A characterization of the complete correlation structure in an $n$-party system is proposed in terms of a series of $(k,n)$ threshold classical secret sharing protocols ($2\le k\le n$). The total correlation is shown to be the sum of independent correlations of 2-, 3-,$...$, $n$-parties. Our result unifies several earlier scattered works, and shines new light at the important topic of multi-party quantum entanglement. As an application, we explicitly construct the hierarchy of correlations in an $n$-qubit graph state.
We are interested in the problem of characterizing the correlations that arise when performing local measurements on separate quantum systems. In a previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 010401 (2007)], we introduced an infinite hierarchy of conditions necessarily satisfied by any set of quantum correlations. Each of these conditions could be tested using semidefinite programming. We present here new results concerning this hierarchy. We prove in particular that it is complete, in the sense that any set of correlations satisfying every condition in the hierarchy has a quantum representation in te…
Generalizing Amari's work titled "Information geometry on hierarchy of probability distributions", we define the degrees of irreducible multiparty correlations in a multiparty quantum state based on quantum relative entropy. We prove that these definitions are equivalent to those derived from the maximal von Neaumann entropy principle. Based on these definitions, we find a counterintuitive result on irreducible multiparty correlations: although the degree of the total correlation in a three-party quantum state does not increase under local operations, the irreducible three-party correlation ca…
The fragile nature of quantum information makes it practically impossible to completely isolate a quantum state from noise under quantum channel transmissions. Quantum networks are complex systems formed by the interconnection of quantum processing devices through quantum channels. In this context, characterizing how channels introduce noise in transmitted quantum states is of paramount importance. Precise descriptions of the error distributions introduced by non-unitary quantum channels can inform quantum error correction protocols to tailor operations for the particular error model. In addit…
Contrary to Bell scenario, quantum nonlocality can be exploited even when all the parties do not have freedom to select inputs randomly. Such manifestation of nonlocality is possible in networks involving independent sources. One can utilize such a feature of quantum networks for purpose of entanglement detection of bipartite quantum states. In this context, we characterize correlations simulated in networks involving finite number of sources generating quantum states when some parties perform fixed measurement. Beyond bipartite entanglement, we enquire the same for networks involving sources …
The multipartite quantum networks feature multiple independent sources, in contrast to the conventional multipartite Bell experiment involving a single source. So far, network nonlocality has been explored when each source produces a two-qubit entangled state. In this work, we demonstrate the network nonlocality when each party performs a black-box measurement, and the dimension of the system remains unspecified. In an interesting work, by considering each source produces two-qubit entangled states in the conventional bilocal scenario, Gisin \emph{et. al.} in https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.9…
We investigate a fundamental property of device independent security in quantum cryptography by characterizing probability distributions which are necessarily independent of the measurement results of any eavesdropper. We show that probability distributions that are secure in this sense are exactly the extremal quantum probability distributions. This allows us to give a characterization of security in algebraic terms. We apply the method to common examples for two-party as well as multi-party setups and present a scheme for verifying security of probability distributions with two parties, two …
Clarifying the relation between the whole and its parts is crucial for many problems in science. In quantum mechanics, this question manifests itself in the quantum marginal problem, which asks whether there is a global pure quantum state for some given marginals. This problem arises in many contexts, ranging from quantum chemistry to entanglement theory and quantum error correcting codes. In this paper, we prove a correspondence of the marginal problem to the separability problem. Based on this, we describe a sequence of semidefinite programs which can decide whether some given marginals are …
We define two ways of quantifying the quantum correlations based on quantum Fisher information (QFI) in order to study the quantum correlations as a resource in quantum metrology. By investigating the hierarchy of measurement-induced Fisher information introduced in Lu et al. [X. M. Lu, S. Luo, and C. H. Oh, Phys Rev. A 86, 022342 (2012)], we show that the presence of quantum correlation can be confirmed by the difference of the Fisher information induced by the measurements of two hierarchies. In particular, the quantitative quantum correlations based on QFI coincide with the geometric discor…
In this work we study the sets of two-party correlations generated from a Bell scenario involving two spatially separated systems with respect to various physical models. We show that the sets of classical, quantum, no-signaling and unrestricted correlations can be expressed as projections of affine sections of appropriate convex cones. As a by-product, we identify a spectrahedral outer approximation to the set of quantum correlations which is contained in the first level of the Navascués, Pironio and Acín (NPA) hierarchy and also a sufficient condition for the set of quantum correlations to b…
We investigate the possibility of characterizing two-party entanglement by measuring correlations of Stokes operators in polarized bright light beams. We adapt a general separability criterion to such operators. We then show that entanglement purification can only be singled out for a particular protocol.
We investigate several problems in entanglement theory from the perspective of convex optimization. This list of problems comprises (A) the decision whether a state is multi-party entangled, (B) the minimization of expectation values of entanglement witnesses with respect to pure product states, (C) the closely related evaluation of the geometric measure of entanglement to quantify pure multi-party entanglement, (D) the test whether states are multi-party entangled on the basis of witnesses based on second moments and on the basis of linear entropic criteria, and (E) the evaluation of instance…
We consider the task of distilling local purity from a noisy quantum state $ρ^{ABC}$, wherein we provide a protocol for three parties, Alice, Bob and Charlie, to distill local purity (at a rate $P$) from many independent copies of a given quantum state $ρ^{ABC}$. The three parties have access to their respective subsystems of $ρ^{ABC}$, and are provided with pure ancilla catalytically, i.e., with the promise of returning them unaltered after the end of the protocol. In addition, Alice and Bob can communicate with Charlie using a one-way multiple-access dephasing channel of link rates $R_1$ and…
We study the set of almost quantum correlations and their refinements in the simplest tripartite Bell scenario where each party is allowed to perform two dichotomic measurements. In contrast to its bipartite counterpart, we find that there already exist facet Bell inequalities that witness almost quantum correlations beyond quantum theory in this simplest tripartite Bell scenario. Furthermore, we study the relation between the almost quantum set and the hierarchy of supersets to the quantum set due to Navascués-Pironio-Acín (NPA) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 010401 (2007)]. While the former lies betw…

Quantum correlations between two parties are essential for the argument of Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen in favour of the incompleteness of quantum mechanics. Schrödinger noted that an essential point is the fact that one party can influence the wave function of the other party by performing suitable measurements. He called this phenomenon quantum steering and studied its properties, but only in the last years this kind of quantum correlation attracted significant interest in quantum information theory. In this paper the theory of quantum steering is reviewed. First, the basic concepts of stee…
