New orderings for effective mass Hamiltonians and associated wavefunction matching conditions at abrupt heterojunctions

We show that for a given setting of the Von Roos ambiguity parameters, it is not required that the Morrow and Brownstein condition be satisfied to achieve physically acceptable transport properties at abrupt heterojunctions. We have derived two such settings and corresponding envelope function matching conditions.

Self-adjoint Dirac type Hamiltonians in one space dimension with a mass jump

Physical self-adjoint extensions and their spectra of the one-dimensional Dirac type Hamiltonian operator in which both the mass and velocity are constant except for a finite jump at one point of the real axis are correctly found. Different boundary conditions on envelope wave functions are studied, and the limiting case of equal masses (with no mass jump) is reviewed. Transport across one-dimensional heterostructures described by the Dirac equation is considered.

Displacement operator for quantum systems with position-dependent mass

A translation operator is introduced to describe the quantum dynamics of a position-dependent mass particle in a null or constant potential. From this operator, we obtain a generalized form of the momentum operator as well as a unique commutation relation for $\hat x$ and $\hat p_γ$. The kinetic Hamiltonian with position-dependent mass

In the present paper we examine in a systematic way the most relevant orderings of pure kinetic Hamiltonians for five different position-dependent mass (PDM) profiles: soliton-like, reciprocal quadratic and biquadratic, exponential and parabolic. As a result of the non-commutativity between momentum and position operators, a diversity of effective potentials is generated.
