Noise correlations, such as those observable in the time of flight images of a released cloud, are calculated for hard-core bosonic (HCB) atoms. We find that the standard mapping of HCB systems onto spin-1/2 XY models fails in application to computation of noise correlations. This is due to the contribution of multiply occupied virtual states to noise correlations in bosonic systems. Such states do not exist in spin models. We use these correlations to explore quantum coherence of the ground states and re-address the relationship between the peaks present in noise correlation and the Mott phase. Our analysis points to distinctive new experimental signatures of the Mott phase. The importance of these correlations is illustrated in an example of a quasiperiodic potential that exhibits a localization transition. In this case, in contrast to the momentum distribution, the noise correlations reveal the presence of quasiperiodic order in the localized phase.
We construct quantum coherence resource theories in symmetrized Fock space (QCRTF), thereby providing an information-theoretic framework that connects analyses of quantum coherence in discrete-variable (DV) and continuous variable (CV) bosonic systems. Unlike traditional quantum coherence resource theories, QCRTF can be made independent of the single-particle basis and allow to quantify coherence within and between particle number sectors. For example, QCRTF can be formulated in such a way that neither Bose-Einstein condensates nor Heisenberg-Weyl coherent states are considered as quantum many…
We study the quantum coherence and its distribution of N-partite GHZ and W states of bosonic fields in the noninertial frames with arbitrary number of acceleration observers. We find that the coherence of both GHZ and W state reduces with accelerations and freezes in the limit of infinite accelerations. The freezing value of coherence depends on the number of accelerated observers. The coherence of N-partite GHZ state is genuinely global and no coherence exists in any subsystems. For the N-partite W state, however, the coherence is essentially bipartite types, and the total coherence is equal …
We study the non-equilibrium evolution of the phase coherence of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a one dimensional optical lattice, as the lattice is suddenly quenched from an insulating to a superfluid state. We observe slowly damped phase coherence oscillations in the regime of large filling factor (~100 bosons per site) at a frequency proportional to the generalized Josephson frequency. The truncated Wigner approximation (TWA) predicts the frequency of the observed oscillations.
We study first-order spatial coherence for interacting polar bosons trapped in triple-well potentials. It is argued that besides the well-known coherence produced by couplings related to tunneling between the sites, there exists a nonlocal coherence predominantly determined by intersite interactions, which prevails between the outer sites of the triple well when their total filling is odd. We find that the nonlocal interaction-induced coherence originates from the superposition of degenerate many-body states in symmetric triple wells, and demonstrate its robustness against perturbations due to…

The deep sub-Ohmic spin-boson model shows a longstanding non-Markovian coherence at low temperature. Motivating to quench this robust coherence, the thermal effect is unitarily incorporated into the time evolution of the model, which is calculated by the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group algorithm combined with the orthogonal polynomials theory. Via introducing a unitary heating operator to the bosonic bath, the bath is heated up so that a majority portion of the bosonic excited states is occupied. It is found in this situation the coherence of the spin is quickly qu…
We introduce, for each state of a bosonic quantum field, its quadrature coherence scale (QCS), a measure of the range of its quadrature coherences. Under coupling to a thermal bath, the purity and QCS are shown to decrease on a time scale inversely proportional to the QCS squared. The states most fragile to decoherence are therefore those with quadrature coherences far from the diagonal. We further show a large QCS is difficult to measure since it induces small scale variations in the state's Wigner function. These two observations imply a large QCS constitutes a mark of "macroscopic coherence…
Quantum coherence is a useful resource that is consumed to accomplish several tasks that classical devices are hard to fulfill. Especially, it is considered to be the origin of quantum speedup for many computational algorithms. In this work, we interpret the computational time cost of boson sampling with partially distinguishable photons from the perspective of coherence resource theory. With incoherent operations that preserve the diagonal elements of quantum states up to permutation, which we name \emph{permuted genuinely incoherent operation} (pGIO), we present some evidence that the decrea…
We study the effect of the intermode coupling in the generation of coherence when two bosonic modes are bilinearly coupled. We consider the case for which the two modes are weakly coupled and the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) applies and the case for which they are strongly coupled and the (RWA) does not apply. Then, in the regime of validity of (RWA), there is no coherence generation solely due to squeezing effects, which means there is an exchange of excitation between the modes and negligible squeezing. On the other hand, if the two modes are strongly coupled coherence is generated by t…
The remote control of coherence is a crucial step for its application in quantum computation. We investigate the maximal steered coherence (MSC) and its conversion to entanglement in multiple bosonic reservoirs. It is shown that the MSC decays with time in the Markovian regime and behaves as damped oscillations in the non-Markovian regime. The MSC can also be connected directly to the strength of non-Markovianity, through which we show that it can be noticeably enhanced by taking full advantage of the non-Markovian effects. Besides, the MSC can be converted completely to entanglement via optim…
Interaction between a quantum system and its environment can induce stationary coherences -- off-diagonal elements in the reduced system density matrix -- even at equilibrium. This work investigates the ``quantumness'' of such phenomena by examining the ability of classical and semiclassical models to describe equilibrium stationary coherence in the multi-level spin boson (MLSB) model, a common model for light-harvesting systems. A well justified classical harmonic oscillator model is found to fail to capture equilibrium coherence. This failure is attributed to the effective weakness of classi…
We present a review of our recent results for the comparative evaluation of the induced exchange interaction and quantum noise mediated by the bosonic environment in two-qubit systems. We report new calculations for P-donor-electron spins in Si-Ge type materials. Challenges and open problems are discussed.
We study the quantum dynamics of cold Bose atoms in a double well. It is shown that self-trapping, as well as population oscillations are common phenomena associated to nonlinear interactions. For larger $U/t$, multi-particle tunneling is damped and the quantum dynamics is dominated by the single-particle tunneling. The many-body system can be effectively described in a truncated Fock space. It exhibits coherence-decoherence oscillations in the temporal evolution. We predict a novel phenomenon of dynamical revival and collapse of matter wave fields in optical lattices in regimes near the super…
We investigate the dynamical properties of the two-bosons quantum walk in system with different degrees of coherence, where the effect of the coherence on the two-bosons quantum walk can be naturally introduced. A general analytical expression of the two-bosons correlation function for both pure states and mixed states is given. We propose a possible two-photon quantum-walk scheme with a mixed initial state and find that the two-photon correlation function and the average distance between two photons can be influenced by either the initial photon distribution, or the relative phase, or the deg…
We present a theory of measurement-induced interference for weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) gases. The many-body state resulting from the evolution of an initial fragmented (Fock) state can be approximated as a continuous superposition of Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) states; the measurement breaks the initial phase symmetry, producing a distribution pattern corresponding to only one of the GP solutions. We discuss also analytically solvable models, such as two-mode on-chip adiabatic recombination and soliton generation in quasi one-dimensional condensates.
We study the limitations on coherence evolutions under the constraints of thermodynamic laws, and focus on the optimal thermal operations (TO) reaching the bounds. For qubit case, we find a thermal operation involving only a single-mode reservoir (STO) which maintains the maximum coherence allowed by general TO. For higher dimensions, we derive general bounds on coherence merging under TO, and find STO to reach the bounds. By applying the bound to a two-qubit system, we prove that erasing correlations while preserving the marginal states is not free in the resource theory of thermodynamics. Du…
Usually, when investigating exceptional points (EPs) of an open Markovian bosonic system, one deals with spectral degeneracies of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian (NHH), which can correctly describe the system dynamics only in the semiclassical regime. A recently proposed quantum Liouvillian framework enables to completely determine the dynamical properties of such systems and their EPs (referred to as Liouvillian EPs, or LEPs) in the quantum regime by taking into account the effects of quantum jumps, which are ignored in the NHH formalism. Moreover, the symmetry and eigenfrequency spectrum of the …
A general formalism to describe the dynamics of quantum emitters in structured reservoirs is introduced. As an application, we investigate the optical coherence of an atom-like emitter diagonally coupled via a link-boson to a structured bosonic reservoir and obtain unconventional dephasing dynamics due to non-Markovian quantum feedback for different temperatures. For a two-level emitter embedded in a phonon cavity preservation of finite coherence is predicted up to room temperature.
We propose an exactly solvable model to reveal the physics of the interplay between interaction and disorder in bosonic systems. Considering interacting bosons in a double-well potential, in which disorder is mimicked by taking the energy level mismatch between the two wells to be randomly distributed, we find "two negatives make a positive" effect. While disorder or interaction by itself suppresses the phase coherence between the two wells, both together enhance the phase coherence. This model also captures several striking features of the disordered Bose-Hubbard model found in recent numeric…
Correlations of detection events in two detectors are studied in case of linear excitation of the measuring apparatus. On the basis of classical probability theory and fundamental conservation laws, a general formula is derived for the two-point correlation functions for both bosons and fermions. The results obtained coincide with that derivable from quantum theory which uses quantized field amplitudes. By applying both the particle and the wave picture at the same time, the phenomena of photon bunching and antibunching, photon anticorrelation and fermion antibunching, measured in beam experim…
We demonstrate a post-quench dynamics simulation of a Heisenberg model on present-day IBM quantum hardware that extends beyond the coherence time of the device. This is achieved using a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm that propagates a state using Trotter evolution and then performs a classical optimization that effectively compresses the time-evolved state into a variational form. When iterated, this procedure enables simulations to arbitrary times with an error controlled by the compression fidelity and a fixed Trotter step size. We show how to measure the required cost function, the over…
We study the dynamics of ultracold atoms trapped in optical double-well potentials in presence of noise generated by an external environment. When prepared in a Fock number state, the system shows phase coherence in the averaged density profile obtained using standard absorption image techniques, that disappears in absence of noise. This effect indicates that also in many-body systems an external environment may enhance quantum coherence, instead of destroying it.
We analyze the effects of the temperature on a bosonic Josephson junction realized with ultracold and dilute atoms in a double-well potential. Starting from the eigenstates of the two-site Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, we calculate the coherence visibility and the fluctuation of the on-site occupation number and study them as functions of the temperature. We show that, contrary to naive expectations, when the boson-boson interaction is suitably chosen thermal effects can increase the coherence visibility and reduce the on-site number fluctuation.
The spectral flow of three-body (trimer) states consisting of two heavy (impurity) particles sitting in a condensate of light bosons is considered. Assuming that the condensate is weakly interaction and that an impurity and a boson have a zero-range two-body interaction, we use the Born-Oppenheimer approximation to determine the effective three-body potential. We solve the resulting Schrödinger equation numerically and determine the trimer binding energies as a function of the coherence length of the light bosonic condensate particles. The binding energy is found to be suppressed by the presen…
We consider a bosonic Josephson junction made of $N$ ultracold and dilute atoms confined by a quasi one-dimensional double-well potential within the two-site Bose-Hubbard model framework. The behaviour of the system is investigated at zero temperature by varying the inter-atomic interaction from the strongly attractive regime to the repulsive one. We show that the ground-state exhibits a crossover from a macroscopic Schrödinger-cat state to a separable Fock state through an atomic coherent regime. By diagonalizing the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian we characterize the emergence of the mascroscopic c…
Many-body densities and correlation functions are of paramount importance for understanding quantum many-body physics. Here, we present a method to compute them; our approach is general and based on the action of bosonic or fermionic annihilation field operators on the many-body wavefunction. We analyze $N = 6$ quasi-one-dimensional harmonically-trapped bosons with weak to strong contact interaction strength up to the Tonks-Girardeau limit with infinite repulsion using the MultiConfigurational Time-Dependent Hartree method for indistinguishable particles (MCTDH-X). We compare our MCTDH-X solut…
We discuss the effects of many-body coherence on the speed of evolution of ultracold atomic gases and the relation to quantum speed limits. Our approach is focused on two related systems, spinless fermions and the bosonic Tonks-Girardeau gas, which possess equivalent density dynamics but very different coherence properties. To illustrate the effect of the coherence on the dynamics we consider squeezing an anharmonic potential which confines the particles and find that the speed of the evolution exhibits subtle, but fundamental differences between the two systems. Furthermore, we explore the di…

The quantum nature of the state of a bosonic quantum field manifests itself in its entanglement, coherence, or optical nonclassicality which are each known to be resources for quantum computing or metrology. We provide quantitative and computable bounds relating entanglement measures with optical nonclassicality measures. These bounds imply that strongly entangled states must necessarily be strongly optically nonclassical. As an application, we infer strong bounds on the entanglement that can be produced with an optically nonclassical state impinging on a beam splitter. For Gaussian states, we…
Essential for building quantum networks over remote independent nodes, the indistinguishability of photons has been extensively studied by observing the coincidence dip in the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer. However, indistinguishability is not limited to the same type of bosons. For the first time, we hereby observe quantum interference between flying photons and a single quantum of stored atomic coherence (magnon) in an atom-light beam splitter interface. We demonstrate that the Hermiticity of this interface determines the type of quantum interference between photons and magnons. Consequently…
Within the lowest-order Born approximation, we present an exact calculation of the time dynamics of the spin-boson model in the Ohmic regime. We observe non-Markovian effects at zero temperature that scale with the system-bath coupling strength and cause qualitative changes in the evolution of coherence at intermediate times of order of the oscillation period. These changes could significantly affect the performance of these systems as qubits. In the biased case, we find a prompt loss of coherence at these intermediate times, whose decay rate is set by $\sqrtα$, where $α$ is the coupling stren…
The entanglement of hard-core bosons in square and honeycomb lattices with nearest-neighbor interactions is estimated by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations and spin-wave analysis. The particular U(1)-invariant form of the concurrence is used to establish a connection with observables such as density and superfluid density. For specific regimes the concurrence is expressed as a combination of boson density and superfluid density.
Quantum Gaussian channels play a key role in quantum information theory. In particular, the attenuation and amplification channels are useful to describe noise and decoherence effects on continuous variables systems. They are directly associated to the beam splitter and two-mode squeezing operations, which have operational relevance in quantum protocols with bosonic models. An important property of these channels is that they are Gaussian completely positive maps and the action on a general input state depends on the parameters characterizing the channels. In this work, we study the coherence …
We use an operational approach to discuss ways to measure the higher-order cross-correlations between optical and matter-wave fields. We pay particular attention to the fact that atomic fields actually consist of composite particles that can easily be separated into their basic constituents by a detection process such as photoionization. In the case of bosonic fields, that we specifically consider here, this leads to the appearance in the detection signal of exchange contributions due to both the composite bosonic field and its individual fermionic constituents. We also show how time-gated cou…
We study the quantification of coherence in infinite dimensional systems, especially the infinite dimensional bosonic systems in Fock space. We show that given the energy constraints, the relative entropy of coherence serves as a well-defined quantification of coherence in infinite dimensional systems. Via using the relative entropy of coherence, we also generalize the problem to multi-mode Fock space and special examples are considered. It is shown that with a finite average particle number, increasing the number of modes of light can enhance the relative entropy of coherence. With the mean e…
Computing the ground-state energy of interacting electron (fermion) problems has recently been shown to be hard for QMA, a quantum analogue of the complexity class NP. Fermionic problems are usually hard, a phenomenon widely attributed to the so-called sign problem occurring in Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The corresponding bosonic problems are, according to conventional wisdom, tractable. Here, we discuss the complexity of interacting boson problems and show that they are also QMA-hard. In addition, we show that the bosonic version of the so-called N-representability problem is QMA-comple…
The second order quantum decoherence (SOQDC)is proposed as a novel description for the loss of quantum coherence only reflected by second order quantum correlations. By calculating the two-time correlation function, the phenomenon of SOQDC is studied in details for a simple model, a two boson system interacting with a reservoir composed of one or many bosons. The second order quantum decoherence effects can be observed in the sketched cavity QED experiment.
Quantum two-level systems interacting with the surroundings are ubiquitous in nature. The interaction suppresses quantum coherence and forces the system towards a steady state. Such dissipative processes are captured by the paradigmatic spin-boson model, describing a two-state particle, the "spin", interacting with an environment formed by harmonic oscillators. A fundamental question to date is to what extent intense coherent driving impacts a strongly dissipative system. Here we investigate experimentally and theoretically a superconducting qubit strongly coupled to an electromagnetic environ…
The loss of coherence of a quantum system coupled to a heat bath as expressed by the reduced density matrix is shown to lead to the miss-characterization of some systems as being incoherent when they are not. The spin boson problem and the harmonic oscillator with massive scalar field heat baths are given as examples of reduced incoherent density matrices which nevertheless still represent perfectly coherent systems.
Quantum coherence conservation is shown to be achieved by a very high rate of dissipation of an environmental system coupled with a principal system. This effect is not in the list of previously-known strategies of noise suppression, such as Zeno effect, dynamical decoupling, quantum error correction code, and decoherence free subspace. An analytical solution is found for a simplified model of a single qubit coupled with an environmental single qubit dissipating rapidly. We also show examples of coherence conservation in a spin-boson linear coupling model with a numerical evaluation.
The coherence between quantum states with different particle numbers --- the Fock-space coherence --- qualitatively differs from the more common Hilbert-space coherence between states with equal particle numbers. For a quantum dot with multiple channels available for transport, we find the conditions for decoupling the dynamics of the Fock-space coherence from both the Hilbert-space coherence as well as the population dynamics. We further find specific energy and coupling regimes where a long-lived resonance in the Fock-space coherence of the system is realized, even where no resonances are fo…
