We present an efficient algorithm for twirling a multi-qudit quantum state. The algorithm can be used for approximating the twirling operation in an ensemble of physical systems in which the systems cannot be individually accessed. It can also be used for computing the twirled density matrix on a classical computer. The method is based on a simple non-unitary operation involving a random unitary. When applying this basic building block iteratively, the mean squared error of the approximation decays exponentially. In contrast, when averaging over random unitary matrices the error decreases only algebraically. We present evidence that the unitaries in our algorithm can come from a very imperfect random source or can even be chosen deterministically from a set of cyclically alternating matrices. Based on these ideas we present a quantum circuit realizing twirling efficiently.
Twirling operations, which average a quantum state with respect to a unitary subgroup, have become a frequently-employed tool in quantum information processing. We investigate the efficient implementation of twirling operations with minimal resources, without necessitating the ability to perform all possible unitary operations on the quantum system of interest. We present a general algebraic method allowing us to choose a set of - typically very few - unitary operators which, when applied randomly and repeatedly, produce the given twirling operation exponentially quickly. The method is applied…
We present a systematic construction of probes into the dynamics of isospectral ensembles of Hamiltonians by the notion of Isospectral twirling, expanding the scopes and methods of ref.[1]. The relevant ensembles of Hamiltonians are those defined by salient spectral probability distributions. The Gaussian Unitary Ensembles (GUE) describes a class of quantum chaotic Hamiltonians, while spectra corresponding to the Poisson and Gaussian Diagonal Ensemble (GDE) describe non chaotic, integrable dynamics. We compute the Isospectral twirling of several classes of important quantities in the analysis …
We show that the most important measures of quantum chaos like frame potentials, scrambling, Loschmidt echo, and out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) can be described by the unified framework of the isospectral twirling, namely the Haar average of a $k$-fold unitary channel. We show that such measures can then be always cast in the form of an expectation value of the isospectral twirling. In literature, quantum chaos is investigated sometimes through the spectrum and some other times through the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian generating the dynamics. We show that, by exploiting random matrix…
We show that the analysis of entanglement distillation protocols for qudits of arbitrary dimension $D$ benefits from applying basic concepts from number theory, since the set $\zdn$ associated to Bell diagonal states is a module rather than a vector space. We find that a partition of $\zdn$ into divisor classes characterizes the invariant properties of mixed Bell diagonal states under local permutations. We construct a very general class of recursion protocols by means of unitary operations implementing these local permutations. We study these distillation protocols depending on whether we use…
Due to the technical difficulty of building large quantum computers, it is important to be able to estimate how faithful a given implementation is to an ideal quantum computer. The common approach of completely characterizing the computation process via quantum process tomography requires an exponential amount of resources, and thus is not practical even for relatively small devices. We solve this problem by demonstrating that twirling experiments previously used to characterize the average fidelity of quantum memories efficiently can be easily adapted to estimate the average fidelity of the e…
We develop a procedure of generalized continuous dynamical decoupling (GCDD) for an ensemble of $d$-level systems (qudits), allowing one to protect the action of an arbitrary multi-qudit gate from general noise. We first present our GCDD procedure for the case of an arbitrary qudit and apply it to the case of a Hadamard gate acting on a qutrit. This is done using a model that, in principle, could be implemented using the three magnetic hyperfine states of the ground energy level of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ and laser beams whose intensities and phases are modulated according to our prescription. We s…
We propose and analyze a method to engineer effective interactions in an ensemble of d-level systems (qudits) driven by global control fields. In particular, we present (i) a necessary and sufficient condition under which a given interaction can be turned off (decoupled), (ii) the existence of a universal sequence that decouples any (cancellable) interaction, and (iii) an efficient algorithm to engineer a target Hamiltonian from an initial Hamiltonian (if possible). As examples, we provide a 6-pulse sequence that decouples effective spin-1 dipolar interactions and demonstrate that a spin- 1 Is…
We study the ability to control d-dimensional quantum systems (qudits) encoded in the hyperfine spin of alkali-metal atoms through the application of radio- and microwave-frequency magnetic fields in the presence of inhomogeneities in amplitude and detuning. Such a capability is essential to the design of robust pulses that mitigate the effects of experimental uncertainty and also for application to tomographic addressing of particular members of an extended ensemble. We study the problem of preparing an arbitrary state in the Hilbert space from an initial fiducial state. We prove that inhomog…
We show that entangling capacities based on the Jamiolkowski isomorphism may be used to place lower bounds on the communication capacities of arbitrary bipartite unitaries. Therefore, for these definitions, the relations which have been previously shown for two-qubit unitaries also hold for arbitrary dimensions. These results are closely related to the theory of the entanglement-assisted capacity of channels. We also present more general methods for producing ensembles for communication from initial states for entanglement creation.
Models of universal quantum computation in which the required interactions between register (computational) qubits are mediated by some ancillary system are highly relevant to experimental realisations of a quantum computer. We introduce such a universal model that employs a $d$-dimensional ancillary qudit. The ancilla-register interactions take the form of controlled displacements operators, with a displacement operator defined on the periodic and discrete lattice phase space of a qudit. We show that these interactions can implement controlled phase gates on the register by utilising geometri…
Unitary control of qudits can improve the collective spin squeezing of an atomic ensemble. Preparing the atoms in a state with large quantum fluctuations in magnetization strengthens the entangling Faraday interaction. The resulting increase in interatomic entanglement can be converted into metrologically useful spin squeezing. Further control can squeeze the internal atomic spin without compromising entanglement, providing an overall multiplicative factor in the collective squeezing. We model the effects of optical pumping and study the tradeoffs between enhanced entanglement and decoherence.…
We investigate the problem of optimally reversing the action of an arbitrary quantum channel C which acts independently on each component of an ensemble of n identically prepared d-dimensional quantum systems. In the limit of large ensembles, we construct the optimal reversing channel R* which has to be applied at the output ensemble state, to retrieve a smaller ensemble of m systems prepared in the input state, with the highest possible rate m/n. The solution is found by mapping the problem into the optimal reversal of Gaussian channels on quantum-classical continuous variable systems, which …
The need for high fidelity quantum teleportation arises in a variety of quantum algorithms and protocols. Unfortunately, conventional continuous variable teleportation schemes rely on EPR states that yield a fidelity that approaches unity only in the limit of an unphysical amount of squeezing. A new method, which utilizes an ensemble of single photon entangled states to teleport continuous variable states with fidelity approaching unity with finite resources was recently proposed by Andersen and Ralph [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 050504 (2013)]. We extend these ideas to consider the general case of …
Unitary $k$-designs are finite ensembles of unitary matrices that approximate the Haar distribution over unitary matrices. Several ensembles are known to be 2-designs, including the uniform distribution over the Clifford group, but no family of ensembles was previously known to form a 3-design. We prove that the Clifford group is a 3-design, showing that it is a better approximation to Haar-random unitaries than previously expected. Our proof strategy works for any distribution of unitaries satisfying a property we call Pauli 2-mixing and proceeds without the use of heavy mathematical machiner…
We present a solution of the problem of the optimal unambiguous comparison of two ensembles of unknown quantum states (psi_1)^k and (psi_2)^l. We consider two cases: 1) The two unknown states psi_1 and psi_2 are arbitrary states of qudits. 2) Alternatively, they are coherent states of a harmonic oscillator. For the case of coherent states we propose a simple experimental realization of the optimal "comparison" machine composed of a finite number of beam-splitters and a single photodetector.
We demonstrate quantum control of a large spin-angular momentum associated with the F=3 hyperfine ground state of 133Cs. A combination of time dependent magnetic fields and a static tensor light shift is used to implement near-optimal controls and map a fiducial state to a broad range of target states, with yields in the range 0.8-0.9. Squeezed states are produced also by an adiabatic scheme that is more robust against errors. Universal control facilitates the encoding and manipulation of qubits and qudits in atomic ground states, and may lead to improvement of some precision measurements.

We present a general methodology to obtain the basis of qudits which are admissible to Quantum Fourier Transform (QFT). We first study this method for qubits to characterize the ensemble that works for the Hadamard transformation (QFT for two dimension). In this regard we identify certain incompleteness in the result of Maitra and Parashar (IJQI, 2006). Next we characterize the ensemble of qutrits for which QFT is possible. Further, some theoretical results related to higher dimensions are also discussed.
Quantum bit or qubit is a two-level system, which builds the foundation for quantum computation, simulation, communication and sensing. Quantum states of higher dimension, i.e., qutrits (D = 3) and especially qudits (D = 4 or higher), offer significant advantages. Particularly, they can provide noise-resistant quantum cryptography, simplify quantum logic and improve quantum metrology. Flying and solid-state qudits have been implemented on the basis of photonic chips and superconducting circuits, respectively. However, there is still a lack of room-temperature qudits with long coherence time an…
Quantum algorithmics with single spins poses serious technological challenges such as precision fabrication, rapid decoherence, atomic-scale addressing and readout. To circumvent atomic-scale challenges, we examine the case of fully polarized mesoscopic spin ensembles (spin-coherent states) whose total angular momenta states map to qudit submanifolds. We show that in the limit where the size of the ensembles is small compared to their separation, it is possible to treat them as qubits with an effective coupling strength that scales with the number of spins. If the spins within each ensemble ar…

We study the statistics of quantum interference for completely positive maps. We calculate analytically the mean interference and its second moment for finite dimensional quantum systems interacting with a simple environment consisting of one or several spins (qudits). The joint propagation of the entire system is taken as unitary with an evolution operator drawn from the Circular Unitary Ensemble (CUE). We show that the mean interference decays with a power law as function of the dimension of the Hilbert space of the environment, with a power that depends on the temperature of the environment…
We study the statistical distribution of the ergotropy and of the efficiency of a single-qubit battery ad of a single-qubit Otto engine, respectively fuelled by random collisions. The single qubit, our working fluid, is assumed to exchange energy with two reservoirs, a non-equilibrium "hot" reservoir and a zero temperature cold reservoir. The interactions between the qubit and the reservoirs is described in terms of a collision model of open system dynamics. The qubit interacts with the non-equilibrium reservoir (a large ensemble of qudits all prepared in the same pure state) via random unitar…
We demonstrate that for an ensemble of qudits, subjected to collective decoherence in the form of perfectly correlated random SU(d) unitaries, quantum superpositions stored in the decoherence free subspace are fully immune against the removal of one particle. This provides a feasible scheme to protect quantum information encoded in the polarization state of a sequence of photons against both collective depolarization and one photon loss, and can be demonstrated with photon quadruplets using currently available technology.
Epsilon-nets and approximate unitary $t$-designs are natural notions that capture properties of unitary operations relevant for numerous applications in quantum information and quantum computing. The former constitute subsets of unitary channels that are epsilon-close to any unitary channel in the diamond norm. The latter are ensembles of unitaries that (approximately) recover Haar averages of polynomials in entries of unitary channels up to order $t$. In this work we establish quantitative connections between these two notions. Specifically, we prove that, for a fixed dimension $d$ of the Hil…
