Measures are introduced to quantify the degree of superposition in mixed states with respect to orthogonal decompositions of the Hilbert space of a quantum system.
These superposition measures can be regarded as analogues to entanglement measures, but can also be put in a more direct relation to the latter. By a second quantization of the system it is possible to induce superposition measures from entanglement measures. We consider the measures induced from relative entropy of entanglement and entanglement of formation. We furthermore introduce a class of measures with an operational interpretation in terms of interferometry. We consider the superposition measures under the action of subspace preserving and local subspace preserving channels. The theory is illustrated with models of an atom undergoing a relaxation process in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer.
Quantum mechanics allows coherent superposition between different states of matter. This quality is responsible for major non-classical phenomena that occur in quantum systems. Beyond states, coherent superpositions are also possible between quantum evolutions. We characterize such superpositions here. A resource theoretic framework is developed to quantify superposition present in an arbitrary quantum evolution. In addition to characterization, the framework considers superposition as a quantum resource. This resource can be exploited to perform certain quantum tasks that are otherwise imposs…

相干性起源于叠加原理,在量子力学中起着关键作用。最近,Baumgratz等[T. Baumgratz,M. Cramer和M. B. Plenio,Phys. Rev. Lett. 113,140401(2014)]建立了用于量化有限维量子态的相干性的严格框架。在这项工作中,我们提供了一个框架,量化的相干性高斯态,并明确给出了一个相干性措施的基础上的相对熵。
Quantum state manipulation with gates based on geometric phases acquired during cyclic operations promises inherent fault-tolerance and resilience to local fluctuations in the control parameters. Here we create a general non-Abelian and non-adiabatic holonomic gate acting in the $(\ket{0},\ket{2})$ subspace of a three-level transmon fabricated in a fully coplanar design. Experimentally, this is realized by simultaneously coupling the first two transitions by microwave pulses with amplitudes and phases defined such that the condition of parallel transport is fulfilled. We demonstrate the creati…
Coherent superposition and entanglement are two fundamental aspects of non-classicality. Here we provide a quantitative connection between the two on the level of operations by showing that the dynamical coherence of an operation upper bounds the dynamical entanglement that can be generated from it with the help of additional incoherent operations. In case a particular choice of monotones based on the relative entropy is used for the quantification of these dynamical resources, this bound can be achieved. In addition, we show that an analog to the entanglement potential exists on the level of …
Quantum computation requires qubits that satisfy often-conflicting criteria, including scalable control and long-lasting coherence. One approach to creating a suitable qubit is to operate in an encoded subspace of several physical qubits. Though such encoded qubits may be particularly susceptible to leakage out of their computational subspace, they can be insensitive to certain noise processes and can also allow logical control with a single type of entangling interaction while maintaining favorable features of the underlying physical system. Here we demonstrate a qubit encoded in a subsystem …
We theoretically and experimentally investigate quantum features of an interacting light-matter system from a multidisciplinary perspective, unifying approaches from semiconductor physics, quantum optics, and quantum information science. To this end, we quantify the amount of quantum coherence that results from the quantum superposition of Fock states, constituting a measure of the resourcefulness of the produced state for modern quantum protocols. As an archetypal example of a hybrid light-matter interface, we study a polariton condensate and implement a numerical model to predict its propert…
We establish a strong monogamy-of-entanglement property for subspace coset states, which are uniform superpositions of vectors in a linear subspace of $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ to which has been applied a quantum one-time pad. This property was conjectured recently by [Coladangelo, Liu, Liu, and Zhandry, Crypto'21] and shown to have applications to unclonable decryption and copy-protection of pseudorandom functions. We present two proofs, one which directly follows the method of the original paper and the other which uses an observation from [Vidick and Zhang, Eurocrypt'20] to reduce the analysis to a …
