical Review A, 052309, 2000), Daboul et al. (J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 36 2525-2536, 2003), and Bartlett et al (Physical Review A, Vol.65, 052316, 2002). In both cases, a …
Constructing appropriate unitary matrix operators for new quantum algorithms and finding the minimum cost gate sequences for the implementation of these unitary operators is of fundamental importance in the field of quantum information and quantum computation. Evolution of quantum circuits faces two major challenges: complex and huge search space and the high costs of simulating quantum circuits on classical computers. Here, we use the group leaders optimization algorithm to decompose a given unitary matrix into a proper-minimum cost quantum gate sequence. We test the method on the known decom…
We draw attention to the existence of "genuine" fidelity gaps in an ancilla-assisted sequential decomposition of genuinely entangling isometry and unitary operations of quantum computing. The gaps arise upon a bipartite decomposition of a multiqubit operation in a one-way sequential recipe in which an ancillary system interacts locally and only once with each qubit in a row. Given the known "no-go" associated with such a theoretically and experimentally desirable decomposition, various figures of merit are introduced to analyze the optimal "fidelity" with which an arbitrary genuinely entanglin…
Electron transport in realistic physical and chemical systems often involves the non-trivial exchange of energy with a large environment, requiring the definition and treatment of open quantum systems. Because the time evolution of an open quantum system employs a non-unitary operator, the simulation of open quantum systems presents a challenge for universal quantum computers constructed from only unitary operators or gates. Here we present a general algorithm for implementing the action of any non-unitary operator on an arbitrary state on a quantum device. We show that any quantum operator ca…
Birkhoff's theorem tells that any doubly stochastic matrix can be decomposed as a weighted sum of permutation matrices. A similar theorem reveals that any unitary matrix can be decomposed as a weighted sum of complex permutation matrices. Unitary matrices of dimension equal to a power of~2 (say $2^w$) deserve special attention, as they represent quantum qubit circuits. We investigate which subgroup of the signed permutation matrices suffices to decompose an arbitrary such matrix. It turns out to be a matrix group isomorphic to the extraspecial group {\bf E}$_{2^{2w+1}}^+$ of order $2^{2w+1}$. …
The factorized form of the unitary coupled-cluster approximation is one of the most promising methodologies to prepare trial states for strongly correlated systems within the variational quantum eigensolver framework. The factorized form of the UCC ansatz can be systematically applied to a reference state to generate the desired entanglement. The difficulty associated with such an approach is the requirement of simultaneously entangling a growing number of qubits, which quickly exceeds the hardware limitations of today's quantum machines. In particular, while circuits for singles and double ex…
Sinkhorn proved that every entry-wise positive matrix can be made doubly stochastic by multiplying with two diagonal matrices. In this note we prove a recently conjectured analogue for unitary matrices: every unitary can be decomposed into two diagonal unitaries and one whose row- and column sums are equal to one. The proof is non-constructive and based on a reformulation in terms of symplectic topology. As a corollary, we obtain a decomposition of unitary matrices into an interlaced product of unitary diagonal matrices and discrete Fourier transformations. This provides a new decomposition of…
We investigate a decomposition of a unital Lindblad dynamical map of an open quantum system into two distinct types of mapping on the Hilbert-Schmidt space of quantum states. One component of the decomposed map corresponds to reversible behaviours, while the other to irreversible characteristics. For a finite dimensional system, we employ real vectors or Bloch representations and express a dynamical map on the state space as a real matrix acting on the representation. It is found that rotation and scaling transformations on the real vector space, obtained from the real-polar decomposition, for…
Realizing non-unitary transformations on unitary-gate based quantum devices is critically important for simulating a variety of physical problems including open quantum systems and subnormalized quantum states. We present a dilation based algorithm to simulate non-unitary operations using probabilistic quantum computing with only one ancilla qubit. We utilize the singular-value decomposition (SVD) to decompose any general quantum operator into a product of two unitary operators and a diagonal non-unitary operator, which we show can be implemented by a diagonal unitary operator in a 1-qubit dil…
NP-hard problems such as the maximum clique or minimum vertex cover problems, two of Karp's 21 NP-hard problems, have several applications in computational chemistry, biochemistry and computer network security. Adiabatic quantum annealers can search for the optimum value of such NP-hard optimization problems, given the problem can be embedded on their hardware. However, this is often not possible due to certain limitations of the hardware connectivity structure of the annealer. This paper studies a general framework for a decomposition algorithm for NP-hard graph problems aiming to identify an…
