Just as any state of a single qubit or 2-level system can be obtained from any other state by a rotation operator parametrized by three real Euler angles, we show how any state of an n-qubit or 2^n-level system can be obtained from any other by a compact unitary transformation with 2^(n+1)-1 real angles, 2^n of which are azimuthal-like and the rest polar-like. The results follow from a modeling of the Hilbert space of n-qubits by a minimal left ideal of an associative algebra. This representation is expected to be useful in the design of new compact control techniques or more efficient algorithms in quantum computing.
In this paper, we propose a scheme to realize three-qubit controlled phase gate and multiqubit controlled-NOT gate of one qubit simultaneously controlling n target qubit with four level quantum system in a cavity. Adjustment of level spacing during the gates implementation is not required. Implementation time for multiqubit controlled NOT gate is independent of number of qubit. Three-qubit phase gate is generalized to n-qubit phase gate with multiple control qubit and the number of steps (complexity) reduces linearly as compare to conventional gate decomposition method. Our scheme can be appli…
Universal quantum computing relies on high-fidelity entangling operations. Here we demonstrate that four coupled qubits can operate as a quantum gate, where two qubits control the operation on two target qubits (a four-qubit gate). This configuration can implement four different controlled two-qubit gates: two different entangling swap and phase operations, a phase operation distinguishing states of different parity, and the identity operation (idle quantum gate), where the choice of gate is set by the state of the control qubits. The device exploits quantum interference to control the operati…
The entanglement phenomenon on example of Smolin state of four qubits is discussed. This state is known as bound entangled state and the spin tomogram of the state is found in explicit form. The qubit portrait method is used the Bell inequality violation which provides another tool to prove the property of entanglement of the four-qubit state under consideration.
We propose a one-step scheme to implement a multiqubit controlled phase gate of one qubit simultaneously controlling multiple qubits with three-level atoms at distant nodes in coupled cavity arrays. The selective qubit-qubit couplings are achieved by adiabatically eliminating the atomic excited states and photonic states and the required phase shifts between the control qubit and any target qubit can be realized through suitable choices of the parameters of the external fields. Moreover, the effective model is robust against decoherence because neither the atoms nor the field modes during the …
The superposition principle of two qubit states is formulated as nonlinear addition rule of mean spinprojection onto three perpendicular directions. The explicit expression for the mean value determining the superposition state in term of the two initial pure states of the qubit is obtained. Possibility to check the superposition expression in experiments is discussed.
We show that the time evolution of density operator of open qubit system can always be described in terms of the Kraus representation. A general scheme on how to construct the Kraus operators for an open qubit system is proposed, which can be generalized to open higher dimensional quantum systems.
A protocol is proposed to generate singlet states of three logical qubits constructed by pairs of spins. Single and multiple operations of logical qubits are studied for the construction of an effective Hamiltonian, with which robust control fields are derived with invariant-based reverse engineering and optimal control. Moreover, systematic errors are further compensated by periodic modulation for better robustness. Furthermore, resistance to decoherence of the protocol is also shown with numerical simulations. Therefore, the protocol may provide useful perspectives for generations of logical…
Any two-qubit state can be represented geometrically by a steering ellipsoid inside the Bloch sphere. We extend this approach to represent any block positive two-qubit operator $B$. We derive a novel classification scheme based on the positivity of $\det B$ and $\det B^\mathrm{T_B}$; this shows that any ellipsoid inside the Bloch sphere must represent either a two-qubit state or a two-qubit entanglement witness. We focus on such witnesses and their corresponding ellipsoids, finding that properties such as witness optimality are naturally manifest in this geometric representation.
The rapid development in designs and fabrication techniques of superconducting qubits has helped making coherence times of qubits longer. In the near future, however, the radiative decay of a qubit into its control line will be a fundamental limitation, imposing a trade-off between fast control and long lifetime of the qubit. In this work, we successfully break this trade-off by strongly coupling another superconducting qubit along the control line. This second qubit, which we call a Josephson quantum filter (JQF), prevents the qubit from emitting microwave photons and thus suppresses its rela…
In this paper, we propose a scheme to implement two-qubit logic gates with a controllable and selective interaction in a scalable superconducting circuit of charge qubits. A nanomechanical resonator is used as a data bus to connect qubits. It is indicated that a controllable interaction between qubits can be obtained by making use of the data bus. It is shown that a selective interaction between qubits can be realized when many qubits are involved in the system under our consideration.
Conditional quantum oscillations are investigated for quantum gate operations in superconducting flux qubits. We present an effective Hamiltonian which describes a conditional quantum oscillation in two-qubit systems. Rabi-type quantum oscillations are discussed in implementing conditional quantum oscillations to quantum gate operations. Two conditional quantum oscillations depending on the states of control qubit can be synchronized to perform controlled-gate operations by varying system parameters. It is shown that the conditional quantum oscillations with their frequency synchronization mak…
Quantum state on Bloch sphere for superconducting charge qubit, phase qubit and flux qubit for all time in absence of external drive is stable to initial state. By driving the qubits, approximation of charge and flux Hamiltonian lead to quantum state rotation in Bloch sphere around an axis completely differ from rotation vector of exact Hamiltonian. The trajectory of quantum state for phase qubit for approximated and exact Hamiltonian is the same but the expectation of quantum observable has considerable errors as two other qubits. microwave drive control is designed for approximated Hamiltoni…
In this work, we propose a scheme to design the time evolution of the entropy of entanglement between two qubits. It is shown an explicit accurate solution for the inverse problem of determining the time dependence of the coupling constant from a user-defined dynamical entanglement function. Such an active control of entanglement can be implemented in many different physical implementations of coupled qubits, and we briefly comment on the use of interacting flux qubits.
In circuit-based quantum computing, the available gate set typically consists of single-qubit gates acting on each individual qubit and at least one entangling gate between pairs of qubits. In certain physical architectures, however, some qubits may be 'hidden' and lacking direct addressability through dedicated control and readout lines, for instance because of limited on-chip routing capabilities, or because the number of control lines becomes a limiting factor for many-qubit systems. In this case, no single-qubit operations can be applied to the hidden qubits and their state cannot be measu…
Majorana stars, the $2j$ spin coherent states that are orthogonal to a spin-$j$ state, offer a visualization of general quantum states and may disclose deep structures in quantum states and their evolutions. In particular, the genuine tripartite entanglement - the three-tangle of a symmetric three-qubit state, which can be mapped to a spin-3/2 state, is measured by the normalized product of the distance between the Majorana stars. However, the Majorana representation cannot applied to general non-symmetric $n$-qubit states. We show that after a series of SL$(2,\mathbb{C})$ transformations, non…
The Grassmann representation for the system of qubits, is considered. The treatment is based on natural description of the qubits system as fermions and uses coherent states of fermions. The quantum logic gates are represented in two forms - by symbols of operations and by partial differential operators on the symbols of the states. The considered representation of quantum logic is called as superlogic. The examples are given for classical logic operations of negation, conjunction, disjunction and for reversible three-bit Toffoli gate and its quantum generalization - three-qbit Deutsch gate. T…
It is proposed to map the quantum information qubit not to individual spin 1/2 states, but to the collective spin states being eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian including spin-spin interactions, which may be not small. Such an approach allows to introduce more stable calculation basis for quantum computer based on the solid state NMR systems.
Quantum control for error correction is critical for the practical use of quantum computers. We address quantum optimal control for single-shot multi-qubit gates by framing as a feasibility problem for the Hamiltonian model and then solving with standard global-optimization software. Our approach yields faster high-fidelity ($>$99.99\%) single-shot three-qubit-gate control than obtained previously, and our method has enabled us to solve the quantum-control problem for a fast high-fidelity four-qubit gate.
Hybrid quantum gates have recently drawn considerable attention. They play significant roles in connecting quantum information processors with qubits of different encoding and have important applications in the transmission of quantum states between a quantum processor and a quantum memory. In this work, we propose a single-step implementation of a multi-target-qubit controlled-NOT gate with one superconducting (SC) qubit simultaneously controlling $n$ target cat-state qubits. In this proposal, the gate is implemented with $n$ microwave cavities coupled to a three-level SC qutrit. The two logi…
We generalize the control power of a perfect controlled teleportation of an entangled three-qubit pure state, suggested by Li and Ghose [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 90}, 052305 (2014)], to the control power of a general controlled teleportation of a multiqubit pure state. Thus, we define the minimal control power, and calculate the values of the minimal control power for a class of general three-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states and the three-qubit W class whose states have zero three-tangles. Moreover, we show that the standard three-qubit GHZ state and the standard three-qubit W state hav…
We investigate the feasibility of single-shot Toffoli- and Fredkin-gate realizations in qubit arrays with Heisenberg-type exchange interactions between adjacent qubits. As follows from the Lie-algebraic criteria of controllability, such an array is rendered completely controllable -- equivalent to allowing universal quantum computation -- by a Zeeman-like control field with two orthogonal components acting on a single "actuator" qubit. Adopting this local-control setting, we start our analysis with piecewise-constant control fields and determine the global maxima of the relevant figure of meri…
We demonstrate a robust implementation of a deterministic linear-optical Controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate for single-photon two-qubit quantum logic. A polarization Sagnac interferometer with an embedded 45$^{\circ}$-oriented dove prism is used to enable the polarization control qubit to act on the momentum (spatial) target qubit of the same photon. The CNOT gate requires no active stabilization because the two spatial modes share a common path, and it is used to entangle the polarization and momentum qubits.
Execution of quantum algorithms requires a quantum computer architecture with a dedicated quantum instruction set that is capable of supporting translation of workloads into actual quantum operations acting on the qubits. State-of-the-art qubit control setups typically utilize general purpose test instruments such as arbitrary waveform generators (AWGs) to generate a limited set of waveforms or pulses. These waveforms are precomputed and stored prior to execution, and then used to produce control pulses during execution. Besides their prohibitive cost and limited scalability, such instruments …
Phase estimation is used in many quantum algorithms, particularly in order to estimate energy eigenvalues for quantum systems. When using a single qubit as the probe (used to control the unitary we wish to estimate the eigenvalue of), it is not possible to measure the phase with a minimum mean-square error. In standard methods, there would be a logarithmic (in error) number of control qubits needed in order to achieve this minimum error. Here show how to perform this measurement using only two control qubits, thereby reducing the qubit requirements of the quantum algorithm. Our method correspo…
A quantum network is a promising quantum many-body system because of its tailored geometry and controllable interaction. Here, we propose an external control scheme for the qubit-photon interaction and multiqubit reset in a dissipative quantum network, which comprises superconducting circuit chains with microwave drives and filter-filter couplings. The traditional multiqubit reset of the quantum network requires physically disconnected qubits to prevent their entanglement. However, we use an original effect of dissipation, i.e., consuming the entanglement generated by qubits' interaction, to a…
We quantitatively analyze and evaluate the controller's power in $N$-qubit controlled teleportation schemes. We calculate the minimum control power required to ensure the controller's authority such that the teleportation fidelity without the controller's permission is no more than the classical bound. We revisit several typical controlled teleportation schemes from the controller's point of view and evaluate the control power in these schemes. We find that for teleporting arbitrary N-qubit states, each controller should control at least N bits of useful information to ensure his/her authority…
We investigate the scheme for controlling information characterized by Von-Neumann entropy and the stationary state entanglement characterized by concurrence of two solid state qubits in the collective dephasing channel. It is shown that the local maximal value of the stationary state concurrence always corresponds to the local minimal value of information. We also propose a scheme for remotely controlling the entanglement of two solid state qubits against the collective dephasing. This idea may open a door to remotely suppress the detrimental effects of decoherence.
Non-adiabatic holonomic quantum gate in decoherence-free subspaces is of greatly practical importance due to its built-in fault tolerance, coherence stabilization virtues, and short run-time. Here we propose some compact schemes to implement two- and three-qubit controlled unitary quantum gates and Fredkin gate. For the controlled unitary quantum gates, the unitary operator acting on the target qubit is an arbitrary single-qubit gate operation. The controlled quantum gates can be directly implemented using non-adiabatic holonomy in decoherence-free subspaces and the required resource for the d…
We present a way for implementing an n-qubit controlled-rotation gate with three-level superconducting qubit systems in cavity QED. The two logical states of a qubit are represented by the two lowest levels of each system while a higher-energy level is used for the gate implementation. The method operates essentially by preparing a $W$ state conditioned on the states of the control qubits, creating a single photon in the cavity mode, and then performing an arbitrary rotation on the states of the target qubit with assistance of the cavity photon. It is interesting to note that the basic operati…
The controlled-NOT gate and controlled square-root NOT gate play an important role in quantum algorithm. This article reports the experimental results of these two universal quantum logic gates (controlled square-root NOT gate and controlled-NOT gate) on a 7-qubit NMR quantum computer. Further, we propose a simple experimental method to measure and correct the error in the controlled phase-shift gate, which is helpful to construct a more perfect phase-shift gate experimentally and can also be used in more qubits discrete Fourier transformation.
We investigate quantum control of the dissipation of entanglement under environmental decoherence. We show by means of a simple two-qubit model that standard control methods - coherent or open-loop control - will not in general prevent entanglement loss. However, we propose a control method utilising a Wiseman-Milburn feedback/measurement control scheme which will effectively negate environmental entanglement dissipation.
We investigate the combinatorial structures of a holonomic controlled quantum gate based on toric varieties. In particular, we in detail discuss the combinatorial structures of a two-qubit holonomic controlled quantum gate on a two-qubit, a three-qubit, and a four-qubit quantum states. Our results show interesting relations between toric varieties of qubit systems and action of a two-qubit holonomic quantum gate on multi-qubit states.
We propose how to realize a multiqubit tunable phase gate of one qubit simultaneously controlling $n$ qubits with four-level quantum systems in a cavity or coupled to a resonator. Each of the $n$ two-qubit controlled-phase (CP) gates involved in this multiqubit phase gate has a shared control qubit but a {\it different} target qubit. In this propose, the two lowest levels of each system represent the two logical states of a qubit while the two higher-energy intermediate levels are used for the gate implementation. The method presented here operates essentially by creating a single photon throu…
We prove that the vast majority of symmetric states of qubits can be decomposed in a unique way into a superposition of spin 1/2 coherent states. For the case of two qubits, the proposed decomposition reproduces the Schmidt decomposition and therefore, in the case of a higher number of qubits, can be considered as its generalization. We analyze the geometrical aspects of the proposed representation and its invariant properties under the action of local unitary and local invertible transformations. As an application, we identify the most general classes of entanglement and representative states…

Quantum control of systems plays important roles in modern science and technology. The ultimate goal of quantum control is to achieve high fidelity universal control in the time-optimal way. Although high fidelity universal control has been reported in various quantum systems, experimental implementation of time-optimal universal control remains elusive. Here we report the experimental realization of time-optimal universal control of spin qubits in diamond. By generalizing a recent method for solving quantum brachistochrone equations [X. Wang, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 170501 (2015)], we o…
Quantum gates (unitary gates) on physical systems are usually implemented by controlling the Hamiltonian dynamics. When full descriptions of the Hamiltonians parameters is available, the set of implementable quantum gates is easily characterised by quantum control theory. In many real systems, however, the Hamiltonians may include unknown parameters due to the difficulty of precise measurements or instability of the system. In this paper, we consider the situation that some parameters of the Hamiltonian are unknown, but we still want to perform a robust control of a quantum gate irrespectively…
We present a way to realize a $n$-qubit controlled phase gate with superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) by coupling them to a superconducting resonator. In this proposal, the two logical states of a qubit are represented by the two lowest levels of a SQUID. An intermediate level of each SQUID is utilized to facilitate coherent control and manipulation of quantum states of the qubits. It is interesting to note that a $n$-qubit controlled phase gate can be achieved with $n$ SQUIDs by successively applying a $π/2$ Jaynes-Cummings pulse to each of the $n-1$ control SQUIDs before a…
A theoretical scheme for bidirectional swapping quantum controlled teleportation is presented using the entanglement property of maximally entangled five-qubit state, i.e., Alice wants to transmit a entangled state of particle a to Bob and Bob wants to transmit a entangled state of particle b to Alice via the control of the supervisor Charlie.
We propose an approach to realize an $n$-qubit controlled-$U$ gate with superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) in cavity QED. In this approach, the two lowest levels of a SQUID represent the two logical states of a qubit while a higher-energy intermediate level serves the gate manipulation. Our method operates essentially by creating a single photon through one of the control SQUIDs and then performing an arbitrary unitrary transformation on the target SQUID with the assistance of the cavity photon. In addition, we show that the method can be applied to implement an $n $% -qubit…

A three-qubit 13C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system for quantum information processing, based on the malonic acid molecule, is used to demonstrate high-fidelity universal quantum control via strongly-modulating radio-frequency pulses. This control is achieved in the strong-coupling regime, in which the timescales of selective qubit addressing and of two-qubit interactions are comparable.
We apply quantum control techniques to control a large spin chain by only acting on two qubits at one of its ends, thereby implementing universal quantum computation by a combination of quantum gates on the latter and swap operations across the chain. It is shown that the control sequences can be computed and implemented efficiently. We discuss the application of these ideas to physical systems such as superconducting qubits in which full control of long chains is challenging.
A theory of dynamical control by modulation for optimal decoherence reduction is developed. It is based on the non-Markovian Euler-Lagrange equation for the energy-constrained field that minimizes the average dephasing rate of a qubit for any given dephasing spectrum.
We present a theoretical study of the optimal control of a qubit interacting with a structured environment. We consider a model system in which the bath is a bosonic reservoir at zero temperature and the qubit frequency is the only control parameter. Using optimal control techniques, we show the extent to which qubit population and relaxation effects can be manipulated. The reachable qubit states by a shaped control with a fixed maximum intensity are found numerically. We analyze the role of standard control mechanisms and the structure of the set of reachable states with respect to the coupli…
We explore reachable sets of open $n$-qubit quantum systems, the coherent parts of which are under full unitary control and that have just one qubit whose Markovian noise amplitude can be modulated in time such as to provide an additional degree of incoherent control. In particular, adding bang-bang control of amplitude damping noise (non-unital) allows the dynamic system to act transitively on the entire set of density operators. This means one can transform any initial quantum state into any desired target state. Adding switchable bit-flip noise (unital), on the other hand, suffices to explo…
Quantum processors rely on classical electronic controllers to manipulate and read out the quantum state. As the performance of the quantum processor improves, non-idealities in the classical controller can become the performance bottleneck for the whole quantum computer. To prevent such limitation, this paper presents a systematic study of the impact of the classical electrical signals on the qubit fidelity. All operations, i.e. single-qubit rotations, two-qubit gates and read-out, are considered, in the presence of errors in the control electronics, such as static, dynamic, systematic and ra…
We study the problem of remote control of quantum correlations (discord) in a sub-system of two qubits (receiver) via the parameters of the initial state of another sub-system of three qubits (sender) connected with the receiver by the inhomogeneous spin-1/2 chain. We propose two parameters characterizing the creatable correlations. The first one is the discord between the receiver and the rest of spin-1/2 chain, it concerns the mutual correlations between these two subsystems. The second parameter is the discord between the two nodes of the receiver and describes the correlations inside of th…
An n-qubit quantum register can in principle be completely controlled by operating on a single qubit that interacts with the register via an appropriate fixed interaction. We consider a hypothetical system consisting of n spin-1/2 nuclei that interact with an electron spin via a magnetic interaction. We describe algorithms that measure non-trivial joint observables on the register by acting on the control spin only. For large n this is not an efficient model for universal quantum computation but it can be modified to an efficient one if one allows n possible positions of the control particle. …
