The efficiency of parameter estimation of quantum channels is studied in this paper. We introduce the concept of programmable parameters to the theory of estimation. It is found that programmable parameters obey the standard quantum limit strictly; hence no speedup is possible in its estimation. We also construct a class of non-unitary quantum channels whose parameter can be estimated in a way that the standard quantum limit is broken. The study of estimation of general quantum channels also enables an investigation of the effect of noises on quantum estimation.

Enhanced Estimation of a Noisy Quantum Channel Using Entanglement

We discuss the estimation of channel parameters for a noisy quantum channel - the so-called Pauli channel - using finite resources. It turns out that prior entanglement considerably enhances the fidelity of the estimation when we compare it to an estimation scheme based on separable quantum states.

A Study of Channel Estimation and Postprocessing in Quantum Key Distribution Protocols

This thesis investigate the channel estimation and the postprocessing of the quantum key distribution protocols. In particular, we propose a new channel estimation procedure, in which we utilize the bit sequences transmitted and received by different bases, and a new postprocessing with two-way classical communication. Then, we show that the key generation rates of the QKD protocols with our channel estimation and/or our postprocessing are higher than those with conventional ones.

Optimal estimation of one parameter quantum channels

We explore the task of optimal quantum channel identification, and in particular the estimation of a general one parameter quantum process. We derive new characterizations of optimality and apply the results to several examples including the qubit depolarizing channel and the harmonic oscillator damping channel. We also discuss the geometry of the problem and illustrate the usefulness of using entanglement in process estimation.

Quantum channel-estimation with particle loss: GHZ versus W states

We consider quantum channel-estimation for depolarizing channels and phase-flip channels extended by ancilla qubits and fed with a GHZ or W state. After application of the channel one or several qubits can be lost, and we calculate the impact of the loss on the quantum Fisher information that determines the smallest uncertainty with which the parameters of these channels can be estimated.

Experiment design and parameter estimation of Pauli channels using convex optimization

A unified framework is proposed in this paper for parameter estimation using convex optimization and experiment design applying convex maximization for Pauli channels, that can be extended to generalized Pauli channels, too. Estimation of n non-identical unitary channels

We investigate the simultaneous estimation of $n$ not necessarily identical unitary channels using multi-partite entanglement. We examine whether it is possible for the rate at which the mean square error decreases to be greater than that using the channels individually. A method is proposed to characterize a high-dimensional quantum channel with the aid of classical light. It uses a single nonseparable input optical field that contains correlations between spatial modes and wavelength to determine the effect of the channel on the spatial degrees of freedom.
