We demonstrate how quantum entanglement can be used for precision frequency measurements with trapped ions. In particular, we show how to suppress linear Zeeman shifts in optical frequency measurements by using maximally entangled states of two ions even if the individual ions do not have any field-independent transition. In addition, this technique allows for an accurate measurement of small external field frequency shifts such as the electric quadrupole shift which are important for ion clock experiments.
The presence of loss limits the precision of an approach to phase measurement using maximally entangled states, also referred to as NOON states. A calculation using a simple beam-splitter model of loss shows that, for all nonzero values L of the loss, phase measurement precision degrades with increasing number N of entangled photons for N sufficiently large. For L above a critical value of approximately 0.785, phase measurement precision degrades with increasing N for all values of N. For L near zero, phase measurement precision improves with increasing N down to a limiting precision of approx…
Standard quantum cryptographic protocols are not secure if one assumes that nonlocal hidden variables exist and can be measured with arbitrary precision. The security can be restored if one of the communicating parties randomly switches between two standard protocols.
Quantum metrology with entangled states in realistic noisy environments always suffers from decoherence. Therefore, the measurement precision is greatly reduced. Here we applied the dynamical decoupling method to protect the $N$-qubit quantum metrology protocol and successfully revived the scaling of the measurement precision as ${N^{-k}}$ with $k\in \left[{5/6,11/12}\right]$. The degree of the precision revival, as determined by the noise spectrum distribution, indicates that the performance of the protected protocol can be further improved by controlling the noise spectrum. Such a protected …
In this paper, we describe how to realize conditional frequency entanglement swapping and to produce probabilisticly a three-photon frequency entangled state from two pairs of frequency entangled states by using an Acoustic-Optical-Modulator. Both schemes are very simple and may be implementable in practice.
The high degree of control available over individual atoms enables precision tests of fundamental physical concepts. In this Letter, we experimentally study how precision measurements can be improved by preparing entangled states immune to the dominant source of decoherence. Using \Ca ions, we explicitly demonstrate the advantage from entanglement on a precision test of local Lorentz invariance for the electron. Reaching the quantum projection noise limit set by quantum mechanics, we observe for bipartite entangled states the expected gain of a factor of two in the precision. Under specific co…
High-precision nonlocal temporal correlation identification in the entangled photon pairs is critical to measure the time offset between remote independent time scales for many quantum information applications. The first nonlocal correlation identification was reported in 2009, which extracts the time offset via the algorithm of iterative fast Fourier transformations (FFTs) and their inverse. The least identification resolution is restricted by the peak identification threshold of the algorithm, and thus the time offset calculation precision is limited. In this paper, an improvement for the id…
The quantum characteristics of sum-frequency process in an optical cavity with an input signal optical beam, which is a half of entangled optical beams, are analyzed. The calculated results show that the quantum properties of the signal beam can be maintained after its frequency is conversed during the intracavity nonlinear optical interaction. The frequency-conversed output signal beam is still in an entangled state with the retained other half of initial entangled beams. The resultant quantum correlation spectra and the parametric dependences of the correlations on the initial squeezing fact…
Precision measurements are important across all fields of science. In particular, optical phase measurements can be used to measure distance, position, displacement, acceleration and optical path length. Quantum entanglement enables higher precision than would otherwise be possible. We demonstrate an optical phase measurement with an entangled four photon interference visibility greater than the threshold to beat the standard quantum limit--the limit attainable without entanglement. These results open the way for new high-precision measurement applications.
A two-step quantum key distribution protocol using frequency and polarization doubly entangled photons is proposed. In this protocol, information is encoded by a unitary operation on each of the two doubly entangled photons and sent from Alice to Bob in two steps. State measurement device is designed. The security of the communication is analyzed.
A monochromatic laser pumping a parametric down conversion crystal generates frequency entangled photon pairs. We study this experimentally by addressing such frequency entangled photons at telecommunication wavelengths (around 1550 nm) with fiber optics components such as electro-optic phase modulators and narrow band frequency filters. The theory underlying our approach is developed by introducing the notion of frequency bin entanglement. Our results show that the phase modulators address coherently up to eleven frequency bins, leading to an interference pattern which can violate a Bell ineq…
A frequency-multiplexed entangled photon pair and a high-dimensional hyperentangled photon pair are useful to realize a high-capacity quantum communication. A biphoton frequency comb (BFC) with entanglement can be used to prepare both states. We demonstrate polarization entangled BFCs with over 1400 frequency modes, which is approximately two orders of magnitude larger than those of earlier entangled BFCs, by placing a singly resonant periodically poled LiNbO3 waveguide resonator within a Sagnac loop. The BFCs are demonstrated by measuring the joint spectral intensity, cross-correlation, and a…
In the paper [1], authors claim that the scheme for entanglement swapping using an acoustic-optical modulator [2] is flaw. In this reply, we show there is a trivial mistake in the scheme [2], but the main conclusion is still correct, that is, the acoustic-optical modulator can be used to manipulate the frequency-entangled state.
We introduce a novel time-frequency quantum key distribution (TFQKD) scheme based on photon pairs entangled in these two conjugate degrees of freedom. The scheme uses spectral detection and phase modulation to enable measurements in the temporal basis by means of time-to-frequency conversion. This allows large-alphabet encoding to be implemented with realistic components. A general security analysis for TFQKD with binned measurements reveals a close connection with finite-dimensional QKD protocols and enables analysis of the effects of dark counts on the secure key size.
Quantum spectroscopy was performed using the frequency-entangled broadband photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. An absorptive sample was placed in front of the idler photon detector, and the frequency of signal photons was resolved by a diffraction grating. The absorption spectrum of the sample was measured by counting the coincidences, and the result is in agreement with the one measured by a conventional spectrophotometer with a classical light source.
Time-frequency entangled photons constitute an important resource for a plethora of applications across the diverse quantum technology landscape. Thus, efficient and tunable setups for the generation of entangled photons are requisite for modern quantum technologies. In this work, we propose a generic cavity QED setup designed for on-demand generation of time-frequency entangled photon pairs, with each photon propagating in a separate waveguide. We outline a potential incarnation of this setup in the microwave superconducting circuit QED architecture. We derive and numerically solve the set of…
We explore the advantages offered by twin light beams produced in parametric down-conversion for precision measurement. The symmetry of these bipartite quantum states, even under losses, suggests that monitoring correlations between the divergent beams permits a high-precision inference of any symmetry-breaking effect, e.g. fiber birefringence. We show that the quantity of entanglement is not the key feature for such an instrument. In a lossless setting, scaling of precision at the ultimate `Heisenberg' limit is possible with photon counting alone. Even as photon losses approach 100% the preci…
We present a scheme to generate the frequency multiplexed entangled (FME) single photons based on the entanglement between two species atomic mixture ensemble. The write and reads fields driven according to a certain timing sequence, the generation of FME single photons can be repeated until success is achieved. The source might have significant applications in wavelength division multiplexing quantum key distribution.
We demonstrate experimentally a new technique to control the bandwidth and the type of frequency correlations (correlation, anticorrelation, and even uncorrelation) of entangled photons generated by spontaneous parametric downconversion. The method is based on the control of the group velocities of the interacting waves. This technique can be applied in any nonlinear medium and frequency band of interest. It is also demonstrated that this technique helps enhance the quality of polarization entanglement even when femtosecond pulses are used as a pump.
Quantum entanglement between qudits - the d-dimensional version of qubits - is relevant for advanced quantum information processing and provides deeper insights in the nature of quantum correlations. Encoding qudits in the frequency modes of photon pairs produced by continuous parametric down-conversion enables access to high-dimensional states. By shaping the energy spectrum of entangled photons, we demonstrate the creation, characterization and manipulation of entangled qudits with dimension up to 4. Their respective density matrices are reconstructed by quantum state tomography. For qubits …
Pairs of photons entangled in their time-frequency degree of freedom are of great interest in quantum optics research and applications, due to their relative ease of generation and their high capacity for encoding information. Here we analyze, both theoretically and experimentally, the behavior of phase-insensitive spectrally-resolved interferences arising from two pairs of time-frequency entangled photons. At its core, this is a multimode entanglement swapping experiment, whereby a spectrally resolved joint measurement on the idler photons from both pairs results in projecting the signal phot…
In the recent years important experimental advances in resonant electro-optic modulators as high efficient sources for coherent frequency combs and as devices for quantum information transfer have been realized, where strong optical and microwave mode coupling were achieved. These features suggest electro-optic based devices as candidates for entangled optical frequency comb sources. In the present I study the generation of entangled optical frequency combs in mm-sized resonant electro-optic modulators. These devices profit from the experimentally proven advantages such as nearly constant opti…
The observation of the so-called dispersion cancelation (Opt. Express 17, 19244, 2009) and temporal phase modulation (Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 163601, 2009) of paired photons is generally attributed to the presence of frequency entanglement between two frequency anticorrelated photons. In this paper, it is shown that by introducing the appropriate amount of chromatic dispersion or phase modulation between non-entangled photons, it is also possible to observe these effects. Indeed, it is found that the relevant characteristic for the observation of dispersion cancelation or the cancelation of temp…
We propose the generation of entangled states with trapped calcium ions using a combination of an rf dressed state and a spin dependent force. Using this method, a decoherence-free entangled state of rf qubits can be directly generated and ideally its fidelity is close to unity. We demonstrate an rf entangled state with a fidelity of 0.68, which has a coherence time of more than 200 ms by virtue of the fact that it is an eigenstate with energy gaps between adjacent levels.Using the same technique, we also produce a qutrit-qutrit entangled state with a fidelity of 0.77, which exceeds the thresh…
We demonstrate a novel scheme to generate frequency-entangled qudits with dimension number higher than 10 and to distribute them over optical fibers of 15 km in total length. This scheme combines the technique of spectral engineering of biphotons generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion and the technique of spectrally resolved Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. We characterized the comb-like spectral correlation structures of the qudits by time of arrival measurement and correlated spectral intensity measurement. The generation and distribution of the distinct entangled frequency modes ma…
Integrated photonics is becoming an ideal platform for generating two-photon entangled states with high brightness, high stability and scalability. This high brightness and high quality of photon pair sources encourages researchers further to study and manipulate multi-photon entangled states. Here, we experimentally demonstrate frequency-degenerate four-photon entangled state generation based on a single silicon nanowire 1 cm in length. The polarization encoded entangled states are generated with the help of a Sagnac loop using additional optical elements. The states are analyzed using quantu…
The problems associated with practical implementation of the scheme proposed for preparation of arbitrary states of polarization ququarts based on biphotons are discussed. The influence of frequency dispersion effects are considered, and the necessity of group velocities dispersion compensation in the frequency non-degenerate case even for continuous pumping is demonstrated. A method for this compensation is proposed and implemented experimentally. Physical restrictions on the quality of prepared two-photon states are revealed.
A recent theoretical paper [1] proposes a scheme for entanglement swapping utilizing acousto-optic modulators without requiring a Bell-state measurement. In this comment, we show that the proposal is flawed and no entanglement swapping can occur without measurement.
Radio-frequency phase modulation of frequency entangled photons leads to a two-photon interference pattern in the frequency domain. In recent experiments, the pattern was measured with narrow-band frequency filters which select photons belonging to a given frequency bin. Here we show how photons can be grouped into even and odd frequencies by using periodic frequency filters called interleavers. In our theoretical analysis we show how this reduces the high-dimensional photon state to an effective two-dimensional state. This is of interest for applications such as quantum cryptography or low-di…
We present a technique to completely characterise the spectral-temporal wave function of a broadband photon pair using spectral-shearing interferometry. Our method is fully self-referencing and is generalisable across a wide range of wavelengths. To demonstrate, we generate an entangled photon pair with controllable time-frequency entanglement and perform a full reconstruction. These results allow previously unobservable features of quantum states to be measured and utilised for the first time. We foresee this will unlock new opportunities in high-dimensional quantum technology, enabling the d…
Parallelization of frequency domain quantum gates: manipulation and distribution of frequency-entangled photon pairs generated by a 21 GHz silicon micro-resonator
We investigate the relation between indistinguishability and quantum entanglement in Hong- Ou-Mandel-interference experiments theoretically and relate these quantum mechanical principles to the theorem of entanglement monogamy. Employing Glaubers theory of quantum coherence we compute the detection statistics in HOM-interference of frequency entangled photons, and find a new additional term in the coincidence detection probability, which is related to the spectral indistinguishability of the considered photons that arises from finite bandwidth effects, and therefore is relevant in the limit of…
In this Letter, the generation of 1.5 μm discrete frequency entangled two-photon state is realized based on a piece of commercial polarization maintaining fiber (PMF). It is connected with a polarization beam splitter to realize a modified Sagnac fiber loop (MSFL). Correlated two-photon states are generated through spontaneous four wave-mixing process along the two propagation directions of the MSFL, and output from the MSFL with orthogonal polarizations. The quantum interference of them is realized through a 45° polarization collimation between polarization axes of PMFs inside and outside the…
Weak-value amplification (WVA) provides a way for amplified detection of a tiny physical signal at the expense of a lower detection probability. Despite this trade-off, due to its robustness against certain types of noise, WVA has advantages over conventional measurements in precision metrology. Moreover, it has been shown that WVA-based metrology can reach the Heisenberg-limit using entangled resources, but preparing macroscopic entangled resources remains challenging. Here we demonstrate a novel WVA scheme based on iterative interactions, achieving the Heisenberg-limited precision scaling wi…
We consider estimating a small transverse displacement of an optical beam over a line-of-sight propagation path: a problem that has numerous important applications ranging from establishing a lasercom link, single-molecule tracking, guided munition, to atomic force microscopy. We establish the ultimate quantum limit of the accuracy of sensing a beam displacement, and quantify the classical-quantum gap. Further, using normal-mode decomposition of the Fresnel propagation kernel, and insights from recent work on entanglement-assisted sensing, we find a near-term realizable multi-spatio-temporal-m…
We present an all fiber source of frequency entangled photon pairs by using four wave mixing in a Sagnac fiber loop. Special care is taken to suppress the impurity of the frequency entanglement by cooling the fiber and by matching the polarization modes of the photon pairs counter-propagating in the fiber loop. Coincidence detection of signal and idler photons, which are created in pair and in different spatial modes of the fiber loop, shows the quantum interference in the form of spatial beating, while the single counts of the individual signal (idler) photons keep constant. When the producti…
Optical interferometry is amongst the most sensitive techniques for precision measurement. By increasing the light intensity a more precise measurement can usually be made. However, in some applications the sample is light sensitive. By using entangled states of light the same precision can be achieved with less exposure of the sample. This concept has been demonstrated in measurements of fixed, known optical components. Here we use two-photon entangled states to measure the concentration of the blood protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) in an aqueous buffer solution. We use an opto-fluidic devi…
Entanglement, describing the inseparability of a quantum multiparty system, is one of the most intriguing features of quantum mechanics. Violation of Bell inequality, for ruling out the possibility of local hidden variable theories, is commonly used as a strong witness for quantum entanglement. In previous Bell test experiments with photonic entanglement based on two-photon coincidence measurement, the photon temporal wave packets are absorbed completely by the detectors. That is, the photon coherence time is much shorter than the detection time window. Here we demonstrate generation of freque…
Exploitation of time-frequency properties of SPDC photon pairs has recently found application in many endeavors. Complete characterization and control over the states in this degree of freedom is of paramount importance for the development of optical quantum technologies. This is achieved by accessing information both on the joint spectral amplitude and the joint spectral phase. Here we propose a novel scheme based on the MICE algorithm, which aims at reconstructing the joint spectral phase by adopting a multi-shear approach, making the technique suitable for noisy environments. We report on s…
Quantum entanglement offers the possibility of making measurements beyond the classical limit, however some issues still need to be overcome before it can be applied in realistic lossy systems. Recent work has used the quantum Fisher information (QFI) to show that entangled coherent states (ECSs) may be useful for this purpose as they combine sub-classical phase precision capabilities with robustness (Joo et al., 2011). However, to date no effective scheme for measuring a phase in lossy systems using an ECS has been devised. Here we present a scheme that does just this. We show how one could m…
We have theoretically investigated the possibility of using any of several continuous-variable Bell-type inequalities - for which the dichotomic measurements are achieved with coarse-grained quadrature (homodyne) measurements - in a multi-party configuration where each participant is given a section, in the frequency domain, of the output of an optical parametric oscillator which has been synchronously-pumped with a frequency comb. Such light sources are undergoing intense study due to their novel properties, including the potential for production of light entangled in many hundreds of physica…
An entangled photon experiment has been performed with a large variation of the temperature of the non-linear crystal generating the entangled pair by spontaneous downconversion. The photon pairs are separated by a nonpolarizing beamsplitter, and the polarization modes are mixed by half wave plates. The correlation function of the coincidences is studied as a function of the temperature. In the presence of a narrow interference filter we observe that the correlation changes between -1 and +1 about seven times within a temperature interval of about 30 degrees C. We show that the common simplifi…
High-precision time transfer is of fundamental interest in physics and metrology. Quantum time transfer technologies that use frequency-entangled pulses and their coincidence detection have been proposed, offering potential enhancements in precision and better guarantees of security. In this paper, we describe a fiber-optic two-way quantum time transfer experiment. Using quantum nonlocal dispersion cancellation, time transfer over a 20-km fiber link achieves a time deviation of 922 fs over 5 s and 45 fs over 40960 s. The time transfer accuracy as a function of fiber lengths from 15 m to 20 km …
We demonstrate the capability to discretize the frequency spectrum of broadband energy-time entangled photons by means of a spatial light modulator to encode qudits in various bases. Exemplarily, we implement three different discretization schemes, namely frequency bins, time bins and Schmidt modes. Entangled qudits up to dimension $d=4$ are then revealed by two-photon interference experiments with visibilities violating a $d$-dimensional Bell inequality.

Frequency-Resolved Simulations of Highly Entangled Biphoton States: Beyond the Single-Pair Approximation. II. Application to Entanglement-based Quantum Key Distribution
Quantum optical microcombs in integrated ring resonators generate entangled photon pairs over many spectral modes, and allow the preparation of high dimensional qudit states. Ideally, those sources should be programmable and have a high generation rate, with comb lines tightly spaced for the implementation of efficient qudit gates based on electro-optic frequency mixing. While these requirements cannot all be satisfied by a single resonator device, for which there is a trade-off between high generation rate and tight bin spacing, a promising strategy is the use of multiple resonators, each gen…
We demonstrate experimentally the tunable control of the joint spectrum, i.e. waveform and degree of frequency correlations, of paired photons generated in spontaneous parametric downconversion. This control is mediated by the spatial shape of the pump beam in a type-I noncollinear configuration. We discuss the applicability of this technique to other sources of frequency entangled photons, such as electromagnetically induced Raman transitions.
